MORE THAN TWO-THIRDS of Americans are now overweight and

more than a third are obese. So when I spoke to 2013 MaxForm Life Challenge Finalist David Calhoun and he told me that the MaxForm Life Challenge didnt change his life, it saved his life, these words struck a chord. David was nearly 330 pounds and severely obese when he entered a Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store for the very frst time. He said the day he walked into that store and met Max Muscle franchisee, Artie Quaranta, was the day that he will remember literally saved his life. Since that time, David has lost more than 100 pounds, dropped close to 30 percent of his body fat and added several pounds of lean muscle. Many of Davids health issues that he has struggled with since he was a child have either been signifcantly reduced or alleviated entirely. He attributes his new lifestyle and what he has learned from Artie and Max Muscle Sports Nutrition in making him a completely new person. Like so many of the MaxForm Life Challenges over the years, it was very diffcult to ultimately choose one winner. This years fnalists did so amazing and they each had really unique stories and backgrounds. The two steps they failed to mention, which are arguably the most important, is how critical it is to have a support group and to work with someone who is educated. Sam Alvarez of Max Muscle Edinburg, TX and his wife Anissa, along with myself and one of the many GREAT employees, Julio Davila, were at Edinburg's 1st Annual Law 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 6. Max Muscle pumped up runners/walkers with many favors of Emerge and Vit-Acell and made sure they got Pro BCAA afterwards, too. Although I didn't participate in the run/ walk myself (my hubby and daughter did though), I was more than thrilled to help give out the goody bags provided by Max Muscle and tell my personal experience in my weight loss journey, especially right now that I am participating in this year's MaxForm Life Challenge. In the fall of 2009, I was in my 40s with a disciplined exercise routine but unhappy with how I looked and felt. On the positive side, I would be in the gym a minimum of 5 days/ week with an aggressive cardio and strength training routine. Exercise had always been an integral part of my life. I think subconsciously that helped me justify that I didnt have to be very mindful of my nutritional habits. But I was working hard in the gym and getting nowhere. In fact, my size and weight had been slowly and gradually increasing over the years. A friend at the gym with similar workout and eating habits started on the Max Muscle nutrition program. Within 3 weeks, she looked noticeably slimmer, had more energy and was very enthusiastic about the plan and the products. I made a decision right then to get on the same program, and the two of us committed to help keep each other on track. It was Scott and Karen Herkes from Quad Cities Max Muscle who put together a custom nutrition plan specifcally designed for me. Tey took into consideration my exercise regime, my weight goals and provided Max Muscle product recommendations to incorporate into my daily meals and snacks. In the beginning, it wasnt easy. Temptation was everywhere: family meals, weekend dinner parties, lunches with my girl friends, eating out, ordering in, etc. I knew just because I was making a conscious lifestyle change that my family and friends werent so I needed to be sensitive to them and adjust. And I did!

Ive lost 55 pounds and have kept it of! In 2011, I earned my Spin Cycle Instructor Certifcation and have moved from being a participant to a teacher. How I Went From 1 Mile to 70.3 Miles in Less Than a Year


In April 2012 I decided I needed to start getting in shape, so I joined a gym. Yeah, that old story. I went a couple times and I even broke a sweat once. By late May I had come up with enough excuses to avoid the gym for a couple weeks straight. In the beginning of June I decided that I didnt want to be one of those people who pays for a gym membership and never goes. So, I got serious. I had two goals: lose weight and gain strength. Tats when I started shopping for what I would need. Tats how I found Max Muscle. After much reading and researching, I settled on Iso-X as my protein of choice. I set goals and a training program and I also did a 1 mile run to fnd my baseline. It took me 12 minutes to run one mile. Ouch. When I was younger I would run 5Ks on the weekend, but at 40 years old and 200 pounds, things were diferent. I tried to run farther than a mile but convinced myself that it would be more fun to just not run anymore. Tat made me mad. I knew that I had I gotten out of shape, but I didnt know that things had gotten that bad. Fast forward a bit. On Sept. 8, 2012, I completed my frst sprint triathlon. I was so

