magazine
JULY 2014
Happy Independence Day!

This month marks our nations 238th birthday. Its not a nice, neatly numbered
anniversary like the 200th or 250th, to be sure but it is an important one.
Those 238 years show that Americans are still dedicated to pursuing and protecting freedom, whatever that might mean to them individually and as a nation.
For some, freedom means the ability to make a living doing what they love,
perhaps by sharing with others not only the physical, but the spiritual and psychological benefits of yoga. For others, its the right to say what they really think or
to make sure everyone has the information they need to make informed choices
(we here at Natures Pathways are pretty partial to this one, well admit). And for
others still, its the simple opportunity to live a healthy, happy life, enjoying the
company of friends and family.
What are the freedoms you hold most dear? What do you fight for in your life?
Perhaps you believe it is of the utmost importance to enjoy unspoiled, untainted
natural resources, like Jill Carlson with Holy Wisdom Monastery. Learn about
how you can help protect the environment in Jills article, Going green to save
the planet.

Too much stuff dragging you down?
Some crave freedom from the daily 9-to-5 grind. New writer Dan Conlon offers
insight into how owning a home-based business can help individuals Crack the

Perhaps you also want to pursue the knowledge needed to help your furry
friends lead healthy long lives. Lori Scarlett of Four Lakes Veterinary Clinic asks,

reminds us, If its hot for you, its hot for them.
This July, take some time to reflect on those opportunities you wouldnt want to
live without and do your part to keep freedom alive.

Watermelon:
Summers
best gift

By Kathryn Coppola

he picture of summer for me is being active outside, seeing

all the American flags hung with pride, and catching
glimpses of fireflies. The energy that comes with summers
long days is contagious and can seem endless. So, what is the best
way to enjoy summer without over exerting ourselves? Watermelon one of Chinese medical theorys best-tasting herbs.
Watermelon is natures greatest summer gift. Not only is watermelon fun and messy to eat, but the health benefits are also pretty
spectacular.

Summers energy drink

If youre active in the hot summer months, youve most likely

enjoyed a refreshing electrolyte drink to replenish all the salts
youve depleted through sweating. Consider a pure, natural drink:
blend up some watermelon and add juice from a lime! Watermelon
is high in potassium, which helps to maintain proper electrolyte
and acid-base balance. The potassium also helps with muscle and
nerve function to help prevent cramping. When your muscles
start to cramp up from exercising this summer, it is often a good
reminder to increase your electrolytes and potassium intake.

Natures coolant

Despite being 90 percent water, watermelon is much more efficient at cooling down your core temperature than just drinking

ice water. Not everyone loves the heat and humidity of summertime. Other than being uncomfortable and sweaty, if your core is
warmer than ideal, it can manifest as frustration, irritability and
even headaches. Bringing watermelon to the neighborhood barbecue might be more of a gift than you originally imagined.

Improved cardiovascular function

Everyone is naturally more active in the summertime. That means

your heart works more to make sure muscles have the blood and
oxygen they need to function properly. Watermelon is high in
both citrulline and arginine; both of these amino acids help to
maintain blood flow, healthy arteries and overall function of the
cardiovascular system.

Staying young

Watermelon is an excellent source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. In general terms, antioxidants slow down the aging process.
The lycopene of watermelon does this by helping to slow the
breakdown of muscles and all body tissues. It boosts the immune
system and fights heart disease.
This summer, serve up natures greatest summer gift, watermelon. As the juice drips down the side of your face, be sure to
smile and remember that the sweetness in your mouth is helping
you stay youthful by providing the electrolytes for your muscles,
boosting your cardiovascular function and helping you be more
active, allowing you to keep your cool both literally and figuratively. Happy summer!

What is a
concussion?

