Disc golf course expands at Stafford Woods
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
Disc golf gives you all the joy of
real golf, just without the price
and time commitment. And now,
Voorhees residents can enjoy a
full disc golf course in their own
backyards, with an 18-hole course
at Stafford Woods on Evesham
Road.
The idea for the course came
about in 2011, when Adam Harris
and Christian Exley sought out a
space to create a course.
I moved here from Delaware,
Harris said. As soon as I got here,
I asked my wife where we could
play disc golf and she told me we
would have to go back to
Delaware. I knew that wasnt
going to work.
After creating a temporary
course at Connolly Park, Harris
knew a permanent course needed
to be created.
Connolly Park just wasnt the
right place for a disc golf course,
Harris said. There was too much
wetlands. As soon as I saw
Stafford Woods, though, I knew
that was the place.
Stafford Woods was preserved
with municipal open space and
state Green Acres funds to be
used for passive recreation,
which allowed Harris and Exley
to begin preliminary designs for
the course.
There were problems with the

Jersey and has become very popular since the inclusion of a back 9 in January. A recreation league and tournaments now are being held at
the course.

Voorhees Township is pleased to an-
nounce the creation of a Veterans Wall of
Honor in tribute to those who have worn
the uniform of the United States military.
This wall will pay homage to veterans who
have completed honorable service in the
United States Armed Forces.
Voorhees Township is proud of our vet-
erans, so with the generous assistance of
local donors, we will give recognition to
our honorable veterans who have served
our country. The wall will be located inside
the Voorhees Town Hall at 2400 Voorhees
Town Center. Each honored veteran can
have his or her military service, including
conflict/campaigns
served, peace-time
service, medals
awarded and other
information recog-
nized. The wall will
consist of a plaque
for each veteran
containing a 5x7
picture along with
a brief description
of the veterans
military service.
Recently, letters
and forms were
sent to all
Voorhees veterans
or their surviving
spouses that we
have on record. We would like to honor any
qualified Voorhees veteran or any veteran
who may not be from Voorhees but is an
immediately family member (spouse, par-
ent, sibling our child) of a Voorhees resi-
dent.
Our recently retired Municipal Clerk,
Jeanette Schelberg, is a veteran and has
been a tireless advocate for veteran causes.
She has given her time and money toward
making our dream of a Wall of Honor into
a reality. On behalf of the other members
of the Voorhees Township Committee and
our Voorhees Community, thank you to
Jeanette for her passion.

e realize that you may have
other, more pressing con-
cerns on your mind. After
all, summer has officially started, the
kids are out of school, its hot, its
rainy, then its hot again.
Youd rather be by a pool or at the
beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear
or the Jersey Shore shark, planning
your Fourth of July celebrations, your
family vacation, or pondering the silli-
ness of the government making salt
water taffy the states official candy.
And yes, we realize that late June is
not typically the time for reflection.
That is usually reserved for the wan-
ing days of December and the begin-
ning of a new year.
But for us at Elauwit Media, weve
spent the last few months looking
back, and well be spending a chunk of
our summer doing the same.
Thats because, come August, well
be turning 10 years old. Our first
newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, de-
buted in August 2004. Since then,
weve expanded quite a bit.
Along the way, we have some great
memories. Weve made great contacts,
some great friends and have done our
best to serve the residents of every
town we cover.
Now, its time to reflect on those 10
years. This summer, well be celebrat-
ing the last decade, and we want your
input.
What has the last 10 years meant to
you? What does your life look like
today compared to what it looked like
in 2004? What does any stretch of 10
years mean in a larger sense?
Over the summer, well be compil-
ing stories, photos and more that help
us paint a picture of what 2004-2014
has meant, both to us specifically and
to the town and its residents.
If youd like to be a part of this ef-
fort, if youd like to contribute your
thoughts, your insights, your stories
and your photos, please send an email
to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com.
Were involving our readers in our
10-year celebration because you are
the reason we started our first Sun
newspaper, you are the reason we
started more, and you are the reason
we continue to publish every week.
The last 10 years have been great for
us, and we hope they have been equal-
ly as great for you.
Help us reflect on these past 10 years
as we prepare for the next 10, and
hopefully even more.
Help us as we celebrate 10 years
We want your input on what the last decade has meant to you
Help us out
We want to hear your stories and see your
photos from the last 10 years. Send them
in to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com with
the subject line 10-year celebration.

please complete the form and re-
turn it so we can honor you. If
you are a Voorhees veteran who
has not received the letter or a

