Chantal Akerman
(bornJune 6,1950) is aBelgianfilm director andartistcurrently residing inParis. She is known for her deconstructivestyle and pessimistic humour. Her films often represent her observations of identity, sexuality and politics. She has been widely regarded asone of Europe’s prolificauteur filmmakers. She is currently represented by theMarian Goodman Galleryin New York and Paris.

In 1971 Akerman moved to New York . She frequently attended theAnthology Film Archives and got acquainted with Americanexperimental film. Particularly the work of Michael Snow, Andy Warhol,Stan BrakhageandJonas Mekas. *Other noted influences includeRobert Bresson,Friedrich Wilhelm MurnauandYasujiro Ozu. Employing similar approaches - with lingering shots, minimal dialogue, desertedspaces, and symmetry - her films explore such themes as the passage of time and ritualistic behaviors.
