Panos: still very low
Stephen Jones: @ Heike. Don't know if I can give you ten reasons. But with the Skype/send
a document/share a document option, you have less control over what your student sees. You
also can not directly write on slides but have to work around it by sending text messages.
Classrooms are an absolute must in my opinion. Also, I think skype is rubbish for

Giselle Santos: are all countries eligible?
Elisa Delaini: yes, of course !
Kevin@Dimdim: @Heike, can't promise you it will never pop up again, but that usually
works until the host revokes your camera rights.
Chris: Isn't it nice to see the problems professionals have in the virtual classroom? How
much more dawnting must it be for a student.....
Giselle Santos: great
MissShonah: @D In skype you can go into tools and change these notifications
me: nice
me: @Chris totally agree
MissShonah: @Chris too true
Centigua: Stressful...for a teacher..or any professional...!
annehwang: @Debby.. you mention msn, is msn good for chat only or is there audio like
skype?
Kevin@Dimdim: @Chris, I'd love to know what you think would help. I think that's a
challenge with any real-time technology.
astrid: @Crhis yes that is just what i was thinking
Centigua: there is audio too and video in msn!
Chris: If we can't provide a smooth meeting....
me: 10 reasons of why skype is not enough, can I ask you all this question?
me: please start the chat with a big R
me: for exmaple
Centigua: No over over what the student is looking at!!
AmericanTeacher: Anneh MSN workslike skype, many people have asked me to use MSN
rather than skype - I've also had a student insist on using YAhoo - works in similar way
Chris: In my experience Skype and googledocs is quite enough...

MissShonah: Hi Yas :-0
Marina111: Skype + http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx(free 1:1)
Centigua: @ Heike @ Stephen yes I agree! Skype disadvantages no 1): no control over
which slide student is looking at. 2) No control over the environment...student can be chatting
with another skype friend 3)Teachers can be distracted by incoming contacts! 4) It can
suddenly go down 5) no interactive tools. Students cannot use a pen to draw match words
with definitions...and now I will listen to Elisa!
MissShonah:
me: by Stephen (R) more control on what the students see - nice one

me: konnichi wa amicamia

Koichi: before I can finish the sentence, haha
amicamia: hai,dear Heike
Stephen Jones: But most importantly, group lessons require student focus. You can only
really achieve that if you are sure students are looking at the same slides.
annehwang: @Giselle,interesting.. why?
Stephen Jones: With 1on1 it's easier
me: by Giselle (R) Skype is illegal in some countries
Centigua: too true, Stephen. Essentially the main disadvantage of skype is the lack of a
controlled environment!
AmericanTeacher: R - skype is a problem in some countried like China where there is an
incredibly rigid firewall
mike: what is the skype problem regarding
copyright?
MissShonah: @Giselle - in these countries what is the alternative?
shellyterrell: Heike thanks I didn't know Skype was illegal in some countries
Panos: Russia is discussing of banning or at least limiting its use
Stephen Jones: That I have to send my materials to the student (if I am not using Slidehare or
something). I can't always be sure who my students are.
amicamia: skype is illegal in the United Arab Emirates for ex.
Giselle Santos: elluminate was an option one of the teachers had
me: @Centigua, great list have to retweet - hehe - (R) @ Heike @ Stephen yes I agree! Skype
disadvantages no 1): no control over which slide student is looking at. 2) No control over the
environment...student can be chatting with another skype friend 3)Teachers can be distracted
by incoming contacts! 4) It can suddenly go down 5) no interactive tools. Students cannot use

annehwang: @Stephen, interesting.. so what's the safest way to give out your materials?
MissShonah: Thanks Giselle
me: by Harman (R) visualization, a picture speaks a thousand words and can be annotated in a
virtual classroom

Aniya: settlers for me..

Marisa Constantinides: sound's gone
Shelly Terrell: Aniya loll
amicamia: for me..just visitors
Aniya: what u laughing at Shelly?
Bob GlobalEschool.com: blended learning is what is happening now. virtual classrooms are
only part of the picture.
Aniya: true I agree
MissShonah: Maybe people are only happy with skype as they havne't had the experience in
any other platform-like a Virtual classroom
Aniya: a mix of many things work..
MissShonah: This sounds too true Aniya
Shelly Terrell: i have the problem that in a virtual classroom my students expect tech to work
perfectly but it doesn't
astrid hu: I think we know all this, but do students really want to use more tools?

