HONORING
River Legend Award:
Lifesaving Award:
President of Cargo Carriers, a business of Cargill Inc. and Senior Vice President of Grain & Oilseed Supply Chain North America, Mr. Rick Calhoun oversees Cargills barge and marine operations in North America. In 1992, the Cargill Grain Division appointed him Assistant Vice President. Later appointed Vice President, Rick assumed oversight of the North America Grains rail transportation and administrative areas in October 1998. Cargill Marine and Terminal named Rick Chairman of the Board in August 2000 and then President in June 2004. Cargill folded Cargill Marine and Terminal into the parent company in 2010 and Ricks title shifted to President, Cargo Carriers at that time. CAPTAIN Bryon Given PILOT Larry Potter CHIEF ENGINEER Nathan Pickles MATE Keith Foy SECOND MATE Nathan Massey DECKHAND Michael Suggs DECKHAND James White DECKHAND Wallace Ferguson COOK Linda Clayton TRIMMER Jarvise Shelton TRIMMER Bruce Nunnally DECKHAND Kyle Hardman (Deceased) On June 12, 2012, Jarvise Shelton, trimmer on the M/V Richard A. Baker, was prepping barges on the Mississippi River near St. Louis when he spotted a small fishing boat drifting 20 to 30 feet away. The fiberglass bass boat, holding three adults and two children, had lost power and was heading into a fleet of barges anchored in the middle of the river. Jarvise and his crewmate Kyle Hardman ran back to the towboat and launched a rubber Zodiac, reaching the fishing boat with only a dozen feet before collision. The stranded men did not catch the first line Shelton and Hardman threw, so the mariners got closer and tried again. The current pulled the nose of the Zodiac under, flipping the rubber boat and throwing the rescuers. Both men were sucked underwater. Jarvise grabbed a rope off the Zodiac and pulled himself up, but Kyle lost his life. All five members of the fishing boat survived. The US Coast Guard presented Jarvise Shelton and, posthumously, Kyle Hardman with the Gold Lifesaving Medal for bravery and self-sacrifice. The 24-karat gold medal, one of the oldest and rarest awards, has been issued fewer than 700 times since 1874.

The Commandant of the Coast Guard takes great pleasure in presenting the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award to the captains and crew of the Uninspected Towing Vessels RICHARD A. BAKER, for their assistance during the rescue of three adults and two young children on the afternoon of June 12, 2012. One crewmember, Kyle Hardman tragically lost his life during the rescue; the fact that all other victims survived uninjured is a testament to the courage, skill, and cooperative spirit of professional river men in the Western Rivers. Their unselfish actions and valiant service reflect great credit upon themselves and are in keeping with the highest traditions of humanitarian service.
