In above figure, Sagittarius {Dhanu} has been taken as ascendant [lagan] and is given at the top central point. Hence, Sagittarius is the First house, Capricorn in the Second house, Aquarius as third house, Pisces as in fourth house and so on. In this method, the position of any house can be known at a glance and no counting from the ascendant is needed. Thats why this method is very popular in India. 2. The South Indian Style:The south Indian chart has the sign in a Pisces Aries Taurus Gemini fixed order in the chart. The lagana is marked in 12 1 3 2 the appropriate sign. The remaining houses are counted in a clockwise manner. It may be noted Aquarius Cancer that the top column at the extreme left is always 11 4 the sign poses, and then it moves right hand side Leo clockwise. In this style no numerical or names of Capricorn 10 5 rashis are given in the chart to indicate the placement of signs [rashis] because sign are fixed Sagittarius Scorpio Libra Virgo and this understood automatically. However, the 9 8 7 6 ascendant and the planets are duly mentioned in the sign occupied by them in chart. A diagonal line is drawn in the house where the lagan occurs. i.e. Virgo [Kanya] is lagna in the chart given below:-
3. East Indian Style:East Indian style is commonly used in Assam, Bengal, Part of Orissa and Northern Indias Stated. This method is s compromise between North Indian and South Indian methods. In the sense that the Charta runs anti clockwise like the North Indian system and sign have fixed position in the south style.

The astrological chart is the exact chart of the heavens showing the various planets, as they could be seen in the heavens at that particular time, and from that particular place on earth. If an astronomical chart were to be constructed of that time, indeed all the planets and constellations would be visible in the sky same as shown in the astrological chart. Predictive astrology is an immense catalogue of cause and effects of the various positions, combinations of the planets and constellations that have been found to influence all aspects of life and civilization through the ages. Fundamentally, a person comes into existence at a specific time, at a specific place. This is the first time that person comes in direct contact with the external world and its surroundings, radiations, waves of the various planets and other celestial entities. Therefore, there is this specific chart showing the positions and combination of planets that were in effect for that person, and that chart is called the birth-chart. Its like a unique and natural identification for that individual.
CONSTELLATIONS
On a clear night, many stars are visible. A constellation is a group of stars. Many of these stars have always been observed together, in a group in a particular formation. Many of these star groups resemble some sort of a shape ;or from that humans sensibly and culturally identify with. For example, some groups seen together resemble the shape of a fish or a bull. The observable constellations were grouped together and roughly 2 of each constellation is grouped under some recognizable and predominant characteristic associated by us humans and called a Sign (of the Zodiac) or a Rasi.
CONSTITUTION OF CHARTS
The chart itself is a composition of three layers superimposed on each other, having a relationship to each other and giving meaning to each other. The chart is the simplified representation of the sky, divided into 12 parts. There are twelve constellation-signs in the zodiac; so each sign must get representation on the chart. This chart is like a plan of the sky made on paper. The plan of the sky is divided in 12 parts. Each part is called a house (or Bhava); the top most space is called the First house.
(47)
Each house has been allotted to represent an area of activity in our life for instance mother and mother related events to the 4th house, marriage and life partner to the 7th house and so on. Detailed list of main subjects to be considered under each house is given in further chapters of this course The central, top most space in the chart is the First house. Then, working anti-clockwise is the 2nd house, the 3rd house, the fourth house and so on. The position of each house is fixed. This plan of the sky on paper is the first layer of your birth chart. This consists of a chart with 12 fixed positions, called the houses. Mind you, the house numbers are not actually written in the houses because the notation of the houses, beginning from the first house, is always fixed by convention and therefore not written into the chart.
