hink of the Statue of Liberty. The Washington Monument. Lincoln Memorial. And immediately the first adjective that comes to your mind is HUGE. Thus, the definition of Colosuss, which also happens to be the name of this band: a person or thing of enormous size, importance or ability; something likened to a huge statue. Colossus, a hardcore/metal band from beautiful Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is coming to Grand Forks on October 14th with some solid local acts. If I could choose one word to describe this group, whose credentials include Lifelight Festival and Sonshine Festival, it would be well, COLOSUSS because their music is larger than life and on a similar caliber to Fargos These Hearts and The Suit. While their music is straight out rock to the max, their lyrics could not be more epic and sincerely describe the ultra-intense battle of what it

means to stay on the straight-and-narrow. Their songs paint out a rebellion, a rejection of the lies spewed out from below. From their song Enigma: I'm done chasing the sunset, the sun sets on my back tonight. I'm never looking back, I'm never giving up without a fight. It's time for me, to become the man I'm supposed to be. It's time for me to get back,

3-6pm Monday-Friday

to get back, on my feet. Sick of this life I lead. Sick of pretending I'm someone I'm not, I dont regret a thing, I don't believe in luck so let's stop to say enoughs enough. I was able to catch up with COLOSSUS and get their take on things. A5: How did you guys come together and how long have you been a group? C: We came together from two old bands we all were in breaking up and we kinda formed one band with members of each, and we have been a band since May 2010 A5: What is your band all about as well as the style? C: Colossus is all about the gospel and helping people with there struggles in life; our style we are going for is kind of a mix of Hardcore/Djent/Metal. A5: What are your influences? C: Our influences are Christ, Family, Friends, Life experiences and various

hombus Guys Pizza has been around Grand Forks for five years in which theyve established themselves as having the Best Pizza in Grand Forks. Using almost strictly local ingredients, a Rhombus pizza is one of a kind. They specialize in the obscure while mastering the old favorites. Rhombus Guys Pizza is unique and because of that, they continue to expand. A couple years ago, Matt Winjum and Arron Hendricks opened up rooftop seating in their Grand Forks location and quickly established a nice music scene. Theyve also utilized the rooftop to show movies using a projector. Now, with this fall being so warm, the guys have been showing Monday Night Football games on the roof. Another change in Grand Forks has been the menu. Rhombus Guys has added new pizzas and appetizers. Some of the new pizzas on their are the Jonny Wasabi (the pizza on the cover), Happy Pig, and the Louisiana Saturday Night. The Jonny Wasabi which has been a real popular hit. Its named after a cook in our kitchen named Jon. What we like to do throughout the year is encourage these guys to be creative and come up pizza ideas and well put them up on the specials board for like a month and if it takes off and people really like it then we have a ceremony where cook gets menued and the cook gets to name it, Matt Winjum, co-owner of Rhombus Guys said. The Jonny Wasabi consists of a teriyaki sauce for the base then topped with chicken, onion, green pepper, red pepper, pepperoncini, peanuts, cheese and a wasabi drizzle. It might sound weird, especially with the peanuts, but I tried it and it was great, a pleasant surprise. Another new pizza is the Happy Pig which has honey bbq sauce, pulled pork, onion, red pepper, pepperoncini and pineapple.

The Louisiana Saturday Night is a cajun pizza with cajun marinara, shrimp, sausage, red pepper, pepperoncini, and caramelized onions. People should really come down and check out some of our new pizzas. All of the old ones are there, but now we have even more choices, Winjum said. Probably the biggest change for Matt and Aaron has been the recent opening of another restaurant in Fargo. Similar in size to the Grand Forks restaurant, Matt and Aaron hoped to create a similar feel to the one in Grand Forks. The downtown in Fargo had a similar feel to the downtown we have in Grand Forks and our business culture fits well in the downtown feel, Matt said. We really fell in love with the downtown Fargo. Another reason for the new opening was that Rhombus Guys already had a reputation in Fargo from the people who have visited the Grand Forks place. Plus, as a beer and pizza joint, a big college atmosphere is key and Fargo has plenty of that with NDSU, MSUM and Concordia all located in the Fargo-Moorhead area. We tried as best we can to have the same feel. So we have a narrow building thats long and has high ceilings, however its not as narrow. So for Rhombus goers the place feels like a gymnasium, it feels a lot more spacious, Winjum said. Their new building is newer looking on the inside. Its not as rustic and about five feet wider than the one in Grand Forks. Both places will have the same menu, so

