    The FAA prohibits the use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) on aircraft unless the airline has determined they will not interfere with aircraft systems. The FAA recommends prohibiting PED use below 10,000 feet during takeoff and landing. Airline policies generally divide PEDs into three categories - those never allowed, those always allowed, and those allowed at certain times. Scanners are included in the category of devices never allowed according to Southwest Airlines' policy. The airline, not the captain, has the final say over what electronic devices passengers can use.