Note: These numbers indicating the House number are not given on the chart and their placement is always fixed in each drawing of the chart. From your date, time of birth and place of birth, the rising sign on the ascendant is calculated, this is the rising Sign of the zodiac that was there in the eastern horizon particularly at that date, time and particular place. Since the signs of the zodiac are also in a fixed sequence, the rest of the zodiac belt can also be written down. This is the second layer of the birth chart. Superimpose the second layer on the first layer. Being with the first house of the chart and write the sign-number of the rising sign in the First house (North Indian System). Working anti-clockwise o the chart, complete the sequence of the rest of the signs of the zodiac. For instance, if the rising sign of a person is Scorpio (sign no. 8), put down the numeral 8 in the first house of the chart. Next, working anti-clockwise put down the other signs in sequence, e.g., Sagittarius (no. 9) in second house, Capricorn (no. 10) in third house and so on till Libra (i. e., Rasi No. 7) occupies the last house.

one third i.e., 10 upon 30), Saptansha chart (division 7 upon 30), Navamsha chart (division: 9 upon 30), Dwadasansa chart (division: 12 upon 30), Trinsansa chart (division: one upon 30), and Shasatyansa chart (division: upon 30). (You will learn in STANDARD COURSE). The computer horoscope contain many other charts, but they are intended to increase the volume of the horoscope rather than for actual utility in the study of horoscope, because hardly one or two among one thousand astrologers have the competence to study and make genuine use of those charts relating to some specific point. For reaching much greater accuracy in predictions, two more charts are essentially needed. They relate to aspect of the planets on the 12 Houses and other one is inter-planetary aspecting, commonly known as the Grah drishti. Ashtak Varga of the planets-and-theascendant are also useful for reaching greater accuracy in prediction. (Youll learn in STANDARD COURSE) As in the case of family doctors, it is often advisable to have a family astrologer. Because, however learnt and experienced the astrologer, he/she would be more accurate in the predictions and about the point of time, if the astrologer has knowledge of the background and surrounding circumstances of the person requiring consultations. There are three main styles prevailing in India, which have traveled to other countries and continents. In India they are known as the North Indian style, East Indian style and South Indian style (As discussed earlier). Here we will learn only North Indian style, as it is easier to understand.
(50)
IN THIS LESSON, WE WILL DISCUSS ONLY THE BASIC NATURE OF HOUSES. IN THE COMING LESSONS, WE WILL TAKE ALL 12 HOUSES ONE BY ONE AND DISCUSS THEM IN DETAILS. FIRST HOUSE
First house as microcosm applies to everything in the horoscope; any planet that affects the ascendant (by occupying or aspecting it or, to a lesser degree, by conjoining or aspecting the first lord) will contribute its qualities to all parts of the natives life.
SECOND HOUSE
The second house is often taken as the extended family, in the almost undifferentiated sense of people close to you, an indication, which is derived from the proximity of the second house to the first. More properly, though, it indicates those to whom you are related by blood, marriage or adoption. This group, which changes over the course of a lifetime, can at various times include your parents, uncles and aunts, cousins, brothers and sisters, spouse, children and inlaws. A poorly placed Saturn in the second house can indicate a lifelong tendency to be separated or isolated from this ongoing family.
THIRD HOUSE
Most authorities take the third house to mean all brothers or sisters, but one school takes the eleventh to be the indicator of older siblings. Although the former view is more classical, the latter has been so frequently presented by modern native writers on Jyotish that it is now almost universal in India. Many learned traditionalists, though, still determine the number of siblings and their attributes and experience from an examination of the condition of the third house. Servants, who are often treated as extensions of the
(51)
family, are indicated by the third house because it is the second house away from the second house. The third house represents both the conscious mind and the arms and hands and, when the mind and hands function together coordinately, skill arises, which may become great prowess. The third house also represents communication that is done with the hands, such as writing and sign language.
FOURTH HOUSE
Fourth house is associated with inner matters like happiness, the satisfaction of the emotions; with the private life as opposed to the public life (the unseen sky versus the seen sky); with land, as opposed to sky; with wells (water below the earth); with ones domicile and sleeping, because at midnight most people are asleep, as natural circadian rhythms would encourage; with agriculture, things planted in (below) the earth; and with treasures of the hidden (buried) variety. The fourth represents that education which comes from parents and other ancestors (the formation of attitudes) and, by extension, from society in its role as parent (the educational system).
