Winter Views

Good to see KILMORACK GALLERY entering into the spirit of the season with their WINTER EXHIBITION which runs right up until 15 MAR. Winter is my favourite time to be in the gallery, says director Tony Davidson, adding that Its a time for sharing a coffee (or whisky) round our large stove. It is also a relaxed mixed exhibition, which allows us to try some new artists as well as old favourites. Those old favourites are: KIRSTIE COHEN, HELEN DENERLEY, ALLAN MACDONALD, CHARLES MACQUEEN, ILLONA MORRICE, EUGENIA VRONSKAYA and many more. All of them produce new and sometimes smaller work especially for Christmas. And the new artists? These will soon be announced on the gallerys website - kilmorackgallery.co.uk In a similar vein, WINTER BEAUTY at EDEN COURT from 03 DEC05 JAN follows on from the success last year of a similar enterprise, having taken submissions from artists of all levels. Therell be a generally wintery theme to proceedings so its well worth stopping by if youre out on a constitutional. And if youre in town head along to IG:LU in Church Street for their XMAS SHOW running from FRI 13FRI 20 DEC, then TUE 07FRI 24 JAN. Previous Xmas shows have featured some truly great talents established and new and this one should be no exception. Deliciously, its titled F1RST AGAINST THE WALL, but the rest remains hush-hush. Crying, Fighting, Laughing.

Good to see EDEN COURT entering into the spirit of the season by screening a trio of Xmas movies, including SCROOGED (THU 19 & SAT 22 DEC) and BAD SANTA (SAT 21 DEC) but most essential of which is ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE (FRI 20TUE 24 & THU 26 DEC). One day someone will try to convince you that its not all that, just sentimental melodrama. And theyll be wrong. But when it comes to new releases, its not all about peace and goodwill to all men - oh, no - quite the opposite in fact. If you like a bit of ghty--punchy--stabby stuff, then theres quite a range of earnest conicts to choose from: Fans of Chan-wook Parks awesome OLDBOY [1] will be interested to see how Spike Lees remake (VUE from 06 DEC; EC from 27 DEC) matches up as JOSH BROLIN, SAMUEL L JACKSON, ELIZABETH OLSEN and the excellent SHARLTO (District 9) COPLEY star in the yarn about a man setting out to nd out why he was kidnapped and locked into solitary connement for years with no reason. Meanwhile, KEANU REEVES (remember him?) gets a new outing - albeit playing a Samurai - in the rather dramatic-looking 47 RONIN [2]. More straightforward this - big swords and armour. Rather gentler in approach will be THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG [3] (VUE & EC from FRI 13 DEC) - theres still plenty of ghting going on, only its all a bit velvety-elfey-cutesy by comparison with the two aforementioned titles. No, whats really noticeable about Smaug is that is pairs up Sherlock Holmes (playing the dragon) with his trusty sidekick John Watson (reprising his Bilbo role) again. It seems the internet cant wait for the new (tv) series of Sherlock to begin - which it will, incidentally, over the festive period - so ber-fans will have to get their CUMBERBATCH/FREEMAN x here for now. The BEST lm release for December however, takes its confrontation and tucks it up nice and cosy in a big uffy lump of comedy. ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES [4] nally arrives (VUE from 20 DEC) and we get to rejoin Ron Burgundy (WILL FERREL) and his gang of mists, Brian (a stunning PAUL RUDD), Brick (STEVE CARELL) and Champ (DAVID KOECHNER), with Veronica Corningstone (CHRISTINA APPLEGATE) and Wes Mantooth (VINCE VAUGHN) also returning to this sequel. Add a host of star names - HARRISON FORD, KRISTEN WIIG, LIAM NEESON, JIM CARREY, KIRSTEN DUNST, SACHA BARON COHEN, TINA FEY, to name but a few - and you have yourself the best entertainment on offer this month. And if you like your cinema really gentle, then youre in luck also: Three big releases SAVING MR. BANKS [5] (VUE from 29 NOV; EDEN COURT FRI 27TUE 31 DEC & THU 02 JAN), telling the story of how Mary Poppins was brought to lm, with TOM HANKS (smarming as Walt Disney) and EMMA THOMPSON giving potentially award-winning performances. That is likely to have the edge in terms of quality over the animation FREE BIRDS - in which two turkeys team up to go back in time to stop turkeys getting on the seasonal menu in the rst place. WOODY HARRELSON and OWEN WILSON lead the cast of voicers, plus GEORGE Sulu TAKEI and AMY Parks and Recreation POEHLER. And then theres BEN STILLERs SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY. Saccharine, mawkish and self-pleasuring? Quite possibly. more at: whatsonhighlands.com

