Title of Activity: Around The Clock

Number of Teams & Group Size: Minimum 3 people per group Maximum 7 people per group At least 2 teams

Logistics Needed: For each group: 1 x tubular nylon climbing webbing / rope / belt ~ 2 - 4 meters long

Time Allocated: 10 - 30 minutes

Goal: Rotate around the circle while keeping the groups feet in contact

Preparation & Set-Up: Ensure sufficient tubular nylon climbing webbing for all groups Make 1 knot in the tubular nylon climbing webbing / rope, if using a belt, simply clip it together, thus making a circle Distribute the tubular nylon climbing webbing to all groups

Directions for Conducting the Activity: 1. Ask groups to place the tubular nylon climbing webbing on the floor, ensuring it is in the shape of a circle. 2. Inform participants that they are to stand around the outside of the circle, with their feet facing the circle. 3. Ask participants to place each of their feet in contact with the feet of the persons on either side of them. 4. Tell participants that the circle is a clock. The person standing nearest the knot is to rotate around the clock, moving everyone else at the same time. 5. However, participants are to have their feet in contact with the persons on either side of them at all times.

6. Begin the activity, choosing which direction participants should rotate in, clockwise or anti-clockwise. 7. Once participants have completed the activity successfully, have them perform it again, this time in the opposite direction.

Specific Rules: 1. Participants start by standing around the perimeter of the circle / clock, with their feet facing inward. Each participants foot should be in contact with the persons feet on either side of them. 2. The person standing nearest the knot is to rotate around the circle / clock. (Facilitator to choose either clockwise direction, or anti-clockwise direction.) 3. While rotating, teams must have everyone keep their feet in contact at all times with the person on either side of them.

Variations: 1. Have participants keep their shoulders in contact instead. 2. If teams are having difficulty completing the activity, ask them to sit on the floor, and keep their feet in contact. Then get them to scoot around the circle instead.

Learning Points: Teamwork Coordination Perseverance Planning Problem Solving Lateral Thinking Integrity

Facilitator Notes: Ensure that participants have their feet in contact at all times while rotating. You may wish to introduce a penalty, if contact of their feet is broken, the whole team must start again. Check that the space around each group is free and clear of obstacles that may block their movement.
