Fast Food Nation Project Using Eric Schlossers Fast Food Nation as a source and a guide, investigate how

fast food affects a community and how teenage obesity is impacted. This project will provide an opportunity to synthesize valid sources, cite accurately using MLA format, and argue Who is to blame for teen obesity? after researching the effects of fast food. This is a group project where the following topics must be researched, explained, and synthesized into a cohesive, cogent report. There are two components that will convey the information gathered: a report and a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation. Topics to cover: 1. Where are the highest concentrations of fast food restaurants in Southern California? How many fast food chain restaurants exists in a mile radius of Hamilton High School? Compare this to two other local schools (elementary, middle, or university) and two schools out of state. Use Google Maps. Be sure to relate this information to Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of Fast Food Nation.

2. What is the average caloric intake for a healthy individual? Define healthy and how the average Hamilton student compares. Survey 30 students from Hamilton; 5 from each SLC: Music, Humanities, Global, MSM, BIT. Be sure to have students include their full names, year, and SLC. Use SurveyMonkey. Provide solutions recommended by the Surgeon General and compare them to two other sources of your choosing.

3. What is the average annual wage offered to employees at a typical fast food chain today and how does it relate to the average annual income of people in our community? How does this income difference impact food selection?

4. Research one item from LAUSDs menu and compare its nutritional and caloric values to a similar item from a local fast food chain. Explain how this information relates to the recommended diet of a healthy person. Finally, find the three most healthy options provided by LAUSD and compare those as well.

Overall, your task as a group is to address Dave Zinczenkos op-ed, Dont Blame the Eater. Be sure to use the topics above to challenge, attack or qualify Zinczenkos argument. Use MLA format and parenthetical citations for EVERYTHING.