if youre heading to Fargo soon, you can still get a taste of Grand Forks. With what seems like a constant competition between Fargo and Grand Forks, you can bet there will be competition within these two establishments as well. It will be interesting to see how the two kitchen compete with putting new stuff on the menu in the future. It will be interesting to watch and see how the guys try to out do each other for new pizzas, said Winjum. Right now, there is no Bison or Sioux pizza, but Matt isnt ruling it out just yet. Matt also expects that the Fargo location will add a rooftop this spring and might even dabble in making their own beers. They might even make a Bison Beer and a Sioux Brew and see which sells more. All the regular events will go on in Fargo, trivia night, foosball tournaments and concerts. You can look them up on facebook to get all the up to date information on both locations. Coming up on October 7 in Fargo, Rhombus Guys will have the band O Fosho playing at 9 PM and on October 8 they will be a part of the Oktoberfest Pub Crawl. Also on the October 7 will be a firkin which is an old style keg that will sit on the bar and you have to pound the keg into it and drink it from there. People should really come down that weekend from Grand Forks and check us out, added Winjum. For more information on Rhombus Guys, including a full menu, visit www.rhombuspizza.com.

I cant even understand commercials on television anymore. Perhaps its just me getting old (Im only 26 by the way) and finally beginning to be on the losing end of a generational gap. But seriously those commercials where they build a third of a full sentence on one screen, then add onto it word-by-word from there is downright confusing and way too fast. Even children cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants have plots that make you feel like youve been drinking the past five hours and dont have a clue to whats actually going on. Everythings got to be faster, and instant. Forget comprehending, just give me the product now and Ill figure it out later. Despite my passionate pleas for the world to slow down; I know it wont. However, we as people can. And it couldnt ring truer in my ears in regards to relationships. I long to see a day where relationships return to the old-school, classical version. Because what we see today is a version so warped and so disoriented from the real thing. Yes, dating today consists of, well, several aspects, but one of them being going online and clicking hot or not based on the subjects photograph. And of course our warped culture and media endorses superficiality and ultra sexually-charged themes 24/7. No wonder why we see so much abuse today, so much rape and so much neglect. People just dont get it, and our culture trains them not to. Im calling for guys to return to something called chivalry. This is a word that is both very special to me and holds a tremendous amount of mystique attached to it. In relationships it means to be the honorable man and truly and totally respect your loved one. The beginning paragraph on Wikipedia about the word reads this: Chivalry is a term related to the medieval (Middle Ages) institution of knighthood which has an aristocratic military origin of individual training and service to others. Chivalry was also the term used to refer to

always thought I would kind of like to see a ghost. That is until what I thought was a ghost took a bottle of contact lens solution and placed it on the bathroom sink for me to find. After spending several minutes looking for my bottle of Bausch and Lomb Contact Solution, the bottle was no where to be found, and I jokingly asked the ghost that lived with my family (or so we thought) to kindly return the bottle of saline at his convenience. Wearing my glasses instead of my contacts, I returned to my bedroom and finished getting dressed for the day. It took maybe two minutes to finish putting the rest of my clothes on. I then returned to the bathroom for a reason I dont remember now, only to find the bottle of saline staring at me from the top of the bathroom sink. In my mind, the ghost had heard my request and was kind enough to leave the bottle right where I could not miss looking. The horror I felt was so intense and so real I can vividly remember losing my breath and quickly ran down the stairs to the living room to where my mom was. It was shear panic and fear. THE GHOST PUT THE BOTTLE OF SALINE OUT! THE GHOST PUT THE BOTTLE OF SALINE OUT! I was mumbling and talking and jabbering and scared to death. My mom, flabbergasted at my behavior, laughed out loud and told me that she found the saline and put it on the sink for me to find. A great wave of relief passed over my body. I calmed down and regained my senses. All my life growing up I had been interested in all things paranormal and I thought it would be cool to see a ghost one day. I can tell you, the day that bottle of saline was delivered to me by a ghost had

