Anatomy & Physiology

An Introduction
Introduction
► Anatomy
 Anatomy derived from Greek words meaning
to cut (tomy) apart (ana).
 Anatomy (ah-nat’o-me) is the study of structure
and shape of the body and body parts and their
relationships to one another.
►Gross Anatomy (Heart, Bones)
►Microscopic Anatomy (Cells, tissues)
Introduction
► Physiology
 physio = nature, ology = the study of
 Physiology (fiz”e-ol’-je) is the study of how the
body and its parts work or function

► Many Branches e.g.

 Neuro physiology
 Cardiac physiology
Relationship between anatomy and
physiology
► Always an inter-relationship---?
► Parts of the body form a well organized
unit and each of those parts has a job to
do to make body operate as a whole.
► Structure determines what can be done.
► For example ????
► Lungs are not muscular Chamber like
heart so they cant pump blood but with
very thin sac walls can exchange gases
and provide O2 to body.
Level of Structural Organization
Level of Structural Organization
► Chemical Level (Atoms  Molecules)
► Cellular Level (Molecules  Cells)
► Tissue Level (Cells  Tissues)
► Organ Level (Tissue  Organ)
► Organ system level
 Organs together  Organ system
► Organism Level
 Organ Systems Together  Organism Level