By Jed Downs

he youth soccer season is upon us, soon to be followed by

football season, hockey season and wrestling, basketball,
rugby, lacrosse, gymnastics, etc. But the most common
cause for the topic of concussions is bicycle accidents.
This topic is making its way into the lay press. Most of this is in
relationship to concussions in professional sports, whether it is individuals being sidelined temporarily or the recent class-action suit
by the retired NFL players. Concussions are more serious in child
or teenage sports, and I hope to educate you about what happens
during concussions or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI).
Most concussions are associated with a direct blow to the
head, but acceleration/deceleration forces and fluid waves within
the body can create the force needed for the injury cascade of a
concussion to occur.
What is an injury cascade? With stretching and compression of
the brain, nerve fibers are injured and the connections between
nerves are partially disrupted. The nerves dont tear into pieces,
but instead their membranes leak. They leak ions/mineral salts
that are kept on opposite sides of membranes for maintaining the
electric potential needed for nerve transmission and they leak
neurotransmitters, especially excitatory amino acids. At the same
time, blood flow is disrupted. The first response of the nerve cells
is to try to restore the concentration of ions on either side of the
cell membrane. Energy is required for the pumps to do this.
Energy is supposed to be generated by breaking down glucose
and making a high energy compound, adenosine triphosphate
(ATP) that is the immediate fuel for the pumps. This takes place
in the mitochondria. But a problem now arises. The mitochondria
needs the right balance and concentration of salts/ions in order to
function properly. As the membranes leak, excess calcium moves
into the cells, poisoning the mitochondria so they cannot make
energy. Energy is needed to be able to pump the calcium back out
of the cell in exchange for sodium. If the demands on the brain are
excessive, or the injury is severe enough, this can lead to cellular
swelling and death of nerve cells.
Meanwhile, the ability of the brain to regulate its blood supply
is disturbed; blood gets shunted, causing too little or too much
www.naturespathways.com

delivery to various regions. The neurotransmitters that leak from

the cell are part of this problem. The changes associated with injury
peak in the first 24 hours, but they can take a long time to resolve
or heal as best they can. The healing process takes longer in young
children than teens and longer in teens than in collegiate players
or adults. The usual timeframe to restore the chemical balances in
the brain is approximately 15 days in young adults, but it may take
longer as it usually does in children.
Young children are susceptible to concussions because the insulation on their nerves is not well developed. Their heads are much
larger in relation to their torsos, and they do not have adequate
strength in their neck and shoulders to absorb contact forces.
Common symptoms associated with concussions include confusion, disorientation, dizziness or unsteadiness, headaches, memory
impairment and visual disturbance. Return to play guidelines
require that the patient be asymptomatic, but with the motivation
to play high, symptoms are often under reported. This is unfortunate as individuals are more susceptible to repeat concussions in
the early recovery phase and a second injury typically takes 45 days
rather than 15 to restore chemical balance in the brain.
Management is primarily sitting on our hands and waiting for the
body to do its thing. Drugs are sometimes used to control symptoms,
but they do not improve the brains ability to heal and side effects
often worsen. Brain rest is a relative concept. In animal studies, a
limited amount of exercise seems to be useful, but cutting back if it
causes headaches is thought to be appropriate, as is eliminating or
controlling screen time with TV, computers, smartphones and video
games. Care needs to be coordinated with your physician.
Next month, I will discuss the field assessment and potential
long term problems from MTBIs.

3 forms of
sleep apnea,
1 treatment device

By James W. Hill, DDS, MS

id you know approximately 22

million Americans suffer from
sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which there are pauses in
breathing or instances of shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. Each pause
in breathing, called an apnea, can last from
at least 10 seconds to several minutes, and
may occur five to 30 times or more an
hour at night. Wondering if you have sleep
apnea? Here are some common symptoms:
Loud snoring
Excessive daytime sleepiness

Sleep apnea can affect your quality

of life and that of your sleep partner.
Depression
Reduced resistance to infection
Poor memory
Mood problems
Headaches in the early morning

Sleep apnea can affect your quality of life

and that of your sleep partner. You may have

been witnessed grasping for air at night and

are excessively sleepy during the day.
Here are three forms of sleep apnea that
can occur while sleeping:

Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA

OSA occurs during sleep due to closure

of the airway. Sufferers of OSA have interruptions in sleep because their air passage
is blocked and their breathing stops; the
brain detects the lack of oxygen and sends
a momentary arousal to draw breath.
Although these occurrences may happen
hundreds of times per night, you may not
even be aware of them.

