ENTERTAINMENT NEWSPAPER
JUNE 21 4PM AT CUSHMAN FIELD
FEATURING VIKINGS LEGEND CHUCK FOREMAN
with Dylan Gott
Hello fellow Beeroisseurs1!
This articles topic will be Sierra Nevadas Pale
Ale. If you missed it from the last article about
Summits Extra Pale Ale, I am a very big propo-
nent of hops! That said I know that some folks
dont have quite the same affinity. Sierra Nevada
does an excellent job here; it is aptly named vis-
-vis the Extra Pale Ale. It has a very similar taste
to the EPA with significantly less bite. It is very
smooth, with a robust caramel color, and has a
light, crisp flavor on the tongue that does not
overpower the palate. These flavors are achieved
by Magnum and Perle bittering hops, and Cas-
cade finishing hops.2 I just enjoyed one this
evening while grilling some sirloins. Now this is
not the qualification of a chef, but I felt the two
paired very well.
The beer is named such, due to the high levels of
lightly-roasted pale malts; they typically have a
fairly equal malt-to-hop balance in the brewing
process.3 Sierra Nevada started this line in 1980,
and its been going strong since. This is worth a
try.
Rating:
3 of 5 beer bottles.
Until next time,

THE LUCENT DOSSIER EXPERIENCE
Press Release from LucentDossier.com, Interview By Mike Peterson
World-renowned, critically acclaimed Lucent Dossier, the live, electro dub performance experience
birthed in the heart of the LAs underground art and music scene. They have captured the love of their
diverse audiences creating a cult like following of fans that dress up and play along with the show.
From their explosive beginnings to performing, touring and/or sharing the stage with icons such as
the Black Eyed Peas, Motley Crue, Panic! at the Disco, The Flaming Lips, Cindy Lauper, David
Guetta, The Crystal Method, Christina Aguilera and more they continue to innovate what is possible
in the music scene.
They released their latest and heaviest musical production Gateway on December 21st, 2012. Lu-
cent Dossier (whose bigger shows, that include an interactive environment, are billed as Lucent
Dossier Experience) have been recognized as the underground pioneers of an artistic revolution
sweeping the globe.
Lucents unique fashion and their wild, completely innovative style of performance can be seen
woven in the hip cultural landscape that has enchanted the mainstream of America and the world.
Their other worldly staging is the perfect back drop for their orchestral musical stylings that are both
melodic and heavy. They blur the lines between many genres and make it looks fun and easy. In short
Lucent offers a permission slip to the crowd to get wild, let loose, play and express themselves.
For this their fans return over and over. Lucent Dossier has received recurring praise for their shows
at Coachella (8 years), the Grammy Celebration (3 years), and Electric Picnic Festival in Ireland (5
years). Their year long, SOLD-OUT weekly residency in LA brought them an almost cult like follow-
ing with fans lining up around the block to experience the ground breaking event. Superstars such as
Johnny Depp, Scarlett Johansson, Ringo Starr, Lindsay Lohan, Calvin Klein, Paris Hilton, Jessica
Biel and more arrived on a weekly basis. They have been featured on networks including BRAVO,
VH1, MTV, Telemundo, on shows such as Top Chef, The Kardashians, Paris Hiltons My New BFF,
SCREAM Awards and more and have been hired by Warner Brothers and Universal Studios, Holly-
wood.
They have spun magic performing for and/or with Dr. Dre, Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber), Nikki Sixx
(Motley Crue), Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit), Joe Walsh (The Eagles), Elon Musk (Tesla Motors,
SpaceX) and more. They have been photographed by Steven Meisel for VOGUE and praised in
SPIN, KERRANG!, Washington Post, NBC News, Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post and
more.
They have recently done a series of SOLD OUT headlining events at the oldest surviving Orpheum
theatre in America and newly renovated Palace Theater on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles and
an OVER SOLD run at the oldest surviving Vaudeville Theater in America, NYCs Liberty Theater in
Time Square. Their Private Party in series in downtown LA has SOLD OUT continuously over the
past year in LA. They are now ready to hit the road and spread their fun and love across America and
the world.
