Greetings and Salutations, At the time that most of you are reading this, my daughter will be one month old. I never thought that I would write that previous sentence. This is not because I was sure I would only have sons, but because I thought that I would never have children. Growing up, I did not like to babysit, nearly all of my friends were in older grades and the best discussions I had until college were with my teachers. I just didnt really care for kids all that much. This began to change when I was in college and was majoring in music education. Most of those kids were absolutely wonderful. Granted, music was an elective course, which meant that any kids I was dealing with wanted to be there. That helped tremendously. Those kids started changing my mind as I started to realize that they had their own thoughts and feelings. They were passionate about things and they were constantly changing. That change is what fascinated me. Going into seminary changed things even more. My first placement was with the Evangelical Childrens Home. This was a home for kids whose parents were losers. Nearly every kid there was dealing with abandonment; physical, emotional or sexual abuse; and/or drug abuse. Most of these kids were victims of horrific circumstances yet still pressed on. They continued to learn and to grow. As they matured, they didnt forget the circumstances that brought them to the home, but they allowed those circumstances to shape them into something better.

It was also during this time that I worked at church camp. This was no week in the summer kind of gig, but was a 12 week-long job. It was amazing. This was the polar opposite of the childrens home in nearly every way. Instead of being closed in and locked up, these kids were allowed to run and given some of their first taste of true freedom. (Often, they would complain about that statement because we took away their cell phones.) I saw kids from all walks of life getting along, fighting and making up, learning about God and enjoying themselves. Camp Mo-Val was and still is one of my favorite places in Missouri. So now we get to today. In one month Ive seen my daughter grow and change. In just a month, theres been so much. True, much is still the same; she eats, sleeps and poops, but she also now holds her head up more than usual, shes starting to make fleeting eye contact. On occasion, she even smiles now, though I think that its still a reflexive action. Every day theres something different and something new and it leads me to wonder, if we are all children of God, then does God watch us with the same wonder and concern? Do we change with the same speed that Anna is changing in my life? For my part, I hope so. Peace,

Gods Portion News and Refresher Ok people, were coming down to the wire. You will find in this newsletter a copy of the program for the day. Look it over for valuable information for Gods Portion Day. You might want to keep it and bring it with you on the big day. You will also find a list of suggested prices for donated baked goods and fresh produce. This is only a guideline, use your own judgment. Donations for the booths may be dropped off starting at 8:30 that morning. The Mish Mash booth will open at 9, offering an eclectic assortment of items for your selection. You may bring gift bags, home decorations, books, figurines, and craft items anything that doesnt fit anywhere else. This booth will close at 12:30, and if you want your unsold items back please pick them up by 1:00. Remaining items will be donated to the Salvation Army. The Silent Auction will also begin at 9:00, and close at 12:00. It will be held on the balcony outside the sanctuary doors. We prefer donations to be dropped off prior to Oct. 12, but if you bring something that day Karen will be there to receive donations from 8 am. Re. Set-Up: We will move the auction items from the balcony on Thursday evening. Inside set up will be Friday morning, and should be complete by lunch or thereabouts. The outside set up will begin Friday afternoon at 1pm. If 8 or 10 guys can help it will probably not take terribly long. Well be setting up the tent for the Mish Mash booth as well as the shelter house. Parade line up is at the west end of town watch for signs and/or people organizing the lineup. If possible please turn in your entry form early so the announcer will have your information as you roll by the microphone. Award winners can pick up their prizes from the treasurers in the fire station during the auction. For lunch the ladies would like people to enter the

Big south doors (at the top of the stairs) and go up to the sanctuary. The cashiers will be upstairs too, so the people will pay for their meal and receive a number, then take a seat. People will be called by number to go eat, as seating is available. Those who need the elevator may enter the church through the north doors (off the rear parking lot). We are striving to minimize the foot traffic through the area outside the kitchen doors, so the lunch crowd will not be allowed to enter through the small south doors (by the lamp post). Please assist visitors who may not understand the system and steer them to the correct entries. We truly appreciate your cooperation in this matter. There are two raffles this year. The 50/50 drawing tickets are red and sell for $1 each, or $5 for 6. We will take a pause during the auction at 2pm to draw the winner, who must be present to win. The regular raffle tickets are blue, and cost $3 each. The prize is a choice between an Amish-made picnic table or a meat bundle from Wever Locker. The first person drawn will get to choose which prize they want, and a second person will be drawn to win the remaining item. Additionally we will draw for a number of smaller prizes from the tickets that remain. As soon as lunch is over the cleanup and tear down begins. As soon as the booths are emptied THAT tear down can begin. And of course when the auction is over there are chairs and bleachers to put away. We respectfully request that all of us who can please spend 15 or 20 minutes before going home to lend a hand putting things away. If everyone will pitch in for a short time the work will be done with no hardship on anyone. If you have any questions please contact a committee member, or the Information Guru.
