COATING PROCEDURE

1. S C O P E
This procedure covers the minimum requirements of surface preparation and
protective coating , shall apply to shop and field protective coating.

3. GENERAL
$.1 Paint wor+s of all pipe, plate steel etc, shall ,e treated in according with
this procedure of which the paint manufacture-s instruction and data sheets
from apart. *ata sheet of painting must ,e descri,ed product data actual
painted to following . recommended use, physical content, application
details, surface preparation, application condition, safety / handling 0

$.2 &aterial handling and storage shall ,e done as follows :
$.2.1 Coating material shall ,e delivered in the manufacturer-s original
sealed containers ,earing legi,le la,els.
$.2.2 The sides of each containers shall have the following information
listed :

$.2.$ &aterials from damaged containers shall not ,e used in the wor+,
the containers of coatings or thinners shall not ,e opened unless
ready for immediate use. Paint materials shall ,e used ,efore the
e3piration of their shelf life.
$.$ 4nly specified coating system an a company accepted ,rands shown on
the coating system data sheets shall ,e used, unless alternates are approved
,y company in writing. &anufacturers direction shall ,e followed. #ach
multicoat system shall use materials from a single manufacturers unless
otherwise approved ,y company in writing.

$.) The application of coating materials is specified ,y ,oth dry film thic+ness
. *5T 0 range for each coat and the minimum total dry film thic+ness of
the system. The num,er of coats shall ,e the minimum num,er of coats to
achieve the required dry film thic+ness as recommended ,y paint
manufacturer.

$.8 "ll the applicator personnel shall ,e trained, competent and have
e3perience in ,lasting, coating application and inspection.
4. SURFACE PREPARATION
).1 9efore ,last cleaning performed, visi,le deposits of oil, grease, or
contaminants shall ,e removed ,y any of the methods specified in SSPC
SP 1 or other agreed upon methods ,y company.
).2 9efore ,last cleaning surface inspections such as weld spatter, ,urning
slag, sharp edges etc, should ,e removed in accordance with SSPCSP 2
and $. . hand tool and power tool cleaning 0.
).$ Surface shall ,e ,lasted in accordance with company spec.Chevron
&anual0.This category of surface preparation shall ,e applied for all
car,on steel and iron surfaces prior to priming.
).) "fter completion of ,last cleaning in any area traces of shot or grit and
dust shall ,e removed from the surfaces ,y clean dry and oil free
compressed air or vacuum cleaning.
).( 9lasted surfaces shall ,e chec+ed for cleanliness with visual
standard SSPC:%S1;equivalent Swedish Standard and anchor pattern
with <eane Tator Comparator or measured ,y press4film tape tester.
).8 9lasted surfaces meeting the specified surface preparation requirements
shall ,e painted with the specified first coat ; primer the same day as they
are ,lasted and ,efore any visi,le rusting, discoloration or other surface
contamination occurs.
).= ",rasive ,last cleaning shall ,e performed ,y e3perienced operators s with
approved equipment.
).> *ry a,rasive ,last cleaning is not permitted under any of following
condition :
).>.1 ?elative humidity greater than >(@ for e3ternal

5. COATING APPLICATION
(.1 Surfaces shall ,e clean, dust free and dry, any of oil, grease, or foreign
matters deposited on the surface after surface preparation shall ,e removed
,y solvent cleaning or using high pressure air ,low off prior to painting.
(.2 Bandling, mi3ing, thinning, application and curing of coating material
shall ,e performed in accordance with the coating manufacturers latest
pu,lished instructions and technical printed data sheets. The applicator
shall have copies of these data sheets.
(.$ "pplication of paint shall ,e applied ,y means of airless spray,
conventional spray, ,rush and roller may ,e used on all areas which cannot
,e properly spray coated for any reason. Company written approval is
required ,efore ,rush or roller application can ,e su,stituted for spray
application. Paint shall ,e wor+ into all crevices and corners, all runs or
sags shall ,e ,rushed out immediately.
(.) "ll coating done out doors ; open area shall ,e done in daylight hours and
,e completed at least one hour prior to sundown. %ndoors coating is
allowed 2) hours a day if the specified metal and air temperatures and
relative humidity requirements are met inside the ,uilding at all times
during cleaning, coating and curing.
(.( !o coating shall ,e applied under any of following conditions :
(.(.1 6hen relative humidity is a,ove the manufacturers written
recommendation.
(.(.2 6hen temperature of the metal is less than (5 or $C a,ove the
*ew point.
(.(.$ 6hen the am,ient temperature is ,elow (5 or $C without
company-s written approval.

(.8 "ll component shall ,e mechanically stirred ,efore coating for such time
as necessary to ensure that the pigment, vehicles and thinners are
thoroughly mi3ed. The mi3ed coating shall continuously stirred during
application ,y mechanical spray pot agitators or other approved means if
required ,y manufacturers or company. "ll mi3ing shall ,e done in clean
containers, free from traces of grease, or other coating or other
contaminants. "ll containers shall ,e +ept covered to prevent
contamination ,y dust, dirt, rain, etc.