AFTER5: The Lucent Dossier show looks to be one incredibly eccentric
experience. How would you define the show, if at all?
LUCENT DOSSIER: "What if the dream was real, what if heart born desire
could explode out of of the imaginary and become the world we know
There is a secret hidden inside us all, a forgotten power left behind from an-
cient knowledge to fulfill the story of the future, slowly awakening each atom
of existence into a new plane of intelligence, until we are born again & anew,
bursting out of a skin unfit to hold our greatness so we can hold the wisdom
of forever, ruled by love, free of confines & mindless data, & challenged only
by the flourishing power of imagination.
Join the cutting edge, electro performance alchemists Lucent Dossier Experi-
ence as they soar again within the sacred journey into the beyond. After
months of gracing stages around the globe with sold out performances, the
critically acclaimed troupe are excited to come home and take a walk on the
wild side of this beautiful land, coming to you with a new show integrated
with live music, vibrating deep bass, inspired vocals, infectious dancing,
mesmerizing aerial & unexpected wacky personalities that will hold your
hand as you walk together through the portal to take a peek at what can be
when we discover the power of what we can do together..
A5: From what Ive read and seen, it comes off as a voice of this generation. Meaning in an
artistic way, you are sharing peoples hopes, dreams, fears. Would you agree with that state-
ment? And if so, how so?
LD: lucent dossier means a gathering of lights, of enlightened beings'. its what we thrive for. we are
sensitive to the world around us, we absorb energy & transform it. we are the misfits & the rebels, we
are the underdogs. we take the dream, dip it in the lucent madness golden pot & serve it to our audi-
ence not knowing exactly how we made it or what it tastes like.. the observer does the rest & be-
comes part of the feast, they show us what weve done, & often what weve done has changed their
perception, has changed their life.
A5: How did you get your start in the entertainment business, and how was the idea behind this
show conceived? It does seem to challenge and expand many boundaries of art as well.
LD: At first there was an unclaimed dream.. two amazing beings had dinner one night & in the midst
of conversation, as they were plotting ways to move the world, they found this long lost dream &
made it theirs.. dream rockwell (artistic director) & shrine on (artist & visionary) chewed this mad-
ness up some 10 years ago, all us kids heard the calling, some of us all the way from italy, brazil, ar-
gentina, australia.. we all followed our hearts till we found each other.. & here we are..
A5: What would you like people to walk away with following the show? For example, a deeper
perspective on life, being inspired with their own imagination, etc.?
LD: Stimulated, awake, touched, challenged.. enlightened..
The Lucent Dossier Experience is being brought to The Venue @The Hub in Fargo by Jade Presents-
Sunday, June 18th.
Ages are 18+. show begins at 8pm, with doors at

ART AND WINE WALK
ALL MONTH
Ah finally, summer has arrived. In what follows a cold month that may
be described best asMaytober, where even some green leaves had a
yellow hue (in May of all months!), temperatures have finally warmed
up, the Johnny Holmes shows are at Maple Lake, and countless boats
are finally seen on the lakes. I hope you will finally get the relaxation
you deserve after enduring endless cold, snow and wind.
GREATER GRAND FORKS FAIR
JUNE 25TH-29TH
This years fair promises to be particularily exciting featuring country star James Otto, enduro racing (junk cars racing until the last car is
running), River Cities Speedway racing, bears (yes, bears!), the Voice of the Forkscontest, Battle of the Bands, Cowboy Mounted
Shooting, all of the fun rides and so much more.
TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION
BEGINS JUNE 27 AT RIVER CINEMA
An automobile mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down the Autobots and Decepticons - and a paranoid govern-
ment official - on them. This is the fourth in the Transformers series, which does away with most of the actors from the past trilogy. Its
another Michael Bay production, and with that name brings all the explosions, crazy action sequences that his brand is known for. His
work typically is weak on actual story content, but hopefully this movie will be satisfying in more ways than one this time around.

Grand Forks has three lively theatres in the Empire Arts Center,
Chester Fritz Auditorium and Fire Hall Theatre. All three are
renowned for their creativity and large variety of shows and enter-
tainment. All three have very extensive and interesting histories.
We want to keep coverage on the theatre scene in town because
these places are a staple in our community.