stoked. I had completed a lifelong dream. But it was so fun that I got hooked. In January, I found my big goal: the HalfIronman Triathlon at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in May 2013. It was fve months away. Could I get ready in time? It would be a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run, for a grand total of 70.3 miles. I dug deep and pushed. I got a swim coach. I incorporated EnduroMax into my supplement regimen. I started reading every piece of information I could on training, safety, not overtraining, nutrition and recovery techniques, and I put them all to good use. Max Sports & Fitness was a good source of information and it also contained motivational

stories of other athletes who'd trained hard for their goals and made it. It kept me inspired. Te morning of the race I woke up before the alarm went of. I did my morning routine, got to the race, set up my transition and got lined up in my starting wave. National Anthem. Invocation by the Iron Nun (Shes awesome. Google her). We get in the water. Whistle blows. I start swimming: the frst step of a race that covers 70.3 miles of swimming, biking and running. Eight hours and eight seconds later, I crossed the fnish line. I know, I know. Tats goofy slow. I did have some unexpected challenges during the race. I wont go into details, but I dont even care about the time. Te fact remains, I completed a Half-Ironman triathlon. Its kind of surreal to think about where Ive come from. Eleven months ago I weighed 200 pounds exactly. Te morning of the race, I weighed 169. Eleven months ago I could only run 1 mile and now I can traverse 70.3. And one week before the race, I did a 1-mile sprint to see how fast I could do it. My time was 7:16. So I dropped almost 5 minutes of my 1-mile time. Tis isnt the fnish, just a good start. I will continue to get faster and stronger. Max Muscle has defnitely helped. Between the EnduroMax (which I used before the race and in the transition between bike and run) and the magazine with great articles, and along with Iso-X for strength training, Im excited to see where Ill be in another year from now.

m sure many of you have heard about how great juicing can be. There are many health benefts of drinking freshly juiced fruits and vegetables, and its a great way to add nutrients from the fruits or vegetables that you normally may not eat. The juice portion of fruits and vegetable retain most of the benefcial vitamins, nutrients and phytonutrients. Other powerful nutrients are favonoids and anthocyanins, which are rich in content within a variety of fruits and vegetables. Phytonutrients, favonoids and anthocyanins have been shown to have multiple health benefts in fghting against cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, cellular damage and overall infammatory diseases. I like to tell people that starting a juicing program is great, but beware: juicing is the process of eliminating the fber from fruits and vegetables in order to concentrate and consume a higher volume of the nutrients from the fruits and vegetables. Its not uncommon to juice three apples, four carrots, a beet, one orange and a couple leaves of kale. When was the last time you ate that many fruits and vegetables? The fber and literal chore of chewing all that food can really slow you down. But we need fber and we also need nutrients, so its a bit of a balance. Dont just juice! Get fber in your body to keep your eliminating organs healthy. But, by all means

Tips for a great juicing experience: Make sure you clean your fruits and veggies very well before juicing, as they may contain pesticides and food bacteria. Be creative and try colorful fruits and vegetables. Bell peppers, red peppers, beets, swiss chard and many other colorful fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients. Dont eliminate fber from your diet for an extended period of time. Juice only what you are going to immediately drink as it begins losing potency very quickly. Confused about what age to start mammogram screening and how often to schedule those exams? Thats understandable, since the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Cancer Society advise yearly mammogram screening beginning at age 40, while the U.S. Preventative Services Task force recommends every other year screening beginning at age 50. A new study out of the University of California at San Francisco adds support to the U.S. Preventative Services recommendations, fnding that for most women between the ages of 40 and 74, getting a mammogram every other year instead of annually is just as effective as yearly screening, and cuts the risk of false-positive fndings almost in half. This wasnt true for all women, though. The study authors found that in women between the ages of 40 and 49 with extremely dense breasts, waiting that extra year may be risky, since they had a greater chance of developing a more advanced tumor after a two-year wait than if they got annual screening. This wasnt the case among women aged 50-74 with extremely dense breasts. While the researchers dont expect an immediate change in screening recommendations from professional organizations like the American Cancer Society, they do believe that studies such as this one will help doctors move toward a more personalized approach to mammogram screening, using factors such as breast density and family history of breast cancer as well as age to determine when mammograms should begin and how often they should be repeated.

