‘Fences’ – Treatment

This video is all about putting on a show for the cameras and the contrast between the media’s portrayal of an artist/band and
what really goes on behind closed doors.
Our primary target audience is late teens + (15-21), predominantly female, & tech-savvy.
Our video will be performance/concept-based, focussing on the duality of life in the public eye – a backstage pass into the
world of music.

“I'm sitting in a room

Made up of only big white walls…”
The video will start with a sequence of CUs of the band playing their instruments & the singer
tied to a chair, hands behind her back. The track begins, before the lyrics start (10 seconds in),
and there is a forward track in fast motion to a CU, at a slight HA, on the singer as she looks up
into the camera and starts singing. The lights turn on and the rest of the band is behind her in a
big white room. They are in an immaculate room and are rehearsing for their show. There will
be loads of CUs to show the band members’ expressionless faces.
“And it's obvious that you're dying, dying
Just living proof that the camera's lying…”
Bright flashes fill the screen and we see that the band have moved to a
different location - a run-down room, where they are actually now ‘on
stage’. Random MCUs will show that they are playing to an odd-
looking abstract audience – the paparazzi, almost. They have all had
costume changes – their clothes are ripped and their make-up is
messed up and their actions are completely OTT. We will also have
shots of the female singer shouting to herself in the mirror and writing
on it with lipstick.
There will be a lot of cross-cutting between both of the scenes to highlight the
differences between the performances and band members themselves.
“Yeah yeah you’re asking for it
With every breath that you’re breathing…”
During the bridge the two versions of the singer will both be on screen at the same
time facing each other, shouting the lyrics to each other.

The use of fast-paced editing and jumpy camera work will work effectively
during the instrumental (2:07-2:31), in which we envisage the band to be going
absolutely mental ‘on stage’. The girl will also be scribbling furiously all over
the mirror at this point, and just trashing things the hell up!