(.= The coating manufacturers recommended pot life shall not ,e e3ceed, and
when this limit is reached, the spray pot must ,e emptied and cleaned, the
coating destroyed and new coating mi3ed.
(.> Coating shall ,e applied in not less then num,er of coats specified and
shall have individual coat dry film thic+ness not less than the minimum
thic+ness specified. "ll coating film thic+ness shall ,e chec+ed, strictly
adhered to and shall ,e free of pinholes, ,u,,les and other defects. 5ilm
thic+ness are to ,e measured with a wet film gauge during application.
5ilm thic+ness shall ,e verified, chec+ed and maintained during and after
each application of each individual coat. Thic+ness requirements shall ,e
met with each coat and if too thin, the total thic+ness shall not ,e C made
up C in any one coat %, e., another coat shall ,e applied. 6here film
thic+ness do not meet specification and ; or defects . holiday 0 are found,
corrective shall ,e ta+en.
(.A *ry film thic+ness shall ,e within the range recommended ,y the
Company or manufacturers
(.1' "ll coatings shall ,e allowed to dry thoroughly for at least the minimum
time recommended, considering temperature and humidity, ,efore
applying succeeding coats, 6hen ma3imum overcoat time is
recommended ,y the manufacturer, it shall ,e e3ceeded ,efore applying
the succeeding coat.

(.11 #ach coat . primer, intermediate coat.s0 and top coat 0 shall ,e inspected
,y Contractor;"pplicator and may ,e inspected ,y Company ,efore
applying further coats.
(.12 Prior to application of any coat, all damages to previous coats shall ,e
repair.
(.1$ Primer Coat
(.1$.1 9are surfaces shall ,e primed with one coat as indicated in
specification.
(.1$.2 Constrain associated with applying the prime coat are as follows :
" Prime coat shall ,e applied within ( hours of the star of ,last
cleaning.
The complete coat shall ,e free of defects .e, g., pinholes,
voids, ,u,,les, runs, sags0. *efective areas shall ,e repaired ,y
additional coating or removed and recoated.
Primed surfaces e3posed to polluted atmosphere shall ,e
scru,,ed with fresh water and dried prior to over coating.
6hen ,are metal is e3posed during the cleaning of previously
coated steel, a prime coat shall ,e applied to the e3posed areas
,efore proceeding with the application of the intermediate or
finish coat.

(.1).1 9efore applying Touch up and %ntermediate :

?emove salt, waste a,rasive, sand or other ,y high pressure air.
6hen recoating interval is e3ceeded, do roughening of the
surface ,y power tool clean or wire ,rushing ; sand papering.
(.1(.2 "ny of lower dry film thic+ness on each coat shall ,e respray to
specified thic+ness ,efore ne3t coat applied.
(.1(.$ "fter paint is applied, wet film thic+ness must ,e regularly chec+ed
in order to achieved the specified *ry 5ilm Thic+ness.
>.18.1 Steel pipe which have ,een 7ointed, shall ,e painted after the
7ointed surface have ,een cleaned ,y light ,lasting or wire ,rush.
>.18.1 %ntermediate painting shall ,e done after erection wor+ is
completed. Painting of ne3t coat shall ,e applied after 4wner
approval of preceding coat.
>.18.1 #ach coat of paint shall ,e allowed to dry for a minimum of certain
hours as per paint manufacturer-s recommendation.


8.15 Top Coats
>.18.1 Top coat shall consist of an undercoat and overcoat application of
coat to the prime coat the under coat shall ,e tinted slightly from
the over coat colour specified to provide a colour difference.
>.18.1 Top coat application and colour requirements shall ,e as follows :
#ach coat of coat shall ,e dry to the touch prior to application
of the ne3t coat.
Coat mi3ed shall ,e applied within the time limit specified ,y
the manufacturer.
The tinting material shall ,e compati,le with the coat system
and shall not ,e detrimental to its service life.
%f manufacturers ma3imum recoat times . recoat interval0 are

recommended ,y manufacturer and approved ,y Company.

The damaged parts caused ,y ,urns, welds, scratches, impact and so on
during assem,ly, handling, storage, shipping and erection, coating defects
such as loss of adhesion, ,listering, peeling, mudcrac+ing, runs and sags,
overspray, etc. must ,e rectified in accordance with repair procedure.

>.18.1 Coating material for touchup must ,e the same paint to ,efore.

6hen the coating is damaged down to the steel and spot touch
up is necessary, these areas shall ,e spot cleaned ,y ,lasting or
power tool.
"ll of the loose or damaged coating shall ,e removed C over
,last C shall ,e prevented ,y using shields, canvas or vacuum
,lasting equipment.
"fter the metal surfaces has ,een properly cleaned, the coated
areas around the repaired areas shall ,e feather edge. 5eather
edging shall ,e ,y power or hand sanding with sand paper.
The coating application in accordance with coating system.
8 INPECTION
8.15 Contractor shall perform all inspections necessary to assure that surface
preparation and coating application complies with the requirements of the
Company specification. The 6or+ shall ,e su,7ect to company inspection.
8.16 The indicated records shall ,e +ept daily and shall ,e su,mitted to company
daily again and again at the completion of the 7o,.
8.17 The inspection equipment shall ,e prepared as ,elow :