Mammogram Frequency: The Debate Goes On

Of course youve repeatedly admonished your newly licensed teen driver against drinking and driving and driving while texting. But a new study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev that was published in Accident Analysis and Prevention fnds that there is one more thing you can do: make sure he listens to the right music.
The study evaluated 85 young novice drivers, each of whom took six challenging 40-minute trips. Two were done while listening to music from their own playlists, two with background music designed to increase driver safety (easy listening, soft rock, light jazz), and two without any music at all. What the researchers found? Those who tuned in to the easy listening, soft rock and light jazz made fewer driving errors such as speeding, tailgating and careless lane switching than both those who listened to their preferred music and those who didnt listen to any music. Male drivers were especially prone to making more frequent and serious mistakes, especially when listening to their preferred music, which was often energetic, fast-paced tunes such as hip-hop or rap, played loudly.

TEENS DRIVING BADLY

Weve all heard statistics warning that stressful life events such as divorce signifcantly increase the risk of depression. But recent research from the University of Arizona found that divorce has a signifcant effect on subsequent depression only if youve had a previous history of depression.
The study looked at people who had a history of depression but werent divorced, those who had a history of depression and had divorced, and those who had no history of depression and had divorced. What they found? Nearly 60 percent of adults with a history of depression who got divorced experienced a later depressive episode. Both those who had a history of depression and remained married and those who had divorced and had no history of depression had only a 10 percent likelihood of a subsequent depressive episode. The upshot? The authors suggest that those who have a history of depression may be less able to handle stressors outside of the security of a relationship. But they caution that the specifc mechanisms of these fndings must be explored further.

But while we may appreciate our sensory organs, we may not realize just how much they really do for us. They can tell us many things about our general health if only were willing to listen.

What Your EYEs, NosE aNd Mouth Have To Say abouT your HealTH

YOUR EYES

The eye has been called the most complex organ in your body, with a multitude of parts that work much like a digital camera. The cornea (the front surface of the eye) focuses on incoming light, just as a camera lens, and the iris adjusts the size of the pupil to control the amount of light, just as the diaphragm of a camera does. And eyes have lenses, too, to help focus on near and approaching objects. The inner lining of the back of the eye, or the retina, converts the optical images it receives to the brain, just like an image sensor in a camera. But eyes can do so much more than provide visual images, according to Dr. Mark Fleckner, an ophthalmologist practicing in New York. During an eye exam, doctors fnd clues to whats going on in our eyes and in the rest of the body, he explained. Its not uncommon, said Dr. Fleckner, for people to learn that they have another health problem, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or a thyroid condition, during an eye exam. The eye is the only place in the body where doctors can noninvasively see blood vessels, he added. And since many illnesses like diabetes and hypertension affect the blood vessels, physicians can pick up a disease before patients are aware of it. Other systemic diseases that can be related to eye symptoms, said Dr. Fleckner, are hepatitis, a liver disease that can result in a yellowing of the white part of the eye, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis that can cause dry eyes and brain tumors or neurological problems that are manifested by double vision.

Be alert for eye symptoms that may indicate other problems with your health, said Dr. Fleckner. But because some diseases including eye diseases such as glaucoma have no obvious symptoms, its crucial to have regular eye checkups, even if youre not experiencing any problems. Its important for everyone to have a baseline eye exam starting at age 40, he added.