E Who turned on the TV? I

me terrified to no end. Or so I thought. The truth is, there was a reason myself and others in my household spoke out to the thin air on occasion. We really did believe the house we lived in was haunted, but it wasnt because ghosts were taking bottles of saline and hiding them. It was, in fact, for the very definitive sound of loud footsteps and bangs that would come from unoccupied rooms; it was for the sound of heavy footsteps slowly plodding up stairs where no one was walking; TVs would suddenly turn off and on; voices could be heard whispering in the basement; people would get a strange feeling like they were being watched -- all these things combined make for interesting living, especially while growing up a teenager that spent much time alone in the dwelling. Looking back, I dont feel like me or my family was in any danger. Being a fan of shows like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures have reassured me that most ghosts (if you believe in that sort of thing) are just people who were alive at one point and now have failed to move on. There is nothing terribly disturbing about banging, knocking, or footsteps when it comes down to it, but the idea of something unknown causing such phenomena can be quite unsettling. There is a sense that your personal and private space is being invaded by an unwanted guest, and I can liken it to a feeling of being violated in some ways. Much like the family that comes home and finds their home in disarray because it has been ransacked in a burglary, much the same is the feeling that some creepy dead person may be the culprit who has been hiding your socks or drinking your beer (not that ghosts can drink beer, but havent you ever opened your fridge expecting to pop cold a one only to find its gone? You swear up and down there was one beer in there when you opened the fridge this morning! More than likely, common sense dictates your roommate or spouse drank it, but what if you had no roommate or no spouse?) The banging was always scary to hear and the footsteps, too, but one particular moment occurred that still lives with me and creeps me out to this day. Not that it was much of anything, I guess (I never did see anything that looked like an apparition in the traditional sense) but it was enough to weird me out to this day. The story, as it goes, is told from my mothers point of view, and she related it to me when I was much older. During the summer of 1986, she was awoken to the sound of my TV blaring from my room. It was on and it was loud enough to wake her up from a dead sleep and it was disturbing her enough that she felt she needed to go and check on me (or at least tell me to turn the damn TV volume down). When she opened my door, I was sleeping soundly (almost unconscious) on my stomach. The television, not even ten feet away from my bed, was blasting white noise at full volume on a channel that was playing nothing but white snow. Walking into my room, she checked on me briefly, made sure I was asleep, and turned the knob off to the television. The TV went dark, all was quiet, and she went back to bed. To my dismay, which I discovered later, the TV was unplugged. Two things bother me about that story. The TV was unplugged, which to this day makes the hair stand up on my arms just thinking about it, and the fact that I was oblivious to what was taking place in my room. The reason, I surmise, this has always stuck in my head, had something to do with Ronald Defeo, who on November 13, 1974,

a group of mounted men-at-arms as well as to martial valour. It is often associated with ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly love: "the source of the chivalrous idea," remarked Johan Huizinga, who devoted several chapters of The Waning of the Middle Ages to chivalry and its effects on the medieval character, "is pride aspiring to beauty, and formalized pride gives rise to a conception of honour, which is the pole of noble life." Thats what its all about, right there. Todays version of romance is much like high-fructose corn syrup and pretty much all the toxic foods we eat today that were genetically modified in some soulless, white laboratory. This is a call to return to the real deal, and a call for men to be chivalrous once again. God loves you and so do I. Any feedback, comments or questions? Id love to hear from you, you can reach me at crosshub@live.com

went through his home at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY, with a .35 caliber rifle and murdered his family. The end circumstances eventually culminated in a book by author Jay Anson called The Amityville Horror. Descriptions of the crime scene indicated the victims were in their beds, all on their stomachs, and none had been awakened by the sound of a .35 caliber rifle being fired multiple times. Coincidence? Yes, but it always sticks out in my mind that maybe some creepy spook had subdued me in ordered to blast the volume on my unplugged television. We didnt live in the home much longer after that and when we moved away, thank goodness, nothing followed us (as it is my understanding sometimes spooks follow you). No one was ever hurt, but we were weirded-out quite often and it always made for good conversation. Please note, this is just one of my experiences with the paranormal, as there were several others that happened in our home that I have failed to mention. The house is still there (I drive by it occasionally) and I always wonder if the current tenants have experienced any of the same phenomena. I would never disclose the address, but I will say that it is on the north side of town in the Valley Middle School district. In the end, I think my curiosity was satisfied enough that I have absolutely no interest in seeing a ghost. Im not sure, now that Im much older, how I would deal with things if I did see something spooky. The interest in the paranormal still interests me, but I am quite happy to feed my appetite with shows like Ghost Adventures. Let the ghosts follow THEM home instead.