How to Keep Cool and Safe

During A Hot Summer
Its only June, but tem-
peratures are on the rise
and heat alerts have al-
ready been issued for the
upcoming summer sea-
son. As the liaison to
Camden Countys Depart-
ment of Health and
Human Services, I want to
share with you some valu-
able tips from our health professionals that
can help you enjoy the summer and cope with
the heat.
To avoid heat-related illness, do the follow-
ing:
Avoid, as much as possible, working or
playing in the hot sun or other hot areas. If
you must be out in the sun, wear a head cover-
ing. A wide-brimmed hat or visor will not only
protect your head from intense rays of the
sun, it will also provide a shield for your eyes.
Use air-conditioners and fans. Open win-
dows to release trapped hot air.
If you take medication, consult with your
physician. Some medications cause a bad re-
action in hot weather.
Wear lightweight clothing.
Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids,
warm and cool to prevent dehydration from
the heat.
Maintain a normal diet.
Shower or bathe in water that is near skin
temperature.
Do not leave older people, children or pets
alone in cars.
Check frequently on older or ill family
members and friends
Make sure there is adequate ventilation
and cooling in their homes, that they drink
plenty of liquids and that theyre not experi-
encing medical difficulties.
The early warning signs of heat related ill-
ness are decreased energy, slight loss of ap-
petite, faintness, light-head-
edness and nausea. People
experiencing these symp-
toms should go to a cool en-
vironment, drink liquids,
and remove excess clothing
and rest.
Parents need to keep
their children sun-safe this
summer. Research shows a
link between sunburns in children and an in-
creased risk of melanoma and skin cancer
later in life. Parents can take steps now to pre-
vent that from happening:
Choose hats that shade your childs face,
neck and ears (wide-brim hats are best) and
clothing made of fabrics you cant see through
when held up to the light. Encourage t-shirts
instead of tank tops.
Apply sunscreen on exposed skin. Choose
a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both
Ultraviolet A and B rays (UV-A and UV-B) with
a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15.
Apply liberally 20 minutes before going out-
doors and reapply every two hours or after
swimming or sweating.
Require your kids to wear sunglasses.
Choose those with 99 to 100-percent UV-A and
UV-B protection in a wrap-around style that
protects tender skin around the eyes.
UV rays reflect off water and sand and
also reach below the waters surface. Co9ntin-
uous reapplication of sunscreen on exposed
skin is important even when children are pas-
sively playing on the beach or in the pool all
day.

Full 18-hole disc golf
course opened in January
location, though. Because the
land was once farmland, there
was a lot of debris that needed to
be removed.
There were thousands of feet
of barbed wire, as well as old
barns that we needed to remove
before we could even begin the
work on the course, Harris said.
Volunteers helped with the
process, and after some hard
work, a nine-hole course was fin-
ished in July 2012.
I am most proud of the volun-
teers and committee members of
Voorhees for all the help they
gave us, Harris said. Without
them, none of this could have got-
ten done.
The full 18-hole course opened
this January, and Harris has seen
a huge increase in the number of
people playing since then.
There have been three times
the amount of people out here
this year as opposed to last year,
he said. There were over 100 peo-
ple here in one day, and they came
from all over Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Maryland and even as
far away as Michigan.
With more people coming out
to play, Harris has begun organiz-
ing tournaments and leagues.
The first annual Stafford Open
took place on June 14. People had
to be put on a waiting list after
registration maxed out a week be-
fore the event.
Harris has also created a recre-
ation league that takes place on
Wednesday evenings and Sunday
mornings.
The turnout for all the events
has been amazing, he said. Peo-
ple of all ages and from all walks
of life have been coming out to
play and enjoy themselves.
The Stafford Woods disc golf
course is free and open to the pub-
lic.
I really hope people keep com-
ing out this summer, Harris
said. Its a great way to spend a
day with your family or come out
to compete in a friendly atmos-
phere. And its right here for peo-
ple to get to now.

OBITUARIES
The Sun will print obituaries,

By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
Hillary Platt, a Voorhees
resident, has been conducting
healthy relationship programs
at the Voorhees Middle School for
the past two years. Little
did she know, this would lead to
her hosting her own radio
program, which began on June
11.
Platt has a background in do-
mestic abuse, working as a case
coordinator for Project SARAH.
She is passionate about raising
awareness for domestic abuse,
which she believes begins in the
teenage years.
In dealing with victims of do-
mestic abuse, they are amazed
when we can trace the abuse back
to their teen years, Platt said. If
we can educate teenagers to rec-
ognize abuse at such a young age,
there will be a much smaller per-
centage of adults who are
abused.
Platt is proud of the programs
she puts on at the middle school.
She designs the programs to not
only educate the students about
abuse, but to show them services
available for those who are being
abused.
The first step Im trying to
teach the kids is to recognize
abuse, she said. But the more
important part is showing them
that there is help out there.
As a result of these programs,
Platt was asked to be a guest on
the Talk Exchange radio program
The Fine Point to discuss do-
mestic abuse. After her guest ap-
pearance, Platt was asked if she
would be interested in hosting
her own program.
I didnt know what to think,
she said. Of course I said yes,
but Id never hosted my own pro-
gram before. But, I knew it was an
opportunity to reach a larger au-
dience.
Her show is called Love
Shouldnt Hurt and it airs
Wednesdays at 3 p.m. The guest
on her initial show was Kathy
Freiss, the program coordinator
on human trafficking for the state
Attorney General's Office. Her
second guest was Margo Viola,
author of Cracked Shell, Whole
Yoke, a true story about domes-
tic abuse.
I really want my guests to be
people who have first-hand expe-
rience with domestic abuse,
Platt said. Whether they work
for organizations designed to stop
it or have experienced it them-
selves, I want listeners to hear
from people they can relate to.
While she sees the radio pro-
gram as an opportunity to edu-
cate, she also understands this is
an issue that needs to continuous-
ly be talked about. Both in schools
and on the radio, Platt wants to
keep pushing forward with her
message.
The more people hear about
domestic abuse, the less shame
they feel, she said. Its great ed-
ucating teens and adults, but they
will stay in abusive relationships
until they realize theyre not the
only ones this is happening to. At
the very least, I hope my pro-
grams spark conversations and
make those affected feel less
ashamed about the abuse.
Platt has not announced her
next guest and will continue host-
ing Love Shouldnt Hurt on
Talk Exchange radio at 3 p.m. on
Wednesdays. To listen, visit
www.talkexchangeradio.com.