Central sleep apnea

The brains respiratory control centers are

imbalanced during sleep. Blood levels of
carbon dioxide and the neurological feedback mechanism that monitors them do
not react quickly enough to maintain an
even respiratory rate, with the entire system
cycling between apnea and hyperpnea,
even during wakefulness. The sleeper stops
breathing and then starts again. There is no
effort made to breathe during the pause in
breathing: There are no chest movements
and no struggling. After the episode of
apnea, breathing may be faster (hyperpnea) for a period of time: a compensatory
www.naturespathways.com

mechanism to blow off retained waste

gases and absorb more oxygen.

Complex sleep apnea

This is a combination of the two conditions

mentioned above. When obstructive sleep
apnea syndrome is severe and longstanding, episodes of central apnea sometimes
develop. The exact mechanism of the loss
of central respiratory drive during sleep in
OSA is unknown but is most commonly
related to acid-base and carbon dioxide
feedback malfunctions stemming from
heart failure. There is a constellation of
diseases and symptoms relating to body
mass, cardiovascular, respiratory and
occasionally neurological dysfunction that
have a synergistic effect in sleep-disordered breathing.

SomnoMed sleep apnea

treatment

If you suffer from OSA or snore, the

SomnoMed device may help. This is a
custom-made oral appliance that can
significantly reduce your sleep apnea and
give you and your partner better sleep. The
SomnoMed device allows for your airway
to stay open during sleep, thus improving
your sleep and quality of life.

A CPAP alternative

The SomnoMed is also a great alternative

to the continuous positive airway pressure,
or CPAP, machine. Many patients cannot
tolerate the machine due to mask discomfort, machine noise, dry mouth or nasal
congestion, and feelings of claustrophobia.
Sleep apnea is a common disorder that
is overlooked by many. It can affect your
health and family in many ways. Ask your
dentist if you have any of the mentioned
symptoms or have been diagnosed with
sleep apnea by your doctor; he/she can
likely help.

To screen or
not to screen:
The sunscreen
dilemma

By Julia McConahay

isconsin is known for its pale, cloud-dwelling,

Germanic-descendant residents, most of whom take
any opportunity to joke about their whiteness over
a brat and a beer. However, in true media-influenced fashion,
humans keep trying to cram themselves into societys idea of the
perfect body. Advancing technology has yielded an influx of
tanning salons, skin treatments and self-tanner products which
drape a golden veil onto innocent skin cells and out pop tan-looking Packer fans. Now thats entertainment.
But really, whats the big deal? Arent tanning beds just replacing the sun we dont have access to? Wisconsin residents dont get
nearly the amount of regular sun exposure it takes for their bodies
to produce an effective amount of vitamin D. The physical location of our lovely state lies on a plane in relation to the sun that
doesnt provide the minimum amount of exposure we need for a
full supply of this human-synthesized vitamin. In a 2007 report,
scientists at UW-Madison called Wisconsins low vitamin D

status epidemic. Symptoms of seasonal affect disorder are attributed to this deficiency. As the symptoms of SAD became more
recognized and addressed in the media, the commercial market
responded to this need with products created in an attempt to
shed some precious light on us, such as light boxes, special light
bulbs and sunbeds.
Yes, we need more vitamin D, but theres a huge difference
between healthy and harmful ultraviolet exposure. Consistent
exposure to the UV rays promotes the synthesis of melanin in
the skin, a process that increases overall pigmentation. Thus, the
suntan. Typically, fair-skinned people develop pockets of melanin
(which we know as freckles) instead of a smooth color layer. Since
Wisconsin residents tend to hide away indoors during the several
cold months of the year (when there actually isnt much sun
shining, anyway), this shielding from the sun keeps our skin in a
resting mode. The skin shuts down its protective pigment factory
when its not needed. This can be exceptionally dangerous when
the skin is suddenly exposed to intense UV rays in a sunbed or
during the first outings of spring and summer. The melanin level
has not been maintained and therefore we are at our most vulnerable to burning UVB rays and age-accelerating UVA rays. After all,
sunlight itself is a carcinogen, so we need to monitor how much
exposure we subject ourselves to in order to prevent skin cancer
and premature aging of the skin. This includes folding yourself
into those sunshine tacos at the tanning salon! So slap on some
sunscreen and were good to go, right?
Well, that depends on what type of sun protection you choose
and how much you put on. The most effective way to protect yourself from sun exposure is to plop a decent hat on your head, sport
some good shades with UVA/B blocking lenses, and slip an ultra
lightweight jacket or long-sleeved shirt over your shoulders to
completely block the sun.
www.naturespathways.com

