• HISTORY OF

NTS & ERRORS.

• “BUILT ON THE
BEST OF THE
PAST”.
OBJECTIVES
• TO UNDERSTAND THE
EVOLUTION &
CHRONOLOGICAL
DEVELOPMENT OF
REPERTORY
• TO UNDERSTAND THE
VARIOUS CONCEPTS
• TO UNDERSTAND THE
PRESENT AND FUTURE
TRENDS.
• TO MAKE THE BEST USE
OF AVAILABALE
LITERATURE.
• “May The Devil Take All The
Repertories. They destroy that
which belongs together and
unite points,which are foreign
to each other, only for the sake
of adhering to the A,b,c of
children’s reading books. In
order to be able to form a
characteristic picture with its
lights and shades from them,
one would have to carry in
one’s head the whole Materia
Medica Pura ready for use, and
then the repertories would be of
less value than ever.”

LETTERS TO
BOENNINGHAUSEN
BY
MASTER HAHNEMANN
Hahnemann writes to
Boenninghausen
• “ The repertory which was
announced without my
approval is ready, but as I
have been on friendly terms
with Arnold for 20 years , I
can not look for another
publisher. ”
• Life History Of Hahnemann, Richard
Haehl M.D. vol.-II , pg. no - 263 ,
supplement - 124.

,1831

repertory was an alphabetical record,

could only be of great service in

yet to be found in mine.
erefore not to be regretted
remains unpublished. ”

Of Hahnemann , Richard Haehl , M.D. ,

Hahnemann writes to

“A dictionary of symptoms would
occupy an efficient and very
industrious
assistant secretary,
uninterruptedly for a whole
year”.

Vol.-II, pg. no - 264, supplement - 124.
Hahnemann writes to Boenninghausen (contd)

God permits, Jahr will workout the symptom

ionary, and I shall contribute what I can.
s gifted for it, and has unswerving
gence. I think that it will have to be
ted as one large octavo dictionary ,
cramer’s dictionary printed by vieweg.
ill be an immense but valuable work.”

History Of Hahnemann , Richard Haehl , M.D. ,

I , pg. no - 264 , supplement - 124.
Hahnemann writes to
Boenninghausen (contd.)

If homoeopaths become aware that

the repertories are insufficient for the
finding of the best remedy in every
case of disease, nevertheless they
feel secure when they have such a
key in hand and calm their minds
with the reflection that “ with some
probability. ”

Life History Of Hahnemann , Richard Haehl M.D.,

Vol.-II , pg. no - 379 , supplement - 183.
Hahnemann’s effort in
making a Repertory
1805 : FRAGMENTA DE VIRIBUS
MEDICA MENTORUM POSITIVIS.
• 1817 : A short Repertory hand
written 4 volumes of repertory
to use in his daily practice,
consisting of 4239 pages with
slits to hold
1830-32 : Made a voluminous
repertory, could not publish.
It is obvious that master
Hahnemann strongly felt
the need of a repertory,
developed it into an idea
and started working in
that direction, but for
various reasons he could
not publish it. So the
profession had to look
upon others for a useful
repertory.

BOENNINGHAUSEN ERA
 1832 : Boenninghausen’s repertory of the
Anti-psorics with a preface by Hahnemann.

 His work also kindled a new interest in the

area of compiling repertories and during the
next six decades, more than 30 repertories of
different kinds were available to the
practitioners.
BOENNINGHAUSEN ERA
Boenninghausen’s era continued for many
years and his repertory gave birth of
different concepts of repertories, like -
• - Repertory of Characteristic symptoms
• - Nososlogical repertory
• - Alphabetical Repertory
• - Regional Repertory
• - Mechanically Aided Repertories like
- Card Repertory

Various other repertories

• 1869—Repertory of diarrhoea by Bell

• 1873—Repertory of eyes by Berridge

Minton
• 1888—Guernsey’s Boenninghasen

Pulford
but during the last quarter of the 19th century, the
area of repertory became over crowded. This
created chaos & confusion
• chaos & confusion in the
profession prepared a suitable
ground for the emergence of a
repertory, well organized,
systematically planned , and
based on sound philosophy. This
was successfully accomplished
by Kent in 1897.