If You Must Go Out

The festive season is, of course, a time for kids and families, so we shouldnt perhaps be encouraging you to do anything else other than sit around the house enjoying each others company, playing games and perhaps gathering round the piano for a jolly run-through of a selection of carols. If you must leave all that domestic bliss for something, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Yuletide in public, nowhere more suitably than in the self-explanatory STICKY KIDS CHRISTMAS SINGALONG at BOAT OF GARTEN COMMUNITY HALL on THU 12 DEC, with Molly and Mac taking charge of a seasonal show involving lots of laughs and lively action songs for 26 year olds. Back in the Highland metropolis is WINTER WONDERLAND in WHIN PARK from 1315 DEC with Santa and his reindeers making their by now regular stop-off in the Highlands while working on the logistics for delivering presents to every child in the world in the space of a single night. When not poring over a calculator and motivating his elves, Santa will no doubt be pleased to say hello. Not strictly Xmas related, but certainly capturing the excitable mood is the FREE DROP-IN TEDDY BEARS PICNIC on SUN 15 & SUN 22 DEC at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY from 11am4pm. Part of the unmissable Teddy Bear exhibition at the museum it gives kids the chance to meet a life size bear and bring along their favourite teddy for a fun drop-in session of activities including a treasure hunt, storytelling in the teddy bear shed, teddy bear crafts and snacks. An animal of quite a different kind at HUMM - BUG! At EDEN COURT from MON 16FRI 20 DEC. Finally, Hogmanay fun for the little uns with the WEE HOT HIGHLAND FLING on, you guessed it, 31 DEC, with lots of kid-friendly activities planned for the afternoon throughout the city. And if you can keep them up long enough - check out the Castle at about 8.14pm. Again, invernessfestivals.com for more details. More kids features & events at: whatsonhighlands.com

Seeing the year out with a Bang

Theres plenty of gigs in December to tempt you away from the ofce party or out from under the Xmas deccies but lets start with the nish: Hogmanay is the biggest night of the year up here - and as youd expect, theres some big nights on offer where you can bring in 2014 with a crowd, the biggest of which will be at THE RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING in NORTHERN MEETING PARK ARENA. Comedian CRAIG HILL returns to his now traditional compere slot with music just right for the occaision from DOREC-A-BELLE [2], SKERRYVORE [3] and of course, RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS [4]. Kick off is 8.30pm - but while youre walking in, pause a while in view of the Castle at 8.14pm - youll be pleased you did (a hint: Homecoming 2014 ofcialy starts right then). See inside back pages Other signicant Hogmanay options likely to get rather lively include BOGMANAY at BOGBAIN FARM - featuring a ceilidh from BRUCE MACGREGOR & FRIENDS, plus performances from DONALD MCDONALD & THE ISLANDS, MYSTIC SHOES and GRAMAPHONE DJ (stovies, nibbles and entry bubbly all included) and RHYTHMNREEL at IRONWORKS bringing their celebratory 20th year to a close. Sore heads optional. Fans of classic rock (were looking at you, Toby Michaels) should iron their bandanas and polish their cowboy boots for the visit of BLACK STAR RIDERS [1] to IRONWORKS on THU 05 DEC. They feature the THIN LIZZY DNA of Ricky Warwick, Scott Gorham, Damon Johnson and Marco Mendoza - augmented by ex-Megadeth drummer JIMMY DEGRASSO. As if that werent enough rock royalty for you, they are supported by DEAD DAISIES - who, as well as sporting members of Guns N Roses and INXS, feature the uber-talented bassist DARRYL JONES - member of the Stones for the last 20 years but more notably started out playing with Miles Davis before playing a starring role with Weather Report. Tasty. TORRIDON do their high energy Celtic-Rock thang at IRONWORKS on FRI 13 Dec but for a more restrained form of folk, national hero DOUGIE MACLEAN [5] plays STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on FRI 06 DEC whilst more quality songsmithery can be beheld on SUN 01 DEC as ex-Squeeze man, GLEN TILLBROOK [6] performs at IRONWORKS. THE VIEW [7] have always been big Squeeze fans as their magnicently raddled cover of Cool For Cats demonstrates. It just might get an airing at IRONWORKS on THU 19 DEC as they negotiate that slightly difcult period in their career when theyre way past being bright young hopes, but not yet national treasures. And staying with Ironworks, they have 3 distinct ways to shake your booty in the forms of ALABAMA 3 [8] (SUN 08 DEC), SISTER BLISS [9] (SAT 14 DEC) and SLAM [10] (SAT 28 DEC). Terric nights, all three. For more Hogmanay events, etc, visit whatonhighlands.com

