Challenge Based Learning Lessons from Your Loquacious

In attending in an all day workshop on challenge based learning, Mrs. Myers learned how students can engage in collaborative learning to solve a problem. Mr. Cookseys students kicked off the process of studying homelessness by participating in a DISCUS quest led by Mrs. Tighe. Mrs. Myers will help evaluate the interview questions the students generate. Mr. Eargle and Mrs. Myers planned a CBL where the students will tackle the issue of apathy. During the project, students will learn how to create a survey, analyze data, make a graph, write a script, and create an iMovie. Challenge based learning is cross curricular and covers multiple common core strands. For example, the apathy project will cover six common core and six ISTE standards. Ask your friendly loquacious librarians about creating a CBL with you!

We will gladly create an account for you! Also, teachers, please let us know titles or topics that you would like to see added to Follett Shelf (our ebook platform).

Teen Read Week

The theme for Teen Read Week was Seek the Unknown. The library staff created a special display featuring books that reflected the theme Unknown. Students could also participate in two contests: Shredded Evidence and Picture the Unknown. For Shredded Evidence, students had to guess what book was shredded (dont worry, it was a damaged book) in the jar. Picture the Unknown was hosted online through Edmodo.

Get Graphic
Graphic novels can be part of our common core curriculum. They serve as informational texts where students need to analyze visual elements, engage in complex reading, and gain information from illustrations. The importance of graphic novels in multiple classes (social studies, English, science, etc) can be inferred from the simple fact that a session on graphic novels was presented at an ASCD (Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development) Conference. So stop by, ask us about our graphic collection, and let us help you integrate some of these great books into your curriculum!

Definitely DISCUS
Contact Mrs. Tighe about working with your classes in implementing DISCUS. Mrs. Tighe worked with Mrs. Byerss classes by putting a powerpoint presentation on Edmodo. The presentation helped students with research questions and using DISCUS while doing work from home. Mrs. Newett also collaborated with Mrs. Tighe. Mrs. Newett created scavenger hunt questions for her students while Mrs. Tighe found the database that was best suited for answering the questions. Mrs. Tighe showed the students how to use Pages in order to create their answer sheets. With collaboration from students, they uploaded the Pages document into the Edmodo backpacks.

Building Communities
Mrs. Myers contacted Home Depot about building birdhouses with Mrs. Britos classes. Students learned important skills (everyone learned that SHHHHH is not in our vocabulary) and had loads of fun. Contact us if you would like to connect your class with a community group or member.