So what's going on in June?

Who they are:Tom O'Neil - fiddle, guitar; Jeanne O'Neil - English
concertina, banjo, penny whistle, clogging, gigue; Erin O'Neil -
fiddle, clogging, gigue
The O'Neils celebrate a form of dance and music that has endured
for ages. Throughout the years, these tunes and dances continue to
be danced and played across the country. This art form has never
died out, simply because it belongs to the people. To join hands in
a circle and dance to music made by friends creates a sense of
unity that is a joy and delight.
Both Tom and Jeanne have been involved with folk music and
dance since their teens. They met in 1978, as members of the
Onion Creek Cloggers of Ames, Iowa. Since then, they have built
a life in which traditional music and dance plays a daily role.
Daughter Erin was born into this life in 1989. Now an important
member of the band, she began step-dancing at age five, and fid-
dling at age seven.
The O'Neils have been holding community dances, presenting
concerts, and performing since the 1980's. In 1986 they moved to
the Red River Valley and formed North Country Fiddle and
Dance. Their repertoire includes reels,
jigs, waltzes, hornpipes, demonstrations
of Appalachian clogging, and French-
Canadian gigue dancing. The O'Neils
can also provide music and instruction for
dance workshops and community dance
events.

JUNE 2014 YEAR SIX NUMBER SIX | AFTER5GF.COM PAGE 8 | /After5GF @After5GF
By Mike Peterson
Beginning in June, semi-pro football will make its debut in
Grand Forks with the Tri City North Stars. Tri City represents
Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and Crookston, from which
many of the players come from. While many semi-pro and even
professional teams have come and gone in Grand Forks (Grand
Forks Amerks hockey, Grand Forks Varmits baseball, to name a
few), this is the first go at football.
The Tri City North Stars are a member of the Midwest Pre-
miere Football League, which also includes the Brainerd Lum-
berjacks, North Shore Grizzlies (of Duluth), Minot Oilers,
Nebraska Lawdawgs, Bismarck Wolves, Idaho Phoenix and
Rapidcity Raptors. The group is being led by Owner and Head
Coach, James Kern of Brainerd, who previously ran the Brain-
erd squad.
The team has been preparing for its June 21st inagural game
against Rapid City since January and consists of a number of
players with college, semi-pro and pro experience. Some of the
Semi-pro all stars include running back/defensive back Wade
Steier(3 year MPFL all-star, 2 All-American Bowl games),
wide receiver Rara Jones (15 TDs in the MPFL, 2012 season),
wide reciever Alex Johnson (led MPFL with 10 touchdowns in
2013), offensive/defensive lineman Rhaheem White (5 year all-
star, MPFL), offensive/defensive lineman Nathan Foster, whos
participated in regional NFL combines, and DJ Elliot, whose
currently on the Bemidji Axemen roster.
While it is exciting that Grand Forks will finally have semi-pro
football, whats more exciting is the diversity and uniqueness
that makes up the group. Nobody is playing for money at this
level, but rather entirely, for the love of the game. And they
come from all over - from Alaska to Florida and in between.
Emerson Johnson is the teams Defensive Coordinator and hails
from Miami, Florida. Hes been with the US Air Force for four-
teen years.
Said Johnson, Semi pro is a chance to do what I love which is
coaching and being around positive people with one goal in
mind- win. I'm presently in the United States Air force witch I
have done for fourteen years so far. I love Grand Forks- nice
positive community and a great place to raise kids. This sum-
mer I'm looking forward to coaching football. With what I seen
so far I
believe the team will do well a lot athletes and understanding of
the game this team has that it factor which I believe will give us
a lot of victory. For me if I can just continue to coach maybe
take over one of the local high school as a head coach.
Quarterback Duane Aamot comes from Alaska. Hes played a
variety of positions, but carried on as quarterback since junior
year of high school. He played for Black Hills State, a semi-pro
team in Springfield, Oregon titled the Springfield Buzzards
until he landed in Mayville playing for the Comets. For him,
its a chance and another oppurtunity to play football, but also
to build a family with a group of men that share that passion
and also want to give back to the community and help younger
kids.
