Kanchipuram
Kanchipuram, also known as Kanjeevaram or simply Kanchi, is an alluring small town located in the state of Tamil Nadu. Settled on the western river basin of the Palar river the city offers stunning scenic beauty. The city is home to a number of sacred Hindu temples and is often referred to as "City of Temples".
Considered as one of the most pious places among the seven sacred cities in India, Kanchipuram boasts of many beautiful temples that attract pilgrims to the place all through the year. The intricate architecture of the temples represent the rich culture and fine arts of south India. The charming natural beauty blended with the religious allure makes the city a sought after destinations for travelers. Kanchipuram is famed as the weaving center for the premium 'Kanjeevaram silk'. Kanchis temples showcase some of the best in Dravidian architecture, an amalgam of styles introduced by the citys many rulers over the centuries the Pallavas, Cholas, Vijayanagara kings and Nayaks. In between, the city also had to reckon with many invasions, when some of the stunning temples were used as garrisons. It was the British who introduced sericulture to Kanchipurams weaving community. The legendary Kanchivaram saris have since kept the citys name glowing like the shimmer of silk.

temple, the largest temple in the city of thousand temples. town. With a gopuram that seems to reach out to the heavens above and is one of the tallest in South India at 59 meters, Ekambareswarar literally translates to Lord of mango tree and the lore behind its origin is fascinating and enchanting as its hallway of thousand pillars or Aayiram Kaal Mandapam. Built by the Pallavas, remodelled by the Cholas and subsequently elaborated on by King Krishnadevaraya who led Vijayanagara empire to its glory, Ekambareswarar temple is one of the five Panch Bootha Sthalam or Shiva temples, representing the element of Earth. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the inner sanctum is where you can seek Lord Shivas blessing along with that of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. Adorning the main temples back is a Somaskanda iconography that represents Lord Shiva with Goddess Uma and Lord Skanda in the child form between them.
Shiva and Goddess Kamakshi is the mango tree or as it is referred to, Stala Vruksham from which the temple gets its name and believed to have divine powers of its own.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple's walls are replete with panels showing Nataraja, the Lord of Dance and an avatar of Shiva, in various postures. Called the Stone temple of Kachipettu, Kachipettu Periya Thirukatrali, by Rajaraja Chola, Kailasnath temple is believed to be the architectural inspiration behind Brihadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur.
Magnificent and stately without being imperious, Kailasnath temple is Kanchipuram's crowing glory in its hallmark understated elegance.

Enroute to Uthiramerur from the town of Kanchipuram lies yet another Shivasthalam, that of Thirumarugal. Glorious and ancient to its very core steeped in mythology, Thirumarugal was built by King Rajendra Chola and is believed to one of the oldest Shiva temples in India, its origins having traced far back to the 7th century. Since its foundation, the temple has been overlain with numerous legends and folklore, all testament to the belief in its holiness and sanctity. Its layout is in the traditional temple architectural plan typical to the temples of Kanchipuram and Shiva Sthalams. While the presiding deity of Thirumarugal is Lord Shiva, he is in his selfmanifested, swayambu, avatar at the temple. Also enshrined is Lord Murugan with an elephant as a vahan rather than the peacock that is his traditional vahan (vehicle). In fact Thirumarugal temple is the site where Lord Murugan slayed the demon Magaran.