The nose is much more than a facial decoration. A lining of sticky mucus within the nasal cavity traps dust particles, pollutants and bacteria before they can get into the lungs. Tiny hairs called cilia sweep the excess mucus to the back of the throat, where it is swallowed away. And a vast network of blood vessels within the nose warms the atmospheric air to body temperature as well as humidifes the air to keep your airways from drying out. In addition to fltering, warming and moisturizing the air, your nose allows you to smell the roses. But symptoms involving this sensory organ can also be an indication of underlying disease, said Marc I. Leavey, an internist practicing in Maryland. Three of the symptoms that may be a clue to systemic illness, he elaborated, are severe or frequent nosebleeds, a runny nose and changes in your sense of smell. Everyone has had a nosebleed from time to time, explained Dr. Leavey. And the vast majority of nosebleeds are related to innocent causes, such as minor irritations or trauma to the nose, or drying out of the nasal mucosa. But sometimes a severe nosebleed or chronic nosebleeds may indicate a more serious problem, such as a bleeding issue, nasal or sinus cancer, leukemia or kidney failure. And while very rare, seriously elevated blood pressure can result in nosebleeds. The mucus in the nose, that is, the stuff that runs out, can increase with a cold, for sure. But there are many conditions, some common and some not so, that can result in a similar drip, said Dr. Leavey. One of them is acid refux, or GERD. While unusual, acid refux can reach the back of the throat, and while lying down, trigger increased nasal drainage as well, explained Dr. Leavey. Changes in sense of smell may occur in a small percentage of people without any underlying disease, especially among older persons. But olfactory changes, said Dr. Leavey, can also be an early and predictive sign of some systemic diseases. Nasal polyps can disturb the normal physiology of the nasopharynx and impact on the ability to smell, he said. Head trauma or infammation of the cranial nerves, such as with Bells Palsy, can also impact smell. And endocrine diseases, from diabetes to hypothyroidism and others, can change the sense of smell.

Dr. Leavey recommended that any nasal symptoms that are severe or persist should be checked out by your doctor. While most symptoms involving the nose are innocent and easily treated others may indicate more sinister disease.

The mouth the frst part of the digestive system serves as a receptacle for food and mechanical digestion through chewing and swallowing. It also aids in speech and in helping the respiratory system in the passage of air. But when something goes wrong with the mouth, it can indicate problems with your health. The mouth is really like a mirror which refects the health of the rest of the body, said Leena Palomo, DDS, MSD, Associate Professor of Periodontics at Case Western Reserve University. There are many conditions of the mouth that may indicate a systemic problem. Pale gums, for example, may be a symptom of anemia. A burning mouth or gums that bleed easily may indicate a nutritional defciency or a blood disease. Oral ulcerations or other lesions in the mouth may be one of the frst signs of diseases like lupus, an autoimmune disease, or Crohns, an infammatory bowel disease. Red and puffy gums point to periodontal disease, said Dr. Palomo. This is a condition where bacterial bioflm (plaque and tartar) build up in the mouth, causing infammation, and, if left untreated, loss of teeth. But chronic infammation related to gum disease is not confned to just the oral cavity, she added. Your body responds to such infammation by making infammatory proteins called cytokines, which circulate throughout the body via the blood stream. Your liver, in turn, responds to the cytokines by producing another protein called C-reactive protein (CRP). People with high levels of C-reactive protein, regardless of the cause of infammation, said Dr. Palomo, have been suggested to be at greater risk for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis, or a buildup of plaques within the walls of the arteries, can lead to infammation and thickening of the artery walls, and eventually may cause a stroke or a heart attack. In addition to cardiovascular problems, gum disease is associated with pre-term, low birth weight babies. And it can worsen control of systemic disorders such as diabetes. What is more, just as gum disease can worsen the effects of some systemic diseases, certain systemic diseases that interfere with the bodys infammatory system like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis may put you at greater risk for gum disease.

