There Has Been Little Improvement in Maternal Mortality in Developing Countries.
A maternal death related to pregnancy or childbirth is a rare event in more developed countries: Just 9 women died or every 100,000 births in thesecountries in 2005, according to new estimates rom the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the UN Population Fund, and the World Bank. But theratio o maternal deaths tobirths is shockingly high insub-Saharan Arica and SouthAsia. Even more worrisome, there has been little improve-ment over the past 15 years indeveloping regions as a whole, despite concerted eorts toimprove mothers’ health. Pub-lic health experts emphasizethe importance o prenatal careand skilled medical assistanceduring childbirth, includingthe availability o emergencycare to deal with complica-tions. Such health care is otenlacking in countries with poorinrastructure and inadequatehealth acilities.
