 POLICE arrested a suspected thief in hospital after he was struck by a truck he
was trying to steal. The alleged incident took place on Parkgate Road, Ledsham, in
the early hours of Thursday 13th August.

 STUDENTS in Ellesmere Port return to education this month at a new academy.

The new University of Chester, Church of England Academy, replaces Cheshire Oaks
High and Ellesmere Port Specialist School for the Performing Arts – although both
sites will remain open for some time.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has agreed in principle to the purchase of land
in the centre of the town as soon as sites become available and to a supplementary
capital estimate in excess of £1m to buy the land.

PUPILS from classes 1 & 2 at Capenhurst CE Primary School went to Beeston

Outdoor Centre for their residential. On the agenda this year was a walk to
Beeston Woods, where the children made woodland collages. They also visited
Beeston Castle and paid a trip to the ice cream farm.

France to raise money for Leukaemia Research.

Shell students support hospice

STUDENTS working at Shell’s Technology Centre Thornton raised over £600 by
washing around 80 employees’ vehicles to raise money for the Hospice of the Good
Shepherd.
This year’s group of placement students wanted to run a fundraising event for a
local charity before they moved on after their time with Shell. They decided on
running a “Thornton Charity Car Wash” and their selected charity was the Hospice of
the Good Shepherd.
Jane Davis of Shell External Affairs said: “I was delighted when the students
approached us with their idea and very happy to support their on-site event. We
would like to thank everybody who took part and contributed generously to a great
cause in our local community.”
Amanda Le Bretton, the hospice’s fundraising and marketing manager, said: “This

is a fantastic contribution from the students and we are extremely grateful to all of
them for giving their time and effort to raise funds for their local Hospice. Corporate
support plays a vital role in the ongoing provision of care to patients with an

Golden days for A Level students

AS The Whitby High School celebrates its golden anniversary there were cries of
delight and surprise as Year 13 students collected their A level results.
Headteacher Mrs Margaret Hughes said: “The school continues to be extremely
proud of the success of our young people and we are pleased to continue to provide
the very best in opportunities for the families of Ellesmere Port. Once again these
results reflect the hardwork and commitment of students and staff at the school.
We applaud their achievements and wish all our students continued success in the

Nicola Lloyd obtained 3 A grade passes in German, Politics, General Studies, a
grade B pass in History and a D grade in AS Mathematics.
Eve Phelan obtained 3 A grade passes in History, German, Politics and a grade B

Scouts prepared for 50th

anniversary celebrations
FIFTY years of Scouting will be celebrated in Great
Sutton this month.
On Saturday 19th September the 1st Great
Sutton Scout Group are inviting former Scouts and
leaders to join them at the event in Great Sutton
Village Hall, on Old Chester Road.
The event will be split into two sections during the day.
In the afternoon from 2-5pm, they will be displaying an array of nostalgic
photographs and memorabilia for all interested individuals to enjoy. A great deal
of history has been logged and restored and they hope that people will find it an
interesting walk down memory lane. Tents and uniforms are on display as well as a
campfire mock-up.
In the evening, from 7-11pm, the celebrations continue with an array of
entertainment, and a few words from special guests to highlight the Group’s
achievements, and to acknowledge the value and benefits that local scouting can
bring to so many peoples lives.

charge up to 545% APR on loans. one finance

The Guardian on 28th July, that some of its
customers have been charged annualised inter-
est rates of up to 545%! They reported profits
for the first 6 months of 2009 at £53.1mill, up 

3.5%.

This prompted the charity `Barnardo`s ` to call 
on the office of Fair Trading to to investigate 
the practices of lenders that `prey on the poor`. 

LATE SUMMER IN YOUR GARDEN

SEPTEMBER often provides a blaze of colour before autumn takes hold so if you like bright, bold
colours there is a wide range of flowers to choose from.
Shrubs such as Hibiscus syriacus also known as the tree hollyhock because of the shape of their
flowers, are hardy shrubs with flowers in white, pink and blue. They flower for weeks in autumn.
Perovskia Blue Spire is a small shrub with branches of tiny electric blue flowers. It likes a well-
drained soil in sun and provides colour well into autumn.
Bright, bold colours for a damp soil why not try Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm in yellow and
pair it with Lobelia cardinalis with its purple leaved foliage and red flowers. Heleniums come in
a range of red, yellow, orange and russet colours, are good for the back of a border and give
colour for a few weeks especially if dead-headed. Japanese anemones are great ground cover
with tall or shorter flowering stems in white or pink. They also flower for weeks, well into autumn.
Some delphiniums will flower again in September if their first flush of flowers were removed after
flowering.
You can dig up and split perennials in autumn and as the soil is still warm they should settle in
well before winter. Try to remember to plant daffodils in September (tulips can wait until October)
for flowering next year.
Lawn repairs can be carried out in September. If you have bare patches in the lawn or want to
sow a new lawn, September is a good time for sowing grass seed or laying turf. Scarify to remove
moss and apply a weed killer to control those tough perennial weeds.
Hedges can have their final trim of the year to leave them neat and tidy over winter.
Autumn ripening raspberries such as Autumn Bliss and blackberries will now be in season and
taste wonderful. Some early season apples will be ripening so if you want to grow your own
dessert apples, consider Egremont Russet, Fiesta, Katy or Greensleeves. They will be ready to
eat in September but will not keep for very long, so just pick them from the tree!

Woman dumped rubbish at beauty spot

has been fined and ordered
to pay costs totalling more
than £1000 after more than
one and a half tonnes of
rubbish was dumped at a
local beauty spot.

to show up at Chester and
Ellesmere Port Magistrates
Court on 10th August.
Bailey had, however,
appeared at an earlier
hearing in July when she
pleaded not guilty and
magistrates proceeded with
the case in her absence.
Although Bailey was not present at her home at the time of the offence the court
heard that young children were used to remove the waste in wheelie bins from 60
Ferguson Avenue to the site of the fly tipping at Rivacre Valley beauty spot.
Cheshire West and Chester Council was able to prove that the waste had come from
Bailey’s home address and that she had therefore breached her duty of care.
The court fined Bailey £200, £15 victim surcharge and awarded full costs to the
council of £888.80 making a total of £1103.80.

Care scheme set for council decision

PEOPLE in Great Sutton have had their say on plans for an over 60s centre.
Cheshire West and Chester Council is proposing to create an extra care housing
scheme on the site of the former Gorsthills Primary School, on Berry Drive.
The state-of-the-art development would provide purpose-built apartments within a
landscaped site with access to a 24-hour care team as well as a range of communal
facilities designed to promote health and well-being.
Plans showing the key design principles went on display at two public consultation
events last month.
Ellesmere Port is already home to one of Cheshire’s first extra care housing
schemes. Hollymere development opened at New Grosvenor Road in March 2009.