LARRY LOVE: Alabama 3

Ironworks, Sun 08 Dec

ALABAMA 3 must have played Inverness and the Highlands more than any other visiting band over the past few years and theyre always a whole lot of fun. Ahead of their gig at IRONWORKS on SUN 08 DEC, we caught up with the groups LARRY LOVE to shoot the breeze.
I Way back when you launched yourself as the First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine (UK) did you honestly feel youd still be going strong almost two decades later? Was there a plan for world domination? Our initial manifesto was ridiculous. We were mixing country and western with techno together with fake American accents at the height of Brit Pop, which was on some levels career suicide. On the other level, Im not sure were masters of the art but were increasingly nding that Nashville is going to Detroit for dance beats and Detroits going to Nashville and Alabama for blues. Our vision has remained true I While loads of bands have suffered in the internet age, you seem to have thrived with a massive online fan base. Why do you think what you do has such a global appeal? We anticipated the death of the music industry a long time ago. Were quite techno savvy in that sense and we welcome it. The record industry was a f***ing con anyway. The artists were getting 16% of what they were owed and the other 84% was going to the record labels. That was a totally incongruous and incompatible situation. Like any capitalist venture it becomes a victim of its own success I Youre always going to be particularly famous for providing the theme tune to The Sopranos. Has that made you every wise guys favourite acid house-meetscountry rock combo? Did you ever get to meet James Gandolni? Yes and yes! Theres that DJ Avicii. Hes just said hes invented the blend of house music with acid country house He went to Nashville where theyve got that whole Miley Cyrus crossover shit going on at the moment. Gangsters seem to like us! We met James a couple of times and were privileged to have been in his company. He was a good fella! He likes to party, probably what killed him Read full interview: whatsonhighlands.com

Xmas is coming, apparently

As with almost everything else this month, its all going Christmastastic, but December kicks off with something a little more sobering, if just as important in the form of the WORLD AIDS DAY COMMUNITY GATHERING on 01 DEC at INVERNESS CATHEDRAL. The event, which starts at 3.30pm is hosted by Waverley Care and features music from the Bun-sgoil Ghaidhlig Inbhir Nis School Choir, speakers from the local community and refreshments. Entry is free. Getting to the festive events, theres no better place to start that with DECK THE HALLS YULETIDE CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS a NADFAS lecture at Smithton Free Church on 05 DEC at 2pm by David Bostwick thatll bring you up to speed on all those things we take for granted like holly, ivy and Xmas trees. And if its a tree youre after, why not head along to INVEREWE GARDENS on SAT 14 DEC where you can help to remove unwanted Sitka spruce trees from Inverewes woodland, and as a reward for your efforts, take away a Christmas tree for free. Meet outside the visitor centre at 10am with your lumberjack head on. All you need now is the presents, so best get to DINGWALL & HIGHLAND AUCTION MART on SAT 07 DEC for the MACMILLAN HIGHLANDS CHRISTMAS CHARITY AUCTION. Raising funds for Northern Highland Communities, this is the biggest Christmas charity auction the area has seen in years with hundreds of amazing auction lots to bid for including VIP money cant buy items - the current list of lots can be seen at youreventscotland.com - more at macmillanauction.org.uk

