Montpelier Locomotives Disarrange The Northwood Rangers On The Road

NORTHWOOD: February 15, 2014 The Montpelier Locomotives went on the road to take on the Northwood Rangers on February 15. The TAAC attack was not enough to untrack the NWOAL ambassador Locos on this evening as Nate McCord knocked down 15 points and Alex Matzinger added another 12 as Montpelier came home with a 51-37 win. Parker Houk dropped in 9 points for the Locomotives, with Dylan Snyder adding 4 points, Kyrin Schuman and Michael Blake 3 apiece, Jared Shoup and Dalton Surbey 2 points each, and Jacob Leung one point. Bulldogs Pile Onto The North Central Eagles On Homecoming

PIONEER: February 15, 2014 As Homecoming King Clayton Ferguson led his North Central Eagle teammates to the locker room to lace 'em up prior to the February 15 game against the Edgerton Bulldogs, no one could imagine what was coming at the opening tip. The theme for Homecoming Night, 'Fire and Ice', turned out to be more a prophecy than a mere theme. North Central came out brutally cold to supply the ice, and Edgerton couldn't miss, bringing a torch to the Homecoming celebration with a 60-27 blowout. The Bulldogs pitched an 18-0 shutout in the first period, and by the time the intermission rolled around, the Eagles were down 32-4...their worst offensive display in years. The barrage continued into the third when Ferguson led the Eagles back to life, but the second half efforts were more than countered by the Bulldogs that were still attempting threes into the fourth period. Ferguson led the Eagles with 11 points, while Jordan Reeves and Dylan Hutchison each had 5 points, and Brady Zuver, Jordan Bailey and Josh Roesner each had 2 points. By: Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER Pettisville 2/15/14The Pettisville Blackbirds and Wauseon Indians went to battle in their annual matchup. The schools are separated by a mere five miles, which has only added to the rivalry between the two schools throughout the years. This years renewal of that rivalry was won by the Indians, as the Tribe rolled to a 55-27 victory over the Blackbirds. Both squads were evenly matched through for the first half of the opening quarter, as at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter, Pettisville and Wauseon were tied at four points a piece. The Indians soon created a bit of separation, scoring seven straight points to go on top 136. It looked as if the Indians were going to stop Pettisville from scoring for the remainder of the first period, that was until Pettisville senior Austin Dykstra nailed a 15 footer with only five seconds remaining in the opening quarter to end the Blackbird scoring drought, and make the score 13-8 in favor of the Tribe at the end of the first stanza. The spark at the end of the first quarter gave Pettisville some momentum as the second period of play began. At the 6:26 mark of the second quarter, Blackbird junior Tate Kauffman drained a three point shot to bring Pettisville within two of the Tribe, 15-13. However, that Blackbird momentum would not last for very long, as in the final six minutes of the first half, Noah Castle and Kris Boysel would take over the contest, leading the Indians on a 15-2 run to end the first half of the contest. Castle racked up 14 points to lead all scorers in the first half. The Wauseon run put the Tribe quickly in control of the contest, leading 30-15

at the intermission. The Blackbirds looked to get themselves back in to contention as the second half opened up, but the vaunted Indian defense came alive in the third quarter, holding Pettisville to only four points in the third period. Boysel continued his hot streak, and was assisted by junior teammate Jacob Newlove who hit a three late in the quarter, helping the Indians grow their lead to 42-19 as the third quarter buzzer sounded. As the fourth quarter began, the Tribe was firmly in control. Pettisvilles Jacob Reyes was not going to go out without a fight, as the senior made sure to score his final points on the court he called home for four years. However it was not enough to chip away at the Wauseon lead, as the Tribe would go on to win by a score of 55-27. With the win, Wauseon moves to 15-5 on the season, and is 6-1 in NWOAL play. Pettisville falls to 11-10 on the year, and 7-2 in the BBC. For the Blackbirds, Dykstra led the way with ten points. Noah Miller and Eli King both scored four, Tate Kauffman put down three, Jeremy Mann, Jacob Reyes, and Korben Rychener all finished with two points. Castle set the pace for Wauseon with 14 points. Newlove contributed 11, Boysel scored 10, Zach Johnson tallied up six, Dillon Schantz and Zac Robinson both put up four, and Caleb Andrews PHOTOS BY MITCH PEEBLES, STAFF and Corry Byers rounded out the night GOTTA GET PAST ME FIRST ... Wauseon Indians Unfazed By Evergreen Slowdown Measures In NWOAL Win

