Come join Professor Johnny Golding and the CFAR Researchers on a magical experiment into contemporary urban space. Jay Grifths A Love Letter From A Stray Moon, 6.15pm 7pm Jay Grifths will be talking about her short novel about revolutionary art, the view from the moon and losing and nding love. Making Magic Machines workshop, 4.30 5.30pm Artist and researcher Kristina Andersen shows you how to build hypothetical technological objects in accordance with your own desires and needs. Be inspired to treat technology as yet another material from which you can construct notions of the future. Kristina Andersen Hypothetical Technologies, 6.30pm 7.30pm In this talk Kristina Andersen shares her passion for using reclaimed materials and DIY electronics to create unusual objects and experiences. Kristina is the Founding Research Fellow of the Research Institute in the Converging Arts & Sciences at the University of Greenwich and is a researcher and storyteller at the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music in Amsterdam.

For the start of 2014, Selfridges becomes a portal into the creative mind, as we explore the power of imagination to drive the process of innovation and inform the shape of our future.

Designed by artist Beth Derbyshire, the Imaginarium at Selfridges Birmingham is a unique creative hub set in the heart of the store. Here imaginative workshops and inspiring talks are held in an intimate environment sealed away from the outside world.

The Imaginarium programme is curated by Beth Derbyshire and produced by Sophia Tarr in association with Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, School of Art and the Centre for Fine Art Research, Birmingham City University. The Imaginarium space was built by Urban Designer Matt Foster.

Talk 2:Imagining Transformation: Traces We Leave Behind by Artist, Sophie Hedderwick Talk 3: Life, Death and the Origin of Horology by Antiquarian Horologist, Rebecca Struthers Talk 4: But When is Painting a Painting? by Artist Jacqueline Taylor Talk 5: Immersive Theatres by Director of The Dome Club, Mario Di Maggio Fantastic Planet Film Programme Screening 1, 3.30pm 4.30pm Transforming the Imaginarium into a cinema, this playful selection of short lms for all ages will take you on a magic carpet ride across the globe. Curated by Flatpack Festival, Fantastic Planet gathers gems from Russia, Taiwan, Ireland and the USA. Total running time: 50mins (approx). Lucy Hawking Imagination: Extravagant Freaks and Great Cosmic Journeys, 6.30pm 7.30pm Lucy Hawking (daughter of Stephen Hawking) takes us on an extraordinary journey across the universe, touching on the work of the greatest scientists and explorers of our time.

FRIDAY 21 FEBRUARY
Fantastic Planet Film Programme Screening 8, 12 1pm Eighth in Flatpack Festivals screenings of imaginative, family-friendly world cinema. Total running time: 50mins (approx) James Yarker Theatre of The Future, 1pm 2pm James Yarker, Artistic Director of the highly inuential theatre company Stans Cafe, will conduct an intimate talk/performance in which he speculates about what theatre could look like in the future. Lauren Williams Who Can Dene Creativity?, 2pm 2.30pm Young Poet Laureate Lauren Williams will read a specially commissioned poem for the Imaginarium. The title of the poem is Who can Dene Creativity?. Lauren will also talk about her approach to poetry. Makey Makey workshop, 3.30pm 5pm This workshop by Birmingham City University is designed for people of all ages to develop new ideas and have some fun. Individuals will unlock their imagination by turning everyday objects into innovative devices. Making Magic Machines workshop, 5.30 6.30pm Artist and researcher Kristina Andersen shows you how to build hypothetical technological objects in accordance with your own desires and needs. Ian Emes Dreams Come True, 6.30pm 7.30pm BAFTA award-winning lmmaker and artist Ian Emess talk will reect on the process of unlocking the imagination, and how through his work and career he has made these imaginings real in different mediums.

FRIDAY 14 FEBRUARY
The Edible Garden by Edible Eastside, 12 8pm Explore the role of the garden as a space for deep-rooted innovation and investigation as well as sustenance and pleasure as nature enters the Imaginarium. Total running time: 50mins (approx) Birmingham School of Architecture, Birmingham City University Instruments of Perception, 3.30pm 5.00pm Interact with a range of extraordinary devices and structures created by students exploring the transformation of the Blythe Valley as the government deliberates the potential HS2 train line that will intersect the land. Touching Taste interactive food lecture, 6.30pm 7.30pm Caroline Hobkinson challenges the way we perceive food by presenting it as art. In this interactive lecture youll discover ways in which the sense of touch can be used to enhance your eating experience.

Icebreaker Kraftwerk Uncovered: A Future Past, 5.30pm 6.30pm Following their highly successful 14-date Apollo tour, Icebreaker is turning its focus on another contemporary icon: Kraftwerk. Composer, producer and sound-escapist J.Peter Schwalm highlights Kraftwerks genius while visual artists Sophie Celements and Toby Cornish show their new video work. The event will be in conversation with Ed McKeon, curator of Frontiers Festival.

Bright Sparks: Drop-in Workshop, 12pm 2pm Get creative with your family and friends as we invite playful artists of all ages to work together on their own imaginative pieces inspired by the city of Birmingham.