MissShonah: Can we warn the students in advance that this is an innovative way to teach
and there may be ''hickups''??
kevin @ italki: If the sound quality is good and the tools are free (or close to free), I think it's
great...
Bob GlobalEschool.com: tech will never be 100% foolproof... backup is the key. right Koichi?
Shelly Terrell: My students are warned but their good argument is they are paying for it
Koichi C: yes!
amicamia: I don't think so.my students the ones until I met now-they have only given
importance on the quality of the context of the lesson and also the timing of the lesson
Koichi C: always something, right? :)
Aniya: yeah but I always seem to use plan B cause A doesn't work
Chris aka Sir G: Could you address the questions in the middle box!!!!!
Shelly Terrell: I always provide materials and record so they have materials
amicamia: ok
Shelly Terrell: they are happy about that but I don't know if all teachers do this
brigitte falkner: some virt.classrooms are less dataconsuming than skype and therefore can
be easiliy used by students with older PCs
Shelly Terrell: Definitely I think teachers have to make materials available offline as well just
in case tech doesn't work
MissShonah: Def Shelly
Kevin@Dimdim: Every platform has it's own ''unique characteristics'' -- I agree with Heike
that you have to take the time to learn it.
MissShonah: Great point Heike...what about those poor students that have to work with you
whilst you have your training wheels on :-)
Aniya: Agree Shelly, all my stuff goes via e-mail anyway so it's backed up if it can't be seen
on the screen
Heike Philp: muti-modality
Koichi C: very cool
Shelly Terrell: Those of you who provide materials via email, etc! This is why our students will
bare with us if the technology is not so gr8
Bob GlobalEschool.com: I use my ''training wheels'' with staff and associates before students
get to see me fumble.
amicamia (privately): lovess to Heike from Yasemin-jasmine teaCher amicamia-Turkey

Welcome back from "the hall"

Here are some of the reasons as to why Skype is simply not enough
1) Visualization - a picture speaks more than a thousand words and in the vc we can
annotate the image (comment by Harman)
2) Better control on which slide/picture the students are looking at (comment by Centigua)
3) Skype is illegal in some countries
4) Skype does not work in many companies due to firewall restrictions, whereas Adobe and
DimDim work
5) Groups can be handled better
6) Lesson slides communicate a course structure for students who want to 'see' their
progress
7) Full contact rich media environment
8) Plan B (back-up plan) for VC = Skype and vice versa
9) Corporate world uses this as a webmeeting, hence need to learn
10) We are the leaders as teachers, if we don't master the technology, how will they?
11) Multi-modality
12) We are advancing from the one-to-one skype lessons and become knowledgeable in
connecting students in a group lesson in a virtual classroom
13) Language teaching is text-based and slides is the landscape view of what used to be
book portrait view
14) Virtual classroom will be with us a loooong time
15) In future we teachers can choose courses ourselves - HOPEFULLY!

Koichi C: this side is just for asking questions, fyi

Heike Philp: where is the other one???
Stephen Jones: What does the panel believe needs to be improved with the various
'classrooms' currently available?
Chris aka Sir G: Nobody said anything about the TIME it takes to create slides that very often
SAY practically nothing and may in fact be a distraction!

Stephen Jones: Slides only really come to life with the presenter. They might look like they
don't make sense but they should come to life once in the hands of the presenter
Stephen Jones: Structure
Stephen Jones: Students need to feel thereis direction and structure
Chris aka Sir G: I agree, Stephen, but maybe the rock-star teacher only ever needs a very
few slides...
Stephen Jones: If you don't use slides, you have to have a very clear structure in your head.
Chris aka Sir G: True!
Stephen Jones: Slides are something for students to hang onto (for the student) in an ocean
of tech problems
kevin @ italki: Question: Sorry to ask a more technical question -- but I guess one of the
main issues I wonder about is internet connectivity. Who carries the bandwidth for Virtual
Classrooms? One fo the benefits of Skype is that it is carried on P2P traffic. Virtual
Classrooms are great, but it needs someone to carry (and pay for) that traffic. (sorry this was
so long)
Elisa Delaini: learning path
Elisa Delaini: there is a direction
Elisa Delaini: of course, it is ALWAYS a choice
Chris aka Sir G: Many potential students are unaware of the existence of virtual classrooms.
The question is: Should we enlighten them? As long as virtual classrooms are so unreliable,
isn't it safer to ''play it safe'' on skype?
Heike Philp: great question
Koichi C: i'd say it's pretty reliable?
Koichi C: as long as internet connection is good
Chris aka Sir G: Not what we've experienced tonight!
Koichi C: that's a big if sometimes though :)
Stephen Jones: I agree with Koichi
Elisa Delaini: i think for the state of the technology, it is most of the times reliable
Elisa Delaini: but when it is not
Elisa Delaini: it is very demotivatinhg
Chris aka Sir G: ...for the teacher and the student!
Elisa Delaini: so i understand the teacher's concern
Elisa Delaini: yes, for both
Elisa Delaini: good thing about IT: they say it is constantly evolving ;-)
Chris aka Sir G: things can only get better?
Elisa Delaini: yes, and they will.
Aniya: So what is your favourite virtual classroom?
Stephen Jones: Englishtown
Aniya: which one is that?
amicamia: yeah..teachers-we also introduce our student the technology
Stephen Jones: My favourite...:-)
Aniya: ha ha
Stephen Jones: But not my favourite website!
Aniya: can't have all..
Elisa Delaini: :-) i think we can wrap up
Koichi C: haha yes, all my work is piling up, thanks to all of you! ;)