WAUSEON: February 14, 2014 A slowdown offense has its good points, but if your defense cannot get your opposition to play along, it is all filed under the same category...moot. The Wauseon Indians were certainly in non-compliance with the Evergreen slo-mo offense as they jumped out to an early lead and built on it for four quarters on February 14, finishing the night and the Vikings with a 43-23 win.

Jacob Newlove finished with a gamehigh 13 points for the Tribe, who are still a part of the logjam at the top of the conference. Pettisville Defeats Stryker To Win Outright The 2013-14 BBC Championship

STRYKER: February 14, 2014 The Pettisville Blackbirds sealed the deal on another undisputed BBC championship on February 14, wresting it from the Fayette Eagles by means of a 38-35 defeat of the Stryker Panthers in The Cage. The win did not come easy for the Birds. Pettisville jumped out to an early lead, and built on it for an eight point advantage at the half. They held that lead until the fourth where the panthers mounted a late rally, only to have the clock cut them off three points short of the mark. Tate Kauffman led all scorers for the BBC Champion Blackbirds with 12 points, with Austin Dykstra getting 7. Josh Liechty and Jeremy Mann each had 5 points, Noah Miller and Korben Rychener had 4 points apiece, and Eli King put in a free throw. Dean Beamont landed 10 points for the Panthers, with Parker Ruffer getting 8 points, and Brannan Woolace 6. Tanner Clingaman fired off 5 points, Chad Ruffer 4, and Austin Grisier 2 points.

Locomotives Suffer Big Loss To NWOAL Foe Swanton

By: Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER SWANTON 2/14/14The 20132014 season did not end the way the Montpelier Locomotives wanted it to, as they suffered a 84-40 trouncing at the hands of NWOAL rival Swanton. The Bulldogs wasted little time taking complete control of the contest, as they jumped out to an 18 point lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Locos 24-6 in the opening quarter. Things did not get much better for Montpelier in the second period, as they again were outscored by a double digit margin, this time on the short end of a 26-7 deficit. At the break, the Bulldogs of Swanton led the Montpelier Locomotives by a convincing 50-13 margin. While the third quarter was not as lopsided as the first two had been, Montpelier was unable to keep the Bulldogs from pulling away even more than they already had. The Loco offense was able to score ten points in the third quarter,

All signs pointed to a likely Eagles' win, but like I said, The Hangar is not a place where visitors have an easy go of it. The 36-33 Fayette victory but gave up 19 on the defensive end, was one for the ages. ball was inbounded from Grant Schaffner to Chandler Sanford, a senior with track and cross country experience dating back to his junior high days. Turning around and coming back to the other side of the court, he was picked up by Edon's Brock Thiel who turned Sanford to the sideline. With the clock down to two seconds, Sanford, who had the pedal to the metal, ran the tightrope between River Wicker and the sideline, firing off a shot as he hit midcourt just prior to the buzzer. The ball grazed the back of the hoop...everything else was all net as the three-point prayer was answered. The explosion of the Fayette faithful was equally mirrored by the stunned silence of Bomber Nation. Sanford led all scorers with 15 points for Fayette, with Koby Biddix landing 8. Indians Bounce Elmwood In Non-Conference Action