Roger Sackett, who plays offensive and defensive line, works
full-time at LM Windpower. His dad was in the military, which
resulted in him growing up in Maine and New Mexico. He
chose to play semi-pro football not only for his passion but also
to be part of a wonderful organization the community can come
and watch and enjoy. Him and his wife are expecting their first
child later this year (also has a stepson, 8) and his Catholic faith
is largely important.
Tracy Gayden, defensive back, hails from a small community
in Mississippi and also coaches wide recievers at NCTC. He
was the youngest of 10 children. Larry Davis, wide reciever,
comes from Cheraw, South Carolina and works at Dee, Inc. in
Crookston. He also has aspirations in his football career, to
hopefully play indoor football or perhaps a try-out with an NFL
team.
James Kern, head coach and mentioned earlier, will run the of-
fense. In college, he played for Minot State Beavers and has 46
coaching wins to his name, three league championships and has
every intension to make a top-notch organization the commu-
nity can get behind.
The stories and the people behind them come together to weave
the Tri City North Stars. Stiff competition is expected, but itll
shape up to be a very competitive and fun summer. The home
games take place at none other than Cushman Field on Satur-
day nights at 4PM.
Theres still time to join the organization as a player, coach,
sponsor. or assistant. The North Stars are also holding a Punt,
Pass and Kick competition for kids on June 14th at the Red
River H.S. practice fields.
As a few added suprises, Minnesota Vikings legend, Chuck
Foreman will be on hand to meet and greet with fans and sign
autographs. In recent years, he has been a big proponent of
semi-pro football. Hes made the Pro Bowl five times, was NFL
rookie of the year in 1973, and participated in the Super Bowl
three times.
An ATV from Revolutions Power Sports will aslo be given
away.
Any questions, comments or freedback, people can reach James
Kern at 218-831-1400.

RESTORING MEANING
By Stacey Dimmler
There seems to be a struggle between perceived expectations and
reality in the wake of social media.
America just celebrated Memorial Day, and people seem to have
different interpretations of what it means: a sign of summer, the
perfect time to fire up the grill, invite your friends over, and hope-
fully bask in the sun vs. a time to remember our Fallen Soldiers
and honor all those who gave and give so we could enjoy all of
the freedoms we have today. I see the same thing happening to
Thanksgiving (overeating, parades, and football vs. being Thank-
ful for lifes blessings), Christmas (presents, shopping, Elf on the
Shelf, Santa, parties, decorations vs. Jesus being the Reason for
the Season), Weddings (the perfect dress, over-the-top decora-
tions, showers and parties before the party, invitations, flowers,
pictures, food, music, attendants, schedules, presents, registries
and favors vs. Celebrating the Love that has brought 2 people to-
gether into a Lasting Union), Easter (dressing up, Easter Bunny,
candy, egg hunts, and more presents vs. Jesus dying for our sins
to Save us)* and even Birthdays (pinterest-worthy recipes, deco-
rations, and presents vs. Celebrating Life with loved ones).
Too many people are competing for the biggest and best _(insert
celebration here)_, but seriously- what is it all for?
When I was in 3rd grade, we loaded up our family suburban with
a bunch of friends and went to the Winnipeg waterslides and Old
Spaghetti Factory to celebrate my Birthday. Do you know what I
remember about that day? I remember the Border Patrol ripping
the heads off of my brand new Troll dolls, probably checking for
drugs. (If you dont know what Troll dolls were- Google it. They
were AWESOME!)
I cant even tell you what I got for Christmas last year but I do
remember all of the awesome family gatherings- just sitting
around and sharing stories and memories.
OK fine, I guess Ill admit that there are times I remember a
recipe or food from a holiday- like the almost-entire delicious
popcorn cake I consumed at Easter this year; but to be fair, Im
kind of obsessed with food sometimes.
Popcorn cake aside, my point is this: I think we can all do a better
job of restoring- maybe even discovering- meaning in our cele-
brations. Stripping away the expectations to out-do the neighbors
next door, to spend all of the money (or even more) than you
have, to win the perceived invisible trophy among human beings
for throwing the best celebration. Sometimes it stresses me out
just thinking about all of the thought, time, and planning that went
into some of the celebrations Ive attended.
