'or a list of new features in SPSS 12.0, see the What's New in SPSS 12.0? topic in the online help or the co(er letter that was included with &our s&stem. Reading new files in older versions - ,ecause of changes to the format of the SPSS document -..spo/ file, output documents created in SPSS 12.0 ma& not be readable b& earlier (ersions of SPSS.

USER E! and USER PR"# dro$$ed - SPSS for Windows no longer supports the 0S1# 213 and 0S1# P#$ s&nta4 commands. S$e%if&ing su'stitution fonts w(en %onverting !rue!&$e to PostS%ri$t in EPS e)$orts - When e4porting charts or maps from the SPSS 5iewer to 1ncapsulated PostScript -1PS/, one ma& choose an option to con(ert 3rue3&pe fonts to PostScript fonts. 6lthough the default beha(ior of this option is to match up a 3rue3&pe font with a PostScript font famil& for con(ersion, one can e4plicitl& specif& a substitution PostScript font in the I14+'ont.ini configuration file located in the SPSS installation director& -directions and samples included/. 3his feature ma& pro(e useful for users of multi"b&te te4t who require con(ersion to a specific PostScript font. En(an%ed *etafiles +E*,- %ro$$ed in Internet E)$lorer - SPSS 5iewer ob7ects e4ported as 1%'s are cropped when (iewed using Internet 14plorer. 8etscape cannot read the 1%' format. SPSS doesn.t wor/ wit( 0ltiris 1ision User *odule 2.1 - 3here is a memor& conflict with %icrosoft !irect!raw and SPSS when 6ltiris 5ision is installed using the 9#un before logon: option. In order to resol(e this problem

&ou must not install 6ltiris 5ision with this option " use ;6dd to startup menu; or ;#un manuall&; instead. <ou must uninstall and re"install 6ltiris 5ision if &ou alread& ha(e an installation using 9#un before logon: and are e4periencing problems.

3nown Pro'lems

ra$(i%s - 3he new SPSS 2raphics s&stem contains the following =nown problems)

!ata element st&le preferences cannot be sa(ed in a template. Point labels for some '6 3$#, P#$>S 6?, and 6?S 6? plots. Where the point represent (ariables in '6 3$#, P#$>S 6?, and 6?S 6? plots, the points are labeled with the (ariable name. In pre(ious (ersions, the points were labeled with the (ariable label.

0ninstalling Smart5iewer. If &ou ha(e SPSS for Windows and Smart5iewer installed on the same computer, uninstalling Smart5iewer ma& cause SPSS for Windows to stop displa&ing graphics. <ou can correct the problem b& repairing &our SPSS for Windows installation. In the Windows 6dd*#emo(e programs, locate SPSS 12.0 for Windows, press hange, and follow the prompts to repair the s&stem.

!e)t Im$ort Wi4ard and %(ara%ters - SPSS cannot process string (alues longer than 2@@ characters. ,efore &ou import the data, edit it to reduce the length of the strings. If &ou encounter a problem importing a (alue that contains a foreign character, edit the file and remo(e the character to fi4 the problem. SPSS #onne%t "56# drivers for S7L Server - 3he SPSS onnect $!, dri(er to use depends on the (ersion of SA? Ser(er at &our site. 0se the SPSS OE !.2 S"# Server Wire Protocol dri(er for SA? Ser(er (ersions B.4 and 2000. 0se the SPSS OE !.2 S"# Server with SA? Ser(er (ersion C.4 databases. 8ote that &ou can use the icroso$t S"# Server dri(er for SA? Ser(er (ersions C.4 and higher.

SPSS #onne%t "56# drivers8 dou'le-'&te and "ra%le - If &ou want to access data from an $racle database that has double"b&te characters, do not use the $racle Wire Protocol dri(er. Instead use the $racle dri(er. Save %an lose all %ases - 0nder rare conditions, SPSS can lose data when &ou sa(e a file. <ou ma& be able to wor= around the problem b& noting when SPSS issues warning that all cases ha(e been remo(ed. If &ou ha(enDt remo(ed all cases and &ou get that warning, please ta=e the following precaution, e(en if cases still appear in the !ata 1ditor. 14it SPSS without sa(ing the data file. Installation on 3orean Windows 9: - If &ou are prompted to reboot when &ou install SPSS for Windows on the Eorean (ersion of Windows FG, do not allow the s&stem to reboot automaticall&. Instead, choose 8o, and then shut down and restart the s&stem manuall& before &ou use SPSS for Windows. Swit%( "ut$ut Language - 3he Switch $utput ?anguage feature allows &ou to get output in (arious languages other than 1nglish. 3he translations included with this 1nglish installation are not final. Some items ma& still be in 1nglish, and some translations ma& change. 0pdated files will be a(ailable for download from the SPSS website at http)**www.spss.com*tech*downloads*. Windows 9: and $rinting - If &ouDre running Windows FG and &ou encounter a problem printing headers and footers in &our output, it ma& be due to the (ersion of a %icrosoft s&stem !??, the #ich 1dit ?ibrar& -riched32.dll/. If &ou encounter the problem, &ou can wor="around the problem b& replacing &our current riched32.dll with the (ersion that SPSS requires. 8ote that replacing a s&stem !?? can cause problems with other applications. 3o replace riched32.dll) Step 1. #ename the current riched32.dll. 'or e4ample, rename )HWindowsHS&stemHriched32.dll to )HWindowsHS&stemHriched32+new.dll. Step 2. op& the SPSS (ersion of riched32.dll from the SPSS installation director& to &our s&stem director&. 'or e4ample, cop& )HProgram 'ilesHSPSSHriched32.dll to )HWindowsHS&stemHriched32.dll. Step 3. #estart the computer. Step I. onfirm that the problem with SPSS is fi4ed. Step @. onfirm that other applications still wor= as e4pected. If &ou encountered this problem with SPSS, it is probabl& because &ou installed an application that uses a different (ersion of the !??. If &ou encounter a problem with another application, re(ert to &our original dll, or contact the application (endor or %icrosoft for a resolution. 8ote that an& time &ou install another application on &our computer, that application ma& replace riched32.dll, so &ou ma& need to repeat steps 1"@ to print headers and footers in SPSS output.

