#16/19 WASHINGTON vs. #2/2 OREGON Dawgs Take On Ducks In Annual Border War
THE GAME: Washington returns home to Husky Stadium for a highly-anticipated matchup with old rival Oregon in a 1:00 p.m. game Saturday. The game will air live to a national audience on FOX Sports 1 television. Washington suffered a tough, three-point loss last Saturday at No. 5 Stanford and dropped one spot in each poll. The Huskies are now No. 16 in the AP Top 25 and No. 19 in the coaches poll while Oregon retained its No. 2 spot in both after a win at Colorado. The UW also welcomes ESPNs College Gameday for the first time in the history of the popular pregame show. QUICK SNAPS: The UW has gone three-and-out on offense in only six of 65 drives this season (9.2 percent) ... only Baylor (1-out-of-61; 1.6 percent) boasts a better percentage ... UW has allowed 84 pass receptions, only five of which have gone for more than 25 yards .. Washington is highly ranked in the NCAA in a number of offensive and defensive categories, including: 3rd in 3rd-down conversions, 7th in completion pct. and 5th in total offense, as well as 3rd in pass efficiency defense and 11th in scoring defense ... the Huskies have turned the ball over six times this year, but have not allowed any of those turnovers to be converted into points ... conversely, the UW has converted six of eight takeaways into touchdowns ... Washington has allowed just seven points in the first and fourth quarters this season ... Bishop Sankey enters the week as the nations No. 4 rusher with 146.4 yards per game ... hes rushed for 100 or more in eight of the last 10 ... Sankeys 2,358 career rush yards are good for 11th in UW history, and within 200 yards of 6th place ... Keith Price, who is currently No. 16 in the nation in pass efficiency, moved into the No. 3 spot in UW career passing yards in the win at Illinois ... he now has 7,347 career yards, 292 shy of the No. 2 spot on the list ... UW has over 80 plays in all five games so far (85, 85, 81, 86, 88) ... 10 true freshmen played this season: WR Darrell Daniels, DB Kevin King, DE Joe Mathis, WR John Ross, WR Damoreea Stringfellow, PK Cameron Van Winkle, DB Trevor Walker, DE Marcus Farria, WR Taelon Parson, DB Kaleb Taylor ... not counting specialists (kickers, punter, snappers, holders, returners) the UW has 36 players who have started at least one game in their career, including eight offensive linemen ... however, only 24 different players have started a game this season ... Sean Parker is 13th in the nation in interceptions per game. TELEVISION: The Washington-Oregon game will air live to a national audience on FOX Sports 1, with Gus Johnson (play-by-play), Charles Davis (analyst) and Kristina Pink (sidelines) providing the commentary. The Pac-12 Network will also air condensed, one-hour replays of the game during the following week while various regional Fox Sports stations will also show replays. RADIO: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KJR 950-AM, will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 18 Northwest radio stations. Longtime play-by-play man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise Woodward. The UW broadcast of the game will also air on Sirius (112) and XM (192) satellite radio.

WASHINGTON vs. STANFORD STANOFRD STADIUM OCT. 5, 2013 7:30 P.M. PT (ESPN) THE HEAD COACH: A new era of Washington football begins this fall when the newly-renovated Husky Stadium opens its doors on Aug. 31. The 93-year old legend has undergone a thorough rebuild that will make it one of the grandest, most beautiful sports venues in the nation. With the new stadium come heightened interest and energy around the Husky program as the Dawgs look to springboard into yet another era of on-field successes. Poised to take them there is fifth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, who has assembled the pieces on offense and defense, in recruiting and now in facilities and infrastructure to put the Huskies back on top. Since arriving at the UW after the 2008 season, Sarkisian has taken the Dawgs from their lowest of lows to three bowl games in his four seasons. Now his task is to continue that upward movement. In 2012, the Huskies posted a 7-6 overall record, going 5-4 in Pac-12 play, despite facing one of the nations most rigorous schedules, which included a sevengame stretch that included matchups with five teams ranked in the top 11 in the AP poll. Washington posted a pair of memorable victories over top-10 foes, beating 8thranked Stanford, the eventual Pac-12 champs, 17-13, on a Thursday night in Seattle. In the eighth week of the season, the Dawgs handed seventh-ranked Oregon State its first loss of the season, 20-17, in another down-to-the-wire win. For the season, the Huskies made considerable strives on defense, cutting nearly 100 yards and more than 11 points per game off of its per-game average from the previous year. On offense, the UW had its fourth straight season with a 1,000-yard rusher as sophomore Bishop Sankey ran for 1,439 yards. The 2011 season, Sarkisians third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-and-coming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the teams third-down percentage improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. In 2010, Sarkisians second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl seasons top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didnt think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisians Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nations most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (200203) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans staff, the team posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Page 2