As far as topical sunscreens go, there are two main types to

choose from. Physical (inorganic) barriers (i.e., zinc oxide and
titanium dioxide) physically block the skin from sunlight with
particulate matter, reflecting and scattering UV rays. Physical
barriers are nearly perfect sunscreens; they protect against UVA
and UVB, they start working immediately, theyre stable and dont
break down in the sun, and they are safe. Their use has traditionally been limited by aesthetic qualities with formulas that are
greasy, white and opaque.
Chemical (organic) barriers filter and absorb UV radiation.
Their chemical structure converts UV radiation to heat. They
vary in their chemical properties, as well as their ability to absorb
UVA, UVB or both. The catch with these products is that some
of them absorb UV radiation and are subsequently absorbed into
and underneath the skin and into our bloodstream, bringing the
suns impact with them. This is a source for huge concern among
health and wellness professionals, and has been the recent subject
of fervent media dialogue regarding the safety of sunscreen.
Environmental Working Group, a U.S. nonprofit agency, found
only eight percent of 500 sunscreens reviewed could be recommended for consumer use according to their system of evaluation. One of the common sunscreen ingredients, oxybenzone, is a
known hormone disruptor, while retinyl palmitate is under investigation over the possibility that it may become carcinogenic when
exposed to sunlight. The primary concern is potentially toxic or
unstable ingredients, as well as inflated sun protection factor (SPF)
claims. The higher the SPF, the higher the concentration of more

harmful ingredients. So using the higher SPF can actually increase

risk of physical harm. Also, individuals who choose a higher SPF
tend to stay in the sun longer, past the effective time frame.
There is a highly strategized advertising market out there
constantly feeding us reasons to buy this, avoid something else,
or choose one thing over another. I encourage you to be an active
consumer to explore some of these claims for yourself. Youll find
articles both online and in print, and its important to do so before
assuming the products youve been using are optimal and/or safe.
There are several significant factors that coincide with the use of
each product, and the ultimate decision regarding which ones
will influence your body is your own. My hope is that youll put
some thought into what youre choosing to buy to protect yourself
because ultimately youll be buying yourself some more time to
enjoy more seasons in the sun.

Veterinary
hospice

By Katie Hilst, DVM

s a veterinarian specializing in end of life pet issues and

in-home euthanasia, I am often asked about veterinary
hospice. People typically go to a hospice setting when
they have been diagnosed with a terminal disease process, with no
hope for a cure, to provide them with medical care to keep them
as comfortable as possible until death occurs. The definition of
veterinary hospice from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is care that will allow a terminally ill animal to
live comfortably at home or in a facility and does not believe that
such care precludes euthanasia. Hospice care for pets involves the
pets veterinarian, their staff, family members and other trained
professionals as needed.
Palliative care is a large part of hospice. Palliative care is providing relief for the pets symptoms of disease without trying to cure
the disease. Palliative care includes pain relief, control of nausea,
addressing nutritional support and dehydration. Many of the
hospice measures can be done at home; however, there may be
certain events that require in-clinic or hospital care. In-home
hospice care for pets may include the following:

HYDRATION SUPPORT: giving fluids under the skin to

correct dehydration.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT: giving injections of vitamins,

syringe feeding or feeding a pet through a feeding tube (a

feeding tube is placed at the clinic/hospital under general
anesthesia before the pet returns home) and giving antinausea medication.
PAIN MANAGEMENT: giving oral or injectable pain
medication, acupuncture, massage, reiki and chiropractic
adjustments.
MOBILITY SUPPORT: helping pets walk with the aid of a
harness, padded mats or a sling.
HYGIENE MEASURES: brushing, grooming and cleaning
the rear end area if the pet cannot keep themselves clean (this
may involve trimming fur, applying ointments to prevent
urine scald or using pee pads).
WOUND CARE: cleaning and dressing wounds, and perhaps
helping to rotate pets that cannot move themselves to prevent
bedsores from developing.