FIFTH HOUSE
North Indian Astrologers take this to be the house of formal education, since strong intelligence is often necessary for higher education, but many people obtain advanced degrees from venerable institutions without actually learning anything, and many welleducated people may lack formal education. Though education and intelligence often do correlate, it seems better to take the fourth house for education and the fifth for intelligence. The fifth house also rules teaching, the ability to educate, which is way it is associated with disciples and students. Another pervasive fifth house theme is that of creativity, be it procreation (creation of children) or creation of art, poetry or music, for both children and artists value spontaneity, amusement and fun. The fifth house being a house of dharma, it is associated with spirituality in its religious context
SIXTH HOUSE
Although the sixth house is not directly connected with healing as such, its association with disease means that planets which are beneficially placed in the sixth house may indicate individuals who benefit from ill-health, like healers, doctors, massage therapists, dietitians, rehabilitation therapists and the like. The sixth house rules debt because it is eight houses away from the eleventh house, and because it is a reflection house of the twelfth house of expenditure, which can drive one into debt. The sixth house is also associated with routines and habits, both productive and unproductive, possibly because after sunset both the light of day and the brilliance of sunset are gone but it is not yet time for bed, so ordinarily there is nothing out-of-the-ordinary to do; all is routine.
(52)
SEVENTH HOUSE
The seventh house is particularly linked to business partnerships because the seventh house of partnership is ten houses away from the tenth house of business. It also represents the spouse and marital status of individual. Because the first house indicates the birthplace and the seventh house is furthest from the first, the seventh indicates places far away from the birthplace, which leads Parashara to say that when the lord of the first house is in the seventh, the person will have his prosperity far away from home, all other factors being equal. Of course, the seventh also represents ones own home to some extent, being as it is the fourth house away from the fourth house.
EIGHTH HOUSE
The sixth house indicates debt, while the eighth usually indicates bankruptcy. Both the sixth and seventh houses also represent litigation, but eighthhouse litigation often involves severe legal difficulties that may destroy your life through long-term imprisonment, financial ruin, or humiliation by scandal. One well-known modern Astrologer associates the eighth house with traditional recitation of Indias sacred or classical Sanskrit knowledge; we have found this to be an accurate attribution, and perhaps yet another indication of the reflection meaning of the second house, which governs oral forms of knowledge. The eighth house (by being both the second house to the seventh house and a reflection of the horoscopes second house) may represent immediate support to a newly married woman.
NINTH HOUSE
The ninth house is generally associated with good luck and fortune, an association which is compounded by its being a house of dharma. The ninth house yields elegant and rightful prosperity and success that seem aptly bestowed awards for previous efforts. The rare meaning of loss of or change in career seems to arise from its position as twelfth house from the tenth house, and should be assumed to be likely only when the ninth is severely afflicted. The ninth is the most important, by being the most advanced, of the dharma houses, so here dharma is applied in a purer, more spiritual way. Being a reflection of the third house, but higher in the zodiac and in the sky, the ninth house stands both for purity of mind and for religion, which is supposed to purify the soul. The ninth house represents the guru because it represents the being with whom you will have opportunities to enjoy satsanga; a severely afflicted ninth house may give you a false or fallen guru, with whom you will enjoy kusanga. The ninth house represents the father for South Indian Astrologers, perhaps because in that society the ideal to this day is that the father is the guru to his children. The ninth can also indicate progeny (being fifth from the fifth) and the spouses brothers (being third from the seventh).
(53)
TENTH HOUSE
The tenth house, the highest point in the heavens visible to an observer, the place where planets reach their zenith, represents the zenith of human experience. Just as ninth represents the peak experience of dharma, the tenth is the peak of Artha, and the eleventh the peak of Kama. The tenth house, therefore, often indicates the professions, which are generally regarded as being superior to employment and other careers as ways to earn money. People normally secure any fame, honor or status indicated by the tenth house in their horoscope via their careers or as a result of their authority. The tenth house, the strongest of the Kendra houses, is a house of a action, and when it is associated with certain planetary combinations it can cause the native to renounce career, and often action in general, for religious reasons.