Dr. Palomos suggestion: Brush your teeth and gums twice daily, foss every day, and visit your dentist regularly for cleaning and an exam that can detect gum disease as well as other diseases of the mouth that may indicate systemic problems. I like to get outside in the fresh air and switch it up every now and then. My coach has me do this fun and heart pumping animalistic workout in the park when I feel stir crazy in the gym or when I travel! This really focuses in on strengthening my core and lower transverse ab muscles, build my glutes and get an intense fat burning cardio session complete all in one workout, with NO GYM needed! Lets get started!

4. Sprints (Not pictured) I love sprints to really burn fat and get a quick, but tough cardiovascular session out of the way. When I am prepping for my shows I incorporate sprint training 4 times a week into my work out routine. If I am at a track, I sprint as fast as I possibly can on the straight portion and walk the curve as my rest. I will do 15 sprints with 30-second rests in between each one. Do 15 sprints.

1. Jump Squats Start with your feet in a wide stance and squat down nice and low to the ground in order to really engage your glutes. Once you are at the bottom of your squat really focus and use your glutes to build momentum and spring up with a nice explosive burst of energy. At the top of the squat jump, reach as high as you can in the air with both arms up. This is a great explosive exercise that will also get your heart rate going while working your legs and glutes. Do 4 sets 12-15 reps. 2. Pushups (Not pictured) Pushups are always a good exercise for building upper body strength and are great for your core! Do 4 sets of 12-15 reps.

3. Long-Stride Lunges Stand with feet shoulderwidth apart. Take a large step forward. Then lunge down once you feel a nice stretch in your glute and leg keep your weight in your heel and the leg behind you on your toe, stay controlled and balanced. Alternate each side and keep good posture and keep your core tight. Each lunge practice mind muscle correlation and focus on building nice round glutes. Do 4 sets of 20 steps on each leg, with 45-second rest in between each set.

5. Bear Crawls Start with your hands and feet on the ground (on all fours) with your butt high in the air. Crawl forward alternating your hands and feet like a bear, while keeping your butt up. Each one is one rep. I rest for about 30 seconds in between each set. Do 4 sets 12-15 reps.

6. Alligator Crawls Start with your body in a pushup position. Then move your left hand forward and bring your right knee to your right elbow. Alternate each side as you crawl forward. 7. Leap Frogs Start on the ground with your rear close to your heels and your hands in front of your body on the ground. Leap in a forward motion for a nice long jump and land back in the same position you started. I really love these to get my heart rate up and it works my glutes and legs. Just like a frog, push off legs and land jumping like a frog, each jump is one rep. Do 12-15 reps.

8. Burpees Start with feet shoulder-width apart, place your hands on the ground in front of your feet (like the bear crawl). Walk your hands forward until you are parallel to the ground in a pushup position. Complete a full pushup. Jump your feet to meet your hands. Squat low to the ground. Spring up with your hands high in the air. Land and jump your feet back to a plank. Jump your feet back to your hands and repeat. Do 4 sets of 12-15 reps.

But dont be fooled into thinking that picking a trainer is as easy as selecting whichever toned teacher is available at the gym, for not all trainers are created equally. Take a look at these six types of trainers to steer clear of, so you can start sweating your way to your dream body STAT!
If your budgets tight, but your core is, well, not so much, you may be tempted to save a few pennies and hire a ft, enthusiastic, gym-loving friend to be your trainer. But no matter how well she seems to know her way around a set of dumbbells, that doesnt mean shes a qualifed professional. A non-certifed traineris likely to harm any client [that she] takes on, said Jaime Kenworthy, an ACE certifed personal trainer and AFAA group ftness instructor in Philadelphia. Lack of proper knowledge can lead to clients experiencing anything from minor aches and pains to broken bones. Life After WINNING


