Published in InterAction 67, Spring 2009 Johanna Tesson finds out about the bodys electrical circuitry and how it may affect general well-being. The concept of the laying on of hands is nothing new and has been practised by healers from around the world for centuries. Bio energy healing is a modern method of energy-based healing, devised around studies into the bodys own magnetic field and applied by trained (although not medically trained) practitioners. Both hands-on and hands-off techniques are used and it is a non-invasive one-on-one therapy. The idea is to balance the human electromagnetic field, recreating natural harmony on a cellular level and wherever the body should need it. Michael Cohen of the Bioenergy Healing Clinic, describes the therapy as not a specific technique but a field of work which has a number of different modalities. The theory behind bio energy healing is based on external and internal electromagnetic currents. Both natural and man-made sources of electromagnetic currents exist in our environment, the most notable natural one being that of the earth itself. Man- made electromagnetic fields include: electric power and communication systems; commercial telephone and television satellites; new TV and FM stations; citizens-band radios and cellular telephones; military satellites and communication equipment; and microwave radiation. Other man-made chemical agents and bi-products in our home and larger environment such as pesticides, combustion fumes, tap water and packaging contribute towards the polluting effect on peoples natural electromagnetic balance. Bio energy healing recognises natural and man- made electro magnetic currents and other pollutants as having an effect on the human bodys own electrical circuitry. This in turn affects our cellular metabolism and our general well-being. I came across different names for describing what seems to be the same type of treatment bio energy, bio- flow, Rapha-Yad and BiAura are all treatments that work with the bodys energy system. The effectiveness of each varies depending on the approach, the experience and individual abilities of the practitioner and naturally the clients ability to work on that level and modality of treatment explains Michael. There is another therapy called Bio- Feedback which involves detecting physical stress response with electronic devises and helping the patient to identify and calm automatic and manual stress responses. It is more psychology based, using specifically designed diagnostic equipment. Bio energy does not involve any equipment; practitioners use only their trained eye to detect energy blockages, and do not involve counselling as part of the therapy.
In general, I would say that the holistic nature of the treatment appears to lend itself well to the complexity of M.E. Interestingly, Michael lists CFS/M.E. under emotional and psychological conditions. However, bio energy healing does not involve directly working on emotional problems, but rather claims its technique releases old memory patterns taking into account that the bodys physical and mental memory are often intertwined. Bio energy healing can enable the client to overcome their debilitating symptoms without having to address the cause on a cognitive level claims Michael. There is no revisiting the past, the people, feeding the issues with more energy or having to work out how to get through the issue. The shifts happen naturally. The treatment is tailored to the individual and how their symptoms resonate in their body.
Is it safe?
As always, caution must be taken when approaching any therapy that requires you to part with your money and it is always wise to check a practitioners credentials. Make sure they are at least affiliated with a large governing body or organisation, check with your doctor before you decide to go and keep him/her informed. Because there is so little official documentation on the subject of bio energy healing and ambiguity concerning the name, it can be hard to know exactly what it is you are signing up for. As with any complementary therapy, it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security, thinking it is gentle therefore harmless. Any form of healing must be properly administered, so make sure your practitioner has had the approved training. Having said that, bio energy healing is drug-free, non-invasive and designed to be a calming experience. It is a non- talking therapy, involving no psychological analysis.
