Dr. Nicolas Bazan
De Nicolas Bazan (MD, Ph.D) is a true renaissance man ~ scientist,
mentor, creative thinket, innovator, inventor, community leader ~ a
man of strong faith and a role model. Dr. Bazan came to New Orleans
28 years ago with his wife and 5 children to escape political oparession
in is native country, Argentina, and shortly thereafter was awarded an
endowed chair at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
made possible by Emest C. and Ivette C. Vllere. He subsequently
founded the LSU Neuroscience Center of Excellence and the
Interdisciplinary Training Program in Neuroscience at that institution.
His high-impact research and discoveries have focused on
Alzheimer’s disease, retinal blinding diseases, Parkinson's,
depression, and schizophrenia, searching for cures or new medical
treatments to slows their progression. His contributions tothe life
Sciences include discoveries of novel mechanisms that are targets
for therapies in experimental stroke, gene expression, and memory.
His research has also shown that dietary intake of omege-3 fatty
acids, which are uniquely enriched in the central nervous system,
play a role in preventing andlor slowing the progression of retinal
degenerations. Most recently he and his colleagues have icentified
a neuroprotectin molecule and have shown that itis an effective
anti-nflammatory agent in models of experimental strcke and
Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Bazan's translational research and inventions have resulted in
more than 20 patents/patent applications. He has also developed
several bio-technology companies. In 1986, he helped found InSite
Vision, a start-up company producing innovative drug delivery
systems for treatments wich reduce eye inflammation. in 2000, he
founded St. Charles Pharmaceuticals, which became New Orleans’
first biotechnology/pharmaceutical company. His discoveriespatents
have resulted in a “new Tylenol” that is non-toxic to the liver and
kidneys and serves asa highly effective analgesic with no addictive
properties. These efforts have influenced the development of a
knowledge-based economy in Louisiana.
Dr. Bazan has received numerous awards for his contrivutions,
including the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award ftom the
National Institutes of Health. He has been elected member of the
Royal Academy of Medicine, Spain (1996), elected fellow ofthe Royal
College of Physicians of ireland, Dublin (1999), and isthe recipient
of the Proctor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by The Association
for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (2007),
Dr, Bazan has also contributed more broadly to the New Orleans
community as a mentor and supporter ofthe cultural arts. For this
work, he received the Role Model Aviard from the Young Leadership
Council of New Orleans (1994); the City Business Innovator of the
Year Award (2002); The Alzheimer's’
Association Greater New Orleans Chapter
‘Award (2002); the Family Services of Greater
‘New Orleans (Ten Outstanding Persons) Award
(2003); and the New Orleans City Eusiness
Health Care Heroes Award in 2008.