cant believe it has already been one year since I won the MaxForm Life Challenge. Time fies when you are having fun! This past year has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my life. I am so grateful for everything that has come with winning this competition, from fun photo shoots, appearing in multiple magazines, meeting amazing Max Muscle employees who are all so passionate about the products, and being able to travel across the country! What I am most thankful for, however, is how I learned to get in shape, then stay in shape something I have never been able to accomplish before. Learning how to successfully maintain a slim and ft physique was not exactly easy at frst. I read somewhere that if a person has lost a signifcant amount of weight, they are much more likely to gain back weight when eating and exercising the same as someone who has never fuctuated in weight. In my own experience I found this to be true also, and frustrating. Here I was, in the best shape of my life when I won, thinking how much easier life will be to just maintain weight rather than always losing. WRONG! I found out very quickly that I had to keep doing exactly what I was doing to win the MaxForm challenge in order to maintain my appearance, at least for a few months. After about four months of continuing this strict regimen I was fnally able to incorporate cheat meals once per week and was able to start limiting

my cardio. The only changes I made were I stopped carb cycling and doing cardio twice per day. In a way I felt like my body was in shock when I won and needed to fnd consistency before I could ease up. Ever since I have been happy with my new ft lifestyle and fnd it to be second nature now. I eat clean most of the time but enjoy a few indulgences once in a while. I continue to work out 5-6 days per week and very much enjoy it. I found it is important to continue setting goals too. I found myself setting more ftness goals than anything, such as increasing my level on the elliptical machine or lifting heavier weight, or trying to beat my previous time on my daily 3-mile morning walk. My current long-term goal is to be in my best possible shape to start a healthy family soon, hopefully within the next few years! As most of you know, I followed ftness model Jamie Easons Live Fit Trainer to lose my weight last year. Jamie just had her frst child, so I am hoping to follow her direction to bounce back when my time comes too! I would like to end my last column wishing the new MaxForm champion the best of luck! Chicken Quinoa Ragout (Serves 4)


Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil 4 whole chicken legs, skin removed Sea salt (as instructed) Black pepper (as instructed) 6 slices turkey bacon 4 green onion, roughly chopped 1 yellow onion, roughly chopped 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 cups water plus 2 cups water or chicken broth cup dry white wine such as sauvignon blanc 2 large garlic cloves, crushed 4 sprigs fresh thyme 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano leaves 1 teaspoon whole peppercorns 2 bay leaves 1 pound butternut or acorn squash, skin removed, cut into 1-inch chunks Dash or two of hot sauce 1 cup pre-washed quinoa 2 tablespoons chopped Italian fat leaf parsley leaves

Directions

1. Heat oil in a large heavy skillet over medium high heat. Add chicken and lightly season with salt and pepper. Brown chicken on one side, turn and brown on the other side. Transfer to a plate. 2. Add turkey bacon to the skillet and cook until browned and crisp, about 2 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and add the green onion and onion and saute until just browned and tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the cornstarch and stir an additional minute. 3. Add 1 cups water and the wine to the skillet. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring with a wooden spoon. Stir in garlic, thyme, oregano, peppercorns, bay leaves and a pinch of salt. Add the squash and chicken, return to a boil, cover with lid and reduce heat to low. Cook until the squash is tender and the chicken is nearly falling off the bones about 30 minutes. 4. While chicken ragout is cooking, make the quinoa by bringing quinoa and remaining 2 cups of water to boil in a medium stock pot over medium high heat. Cover and reduce heat to simmer and allow to cook for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, until ready to use. 5. To serve, remove bay leaves and thyme sprigs from ragout. Stir the hot sauce into the ragout, place 1 cup of cooked quinoa on serving plate. Top quinoa with approximately 1 cup ragout and 1 chicken leg. Finish with a sprinkle of the chopped parsley.