Im challenging you in the next year: strive more for meaning
than the perceived societal expectations. Take note of the warm
fuzzies that come of just being with loved ones. Cut yourself
enough slack to enjoy a celebration rather than stress over a time-
line or making sure the perfect memory was made. Know that
youve done a wonderful job. Youre doing a wonderful job.
I recently heard a story from a mom who had pulled out all the
stops to give her daughter the BEST birthday party imaginable. A
few months later she asked her daughter what the best part of the
day was, to which the girl replied shopping for last-minute sup-
plies with you in the morning. I liked the us time.
Simplify what kind of memories are you making?
Will you join me in Just Being?
Full disclosure: Im a Christian and believe in God and Jesus, so
you may have other beliefs or celebrate other holidays. This is
just my story.

FISH AND BOAT FOR
FAMILY FUN
Family Features.com
There seems to be a struggle between perceived expectations and
reality in the wake of social media.
Fish and Boat for Family Fun
(Family Features) Rising temperatures and a break from school
make this time of year ideal for family getaways, and the nation's
parks and waterways provide a naturally refreshing escape with
recreation and activities the whole family can enjoy.
From boating and fishing to swimming and camping, vacations by
the water provide ample opportunities to experience a wide range
of pastimes against the backdrop of spectacular natural scenery.
Choosing your destination is a little easier this year thanks to Take
Me Fishing.org, which recently conducted a nationwide survey to
identify the Top 100 Family Friendly Places to Boat and Fish
across America.
Each of these top 10 locations has a public body of water within
an hour of a major city and is known to have good fishing oppor-
tunities:
1. Lake Berryessa, Napa Valley, Calif.
2. Bahia Honda State Park, Big Pine Key, Fla.
3. Skyway Fishing Pier State Park, St. Petersburg, Fla.
4. Everglades National Park, Homestead, Fla.
5. Kissimmee State Park, Lake Wales, Fla.
6. Galveston Island State Park, Galveston, Texas
7. Lake Chabot Regional Park, Castro Valley, Calif.
8. Blue Springs State Park, Orange City, Fla.
9. Table Rock State Park, Branson, Mo.
10. Presque Isle State Park, Erie, Pa.
Whether your travels take you to one of these destinations or one
of thousands of other lakes, rivers, streams or coastlines across
the country, prepare for a memorable getaway by planning ahead.
Put safety first. Sign youngsters up for swimming lessons before
your trip, and remember even kids with experience in the water
can benefit from a refresher. If you'll be boating, be sure to check
that life jackets are in good condition and rated appropriately for
the sizes and ages of intended users.
Pack smart. Days spent in or near reflective water can make skin
especially susceptible to burns, so be sure your suitcase includes
appropriate attire and plenty of sunscreen. Water shoes can also
make navigating rocky shorelines more safe and comfortable. If
you'll be indulging in activities such as fishing, bring along the
basics (rod and reel, tackle box, etc.) to save time and expense
once you arrive.
Comply and conserve. Not only does buying a fishing license and
registering your boat ensure you're in compliance with regula-
tions, doing so helps fund efforts to conserve natural waterways,
as well as improve boating access facilities such as docks and
boat ramps.
To get started planning your family getaway, visit www.TakeMe-
Fishing.org, which provides tools such as fishing reports, boat
ramps and hotspots, how-to information and a community for
those who are interested in everything from fly fishing to boat
maintenance.

BAKKEN MY DAYBy Taylor Brost
Very few people in this world can jump head first into any sort of change and immediately feel com-
fortable. The other day I threw away my favorite pair of boxers because they had enough holes in
them that they could no longer be described as boxers. How did they get to that point, you ask? Be-
cause that was my favorite pair and heaven forbid I was going to pick a new favorite. Change. Hate it.
My jeans are tighter than yours. Ive worn a flat brim baseball hat since I was in high school. I own
more pairs of shoes than I care to admit. But a month ago I traded all that in for FR (flame resistant)
Carhartts, a hard hat and steel toes. I traded my vintage downtown Minneapolis apartment for a
trailer in a small town, Cartwright, ND. No, small town isnt a good description at all. My trailer is
in a lot near another lot that has a post office, which apparently warranted township. I think of small
towns and I picture a bar and a church. My new town has neither. But I pray to God each night that
well get a bar.
