From American Uprising
The Untold Story of Americas Largest Slave Revolt
By Daniel Rasmussen
T
hough Hai is now a very poor country, (in 1767) the soil of the island yielded untold
richesThe island accounted for over 60 percent of Frances export trade, and
more ships docked in its ports than in Marseilles or any other smaller French portAer
decimang the nave populaon, Europeans imported around half a million slaves from
the coasts of Africa to this ny island over the course of just a few decades.
That raising crops could be so protable seems very foreign to the modern eye, but in
that day and age the producon of sugar was the most protable form of agriculture.
Consider the famed Gallife plantaon, where 808 slaves worked to harvest the New
Worlds most lucrave crop. The master of the plantaon once asked, How can we
make a lot of sugar when we work only sixteen hours [per day]? the answer, he
concluded, was by consuming men and animals. And indeed, the Gallifet plantaon did
consume men, quite quickly and e ciently. These colonial plantaons were as close to a
death camp as one could come in the late 18th centuryFew slaves lived past age forty
and most died within a few years of starng plantaon work.

2
And all the Israelites
complained against Moses and Aaron; the whole
congregaon said to them, Would that we had died
in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this
wilderness!
3
Why is the LORD bringing us into this land
to fall by the sword? Our wives and our lile ones will
become booty; would it not be beer for us to go back
to Egypt?
4
So they said to one another, Let us choose a
captain, and go back to Egypt.
11:00 a.m.
NUMBERS 14:1-4 (THE MESSAGE)
1-3
The whole community was in an uproar, wailing all
night long. All the People of Israel grumbled against
Moses and Aaron. The enre community was in on it:
"Why didn't we die in Egypt? Or in this wilderness? Why
has GOD brought us to this country to kill us? Our wives
and children are about to become plunder. Why don't
we just head back to Egypt? And right now!"
4
Soon
they were all saying it to one another: "Let's pick a new

1
That night all the people of the community raised their
voices and wept aloud.
2
All the Israelites grumbled
against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly
said to them, If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this

3
Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to
let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be
taken as plunder. Wouldnt it be beer for us to go back
to Egypt?
4
And they said to each other, We should
choose a leader and go back to Egypt.

COME AND LET US SING
Come and let us sing
Come and let us sing
Come and let us sing
To the King of kings.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving
Enter His courts with praise.
He's worthy to be praised
Exalt his holy name
Glory and honor
Majesty and power.
Come and let us shout
Come and let us shout
Come and let us shout
To the Lord our God.
Come and let us dance
Come and let us dance
Come and let us dance
Li up holy hands.

If We Must Die

If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursd lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men well face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but ghng back!
