Report Cards

On Friday, November 15, students in kindergarten through fifth grades will bring home
the first progress reports of the year. First trimester ended on Friday, November 1.
Please review your childs progress with him/her. Children often experience a range of
feelings regarding their report cards.

When reviewing your childs progress, you may want to keep the following in mind:

Celebrate accomplishments, behavior, attitude, and participation in class and in
other areas of the school. Ask your child to discuss the different subject areas,
citing his/her favorite, what is appealing about it and what was learned. Identify
areas of strength.
Review scores that are below or approaching the standard, but avoid blame or
punishment. Identify the areas that need attention and together, devise an
appropriate plan for improvement.
Ask your child to cite subjects in which s/he put forth effort, may have struggled,
but persevered with tasks and realized that attitude influences learning. These
concepts, cultivated and refined throughout the school years, will assist your child
in being successful with a range of tasks, in school and in other areas of daily life.

The assessment scoring is based upon a 4-point rubric, with the goal of reaching
Proficiency, or a rubric of 3, by the end of the school year on specific standards and
measurement topics. Students and their parents have the opportunity gauge their
progress towards mastery of a specific set of learning goals.

Rubric Scores:

4-Exceeds the Standard (Advanced): Student takes initiative to exceed the standard;
consistently produces excellent work and demonstrates an exceptional level of
understanding, applying and transferring advanced skills and complex thinking into the
district curriculum standard. Student is independent and self-directed in extending the
learning process and usually exceeds assignment requirements.

3-Meets the Standard (Proficient): Student produces work that meets the standard;
frequently produces work of high quality, successfully demonstrating mastery of the
content (skills/concepts) in the district curriculum standard. Student regularly applies
thinking skills and learning strategies, and meets assignment expectations.

2-Approaching the Standard (Basic): Student demonstrates a basic working
knowledge of the content (skills/concepts) in the district curriculum standard; produces
satisfactory work and usually applies skills/concepts correctly. Progress is evident in
applying thinking skills and learning strategies. Student inconsistently meets assignment
expectations.

Continued

Principals Message (continued)

1-Does Not Meet the Standard (Below Basic):
Student is performing below the district standard. With help, the student demonstrates
partial understanding of the basic skills/concepts. There is limited progress in applying
thinking skills and learning strategies. Student usually does not meet assignment
expectations and seldom produces work of satisfactory quality.

If you have questions or concerns about your childs report card, please consult with
his/her teachers. Thank you.

From: Mary Kamerzell, Superintendent of Schools

Subject: Open Enrollment for School Year 2014-2015

Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-816 Catalina Foothills School District will begin its open enrollment
procedures for the 2014-2015 school year effective December 1, 2013. The law requires every
Arizona school district to follow a prescribed procedure and timetable for admitting out-of-
district transfer students and resident transfer students (those who live in the District but are
attending a school outside the attendance area of their residence). All students who currently
attend CFSD schools and reside in other districts, and all CFSD resident students who are
attending a different school than they would based on their residence, are impacted by this law.

We require that all open enrollment students apply for admission each year.
Therefore, if your child is a resident transfer (open enrollment) student and you want him/her to
continue in that capacity, or if your child resides outside of the district and you want him/her to
continue to attend a CFSD school next year, please complete an application form between
December 1, 2013, and February 28, 2014.

Open Enrollment applications and information regarding the application
process are on the district web site, www.cfsd16.org (as of December 1, 2013), or
at the district office Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The district office is located
at:

Catalina Foothills School District
J. W. Murphey Administration Center
2101 E. River Road
Tucson, AZ 85718
(520) 209-7539

Applications will be available as of December 1, 2013, and may be completed on line
(www.cfsd16.org), or submitted in person at the district office. Electronic applications must be
submitted no later than February 28, 2014, and hard copies by 4:00 p.m. February 28, 2014.
Decisions about admission, based on capacity, will be made by April l, 2014. At that time, all
applicants will be notified whether their applications have been accepted, wait listed, or declined.

Dear CFSD Community:

The outcome of our District 16 election on November 5 yes to propositions 406 and

On behalf of the Catalina Foothills School District Governing Board and everyone who
works in our schools adults and students alike we thank you for your support. We
promise to be good stewards of these tax dollars to provide a high quality educational
program for our communitys children.

Sincerely,

Mary Lou Richerson Mary Kamerzell