Youve likely seen organic products offered at many of the places you shop. Youve also probably noticed they come with a higher price tag. What exactly does it mean to be USDA certifed organic and is it really better for you?
The most basic way to defne organic is animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones. Produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modifed organisms or ionizing radiation. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in order to qualify as organic farmers, producers must use renewable resources and aim to conserve soil and water to enhance the environmental quality for future generations. Scottsdale, Arizona-based doctor Gracie Lyons, who is also a certifed raw nutritionist and yoga instructor, started eating organic when her son was just four months old. Lyons son had developed a severe case of eczema. After doing her own research and seeking medical advice she changed his diet in an effort to help him and also

changed her diet as a result. Having had a strong interest in organic natural foods through college and medical school, Lyonss interest continued to grow due to her sons medical issues. Eating organic, particularly raw organic food, made her feel energetic and healthy. Lyons admits that there is a big debate currently on whether organic food is actually more nutrient-rich and healthy than non-organic. She emphasizes thats likely not what we should be focusing on. Its the pesticide load that the body has to handle from heavily sprayed conventional food that adds toxicity to our bodies, not to mention the toxic effect it is having on our land, air and water. Erin MacDonald, RDN, a nutrition, ftness and wellness coach/co-founder of U Rock Girl (www.URockGirl.com) encourages people to beware of the following myths surrounding organic food.

Regardless of that choice, it is still more benefcial to include vegetables and fruits in your diet, even if it means consuming non-organic items.

Switching to organic eating can be costly, which is what makes the Environmental Working Groups dirty dozen list very useful. The Environmental Working Group regularly analyzes Department of Agriculture data to determine which foods have the highest levels of pesticides. When shopping organic, keep this information in mind:

Products with less than 70 percent organic ingredients may list organically produced ingredients on the side panel of the package, but may not make any organic claims on the front of the package. Not all organic products are created equal. Different types of foods require different labels. Educate yourself on what they mean in order to make the best choice for you. Some ingredients are exempt from the organic defnition because they are too diffcult to source organically. These include foods using sausage casings, celery powder, fsh oils and some coloring. Only foods certifed as at least 95 percent organic are allowed to carry the USDA certifed organic label.

A study by the University of Wisconsin, conducted over the holiday season, a time when most of us gain weight, showed that CLA works to prevent weight gain and even promote fat loss. The subjects were given 3.2 grams of CLA per day and lost an average of 2.2 pounds of fat, while the placebo group gained an average of 1.5 pounds. In most of the studies, a daily dose of 3.2 grams to 6 grams of CLA taken at different times during the day is used. It may be hard to believe, but CLA supplementation does even more than help us add muscle and burn fat. Several other studies have shown impressive health benefts including reduced risk of cancer (shown to lower breast, colon and prostate cancer), improved immune function, positive results for Type II diabetes, appetite control, improved cholesterol profle and lower cortisol levels. The main objective of this article was to review the studies undertaken on the plant in light of further research for anti-obesity compounds from species of Caralluma. Caralluma fmbriata extract has received Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status for use as a nutraceutical to combat obesity as one of the most serious public health concerns in adults. An extract of C. fmbriata (Slimaluna) is used as an anti-obesity agent and appetite suppressor. On reviewing the studies undertaken on the chemistry, pharmacology and therapeutic potential of Caralluma, it is concluded that the genus contains bioactive pregnane glycosides as one of the major constituents shown to have anti-obesity and appetite suppressor effects. Researchers conducted a study to determine
the difference between pre versus post exercise supplementation of creatine on measures of body composition and strength. Nineteen healthy male bodybuilders participated in this study and subjects were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: Pre-Supp group consumed 5 g of creatine immediately before exercise, Post-Supp group consumed 5 g immediately after exercise. Subjects performed a periodized, split-routine, bodybuilding workout fve days per week for four weeks. Researchers found and concluded that creatine supplementation plus resistance exercise increases fat-free mass and strength and it appears that consuming creatine immediately post-workout is superior to pre-workout on body composition and strength. Ashwagandha Safe and Effective in Stress Reduction

The serum cortisol levels were substantially reduced in the Ashwagandha group compared to the placebo group. The fndings of this study suggest that a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individuals resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.