I am doing HR and Safety work for a company called Interstate Industrial. It is located in western
North Dakota, in the Bakken territory. My degree was in Communication and Political Science. I
dont know a thing about human resources and I dont know a thing about safety on an oilrig. Here is
what I do know. I go to sleep at night looking at the big dipper. I wake up not smelling exhaust. And
all I need to do to gain the respect of the people who live in this land is keep my head down, work
hard, and prove Im willing to learn. If youre thinking about making the move, here are a few helpful
tips.
Sprint isnt a phone service out here. I may as well be using a stick to try and contact my mother. So
if you have Sprint and you are about to move, trade your phone. Trade it in for cash. Trade it for a dif-
ferent phone. Trade it for a pet rock. Give it to a homeless person. Thats how much your Sprint
phone is worth out here.
Dont bash the place in which the locals grew up. Dont you dare do it. To North Dakotans in this
area, Im a foreigner, and I moved here from Minnesota. People are moving here from all over, and
this state is trying its best to catch up to the increasing population. This boom seems to have come
overnight, but you cant rebuild a city overnight. Is Williston, ND the greatest place on Earth? Hardly.
But they have a Buffalo Wild Wings now, and if you ask me thats a step in the right direction.
My yearly earnings quadrupled, but that isnt enough to be happy. Yes, there is money to be had. Yes,
its that F you oilfield money youve heard about where Monopoly is no longer a game, but rather the
way you live your life. But if you move out here for that reason, youre never going to make it. Im
fortunate enough to have family around, and lots of it. My 93-year-old Grandma stole my heart, but
my ten-year-old cousin is making a strong case for it too. Ive also been fortunate enough to have a
few close friends nearby and to make new friends through mutual ones. But not everyone is that for-
tunate. Those people should get a dog.
Grin and grip. Welcome to the land of opportunity, where the president of an oil company could be
the guy bellied up at the bar sitting right next to you. I recently met an HSE (human safety environ-
ment) manager at another company, who offered to meet with me weekly and help develop and im-
plement a safety program within my company. Introduce yourself to everyone. A smile and a
handshake can go a long way.
Most importantly, embrace the change because its not just a change for you. The whole state of
North Dakota is experiencing change. Sit down and talk to anyone who has spent more than 10 years
in any of these cities and youll realize that the locals are experiencing change right alongside you. It
may be a different kind, but its happening for everyone.
Lastly, dont change. Not completely. The scenery might be different, sure. Some days I see more
cows than people. Tinder isnt an app anymore because no one is ever around me. But Im the same
person I was before I arrived. And Ill admit now that I lied earlier. I didnt throw away those boxers.
And Im going to ride off into the sunset one day wearing only those boxers. And there will be no one
to see me. No one but cows. And for that, I am grateful.

BLENDED - REVIEW
The most shocking revelation to come from the latest Adam San-
dler movie, "Blended," has nothing to do with any gross-out joke
or adolescent gag, nothing to do with projectile vomiting or messy
excrement or children behaving in wildly inappropriate ways in
the pursuit of a cheap laugh.
Rather, its the fact that "Blended" isnt completely terrible. I
mean, of course its terrible, but a certain level of care appears to
have been taken here compared to Sandlers many recent attempts
at "comedy."
The bar is just so low, people. Its just hovering there above the
ground.
Here is the main difference between "Blended" and his other out-
put over the past several years, slapped-together efforts like "Just
Go With It," "Jack and Jill," "Thats My Boy" and the "Grown
Ups" movies: Theres a vague sense of tonal consistency. Whereas
so many of his films are just unabashed raunchfests until the very
end, when they shoehorn in some false, gooey sentimentality,
there exists in "Blended" a genuine through-line of familial suffer-
ing and perseverance. A decent movie might actually be buried
here somewhere deep, deep down. The world will never know.