WASHINGTON vs. STANFORD STANOFRD STADIUM OCT. 5, 2013 7:30 P.M. PT (ESPN) COACHING STAFF: Washingtons assistant coaching staff welcomed just two new members in 2013 as former graduate assistant Jordan Paopao was elevated to tight ends coach and legendary Husky quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo returned to Montlake to coach quarterbacks. Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau also made a move, switching from quarterbacks to receivers coach (while maintaining his coordinating duties). Nearly all of the UWs nine full-time assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-Pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by second-year assistant Kiesau, who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau had spent the previous decade at either Cal or Colorado. Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fifth season as the UWs run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW from Arizona State. Paopao, who played at San Diego, had spent the previous two years as a GA at Washington, is the son of former BC Lions assistant coach Tony Paopao. Assistant head coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fifth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The defensive staff saw no changes after the 2012 season. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California before moving to the UW this in 2012. A former Cal defensive lineman, hed coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington has four new graduate assistants: former Husky wide receiver DAndre Goodwin, Kenyon Blue, Connor Knowles and Danny Razore. VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies full-time coaching staff includes just one UW graduate (Marques Tuiasosopo), nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisians only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. Defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies running backs coach and special teams coordinator, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to 2000. More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies during his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto ever faced Washington during his career at Idaho, he grew up in the Evergreen State (Spokane), while tight ends coach Jordan Paopao spent some of his childhood living in Vancouver, B.C., when his dad coached with the BC Lions of the CFL. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State. HUSKIES vs. DUCKS HISTORY: Washington leads the all-time series against the Ducks with 58 wins, 42 losses and five ties. While the series of games played in Eugene has the Ducks enjoying a 16-12 edge all-time (Oregon's home games vs. the UW were played in Portland for many years), the Huskies are 31-20-4 against their cross-border rivals in games played in Seattle. Washington has been a frequent visitor to Eugene in recent years. The 2009 game in Seattle was just the third in the decade while they've met at Autzen in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The Ducks have had the edge of late, winning 14 of the last 18 against the Dawgs. The Huskies, however, have won 15 of the last 31 and 21 of the last 38. Last season in Eugene, second-ranked Oregon beat No. 23 Washington, 52-21. In 2011, in the final game at the old Husky Stadium, the Ducks beat the UW, 34-17. In 2010 in Eugene, UW QB Keith Price made his first college start in a 53-16 Husky loss. Oregon led 18-16 in the third quarter before pulling away. Three years at Husky Stadium, Oregon won, 43-19. Four seasons ago in Eugene in the season-opener for both teams, Jeremiah Masoli came off the bench and led the Ducks to a 44-10 win. In 2007 in Seattle, the Huskies and Ducks were tied at 31-31 after three quarters before Oregon pulled away in the final period for a 55-34 win. The Huskies' last win over Oregon was in 2003, when Shelton Sampson and Kenny James both rushed for over 100 yards in a 42-10 Husky victory. Washington and Oregon first met on the football field in 1900, a 43-0 Oregon win in Eugene. The Huskies got their first win in the series in the next meeting, a 6-5 victory in 1903. From 1974 to 1993, Washington won 17 of 20 meetings. The series also features one of the biggest year-to-year turnarounds in college football history as the Ducks beat the Huskies, 58-0, in 1973 and then lost at the UW, 66-0, the following year. WASHINGTON-OREGON TIES: Washingtons coaching staff includes two coaches who were four-year lettermen at Oregon. Both UW defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and linebackers coach Peter Sirmon lettered from 1996 to 1999. Both joined the UW staff prior to last season. Several current longtime members of the UO coaching staff were working at Oregon at the time that Wilcox and Sirmon played there. Sirmon was also a grad assistant with the Ducks in 2009. Additionally, UW offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau worked on the same Colorado staff as Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich in the late 2000s. Washingtons current roster includes just two players from the state of Oregon: junior OL James Atoe (The Dalles-Wahtonka) and freshman OL Andrew Kirkland (Portland/Jesuit). The Ducks roster lists only two Washingtonians: Andy Mattingly (Spokane/Mead) and