Metropolis (1927) created by Fritz Lang, was a silent scientific film produced by UFA.

According to Thomas Elsaesser written on his book, 1920s was called golden twenties of filmmaking and it was a masterpiece influencing audiences. This is a story happened in a metropolis in the future. The main character Freder who was the son of this citys master, was called by a young woman (Maria) to be the mediator on this city, helping his brothers and sisters to change the society. And he sneaked into the power machine, exchanged with the worker and through the time he worked he heard the story of babel of humans sin in death. This brought the start of the story progressing.

During the time of 1920s, expressionism was domestic movement around Europe .it was shown that there were many art principles in the filming, such as repetitions, different points of perspective, composition arrangement and lighting. Many points perspective was an interesting element in contemporary arts and design as it created a new layer of the images and it provided depth of the pictures. But composition should be well designed to give vision to the audiences. Fig5.

The flaming design of this film was noticeable that with strong comparative with lightings and compositions. This is also supported the perspective to be more structural. On the other hands as the images below were inspired as they were creative in that time and it was shown that the influences of those scenes. (Michael & Holger 2000:4-7)

Those were given ideas of connections with audiences as a filmmaking, actor wont look at the camera while they were acting but this was a new way to let audiences experiences and more engaged to the film as reduce the distance from third person to the first.
Feeding on its own contradictions, this film classic has, from its own time to the present, trailed as many clouds of glory as frowns of disapproval. Langs fatal UFA suicide mission in the studios fierce battle with Hollywood became a monster-film the critics loved to hate. (Thomas, 2000:7)

Moreover, after First World War when comparing the production and filming ways with Hollywood films, Germany films in 1920s were more creative and artistic while Hollywood films were more close to reality. Further study with the scenes, it can see that Hollywood films were filming in a real place while this film was based on models. Lang was building handcrafted model of the city, spending months and months of preparation of the models in studio and this was noticeable this was a hard task for the producer. As it was written
The real difficulties came with the architectural scale models, many of which were designed by Kettelhut, who has left a detailed account of the shoot in his memoirs. Vistas and perspectives, surging crowds, collapsing buildings and wrecked machinery had to be stitched and segued into real live action, set in a throbbing city and planned in dimensions that only existed in the mind. (Thomas, 2000:25)

This film was interesting because the film was making in models, over cross with reality and imaginations. And I also like the way of acting with matching with the soundtrack as a rhythm of the film.