Another element that makes "Blended" tolerable is Sandlers easy
chemistry with Drew Barrymore, his co-star in 1998s "The Wed-
ding Singer" and 2004s "50 First Dates." After all these years,
Barrymore still has an unflappably sunny on-screen presence, and
she and Sandler banter with each other comfortably. ("Blended"
director Frank Coraci also directed them together in "The Wedding
Singer.") Again, the glimmers of possibility are evident, and they
are frustrating.
Essentially, though, this is yet another example of Sandler using
the excuse of making a movie to go on a lavish vacation with his
friends. In "Just Go With It," the characters visited Hawaii. In
"Jack and Jill," the escapades took place on a cruise ship. Here,
Sandler, Barrymore & Co. travel to the luxurious Sun City resort
in South Africa for a trip tailored to new families coming together.
We get no sense of what Africa (or Africans) are actually like; in-
stead, we see overly amorous, CGI rhinos cavorting to provide a
punch line.
How they all get to Africa is the result of a series of plot con-
trivances in the script from Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera. Barry-
more and Sandler have the opposite of a meet-cute over a terrible
blind date. Barrymores Lauren is the uptight, divorced mother of
two boys; Sandlers Jim is the schlumpy widower father of three
girls. They keep running into each other in their quiet, suburban
townand bickeringuntil they eventually end up at the same
African resort, sharing the same suites with all five of their kids.
What are the odds?!
Lauren is flummoxed by the chronic masturbating of her older
son, Brendan (Braxton Beckham), and the Little League tantrums
of her younger son, Tyler (Kyle Red Silverstein). Meanwhile, Jim
dresses all three of his daughters in choppy, pageboy haircuts and
warm-up suits courtesy of his employer, Dicks Sporting Goods, in
a bit of overly conspicuous product placement. Theres 15-year-
old basketball star Hilary (Bella Thorne), whos tired of being a
tomboy; middle daughter Espn (Emma Fuhrmann, who provides
the one genuinely poignant moment in the whole film), who was
named for the sports channel and who still talks to her deceased
mother; and the youngest, Lou (Alyvia Alyn Lind), who looks like
an angel but talks like the devil.
Is it possible that these boys are in need of a father figure and the
girls could use a little maternal guidance? Jim and Laurens
rolesand their potentialare obvious, but "Blended" has zero
faith in its audience and feels the need to spell out every single
development and emotion, right as theyre happening on screen in
front of us. Often this comes in the form of an omnipresent Greek
chorus of African singers, led by an overly caffeinated Terry
Crews and his impressive pectorals.
Wendi McLendon-Covey does the best she can to bring a shred of
unpredictability to her role as the obligatory, wisecracking best
friendalthough a crass, running bit in which she and Lauren are
mistaken for lesbians isnt even funny the first time. Similarly,
longtime Sandler friend and fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum
Kevin Nealon gets stuck in a flat, repetitive gag in which he and
his buxom and bubbly new wife (Jessica Lowe) make out with
each other incessantly.
And Sandler himself allows some of his dramatic instincts to shine
through in a few scenesthe kind that made his performances in
"Punch-Drunk Love" and "Funny People" so unexpected and wel-
come. Especially when hes dealing one-on-one with the kids
both the boys and the girlstheres a naturalism and (dare I say?)
even some substance thats so often lacking elsewhere.
That actor is in there, somewhere. Perhaps Sandler will actually
challenge himself again one of these days and set him free.
X-MEN: DAYS OF
FUTURE PAST - REVIEW
By Christy Lemeire for ChristyLemeire.com
The X-Men movies are, for the most part, a giant blur for me. I
know Ive seen them all theres got to be a good, solid half-
dozen of them at this point, right? and probably even enjoyed
myself from time to time. Last years The Wolverine, which es-
sentially functioned as a stand-alone film outside the X-Men
universe, was both thrilling and emotionally weighty.
But not being a comic-book aficionado, these movie adaptations
dont really matter to me. They provide no nostalgic allure. They
are, to borrow one of my kids favorite phrases, not my favorite.
And truly, such massive superhero fatigue has set in by now be-
tween all the various Batman and Superman and Avengers movies
that the prospect of spending two-plus hours with these mutants
inspired a shrug and a bit of
dread.