So, a quick trip on XMAS EVE to AVIEMORE for the TRADITIONAL TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION through the town with Santa and his reindeer, Christmas carols, reworks, mince pies and mulled wine, then home to wrap presents and wonder who was supposed to be in charge of buying the turkey. Unsurprisingly a dearth of non-festive special events this month, but a couple worth your while are: MURDER AT THE FORT AND A HORRID MURDER IN RESOLIS, a talk by Neiliann McIntyre and Chris Rendell on MON 09 DEC at Seaforth Club Rooms, Fortrose and a Royal Scottish Geographical Society lecture by renowned climber DOUG SCOTT at HIGHLAND COUNCIL CHAMBER, again on MON 09 DEC. Hell be talking about SIGNIFICANT AND JOYOUS MOMENTS IN THE MOUNTAINS, none of which we imagine involve sorting out Christmas. Next year is ofcially Homecoming 2014, the event being launched on Hogmanay at 20.14pm (geddit?) over Inverness Castle. The Hogmanay celebrations themselves will commence in mid-afternoon with childrens event the WEE HOT HIGHLAND FLING (see KIDS p12 where you can also read about the Whin Park WINTER WONDERLAND) before Comedian CRAIG HILL takes to the stage at Northern Meeting Park Arena at 8.30pm to host a free four-hour show which will be headlined by THE RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS. Inverness based all-female band DOREC-A-BELLE have been given the honour of getting proceedings underway. Taking the crowd into 2014 will be multi-award winning folk-rock band SKERRYVORE. And you can get interactive with a comment system on the big screen. Send your New Year message to 07786 206955, keyword irhhf then your message. Or Tweet #irhhf . , Commercialism is of course rampant at this time of the year, but theres the opportunity to make buying things into something good with THE GIVING TREE in the EASTGATE CENTRE. Thanks to the Order Of St John, whove been running the initiative for over 20 years, this ensures that children in the Highlands and Islands under the supervision and/or care of various bodies including Social Work departments receive gifts at Xmas. Choose a card from the tree, buy an appropriate gift and it will be delivered on the big day. And you can feel a little bit better about yourself as you open your hundredth prezzie. Butcher Out
Judas. That was the rst reaction on learning that ICT manager TERRY BUTCHER had, along with MAURICE MALPAS, legged it to Hibs, despite the fact that Caley are in the cup semi-nals, second in the league and seemingly on the brink of real success. All forsaken for a mid-table team, albeit one with a far bigger budget. It remains a bafing decision, but perhaps Butcher sees it as a stepping stone to his long-avowed wish to take the helm at Ipswich or, in the shorter term maybe itll serve as the right sort of CV for him to be offered the Rangers job. And, disappointed as we are by his move, theres no denying that Butcher and Malpas have built something very special at ICT, hopefully sturdy enough of character not to fall apart as soon as they leave. And for that we have to offer genuine thanks. Just a shame that it had to end this way. With perfect timing, ROSS COUNTY host Hibs on Boxing Day with the home fans presumably not knowing whether to cheer or boo El Tel. Whatever, theyll be hoping to pick up much needed points from that and other home games against Kilmarnock (07 Dec) and Motherwell (14 Dec) to turn around a dreadful start to the season. ICT meanwhile will juggle trying to stop a mass exodus in the transfer window while having a go at consolidating their league position with home games against Aberdeen (21 Dec) and Celtic (29 Dec). Away from the footer theres lots more sporting activity to keep you occupied this month, with a couple of SANTA RUNS deserving of your attention, the rst being in INVERNESS on 01 DEC. Organised by WildHearts, its an increasingly popular xture in the calendar. Dress as Santa and run 5k along the River Ness and through Ness Islands, all while raising money for a good cause. The run starts at 1pm but arrive at the venue between 11.30am and 12.30pm on the day of the event to collect your Santa Suit. More details at wildheartsinaction.org/santarun If that gives you a taste for such things, head along to the AVIEMORE SANTA RUN on 21 DEC for a similar event, this time in aid of Disability Snowsport UK. All entrants receive a goody bag. For more details email fundraising@disabilitysnowsport.org.uk There are always plenty of hardy souls eager to take part in the LOSSIEMOUTH 10 MILE TURKEY TROT (08 DEC), so much so that places are limited to 300. If you fancy it see morayroadrunners.com Those with even stronger post-Xmas constitutions will be lining up for the BURGHEAD BOXING DAY SWIM which, if nothing else, will blast away any residual hangovers in time for Hogmanay. Burghead Harbour at 9am on 26 DEC is the place to be.

