Condenser

For the most economic heat exchanger, the aim is to fully utilize the allowable pressure drop. (Bill Watson, Chap. 4, pg. 12) Start most designs using the maximum allowable tube length since this will result in the most economic unit if a design is possible. Long and thin is sure to win; short and squat can cost a lot. (Bill Watson, Chap. 4, pg. 13) Condensing heat transfer coefficients are always higher for horizontal tubes than vertical tubes. (Bill Watson, Chap. 5, pg. 4) Therefore, horizontal shell orientation is recommended for condensation, provided space is sufficient to accommodate horizontal configuration. Provided there are no spec or vibration problem, rotated triangular pitch is recommended when designing the condenser. Rotated triangular pitch frequently gives higher heat transfer coefficients. (Bill Watson, Chap. 5, pg. 8)