All of which is why X-
Men: Days of Future Past
is such a wonderful sur-
prise. Actually, its more
than that: Its a kick in the
ass. Director Bryan Singer
returns to the series he
launched with 2000s X-
Men and 2003s X2: X-
Men United with a sure
hand on both the relation-
ships between his characters
and the enormous set pieces
youd expect from a sum-
mer blockbuster. The results
are both dazzling and inti-
mate, clever and during
one tour-de-force sequence
spectacularly funny.
Yes, there are too many X-
Men. There are always too
many X-Men. And things
get especially crowded here
because Days of Future Past (which I keep wanting to call In
Through the Out Door) features the characters from the original
X-Men trilogy as well as their younger selves from 2011s First
Class. Plus, theres a bunch of other random mutants who get a
moment to show off whatever cool thing it is they can do for a
second or two during a massive battle. A superstar like Halle
Berry, for example, is a mere blip in her nearly dialogue-free per-
formance as Storm.
But the cast is so strong and so present, the actors bring great
meaning to their interactions with each other. James McAvoy and
Michael Fassbender have such a lively and fraught brotherhood as
former close friends Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X and
Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto that it lends a touching poignancy to the
later exchanges between the elder statesmen in those roles, Patrick
Stewart and Ian McKellen.
Days of Future Past is a time-travel movie, but its a time-travel
movie that actually works. The logic and logistics snap into place
and make sense, and at times theyre even mind-blowing. In great
and challenging ways, the film is reminiscent of Christopher
Nolans Inception: how it moves through layers of time and the
communication that takes place between those layers, with Ellen
Page serving as both conduit and guide. (Theres also the destruc-
tion of a football stadium during a major set piece, which calls to
mind Nolans The Dark Knight Rises. Singer and screenwriter
Simon Kinberg were feeling truly ambitious here, and it pays off.)
But it begins, as so many action extravaganzas do these days, in a
dystopian, post-apocalyptic future. Major world cities have be-
come bleak war zones overrun by giant, flying robots called Sen-
tinels, created to seek out and destroy all mutants. (One of the first
images Singer shows us is of corpses being dumped off the back
of a truck, in case youre considering bringing young kids to the
theatre). Professor X and Magneto team up to send Hugh Jack-
mans Wolverine back in time or at least send his consciousness
back in time, through the telepathic powers of Pages Kitty Pryde
to change history in 1973.
Wolverine was chosen because his self-healing ability makes him
the only one who could withstand such a journey. Plus, he looks
particularly groovy in the fashion of the time. The costume and
production design are beautifully evocative of the period without
veering into full-on parody. Jennifer Lawrence, as the shape-shift-
ing Raven/Mystique, may even have brought a few of her sexy
get-ups from the American Hustle set. (Lawrence, whos such a
juggernaut these days, doesnt get to do much beyond slink about
and kick butt in that unforgiving blue body paint, but shes a for-
midable sight to behold nonetheless.)
Speaking of Mystique, stopping her from doing something drastic
is the whole reason Wolverine goes back in time. But hell need
help from the younger versions of Charles and Erik, who are es-
tranged at this point and will require some coaxing, as their elder
versions acknowledge ruefully. This includes breaking Erik out of
a prison deep below the Pentagon (the reason hes there is very
amusing), which sets up the most imaginative, thrilling sequence
of the entire film. I wont spoil it for you Ill just say it involves
the mutant Quicksilver (a scene-stealing Evan Peters) and the
beautifully staged and edited manipulation of time. If nothing else,
see Days of Future Past for this segment alone.
Peter Dinklage also stands out as he always does with his reso-
nant voice and inspired choices as the scientist whose develop-
ment of the Sentinel program has the potential to eradicate
mutants once and for all. (We could have used more of Dinklage,
actually. He has such a compelling screen presence.) What this
means to us as viewers metaphorically, historically is crystal
clear without being didactic or heavy-handed.
Like everything that preceded it in the X-Men series, Days of
Future Past is about the marginalized and the disenfranchised and
the sense of unity that binds and strengthens them. But, being an
effects-laden summer blockbuster, it also has to unify the various
people who like to eat popcorn in the dark. It morphs between
both of these modes seamlessly.