THEATRE
CABARET COMEDY DANCE DRAMA MUSICAL

Behind You. Ahead of you.

That most traditional of British theatrical experiences, the panto, unsurprisingly dominates this month, although with that unique Highland twist of not featuring off-duty soap stars, exsportsfolk or shamed politicians donning the tights, slapping their thighs and being urged to look behind you. Things are rather lower key here- if panto can ever be described as low key-but that doesnt stop the productions being hugely popular, with EDEN COURTs show always being the biggest attraction of all. This year theyre doing SLEEPING BEAUTY [1] (03 DEC05 JAN) and itll sell out as always, being such a huge part of almost every familys Xmas, so make sure you get your tickets as soon as possible. Another always popular show is that at FLORIANS and this year theyre putting on a production of CINDERELLA by Trevor Nicol, rst produced by The Florians in 1992. Theres the usual mixture of old and new jokes, and old and new songs, dances, and fun for all the family. It runs from FRI 06SAT 14 DEC, excluding Sundays . Evening performances start at 7:30pm. There are matines on both Saturdays at 2:30pm. Book on-line at NODA Box Ofce (nodaboxofce. co.uk/cinderella-ticket-400). NAIRN DRAMA CLUB meanwhile, are doing ALADDIN at the LITTLE THEATRE, NAIRN from 27 NOV14 DEC, but its already sold out so your only chance of getting along is by hunting out returns. The literally farcical nature of panto has much in common with the equally rumbustuous ALLO ALLO, the wildly successful and gently bawdy stage version of the popular TV show. A big hit when it last came here with many of the original stars from the telly, this time round its a version by EDEN COURTs creative department, following on from last years take on Fawlty Towers. Its on from 911 DEC and much hilarity based on French stereotypes and roguish Nazis will ensue. THE NIGHT OF SMALL MIRACLES [2] was announced too late for us to tell you about last month, but theres still just enough time for you to get along to this new word-based club night at IRONWORKS, opening on THU 28 NOV with poet MICHAEL PEDERSEN and novelist, poet, Guardian journo, photographer, the award-winning author SOPHIE COOKE. Future nights will feature readings / performances from the nest writers around and will also provide space for new writers to perform their work, get a sense of the stage and to gain experience of performing in an enjoyable and supportive environment. The organisers are on the lookout for local writers and performers who want to take part so for more details see emergents.co.uk More about this next month, but theres bound to be a rush for SCOTTISH BALLETS production of HANSEL AND GRETEL coming to EDEN COURT from 2225 JAN so get your tickets now. Accompanied throughout by live music and a specially commissioned soundscape from Lila Senior, the piece is completed by a magical, layered design by Miranda Melville. Turning the tables - quite literally!

