These mitts are warm, comfortable, and attractive. The average knitter can make a pair in about 2 hours. SIZE
These fit a woman with a 6.5 (16.51 cm) wrist and an 8.5 (21.59cm) palm. The thirteen year old pictured has the same size palm, but a wrist of 6 (15.24 cm). The mitts fit both of us equally well. Changes in size can be obtained by decreasing or increasing the number of cast on stitches. FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 7.125 long and a 7 circumference; Fit is comfortable but not loose. It appears small at the beginning, but knits to specifications. If you like a looser fit, add 1-3 stitches.

MATERIALS
Super bulky yarn [5-6 wpi] was used. I used De Aire by Plymouth Yarn Company [100% Merino wool, 109 yds/100 meters per skein]; [1 ] skein made 3 mitts. 1 set US #10/6.00 mm double-point needles ( 5 needles); Notions required: Large eye darning needle. No stitch markers are required, as the tail marks the beginning of the round and thumb gusset.

GAUGE
14 sts/20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch in the round.

Skills Required
Cable cast on, knitting in the round, make one left (M1L) and make one right (M1R); There are several videos on www.youtube.com that explain how make these increases.

Directions
Using a cable cast on, cast on 21 sts and join for working in the round. Your tail marks the beginning of the round. Work using 4 needles (3 have stitches, 1 is your working needle). Knit 2 (5.1 cm) even (knit all sts).

Thumb gusset: You will now use 5 needles: M1L before you knit any stitches in this round, then k1 stitch, M1R (3 sts on your thumb gusset needle). This will be your thumb gusset needle. Do not place any additional stitches on your thumb gusset needle. Use the 5th needle to knit the remainder of the stitches on the left needle. Knit the remainder of the round. Your thumb gusset needle now has 3 sts on it: two you made and one regular stitch. K1 round even. Repeatable Section: Rounds 1: M1L, knit all sts of thumb gusset needle, M1R , knit the remainder of the round. Round 2-3: knit even. Repeat rounds 1-3 until there are 11 sts on the thumb gusset needle. Knit 2 rounds even (4 rounds even since last increase round). Next round: Bind off all thumb gusset sts, knit to end of the round. Next round: Knit tightly across the gap then continue knitting in the round. Knit even for 2 ( 5.1cm). Bind off as follows: Doing a normal bind off, bind off, but after each stitch, elongate the stitch just made by tugging at it so that the maximum amount of yarn is taken up, but dont make the stitch unnaturally slouchy. If you tend to bind off very tightly, use a 10.5 needle to bind off. Weave in all ends. Good Job!