Aaron Lee (Federal Way/Decatur). A few Huskies and Ducks went to the same high school: Husky Gregory Ducre and Duck DeAnthony Thomas (Crenshaw); Husky Kendyl Taylor and Ducks Tyler Johnstone and Reggie Daniels (Hamilton); Kirkland and Ducks Keanon Lowe, Doug Brenner & Matt Pierson (Jesuit); Husky Kevin King and Duck T.J. Daniel (Bishop ODowd); and Husky Erik Kohler and Duck Connor Johnson (Oaks Christian). DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washingtons most-played rivalries are against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 105 times, Oregon in 105 games and Oregon State on 97 occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks 58-42-5, Washington State 67-32-6 and Oregon State 59-34-4. Combined, Washington has a 184-108-15 (.624) record against its northwest rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season on 84 prior occasions. Over those 84 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only seven occasions. Page 3

TEAM NOTES
SANKEY ON TOP: Washington junior Bishop Sankey put his name on the map last season when he ran for 1,439 yards, the third-highest total in Washington history. This season, his profile continues to rise as he enters this week as the nations No. 4 leading rusher at 146.4 yards per game (despite carrying the ball just four times for 77 yards vs. Idaho State). Over his last 10 games, dating back to last season of course, hes rushed for 1,501, an average of more than 150 per game over that stretch. DEFENSE ON THE RISE: Washington's defense made tremendous improvements in 2012 as compared to the 2011 totals, and those strides have continued their ascent in 2013. Last year, the Huskies were better on defense across the board, but most notably improved against the pass, where they went from the 116th (out of 120 teams) ranked unit in the nation to the 23rd . Here's a look at where the UW's per-game average and NCAA rank in all of the major team defense categories in 2011, 2012 and through the first six weeks of 2013: 2011 (NCAA Rank) 2012 (NCAA Rank) 2013 (NCAA Rank) Rushing Def. 168.7 (76th) 160.1 (61st) 141.4 (45th) Passing Def. 284.6 (116th) 197.3 (23rd) 146.4 (3rd) Pass Eff. Def. 137.6 (87th) 115.4 (27th) 81.7 (3rd) Total Def. 453.3 (106th) 357.4 (31st) 287.8 (10th) Scoring Def. 35.9 (108th) 24.2 (39th) 14.8 (11th) 1,000-YARD STREAK: Husky sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey breached the 1,000-yard mark for the 2012 season in the win over Utah. He finished the season with 1,439 yards, third-most in UW history. Sankey was just the 11th different player in UW history to rush for 1,000 yards and his season was the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. In four years under head coach Steve Sarkisian, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back each year. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of the last three seasons and Sankey took over the streak in 2012. THREE BOWLS IN FOUR YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reaching a bowl game last year for the third season while just four years removed from a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The Huskies were just the third team in the last 50 years of major college football to have gone from winless to three bowl games within four seasons. The only other programs to accomplish that feat are Indiana (winless in 1984; bowl games in 1986, 1987 and 1988) and Florida (winless in 1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983). In 2011, the UW became one of just eight teams ever to go to two bowls within three seasons after a no-win season. THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. This year, and 2014, the Huskies dont face Utah or USC. CAPTAINS: At the Huskies annual Raise the Woof! preseason celebration, the captains for the 2013 season were unveiled. This season, six captains were selected. On offense, senior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.), junior tailback Bishop Sankey (Spokane, Wash.) and junior guard Colin Tanigawa (Los Angeles) were honored. On defense, senior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), junior linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior defensive lineman Hauoli Kikaha (Laie, Hawaii) were selected. Price, Parker and Timu were all captains in 2012 as well. THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 187-593 (.757) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies are 3-1 this season. The Dawgs were 5-2 in such games last season. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 85 times. The Huskies record stands at 70-14-1 (.829) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 45-11-1 (.798) when rushing for 200 yards. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over the last 22 months or so as the entire lower bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com. HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2013 season marks the 93rd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UWs all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 360-169-21 (.674). FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jermaine Kearse, who now plays for the Seahawks. Junior WR Kasen Williams dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman (1979-82) wide receiver for the Huskies. Sophomore OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek (1986-89). Senior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, junior TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson.