By: Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER WAUSEON 2/8/14---The Wauseon Indians played host to non-conference foe Elmwood. It was the Indians stout defense that led the way to an easy victory as the Tribe would down the Royals of Elmwood by a final score of 60-28. It was a slow first quarter for both squads offenses. The Tribe would start off with a three pointer by senior Zac Robinson early on in the quarter, but would be unable to jump out to a big lead in the opening quarter, as at the end of the first quarter of action, the scoreboard read 9-5 in favor of Wauseon. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www.thevillagereporter.com) By: Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER PETTISVILLE 2/13/14The Pettisville Lady Blackbirds capped off their 2013-2014 regular season campaign in style, claiming their first 20 win season in program history, and winning their first outright BBC title since 2009 with a 38-26 victory over the Stryker Panthers. The Blackbirds would quickly take control of the contest, as in the first quarter of action, the Pettisville defense held Stryker to only two points, while scoring 11 points of their own to take a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers were able to slim the Blackbird lead in the second stanza, outscoring Pettisville 11-9 to make it a seven point game at halftime. The Blackbirds led 20-13 at the intermission. It would be a stalemate in the third quarter, with both teams scoring six points, making it 26-19 in favor of Pettisville at the end of three quarter of play. In the fourth and final period of action, Pettisville would start to pull away from the Panthers. The Blackbirds finished the contest by outscoring Stryker 12-7 in the fourth quarter, allowing them to grab the 38-26 victory, and claim the BBC Girls Basketball championship. Lauren Hostetler led the way for the Blackbirds with 18 points in the contest. Mikala Avina, Jordyn Pursel, and Audra Klopfenstein all contributed six to the Pettisville cause, and Dana Fricke rounded out the Blackbirds scoring with two. For the Panthers it was Conner Varner setting the pace with 11, Christine Huston scored seven, Ashley Haines had three, and Conner Sullivan and Gabrielle Paxton both finished with two points. Pettisville head coach Jason Waldvogel said after the contest It was a nice win against a quality team that is very well coached. I am happy for our seniors to finish their career on their home court with a win. Lauren Hostetler was great on both ends of the floor tonight. Audra Klopfenstein did a great job defending one of the better players in our league. Olivia Wright is another senior that works hard in practice and plays a big role in helping and supporting her teammates.

GOING TO THE BIG SHOW ... Wauseon's Jackson Sluder will advance to BGSU at 138 lbs. Sluder finished fourth at the BGSU North Sectional to advance. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www.thevillagereporter.com) By: Mark Mercer THE VILLAGE REPORTER BOWLING GREEN: February 15, 2014 The Wauseon Wrestling Team stood tall at the Stroh Arena on the BGSU Campus at the DII North Sectional on Saturday, February 15, finishing runner up in a field of 15, racking up 207.5 points. Nine individual wrestlers advanced to the district tourney, which will take place next Friday and Saturday at BGSU. Capturing individual championships on Saturday were Cameron Slattman at 126 pounds and teammate Wade Hodges at 132 lbs. Slattman completely outclassed the 126 lb weight bracket en route to his 2014 championship, recorded three pins in capturing the title. Wade Hodges was n a similar run in his first two matches, recording a 1st period pin at 1:48 and in his second match running away with a 14-0 shutout; however, in his final championship match, Hodges displayed why he will be the favorite heading into the district meet, toughing out a thrilling overtime 2-1 victory over Toledo Central Catholic's Nate Hagan. In what was perhaps the premier matchup of the Sectional finals, in the 170 lb weight class, 2013 State runner up Aaron Schuette (160 lb) and 2013 State runner up Seth Williams (152 lb) squared off with Williams making a crucial reversal as the clock hit zero to take a nail bitter 4-2. Also advancing to the 2014 DII District Meet for Wauseon will be Tre Campbell 160 lb (2nd), Andrew Bailey 106 lb (3rd), Alec Vonier 182 lb (3rd), Devon Jones 285 lb (3rd), Gage Campbell 120 lb (4th), Jackson Sluder 138 lb (4th).
