This twice-weekly course will allow you to extend and deepen your knowledge of academic writing. We will be looking at ways to improve clarity, argumentation and style.

This course is for students who would like to think through how and why life is different at a UK university. Key concepts will be considered and strategies suggested not just for survival, but also to excel while you are in the UK studying.
Tuesday 15, 22 & 29 October Essay Writing In this course, we will look at the purpose of essays and the key concepts in essay-writing, focusing in particular on argument. We will also discuss referencing, and how to avoid plagiarism, and students will analyse examples of good and bad essay-writing. 3 Wednesday 6 & 13 November 2

This programme is targeted at students taking the LLM programme in the Law School who have not attended the Pre-sessional English language programme. This course deals with the specific challenges of writing essays and argumentation in the area of Law.

Wednesday 16 October Studying effectively is essential to your success in the university environment. The first session focuses on using your time effectively and planning your use of time. The second session looks at active learning and effective reading strategies providing ways to maximise the efficiency of your reading.

Living in the UK 1
This three-week course is for students who would like a greater understanding of the country in which they are studying. Key concepts relating to the UK will be explored through the use of extracts from various media and the study of key words.

Living in the UK 2
This three-week course provides students with language and practice opportunities for three important areas of communication: 1. Getting things done, 2. Networking, 3. Dealing with problems. As well as focusing on language, students will also be encouraged to consider cultural aspects of using English so as to ensure optimal success at communication while living in the UK.

Tuesday 5 & 12 November These will be two highly interactive sessions designed to build language skills and confidence. The main focus will be: understanding the concept of the seminar, making effective contributions to seminar discussion and useful language for seminars.

Tuesday 19 November This workshop-style class will focus on free e-resources available to students. The focus of the classes will be tools that students can use outside of class to improve their academic writing style, express themselves more precisely and improve the accuracy of their writing in English.