Carving Out the World in Photo: Jamie & Jeremy Manstrom

Fine Arts
Mike Peterson Contributing Writer
ouve heard the saying over and over again, that life is a rollercoaster. Even if those of you born with a silver spoon in your mouth, youre still going to encounter a drop eventually; its inevitable. Thats just the way life is. Introducing Jamie Manstrom, a Grand Forks native and 25 year old. The roller coaster shes been on has probably been more extreme highs and lows than most of us will ever go through. Considering all this, shes never been one to complain. A few years ago, she met Jeremy Manstrom, a 26 year old guy fresh out of NDSU who might be best known for his role in a fantastic ska band called Kimmy Gibbler named after the crazy chick from the 1980s-early 90s TV show Full House. Together they combine as Manstrom Photography, doing various freelance photography gigs. They are two very bright and artistic individuals; their work stands out as much as they do as people. I was able to catch up with them. Please take a moment to learn their story and their insight on their art. A5: Jamie, I know you had your battles in this life as much as anyone. Would you be willing to briefly share them and how they impacted you as a person and in your work? JM: In 2004, the summer after I graduated from high school, my life was changed drastically due to a drunk driver. This left me with life long injuries and took my friend Monte Zak's life. With the emotional strain and being in and out of hospitals this put my entire life on hold for quite a few years. It was in this time that I found my love for photography. My camera and guitar became my therapy. When I start to struggle, I can just pick up my guitar or my camera, and I get lost in creating things. A5: You guys are both very artistic people, whether from music or otherwise, what made you get interested in photography? JM: Who wouldn't want a job that doesn't feel like work? It's just so much fun and creating art together is such a rewarding experience. A5: What are the most common themes or rather, the underlying thread in your guys' work? JM: We like to take more of a fashion approach to our work. We love highly stylized photographs, yet still capturing the personality of who We're photographing. A5: What are your credentials as photographers and what are you doing now? JM: We've been involved in photography for four years, completing degrees both in Minnesota and the Rocky Mountain School of Photography. We're currently running Manstrom Photography, booking seniors, weddings, and family portraits. Last year we won our first national award, in which over 60,000 entries were reviewed, mom even hung that one up on the fridge, it was a proud day. A5: How did you guys meet? JM: We share a wonderful group of friends who would get together every Thursday to watch The Office and then go out for late night food and fun. We both showed up one night and the rest is history. A5: What are your guys aspirations for the future? JM: We want to continue to do exactly what we're doing right now. Working together with clients that appreciate the creative side of photography. We aspire to capture and create how a moment feels for someone or a couple so everytime they look back it feels like they are standing there in that moment. Their lives are proof that no matter what you go through in life, you can find your

passion to survive whether its art, music, science or whatever. Its a testament that regardless of any adversity you can still succeed. Oh, and keep the humor too. They are as goofy as anybody out there.

Twelve Hours of Enduring delirium

your physical and endurance limits in a 12 hour long mountain biking race at the Turtle River State Park in North Dakota. END-TOMBED (Extreme North Dakota - Twelve Our Mountain Bike of Enduring Delirium) will be the fifth race of the year that END Racing has put on. END Racing has made a name for themselves in Grand Forks and beyond for putting on great adventure races of varying degrees of difficulty from six hour races to 24 hour races. They also are the ones who get people off their butts in the winter time to compete in the Iceman Triathlon . Now, END Racing is putting on the most ridiculous mountain biking race in terrain that is far from mountainous. On the cusp of Halloween, ENDTOMBED will be a challenge for both novice and expert riders, but will also bring in the Halloween theme to make it fun for everyone. The race will have two categories, the Zombie Riders (those going solo) and the Skeleton Army (a relay team of up to four riders). The race will be held in a standard lap format. Laps will take riders anywhere from 45-90 minutes to complete (depending on skill and fatigue levels), and the last lap is the one you're on when the 12 hours is up. Teams can have riders go in any order (a stronger rider can do two laps for every one a teammate does). The course will involve about 75 percent single and double track (with most of the single track being fun rolling terrain in and out of forests) and about 25 percent roads (both dirt and paved). The single track is not super technical, so it is definitely suitable for more recreational level riders. Prizes for top riders in all categories, assuming category goes at least three deep: Male Zombie, Female Zombie, coed Skeleton Army, all male Skeleton Army, and all female Skeleton Army. For those doing the relay, there will be a

lot of down time while waiting for teammates to finish, to combat that, race organizers have come up with many other fun contests. you can paint your face, dress up, and act like a zombie. Don't have all the face painting gear? They'll have someone on-site who will be able to make you look even deader than youll feel between laps. S'mores (yeah, theyll have some of the fixins around for folks to enjoy after dark), but youd better be sure your stomach can

take it. Music. Racers playlists... will be playing at the race headquarters. Pumpkin carving! Theyll have a bunch of pumpkins available (donations encouraged) to keep you busy while teammates are charging the course. Though youll have to bring your own carving tools. Prizes will also be given out for the best pumpkin at the awards ceremony! For more information on ENDTOMBED, visit www.endracing.com.
