MessagefromHisExcellency
theRightHonourableGovernorGeneraland
Commander-in-ChiefofCanadaDavidJohnston
I invite you to join Sharon and me in recognizing and in honouring those who have
served with such distinction and dedication in Afghanistan. Over the years, the
extraordinary strength, sense of duty and courage of our men and women in uniform
have touched us deeply. And let us not forget their loved ones at home, who made
sacrifces of their own throughout this difcult mission. On behalf of all Canadians, I
thank them all profusely, as commander-in-chief, as governor general and as a proud
Canadian.

Laureen and I join today in honouring the valour, strength and sacrifces of all those
who served in Afghanistan, including the more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces
members. We also thank the families that were their strength back home. Your
collective sacrifces are a worthy chapter in our countrys long and proud history of
fghting for a safer, better world for everyone. We are forever proud and grateful.

I would like to personally thank all Canadian Armed Forces members and their
families, as well as our civilian staf both at home and abroad, for their impeccable hard
work and commitment. Te Government takes great pride in the work of the CAF and
all that you have achieved in Afghanistan; accomplishments which have been earned
from great sacrifce. I believe I can speak for all Canadians when I say how immensely
proud we are of the work accomplished in Afghanistan as you continue to uphold
Canadas outstanding reputation on the international stage.

MessagefromtheChiefofDefenceStaf
GeneralTomasJ.Lawson
Canadian Armed Forces members leave Afghanistan confdent they have helped
Afghans to reclaim their country from terrorism and helped them to provide for
their own security. Te last chapter of our mission in Afghanistan is not yet written
and it will not be for us to write. Tat task will fall to the Afghans themselves. Our
experiences in Afghanistan, built over more than twelve years, have made us even
stronger and they have been woven into the very fabric of the Canadian Armed Forces.
We can look back on our contributions and achievements in Afghanistan with pride,
hard earned and dearly paid, and know that we have made a diference.
