Ko Thet explains that Thet Win Aung, and other high rchool students, became involved in the political movenent for two primary reasons. First, "they believed that ugh school students and university students are the same md wanted to re-form the student union" to encompass ioth groups. Second, "the Burma Socialist Program )arty (BSPP) government is unfair for the people," and hey wanted change for their friends and families. "The ~oup divided into three," and from March 1988 through: rune of that year, "One group encouraged the move-: nent inside the university compound. One group orga- i iized the students at their schools. One group handed] rut pamphlets and leaflets to the crowds,"says Ko Thet!! "

Thar Nyunt 00 describes him as, "more mature,"1

vhen he saw him again in 1995. Ko Thet eventUally)1 eft Burma to continue his political activity on the Thai- 3urma border and was reunited with Thet Win Aung vhen came to Thailand in 1996 to find more connections

nside Burma.

"He was very changed," Ko Thet says, "morel rrogressive," Thet Win Aung seemed more mature] .ellgious, and decisive. Ko Myo, like Ko Thet, als~ 'eports that Thet Win Aung seemed to be more mature.

Ko Myo says the high school students, "lovedfhe Thet

WinAung because he went against the headmaster (who) was given pressure by the MI to go against the students." He represented the students' and tried to resolve the differences by bringing the students concerns to a discussion between the headmaster and local township officials. The officials responded, saying, "If you (get) in politics, we can arrest you." To that, Thet Win Aung replied, "Alright, you can arrest me. But, we carmot avoid doing politics because this is the cause of the country."

When I saw the picture of Thet Win Aung on TV, his face was smiling," recalls Ko Myo, "So, I thought think that Thet Win Aung did not suffer from depression at that time, because the MI always took the picture(s) of the people while they were torturing (them). So, most of the students' faces on the TV were depressed. But not Thet Win Aung. His face was smiling - so, I think he can face torture, he can resist torture." Thar Nyunt 00 believes that he was healthy when he returned to Burma from the Thai-Burma border, and does not know of any preexistinr, conditions that might aggravate him further in prison.
