CHAMBERof COMMERCE

FROM the PRESIDENT

As I reect on the Chambers past year, I am very proud of what was accomplished in 2013. Through staff changes, board changes, or just changes in the world, the Canandaigua Chamber has maintained our place as the go-to business organization for business growth and advocacy. We are able to do this through the ongoing support and engagement of our membership. The beginning of 2013 continued a transition at the chamber of new staff. I could not be happier with the Chamber team that has been in place since March. Fresh perspectives from Becky, Thomas and Kelly, mixed with the wisdom of Chamber experience from Elisha and I, have already proven to be helpful. Our Chamber team brings together complementary skill sets, knowledge, and expertise that enable us to serve our membership and the community at a very high level. With everyones inaugural year nearly complete, I expect great things from the team this year and into the future. An expanded focus on economic development continued in 2013 with the rst year of our contract for services with the City of Canandaigua. The Chamber staff and economic development committee has stayed extremely busy working on a variety of projects, beginning our business retention and expansion program, working with the Zoning and Code Enforcement Taskforce to create recommended changes in this area to the City, continuing to build relationships with important economic development stakeholders on both the local, regional and state levels, and building the database of available properties in Canandaigua for both sale and lease. One of our goals this year was to make the Chamber the go-to place for economic development. I feel very condent that we have done this and have begun to make the Chambers name synonymous with economic development. As you will read the Year in Review section of this report the Chamber held a number of very successful events in 2013. These events, whether big or small, serve as great opportunities for members to connect and build their business and community. At the end of this year, we were pleased to add a new benet to our membership. Online Chamber-U is now available through a partnership that we established with Coggno. Online learning is a growing trend and I am pleased we are able to provide this service to our members. Moving ahead into 2014, I am anticipating an even stronger focus on Economic Development. We will hopefully see the beginning of the North Shore Canandaigua project and possibly a couple of others. The Chamber will also be adding a part time Young Entrepreneurs Academy program coordinator. We believe strongly in this program that we started in the fall of 2012. This position will give the program the dedicated attention and time it needs to see it thrive. The staff will also be focusing its energy on membership retention, ensuring that our members are aware and are taking advantage of the benets that the Chamber provides. As always, we will also be looking to grow our membership with businesses looking to grow and engage in the Canandaigua community. Additionally, we will be giving our members new opportunities for advertising on the Chambers website. I would like to end by expressing my sincere thanks to our 2013 Chair, Floyd Rayburn, the Chamber Board and staff. It is through their hard work, time and dedication to the Chamber that 2013 was the successful year that it was! I look forward to working with our new board and the Chamber team to make 2014 another great year for the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce. Alison Grems, IOM President/CEO Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce

2013 CHAIRPERSON - FLOYD RAYBURN

It was an honor to serve as the Chairman of the Board of the Greater Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce for 2013. I had the pleasure of working with a very engaged board of directors along with Alison and her staff. 2013 was the rst year of a three year economic development contract the chamber has with the City of Canandaigua. Fifteen community minded leaders sit on our economic development committee. The people on this committee have met with very few cancellations every two weeks this year. Along with that, we set up a zoning and code enforcement task force to bring to light any road blocks there may be to businesses wanting to locate here. In 2013, we worked with over 20 different possible start-up businesses. We also set up a database that is on the chambers website of available properties for new businesses to start up and existing to expand. This database is also on the Greater Rochester Enterprises website. The chamber has continued to have a close working relationship with city staff, GRE, and the Ontario County IDA. Being a CHAMBER of COMMERCE, it only makes sense for the chamber to be a major economic driver for the area. This is becoming a national trend. This past June, we graduated our rst Young Entrepreneurial Academy Class. I had the pleasure of teaching seven young minds for 30 weeks with a lot of help from Alison and Elisha. This was an experience like no other. I think I learned as much from them as they did from me. It was a huge success and in November we started our 2nd YEA class. YEA sponsorships have increased over last year and we hope to continue that trend. All the chamber events were very well attended and revenue increased. The ATHENA dinner held at FLCC was the single most attended event in recent history with 403 attendees. We held the Anniversary Gala at The Inn on the Lake with the North Shore Project presentation, which was extremely well attended and very informative. At the business awards luncheon we had a walk down memory lane with Bruce Kennedy as he gave us a history lesson on Main Street, which was also well attended, and Bruce did a great job. It has been said that in business, you are only as good as your weakest link. This Chamber team has proven to be a very strong, positive, forward thinking one! Many accolades go out to Alison Grems, President/CEO; Thomas Lyon, Economic Development Specialist; Kelly Rotter, Administrative Assistant; Becky Simmons, Director of Membership and Visitor Services; and Elisha Snow, Communications & Events Coordinator. This year was Elishas 10 year anniversary at the chamber. It has also been said that youre only as good as the people you surround yourself with. I was very fortunate to have many people donate their time and effort as they too, want Canandaigua to be The Chosen Place. Thank you to all volunteers, Board members, committee members and staff. I now leave the Board Chairmanship in the very capable hands of Randy Farnsworth.

2014 CHAIRPERSON - RANDY FARNSWORTH

As we enter the New Year, 2014 begins with hope and expectations that this year will be one of continuous improvement. Through the dedicated efforts of the Chamber Board of Directors, the Chamber Staff, the Chamber Committee Members, the Chamber Volunteers, the Mayor, the City Manager, the City Council, the IDA, and many community leaders, 2013 was a year lled with focus, determination, and a revitalized commitment to excellence at your Chamber of Commerce. Unquestionably, New York State faces numerous challenges; both real and perceived. But the business owners and public ofcials of the Greater Canandaigua area realize that great expectations only lead to great results through the combined efforts of many moving in harmony towards common goals. That is our competitive advantage, that is the difference our community provides, that is why we look at every new challenge as an opportunity to prove Canandaigua is the Chosen Spot. We are blessed to have a strong regional health system in Thompson health, a UR: Strong Health Afliate, the Canandaigua Academy and surrounding school districts along with FLCC offering excellence at the primary and secondary level of education. Also, STC (Smart Systems Technology and Commercialization Center) a SUNY College of Nano-Science and Engineering, further offers us many opportunities for regional economic development. With the expansion of the Canandaigua Airport complete, Canandaigua is primed for positive growth. Finally, our contract with the city to perform economic development, the YEA program, the ATHENA Program, our special events and the ongoing service commitment to our membership will be the continued focus of our team. In closing, I want to thank Floyd Rayburn and the previous chairs that I have had the opportunity to work with: Bill Fuge, Russ Kenyon, and Jack Moran. Your hours of dedicated service and leadership along with Alisons team have provided the building blocks and core beliefs and values to expect more great accomplishments in 2014. To all our members, I hope you continue to join with us and help make the greater Canandaigua area a place to Make More Memories.
