Meditation
EARLY WILL I SEEK THEE If you, little children, wish to be made holy, as God is holy, that God may have pleasure in seeing you, as olive plants trained up by the water courses, you must seek Christ, and wait on Him for his Spirit to sprinkle you with his peace-speaking and purifying blood. You have great need of being made holy, and it is difficult thing to be made holy. You know it is a difficult thing to break the hard flinty rock. Now, your hearts are compared in the Scripture to the adamant and to the nether mill-stone; and the more holy you become, the more you will feel the need of holiness. I will tell you what Mr. Newton, an excellent minister said, when reading the text, By the grace of God I am what I am He said, I am not what I ought to be. Ah! How imperfect and deficient! I am not what I wish to be; but I abhor what is evil, and I would cleave to that which is good. I am not what I hope to be; soon, soon I shall put off mortality; and with it all sin and imperfection. Yet, though I am not what I ought to be, nor what I wish to be, nor what I hope to be, I can truly say I am not what I once was---a slave of sin and Satan; I can heartily join with the apostle, and acknowledge, By the grace of God I am what I am. The only other blessing which I shall now mention, that you shall receive by seeking Christ, is eternal life in heaven. It is said in one of the psalms, The Lord is a sun and shield; he will give grace and glory. He gives grace here, in forgiving the sins of those who seek him, and, by the power of his grace, he subdues sin in the soul; and he will give glory hereafter, in bringing every one of those whom he pardons and purifies to heaven, to be ever in the presence and enjoying the favor of God. He is saying to you now, Come out from among them, and be separate, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. You know that Moses though adopted into the family of Pharaoh s daughter, and exalted to the honors of Pharaohs kingdom, preferred joining himself to the Lords people, and to suffer affection with them, than to enjoy all the treasures of Egypt, and all the pleasures of sin for a season, that he might have the dignity of being numbered among the children of God; and we read that he did so because he had respect to the recompense of the reward. Congregational Life
Today, Dr. Jerry Bilkes will conduct the worship services. This morning, the sacrament of Holy Baptism will be administered to Emma Grace, daughter of Tyler & Courtney Prince and to Parker John, son of Jordan & Betsy Timmer. Pastor David Murray is preaching in Monarch FRC today. There will be a sermon discussion in the Adult Sunday School after the morning service. While there, please also pick up your copy of Resisting Gossip: Winning the War of the Wagging Tongue, the book we will be studying over the next 10 weeks. Read chapter 1 before next Sunday's class. The cost of the book is $10 and should be put in the collection plate in an envelope marked "Resisting Gossip." The Sunday School classes (beginners 7th Grade) Psalter of the month is #404:1, 3. Next Sunday, Pastor G.R. Procee of Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk (CGK) in Middelharnis, The Netherlands, will lead our worship services, the Lord willing. The congregational website has been re-designed and we hope to keep it updated and refreshed with latest news, announcements, pictures, etc. Please check the website for late decisions about services that may be affected by the weather. The new website address is: http://www.frcgrandrapids.org The Deacons wish to thank the group of girls in the congregation for raising over $1,000 for Trent Timmer's medical treatment through their recent cookie drive. We commend these girls for their initiative, organization, energy and compassion, and pray that the money will be blessed by the Lord to help with Trents MS. The consistory recommends a new FRC publication, Our Reformed Order of Worship by Pastor C. Pronk, for your reading. This is an explanation for every part of our worship service. Copies can be found in the narthex and at the southeast exit. The Guatemala mission team covets your prayers for safety as we travel to and from Guatemala to work on the construction of a school and with the children. A group left Monday and another group left Friday. We all plan to return Saturday, January 25th. May God be glorified in all we do during this trip and may others see God's love in our actions.