Meet the Shue Table by &tradition
Looking more like a giant old fashioned painted wooden toy than a fully functioning piece of furniture, the Shue Table designed by Norwegian designer Mia Hamborg and produced by &tradition, makes use of that age old craft tradition of turning wood and gives it a throughly modern meaning. Don t let the playful colours and shapes fool you though, this is a seriously useful table it is intended as a exible piece of furniture that can serve many uses in the home. The building blocks can be combined to place the table top at dierent heights, making it user friendly for all ages. As these solid lacquered wood quality tables are made to order, you even get to decide the form and colours - such fun.

5 Tell-tale signs you are vitamin decient

In order for our bodies to function at full capacity it is vital that we feed it the right vitamins and nutrients. When our bodies are decient it rather helpfully gives us signs to let us know, so here are a few quick tips to understand what your body may be trying to tell you. Symptom no 1: Cracks at the corners of your mouth. Decient in : Iron, zinc, and B vitamins like Niacin (B3), Riboavin (B2), and B12. Remedy: Eat more salmon, tuna, eggs, marmite, sun-dried tomatoes, almonds, dried herbs & spices and lentils. Iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin C so up your intake of that too. Symptom No. 2: A red, scaly rash on your face (sometimes elsewhere); hair loss. Decient in: Biotin (B7), known as the hair vitamin. Remedy: Eat more cooked eggs - raw eggs should be avoided as a protein in them called avidin inhibits the body s ability to absorb B7. Symptom No. 3: Red or white acne like bumps, typically on cheeks, arms & thighs. Decient in: Essential fatty acids and vitamins A and D. Remedy: Cut down on saturated fat and trans fats, and increase healthy fats, like coconut oil. Add more salmon and sardines, nuts like walnuts and almonds, and seeds like ground ax, hemp, and chia. For vitamin A, pile on leafy greens and colourful veg like carrots, sweet potatoes, and red bell peppers. Symptom No. 4: Tingling, prickling, and numbness in hands, feet, or elsewhere. Decient in: B vitamins like folate (B9), B6, and B12. Remedy: Seek out spinach, asparagus, beets, beans (pinto, black, kidney, lima), eggs, octopus, mussels, clams, oysters, and poultry. Symptom No. 5: Severe muscle cramps in the form of stabbing pains in toes, calves, arches of feet, and backs of legs. Decient in: Magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Remedy: Eat more bananas, almonds, hazelnuts, cherries, apples, grapefruit, broccoli and dark leafy greens like kale and spinach. Given that Christmas is a time when you bring in some more unfamiliar food items, why not include some of these?

EATING OUT

The Beaufort Hotel

11 Culduthel Road, Inverness
Back in the day, many readers may have eaten at the Beaufort, drawn by the place s deserved reputation for providing great steaks. That was back when such accomplishments were something of a rarity up here, but of course things are dierent now and, with half a dozen places in town oering great beef, the Beaufort has become somewhat overshadowed by its competitors. Almost literally so, with Albert Roux s sublime Rocpool Reserve just over the road pretty much setting the benchmark for hospitality in the area, something that s had the knock on eect of making many of the other hotels around buck their ideas up. The Beaufort itself went through a period of denitely having seen better times, but it s been

smartened up with a bit of elegantly modern redecoration and has some of the friendliest sta around, meaning that it s again gaining a reputation as a great place to go, not just to stay, but also, for locals, to have a reliably good meal. And it certainly seems to be working. There are people eating even on a midweek lunchtime with the autumn weather lurching from downpour to hurricane to brief shaft of sunlight illuminating the gorgeous view of the Great Glen out of the front window. We re given the choice of eating in either the restaurant or the more informal bar area with the same menu covering both and opt for the latter, which proves to be a wise choice as our waitress is friendly, welcoming and seems genuinely pleased that we re eating there.

to reinvent what you might expect by having a little dollop of pt inserted in each shroom, an experiment that fails. Heat pt and it turns runny, making for a less than appealing taste sensation. The accompanying Piquant Sauce could well be just a mixture of ketchup and HP, but surprisingly it works rather well. My companion s rst course shows a lot more nesse.
