AND THE MOTION PICTURE AND TELEVISION INDUSTRIES UNITE TO PRESENT ANTI-
PIRACY TELEVISION PROGRAM

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Court TV Anchor Vinnie Politan Discussed the
Importance of Protecting Intellectual Property with Los Angeles-Area High School Students
During a day long “Activate Your Mind: Protect Your Ideas” event at UCLA

New York, NY – – In its ongoing effort to educate the public on cutting-edge legal issues, Court
TV today held a special event at UCLA’s Bradley International Hall with U.S. Attorney General Alberto
Gonzales, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. and the
Screen Actors Guild.
In his first appearance before students since becoming the top law enforcement official in the
United States, Attorney General Gonzales addressed over 100 Los Angeles area high school students and
discussed the importance of promoting creativity in America, protecting creativity from theft, and the
impact copyright theft has on creative industries.
The program included students interacting with an FBI agent who specializes in intellectual
property theft investigations, a convicted intellectual property offender, and an actor and stunt man.
MPAA President and CEO Dan Glickman spoke to students about the enormous impact Internet piracy
has on the entertainment industry, and heard the students’ suggestions for resolving issues of illegal
downloading and trading of movies. Students then participated in “breakout sessions” and developed
their own ideas on ways to promote anti-piracy efforts by creating advertising campaigns and other
messages.
Court TV and the MPAA sponsored this multimedia educational event as part of Court TV’s
“Choices and Consequences” educational initiative and in partnership with the United States Department
of Justice’s Task Force on Intellectual Property. Court TV will produce a 30-minute television program
that will be broadcast on its cable network and distributed to high school classrooms throughout the
United States. Participants in the program and the national educational initiative also include:

 I-SAFE, Inc.
 Street Law, Inc.
The participating high schools, representing a diverse group of students drawn from the Los Angeles
area, include:
 Belmont High School, in Los Angeles;
 City Honors High School, in Inglewood;
 Mira Costa High School, in Manhattan Beach;
 New Roads High School, in Santa Monica.

determine the most effective resolutions to intellectual property piracy.”
The Activate Your Mind: Protect Your Ideas initiative was launched on October 20, 2004 as part
of the Department of Justice’s Task Force on Intellectual Property and its efforts to deter piracy through
prevention. The first event, held at the Great Hall at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.,
featured U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, and involved students, artists and law enforcement
officials.
UCLA and the City of Los Angeles took center stage today as the second Activate Your Mind:
Protect Your Ideas event occurred, focusing on movie and television piracy. Court TV anchor Vinnie
Politan hosted the event, which was a critical learning experience for all involved.
