 In Search of a Song
asks, ‘Who is the poet?’Our mentor, the late Rachel Lauer, director until her death of the Straus Thinkingand Learning Center at Pace University, wrote that, “Something will have to be done tochange the demeaning status of students, the irrelevant curriculum and the social isolationof students within the regular classroom. If we do not change these fundamentals,educability of students will not increase, nor will achievement. We’ll simply spend moreyears rearranging the same old pieces of a system no one is happy with.”Note to the readers: From the onset of this report we would like the reader tounderstand our philosophy and approach to teaching persons that have a disability. Mostparents love their special needs child with a fervor equal to what they feel about theirother children, siblings, and relatives. However, not all parents of children with adisability are comfortable in their role as parent, provider of therapy, or advocate. Theywould rather not have their family or child’s name made public. They don’t wish to be in

wenote a child’s name in celebration of their ability to share a moment through expressivewriting or graphic art.While some of the children with whom we worked are ‘special’ because theylearn differently and are considered persons with a disability others of our students aresuper bright, gifted even, and also have trouble in the classroom because a busy,overworked teacher can’t adapt his or her curriculum fast enough to hold the child’sinterest.It has been our practice since we began to publish NYC students in 1978 that inworking with and publishing students we do not single out the learners as special orgeneral education. We mention that the child attends x public school and is a secondgrader who produced a work in response to a classroom challenge. This book, ourcurriculum developed in part during the 2007-2008 school year, is a celebration of ourstudents’ success in creating expressive writing and graphic art. It is in the context of celebrating the learner’s art that we mention his or her name.This curriculum also affords appreciation to the value of animals in helping theirhuman companions articulate feelings through expressive writing, graphic art andperformance.It is our position as artists, teachers, parents, advocates, that all children flourishwhen afforded individualized education programs and adaptations. We understand thatthis is not easy and having helped draft many Individualized Education Programs weknow that planning, writing and implementing really effective teaching tools take moretime to create. To put it a little more precisely: Piaget was a designer and an observer. And there are many educators in his mould, who care about what people think and how they think it. I do understand the contrast between child and adult reactions/feedback: it's shown on page 11.

The last pages on Playing are great! I appreciate Barbara's generosity and stories.

I do like the way the children send you back to work harder and more wisely: there are examples throughout this book and your practice. It is hard to have the same challenge from adults and peers. (I do think Piaget was as much a poet as he was a scientist and educator, and I have read lots of post-Piagetian or neo-Piagetian constructions).

When I'm working with children I get immediate feedback (sometimes it makes me happy; sometimes they send me back to work harder and more wisely). It's rare to hear from an adult peer and to link my effort to Piaget is most humbling and I thank you.

Here is the "Movement" photograph on page 61. There is a dog and a man. The man makes the dog stop, and the dog moves forward.
