Data Logging in Heavy, Of-road Trucks — Application:
major manuacturer o industrial trucks needed to build a data loggerinto each vehicle in order to monitor a wide variety o systems within thevehicles. The application requires a compact, rugged, DC powered loggerthat could not only monitor the analog and digital inputs normally associatedwith data logging, but could also monitor and log inormation rom CAN-busdevices, RS-232 interaces and GPS position and velocity data. The loggeralso needs to be easily congured with dierent I/O congurations as manyvehicles have unique I/O requirements. The UEILogger is the perect solution. Not only does it provide the environ-mental (tested: -40° to +85°C), and physical ruggedness (50 g shock, 5 g vibra-tion) required, the ability to select the I/O conguration rom the wide varietyo analog, digital, counter/timer, Serial, CAN and GPS interaces ensures thelogger can be congured to exactly match the requirement o the particularvehicle.Another advantage o the UEILogger is its intuitive, easy-to-learn Windowsbased conguration application. As each application is somewhat dierentrom the others, each system requires a semi-custom data logging congura-tion. The ease o use o the UEILogger sotware dramatically reduces the timerequired to train the installing technicians.Once the data logging application is competed, data may be downloaded intwo ways, depending on the usage o the truck. Data rom trucks that returnto main garage is obtained by simply removing the SD card rom the logger, and copying the data into a PC or urther analysis and archiving. Trucks thatremain in the eld represented a dierent problem as it was prohibitivelyexpensive to retrieve the physical SD card ater each session. These vehicleswere outtted with CDMA-based high speed Cell Network interaces. At theend o the session, the data can be downloaded by any host computer withaccess to the internet. The UEILogger components used in the various systems include:

18-bit analog input boards are used or temperature andgeneral voltage measurements
4-port CAN-bus interace to log data rom various vehicle sen-sors and controllers.
8-channel counter timer boards are used as counters to moni-tor the quadrature encoder input signals.
4-port RS-232/422/485 to interace to a variety o RS-232devices installed in the cab as well as the DNA-GPS.
High perormance GPS receiver device providing < 3 meterposition accuracy (using WAAS) and 0.1 mph velocity data
24 point digital input boards are used to monitor limitswitches and relay contact states.
