Turkey, stuffing, football and the Macys Day parade. That is what makes a perfect Thanksgiving Day. As the lead banner proclaims, the event is presented as a Holiday Treat for Children Everywhere. Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade was originally operated by Macys employees, many of whom emigrated to America from Europe and longed to stage a celebration similar to the ones in their countries. The first parade was held in 1924, entertaining an estimated audience of over 10,000. That year it was called the Macys Christmas Parade, and it followed a route from 145th Street and Convent Avenue to the Macys store at 34th Street and Broadway. Three floats (pulled by horses), four bands and zoo animals from the Central Park Zoo -- camels, donkeys, elephants and goats -- starred in the parade. Santa Claus was last in the lineup, a tradition that continues to this day. In 1927, the gigantic balloons that are now the signature element of the parade made their first appearance with the help of helium. (Macys is the worlds second largest consumer of helium. The United States government if the first.) The balloons, produced by the Good Year Tire and Rubber company, replace the zoo animals that were frightening to some children and the first balloon included cartoon characters like Felix the Cat. At the conclusion of the parade, the giant balloons were released into the air. In 1929, Macys began offering a $50 reward for any returned balloons, which were affixed with return address labels. In 1931, pilot Col Clarence E. Chamberlain snagged a balloon with his airplanes wing, leading to a ban on retrieval by airplanes the following year. But after the 1932 parade,

another pilot attempted to capture a balloon and nearly crashed, leading Macys to discontinue releasing the balloons at parades end. In 1934, celebrities became an important element of the parade, with singer-actor Eddie Cantor joining in the event that year. The Mickey Mouse helium balloon was also introduced to parade-goers. From 1942 to 1944, the parade was canceled because of the shortage of helium and rubber during World War II. Those three years are the only time the celebration had been called off. The parade became a permanent part of American culture after being prominently featured in the 1947 film, Miracle on 34th Street, which shows actual footage of the 1946 festivities. The event was first telecast nationally in 1952. On the NBC telecast from in front of the flagship Macys store on Broadway and 34th Street the marching bands perform live music but most of the other live acts such as songs from Broadway musical use pre-recorded music with the performers lipsyncing their singing. The Parade has always been known for its policy of going on rain or shine and the valiant efforts of the balloon wranglers should always be recognized. But, new safety measures were incorporated in 2006 to prevent accidents and balloon related injuries. One measure taken was installation of wind measurement devices to alert parade organizers to any unsafe conditions that could cause the balloons to behave erratically. Also parade officials implemented a measure to keep the balloons closers to the ground during windy condition. Every year, the Macys team behind the parade works to outdo the previous years event. loons, more floats, better materials and new technologies, all resulting in the flashy spectacle that rolls through the streets of New York today. Today, the Parade delights two million spectators along the line of march, and mil-

AMERICAS THANKSGIVING PARADE DETROIT One of the nations best Thanksgiving parades is celebrating in a grand way as Americas Thanksgiving Parade is celebrating 87 years of marching, smiles, clowns and bringing families together in Detroit! Detroits parade is one of the countrys oldest and most celebrated Parades and will step off at 9:05 a.m. on Woodward Avenue and Mack and end at Woodward Avenue and Congress in downtown Detroit. The Parade Company has recently announced that Art Van Furniture has become the presenting sponsor of Americas Thanksgiving Parade. The Van Elslander family will proudly walk the Woodward Avenue parade route, waving to the millions of spectators watching in person and on television across the country. six years. Many leaders in Chicago searched for ways to boost the economy as well as public spirit. Walter Gregory, President of Chicagos State Street Council, proposed a Christmas parade to Chicago Mayor Edward Kelly in the hopes that it would improve the moods of Chicago residents. The Mayor agreed to the parade, being primarily interested in its potential to improve Chicagos economy. Chicagos first Christmas Parade was on State Street on December 7, 1934. Gregory and a costumed Santa Claus led the caravan, which was filled with toys and various merchandise from State Street businesses. As the citys government offi-

cials had hoped, the parade contributed to desirable growth in the local economy and 1934 held the citys largest holiday buying period since 1927. This was both exciting and surprising for the entire city. Not only was it the Depression, but that day held dangerously low temperatures throughout the entire state. Some areas of Illinois were as low as fourteen degrees below zero. Through trial and persistence the tradition of this fantastic parade has survived and grown.