ELEVENTH HOUSE
Eleventh House represents gain, wealth, elder brother, sister, ambitions, and wishes. Examination of the eleventh house is most important when there is a question of recovery from illness, particularly a longstanding one. The eleventh house also represents: your paternal uncle (being third from the ninth); your childs wife (seventh from the fifth); your mothers longevity (eighth from the fourth); your employers wealth (second from the tenth); your enemys enemy (being sixth from the sixth; your enemys enemy is your friend); and being a government minister (being a reflection of the fifth).
TWELFTH HOUSE
The twelfth house of the horoscope represents losses of all kinds to the native. The twelfth house represents bed comforts because sleep is a loss of consciousness, and because sex is a loss of semen and other bodily fluids. It stands for enemies and imprisonment because it reflects the sixth house. The twelfth can represent charity, financial loss, or speculative investments, which involve a short-term loss but may result in a long-term gain. The twelfth house puts great emphasis on alien lands because it is the ninth house (a house of long-distance travel) from the fourth house of home. Completing of this existence implies the beginning of a new existence, so the twelfth also indicates the destination of the soul after death, be it heaven, hell, or the various other worlds. Since the twelfth is the last of Moksha houses, this after-death state may be Moksha that release from manifested existence, which is freedom from the need to exist.
(54)
BHAVA KARAKAS
The meanings of any house are principle influenced by two planets: its ruler and its karaka. While a karaka (Significator) is the planet, which rules the matter under consideration, a bhava karaka is a planet that has great natural affinity with many of the primary matters ruled by whatever house is under consideration. For instance, because both Jupiter and the fifth house. Similarly, since both the ninth house and the Sun rule the father, the Sun is a Significator of the ninth house. Everything a human being can experience is ruled by one or other of the planets and, because a planet becomes the karaka of what it rules, each planet may be the Significator for a wide variety of things. Many of the ruler- ships assigned to the planets in Chapter Four are in fact statements of planetary significations. The most common house Significator (bhava karakas) include: FIRST HOUSE: SECOND HOUSE: THIRD HOUSE: FOURTH HOUSE: Sun (health and vitality) Jupiter (wealth and family) Mars (younger siblings, courage, enterprise) Moon (the mother, emotions), Venus (vehicles), Mercury (education), Mars (property) Jupiter (children, speculation, statecraft, advice, intuition, condition of previous karmas, discernment) Mars (acute disease, litigation, bodily afflictions) and Saturn (debt, chronic disease) Venus (marriage, other relationships, passion) Saturn (unnatural desires, death/longevity, wills and legacies, accidents, bankruptcies, sudden unexpected torment and loss, chronic disease) Jupiter (preceptors, higher education, spiritual quests, charity, good or bad fortune) and Sun (the father, the soul) Mercury (commerce), Sun (government, authority, fame), Saturn (tradition, employment), Jupiter (professions) Jupiter (elder siblings, friends, gains) Saturn (segregation, solitude, losses)

Dussthana
A dussthana is a bhava whose primary meanings are associated with suffering. These houses represent the things in life that most people generally fear, like illness, loss and death. The third house tends to produce only slight fear, usually in relation to minor debts, which makes the other three bhavas much more malevolent than third. These three are referred to by the special term trik (House 6th, 8th, 12th)
UPACHAYAS
Upachaya means improvement. Certain astrological combinations involving these houses improve ones condition in life. These combinations will be considered later in the Standard Course, as will some seeming contradictions in the classifications of the bhavas (e.g., how the third and sixth houses can simultaneously be bhavas of both suffering and improvement).

