Set up your machine: Pre Printed Fabric

1. Thread your machine with water soluble thread. The bobbin

thread does not have to be water soluble.

2. Drop your feed dogs or tape a business card over the feed
dogs so they will not catch the material. If you have a
straight plate for your machine you could install it.

3. Put on your darning foot or free motion foot.

After you have prepared your quilt top:

1. Place a bit of batting on the back of your quilt where you Appliquéd Design
want extra stuffing. I used 2 pieces of thin batting, but you can use
thick batting. You will secure the batting initially with quilting adhesive spray. When you
put it over the design area, make sure that it is larger than the design. You will trim the
extra later.

2. On the front of your quilt, free motion around the edges of the design with water
soluble thread. It is not necessary to do any details in the middle now, just around the
edge.

3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 until all the dominant areas you wish to puff out are covered.
Cross hatching
4. On the back of your quilt, cut all the extra batting on the
outside of the dominant area. Caution: Take care not to cut
the quilt top.

Baste & Quilt

1. Build your front, batting, and backing sandwich. Baste the
quilt in a way that is easy for you to machine quilt easily. I
prefer to use basting spray so that my darning foot does not
get caught in pins or basting thread.
Lines
2. Quilt in the areas you wish to flatten so that the
Rays
dominant area will puff out. There is various ways to
quilt in the background; Stipple, cross hatch, rays, lines,
or you could develop your own method.

3. It is time to go back and free motion the details in the

dominant area. When you are going around objects that
are on a preprinted fabric or appliqué you should
consider the color of your thread. You may want to blend
it or contrast it.

4. After you have bound your quilt. You can rinse your quilt in the washing machine and
the water soluble thread will wash out.

helped the dominant area puff up and the de-