There are some circumstances that require a visit to a veterinary

clinic or hospital. Pets that are in respiratory distress are not good
candidates for in-home care. The cause of the distress needs to
be determined, and often measures to correct distress (oxygen,
removing excess fluid from the chest or abdominal cavity)
are ones that need a medical facility and trained personnel to
perform. Likewise, pets with heart trouble may need emergency
care like an electrocardiogram or ultrasound and should be seen
in a veterinary facility.
Veterinary hospice and palliative care are not a cure for a terminally ill animal. Hospice may allow a pet to live comfortably at
home with their disease for a while, but not forever. When hospice
measures are not enough to control the symptoms of the disease,
and the pet no longer has a good quality of life, or the pet is suffering, euthanasia should be considered. The big difference between
human and veterinary hospice care is that we can provide a peaceful euthanasia for our pets when all our best efforts can no longer
keep our pet comfortable and happy. Our final gift to them is a
gentle goodbye.

Discovering
your ultimate
purpose

By Teresa Martens

pening yourself up to new experiences can be a daunting

process, and opening yourself up wide enough to allow
the divine to flow through you can be even more daunting. Some of us have the belief that we are not able, worthy, or
enough this is just not true. Every one of us has the potential to
grow and evolve from a small acorn into a mighty oak as part of
the process of connecting with our ultimate purpose.
Most of us have, at one time or another, experienced a lack
of joy or focus, feelings of being stuck, unmotivated, depressed,
anxious, fearful and without enough energy to get through the
day. When these feelings take us over, they may result in food,
drug or alcohol addictions, self-abuse (verbal or physical),
suicidal thoughts or any other number of mechanisms to ward
off the feelings that we are feeling. Basically, we are running away
from facing the truth of who we are and are not living as we were
intended by the divine.
Its not that we dont want to help ourselves; the problem is
that we dont know how. We dont know the steps to take to get
us to that place that allows us to grow, evolve, learn and experience the fullness of who we are. Weve lost sight of the fact that we
are without exception wonderfully and beautifully made to

live lives of love, success, prosperity and abundance, with a deep

connection to our source by doing what we love.
The great news is that you do have everything you need within
you. You dont have to search outside of yourself. It is already there
waiting to be awakened! By creating space within your being that
allows for freedom to express yourself in whatever way brings you
joy is a process, and one that should be taken to allow the fullest
expression of who you are. This process includes changing or shifting your energy (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually),
identifying where the leaks are that are draining your energy, having
love for yourself, providing forgiveness for yourself and others, and
learning tools and techniques that keep your energy strong and
flowing. By releasing anything that no longer serves you and building a strong foundation, you allow yourself to discover your ultimate
purpose and then are able to live that purpose joyfully every day.
Your life is like a garden. Your garden right now might be full
of weeds, which creates some of the feelings mentioned earlier
feelings of being stuck, unfocused, lacking joy and a general
sense of not being well. Through the process of discovering your
ultimate purpose, you weed out your garden, allowing your inner
beauty to reach the light and in so doing, begin to live an inspired
and creative life.
If you are ready to take the next step in your growth and evolution to allow for a life that fulfills all your needs and desires by doing
what you love, all you need do is take one step forward and allow
yourself to take inspired action in the direction of your dreams.
If you are ready to move forward toward creating an inspired life
living your ultimate purpose, contact Teresa for your free discovery
session.

The health
benefits of
water and herbs

By Jack A. Erb

erbs and water make a very powerful team. With 70

percent of our bodies composed of water, most of the
bodys molecules are made up of water. Water is more
vital than you may imagine. As we age, this can become critical.
Our Western diets have become more and more acidic over the ages
and this is the cause of most of your disease. The bodys pH on the
pH scale, which runs from 0-14, should be at about 7.3. If your pH via
saliva or urine testing is anything less, you are on your way to disease.

How much water should a person drink?