MARAKAS
Maraka means killer. Westerners are often surprised to learn that Jyotish estimates an individuals longevity from the horoscope. Among the foremost factors to be considered in longevity analysis are the two-maraka houses, their lords, any planets occupying these two houses, and any planets conjoined with or aspected by the lords of the second and seventh houses. Certain combinations in a horoscope, such as when the lord of one maraka house occupies the other maraka house while being afflicted by malefics, can curtail life if the natives lifespan is already almost exhausted; otherwise that graha may simply perturb his or her health.

IMPORTANT NOTES
ARE SOME IMPORTANT TIPS AND RULES REGARDING THE ANALYSIS OF HOROSCOPE, WHICH YOU MAY NOT UNDERSTAND IN FIRST READING. BUT JUST READ IT AND TRY TO KEEP IN MIND. READ THEM AGAIN AFTER THE COMPLETION OF MODULE TWO. The first house and the planets, which influence it indicate the profession you have an inclination or talent for, while the tenth house, a Kendra like the first, represents the actual profession you pursue. The seventh house to any house reflects many of the original houses meanings. While the third house rules the conscious mind, the ninth represents the wisdom of the higher mind; the tenth is a house of the public, as is the fourth to some extent. The sixth house rules sickness, and the twelfth hospitals and isolation. One reason this mirroring effect occurs may be that any planet seven houses away from a house aspects that house. One of the fundamental meanings ascribed to the eight house is longevity, the number eight is consistently associated in Jyotish with longevity, The eighth house away from any house therefore indicates a limitation to the duration of effect of the matters of that house. Counting eight houses from the eighth house gives us the third house, which becomes a sort of derivative eighth house. Similarly, since the sixth house is a house of disease, the eleventh house, being the sixth, becomes a derivative house of disease. The ninth house, being fifth from the fifth, likewise becomes a derivative house of children. Since houses 6, 8 and 12 from the lagna are bad houses, and all the rest are basically good, the sixth, eighth, or twelfth house from any house often causes trouble to that house. Because the twelfth house of a horoscope is the house of loss, the twelfth that bhava indicates. Because the third and eighth houses of a horoscope are houses of longevity, the twelfth house counted from the eighth house i.e. the horoscopes seventh house and the twelfth from the third house i.e. the horoscopes second house) and become the houses of loss of longevity, or death. This is another reason why the second and seventh houses are marakas. Because the third house is twelve houses away from the fourth house, it may represent the end of residency or home (which means a move). It might also represent the end of the mother, or the partition of property. The sixth house from any house also holds ominous implications for that house. When the fifth lord sits in the tenth house it occupies the sixth house away from the house it rules. Normally planets that occupy the tenth house should give good results, since the tenth is a good house; but the lord of a house in the sixth from its own house should give bad results. This contradiction can usually (but not always) be reconciled by dividing the matters indicated by the fifth house into two classes: living beings (like children) and everything else (like intelligence, or speculation). The position from the lagna (the tenth house = a good house = good results) will tend to predominate for all indications of the fifth house other than living beings, which means that those things will tend to prosper. For living beings, however, the position of the house lord vis-a vis the house (tenth house = sixth from fifth = bad results) tends to predominate, suggesting difficulty begetting progeny, or problems with those children. Here is a general rule: When the lord of a house is in a good house as counted from the lagna and a bad house (sixth, eighth or twelfth) as counted from the house it rules, there will be a tendency for everything indicated by that house (except for living beings) to be initially obstructed and then to be rectified, while the living beings indicated by that house will tend to be more permanently disturbed.

(57)
When Mars for instance affects the ascendant, it colors all aspects of life with Martian colors, and so may give courage tinged with irritability, potentially aggressive behavior such as insulting speech, a Martian profession, Mars-related illnesses, and the like. When, however, Mars influences only the fifth house and but will not necessarily express those thoughts in words, because the fifth house rules intellect but does not rule speech.

APPLICATION NOW WE WILL APPLY ALL THESE RULES AND FEATURES IN THE EXAMPLE HOROSCOPE. IN THE COURSE STRUCTURE, AT EVERY STAGE WE WILL DISCUSS THE HOROSCOPE OF MRS. INDIRA GANDHI AND MR. RAJEEV GANDHI.
