Building a Giant Peace Dove
From the Desk of Dr. Jane
Every year, the United Nations International Peace Day is held on 21 September,
when people around the world express their desire for peace. It is hoped that
there will be a ceasefire among warring factions on that day. We have chosen
to celebrate Day of Peace during a weekend close to 21 September so that the
majority of Roots & Shoots groups, their families and other JGI friends can be
involved, I have chosen to have the “Roots & Shoots Day of Peace” take place in
late September in support of the United Nation’s peace endeavors.
At this time we “fly” Giant Peace Dove puppets in cities, towns, and villages
around the world and make a commitment that we shall work towards a world at
peace. Last year, celebrations for peace were held and Giant Peace Doves flew in
113 cities in a total of 35 countries. From Beijing to Amsterdam to New York City to
Buenos Aires, Dar Es Salaam to Kathmandu, Giant Peace Doves spread their wings
across the globe.
This book, the 2008 Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace Book illustrates
how Roots & Shoots members and friends are making peace possible—in
themselves, within their communities and around the world! These celebrations are
truly important. They bring people of different cultures and religions together in
their community; and create a feeling of solidarity among Roots & Shoots around
the globe. By flying these doves we also make a commitment to living in better
harmony with nature. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the 2008
Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace.

“It was such a beautiful event and the children were so
excited to be part of such an amazing global event! They
said so many times that it was so exciting that so many
children all over the world were doing the very same thing
as they were doing at the same time – all for peace in the
world!”