"*S wit( "*;L8 and "U!PU!SE! - When &ou use the $%S command to create output in the $>%? format, and &ou use $03P03S13 to route each output ob7ect to a separate file, the output will be well"formed but in(alid >%?. 3o wor= around the problem, use $%S *!1S3I863I$8 '$#%63J$>%? $03'I?1JDfile specD instead of $%S *!1S3I863I$8 '$#%63J$>%? $03P03S13Jspec. *ulti$le res$onse sets - 6lthough the $riginal 3ables module allows one to create multiple response sets which are used in the 36,?1S procedure, these sets can onl& be persisted in a s&stem file from an SPSS for Windows dialog. 3he new ustom 3ables module has a new dialog which ma=es use of a new s&nta4 command -%#S13S/ for creating multiple response sets. 6lthough the new mechanism offers some impro(ed functionalit&, there ma& be problems using a new multiple response set with the old $riginal 3ables module. Using data files saved in S0S formats in S0S <*P and t(e S0S 1iewer !ata files sa(ed in (arious S6S formats from SPSS should wor= in S6S. 3here are =nown problems using S6S files sa(ed in SPSS with the S6S 5iewer and S6S K%P @ " these applications ha(e a different mechanism for reading files which isnLt the same or as stable as the one used in S6S. ,ilename limitations for data files saved in S0S formats - 3he following e4cerpt is from the S6S K%P @ #16!%1) 9!ouble"b&te characters should not be used in filenames when writing S6S files Mfrom within K%PN. 3his is a limitation of the S6S local data pro(ider that is to be corrected in (ersion F of S6S:. 3his holds true for S6S files sa(ed in SPSS. Using data sets wit( a large num'er of %ases in t(e 5ata Editor - When data are read in to SPSS, memor& is allocated in the !ata 1ditor to accommodate all of the cases. If a (er& large data file -millions of cases/ is opened -e(en when connected to an SPSS Ser(er/ it is possible that the computer running SPSS for Windows will run out of (irtual memor&. 3he number of cases that can be held in memor& b& the !ata 1ditor can be limited b& a special setting 3his threshold can be set b& using the (irtualr.e4e utilit&, which is located in the SPSS installation director&. 3he default is to allocate memor& for up to 100,000 cases as needed. If a !ata 1ditor"specific operation is used to pass the threshold, such as scrolling to the end of a large file, memor& for all of the cases will be allocated. 3he threshold setting does not affect the abilit& to carr& out an& operations in SPSS for Windows, but it ma& affect performance with large datasets. <ou should not change the default unless &ou ha(e memor& e4haustion problems.

In that case, set a smaller (alue using 5irtual#. #a%(ing data - 3he !atabase WiOard and the 3e4t WiOard pro(ide an optional setting that automaticall& caches the data that the& import. ,& default caching is on and the wiOards create a cop& of the entire dataset. If &ou turn caching off, SPSS does not ha(e access to the entire data file "" the original data source is re"read as needed "" and the total number cases is un=nown. When the total number of cases is un=nown, %o to &ase, &o'(, and Paste do not wor= as e4pected in the !ata 1ditor. <ou can correct the problem b& turning caching on. Performan%e wit( wide files - If &our data file has man& columns, &ou can impro(e the performance of the graphical user interface b& setting &our 2eneral $ptions to a(oid displa&ing varia)le la)els in al'ha)etic order. Select $ptions from the 1dit menu, and go to the 2eneral tab to set options for *aria)le #ists. 3he other combinations of options perform well. C:\\LOCALS~1\Temp\spss####xxx.tmp contains an invalid path 3here is a defect in SPSS which manifests itself when one first starts SPSS after a fresh install and runs a procedure after ma=ing changes to the $ptions settings under the 1dit menu. 3his defect will not reappear after one closes down SPSS and restarts. Installing *ulti$le #o$ies of 0do'e 0%ro'at - It is highl& recommended that &ou onl& install one (ersion of 6dobe 6crobat on a computer. Some browsers might ha(e problems loading multiple plug"ins for multiple (ersions of 6crobat. If &ou wish to upgrade to the (ersion of 6crobat which is located on the SPSS !"#$%, please uninstall all other (ersions first. "ra%le and Se=ueLin/ Server - If &ou are using the Seque?in= Ser(er at &our site, it might not wor= correctl& with $racle G. 0se onnect $!, instead. onnect $!, is included in the SPSS !ata 6ccess Pac=. <a$anese %(ara%ters in 5ata 5ire%t driver setu$ - Kapanese characters cannot be specified in the !ata Source 8ame or !escription of the (ersion of !ata !irect database dri(ers which are shipped with SPSS 12.0. !ata !irect ac=nowledges that this is a problem, and plans to release a fi4.

Linear *i)ed *odels In the #andom dialog bo4 if the Include Intercept chec=bo4 is chec=ed but no factors or co(ariates are specified as random effects, the 8e4t button will not become a(ailable. 3herefore, in order to generate a #68!$% subcommand with no effect-s/ other

than an intercept, that subcommand must be the last one specified in the #andom dialog bo4. If there are multiple subcommands specified, the last of which contains onl& the intercept, that specification will not be generated unless ontinue is clic=ed while remaining at that last specification, unless that specification also includes a sub7ect combination. SPSS *a$s - 3he SPSS %ap $ption contains the following =nown problems or requirements) Running a networ/ installation of SPSS - 3he %ap $ption will not run from a networ= installation. If &ou need to run the map option, install SPSS on &our des=top computer. Limited num'er of ranges in Range of 1alues ma$ - If &ou sa(e an output file that contains a #ange of 5alues map that has more than fi(e ranges defined, &ou will not be able to reopen that file. 3herefore the limit on the number of ranges in the reate #ange of 5alues %ap dialog has been set to fi(e. <ou can create a #ange of 5alues map with more ranges using s&nta4 or b& editing the map, and &ou can cop& that map as a metafile into another application such as a word processorP but if &ou sa(e the SPSS output file containing such a map, &ou will be unable to open the file at all. 3he problem is in third"part& software. SPSS Inc. has not &et been able to obtain a fi4 from the software (endor, but will distribute a patch as soon as the fi4 becomes a(ailable. Range of 1alues ma$ %auses a$$li%ation error wit( Natural 6rea/ and no data - If &our data specification results in no data records for mapping, the 8atural ,rea= formula for determining ranges fails with an application error. 3his most commonl& happens if &our choice of a geoset or la&er within a geoset does not correspond to &our data. 6 mismatch table should be produced to indicate this problem, but the application error pre(ents it from being shown. #o$& "'>e%ts unavaila'le wit( ma$s - %aps are copied to other software as metafiles. op& $b7ects will not wor= correctl&. 6 side effect of this is that &ou must cop& and paste maps one at a time. 6ar %(art and $ie %(art ma$ t(eme si4e not restored - hanges &ou ma=e to the siOe of bar charts and pie charts in editing maps are not retained when the map is sa(ed and restored. 1aria'le to refine geogra$(i% mat%( %an %ause SPSS to (ang -

If &ou use both a geographic (ariable and a (ariable to refine the match, the resulting data table can e4ceed the capabilities of %aps and cause SPSS to hang. %ost significantl&, with 0nited States data, if &ou use ount& and State as &our geographic and refining (ariables and ha(e data for more than a few states, &ou will e4perience this problem. If &ou are using the (arious count&"le(el data files distributed with SPSS %aps, &ou can a(oid this problem b& specif&ing the @"digit 'IPS codes as &our geographic (ariable and no refining (ariable. 'IPS codes identif& counties uniquel&. 'or data containing state and count& (ariables but not 'IPS codes, a solution to add 'IPS codes to the data will be a(ailable on the SPSS web site. *a$s re=uire u$dated s&stem resour%es - If it has been a while since &ou added %icrosoft products to &our s&stem, &ou ma& ha(e outdated s&stem resource files. Installing Internet 14plorer I or @ -required for the SPSS Statistics oach/ will update those files. Error messages ma& a$$ear during install under N! - If &ou ha(e a (ersion of 83 I.0 that has not been updated recentl&, &ou ma& see messages during installation about failure of geoset installation. 3he SPSS installation replaces the s&stem resource file required for successful installation, which will ta=e place after &ou reboot &our machine at the end of the SPSS installation. <ou can safel& dismiss and ignore the warnings. *a$s does not use t(e ,IL!ER or WEI ?! %ommands - 3his could lead to misinterpreted results.