You should drink half your weight in ounces of water daily. That
means, if you weigh 200 pounds, you should be drinking 100
ounces of water a day. Most people I know dont even come close.
They say, Well, I drink coffee and lemonade and other liquids.
Does that count? The answer is a resounding no! In fact, that may
actually make the problem worse. Coffee, soda, Vitamin Water
and Gatorade are all highly acidic.
Water is crucial to biological processes working well. Water is
essential to digestion, elimination of wastes and regulation of body
temperature. Well-hydrated seniors have fewer wrinkles because
water keeps tissues soft and flexible, along with helping joints
work better. A new study suggests that water may play a role in
energy production. This makes sense, because of the large percentage of our cells that are nearly 95 percent water. Lack of water in
the cells can lead to respiratory problems, sleep debt, fuzzy brain
syndrome (your brain is 80 percent water), fatigue, dry cough and
headaches, along with nervousness.
Medicines, foods, herbs or supplements cannot function properly without water! Back in the day, we used herbs primarily in
teas or decoctions. What did this mean? It meant that in addition
to the herbs, the body was getting additional water. Today is quite
a different story. Herbs and supplements are taken in capsules or
pill form. That means we need to drink even more water to make
those herbs and supplements work in the body. They can only get
into our systems via our bodys fluids: blood and digestive fluids.
They need water in great quantities to get into the cells.
www.naturespathways.com

People taking three to four capsules per day should take 8-12
ounces of water per each three to four pills or supplements.
If taking 12 capsules a day like I do, you need to drink 32 to 40
ounces of water to get the full benefits of the herbs and or supplements. Alkaline water, if you have it available, is best. Get all those
vitamins, minerals and herbs into your bloodstream faster, thus
making those items more beneficial to your body.
I know its hard to drink that much water if you are not used to
drinking a lot. Alkaline water is micro clustered so the molecules
are smaller and able to get into your cells quickly. Upon rising in
the morning I drink a 12-ounce glass of 9.5 pH alkaline water. This
water is not cold, only cool, so my body does not have to cool it
down to be available to my system. Within five minutes, those 12
ounces of water are gone out of my stomach. Micro clustering has
allowed the water to pass through my abdominal walls into my
circulatory system. I then drink another 12-ounce glass of water.
Remember I said earlier that studies were starting to show that
water may give you more energy. From my personal experience,
that is in fact the case. I get more energy out of those two 12-ounce
glasses of water than I ever got out of a cup of coffee. Coffee always
gave me the jitters. The caffeine was too much for my nervous
system. Water is my fuel for the day!

Emotions and
bodywork
We are connected beings

By Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT,
NCBTM, member AOBTA

ur bodies are wonderfully complicated entities, which

makes the field of bodywork so exciting. Any kind of
bodywork that delves into the fascia prompts change in
those tissues on a level that cant be accessed with other methods
of healing. (Fascia is a blanket term for all connective tissue in
the body.) Our soft tissue muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin,
all the softer fascia of the body can be stretched, strengthened,
injured or torn. Thankfully, our bodies adapt and compensate for
an immense variety of potential mishaps that we encounter as
we go about our lives with both work and play. Also thankfully,
our bodies do heal, and they can also be retrained out of any bad
habits weve had. All we need to do is prompt our muscles to do
different things to learn new behaviors. What a wonderful fascial
system we have!
Many of us have had some type of injury. We may have gone
through physical therapy, just put some ice on it and taken antiinflammatories until our acute pain went away or we may have
ignored the pain until we no longer noticed it anymore, pushing
through the daily have tos. The fascia does eventually heal,
sometimes in spite of ourselves. But, if there was any emotional
trauma connected to that injury, the emotional aspect of the
injury does not simply go away as we ignore it. Ah, the complication now arises.
Our fascia retains those emotional memories. If this is a new
concept to you, then pause and think on that for a moment. Our
fascia retains those emotional memories until we release them.
Unless you have experienced this phenomenon, it may be difficult to grasp. I grasped the concept mentally years ago, yet I still
was not fully prepared for the first time I experienced this type
of healing. Many of us have learned to push down our emotions,
pressing on and not stopping to feel or to grieve. There may be fear,
sadness or anger associated with any traumatic event that results
in physical injury. How often do you think we allow ourselves the
time and space to process those feelings at the time they occur?
18

Natures Pathways | July 2014

Many of our chronic pain issues are simply our bodies crying
out, begging us to pay attention to what still needs healing, and
it may need to be on an emotional level. Our bodies can wait a
very, very long time for this, but eventually push comes to shove
and then someones back goes out simply from picking up some
laundry. Chronic pain plagues so many of us, and so often the
medical community doesnt understand exactly what is causing
that pain. Pain is the bodys method of communicating to us that
we need to stop what we are doing and change something. Discovering what needs to change is not always a simple task.
How do we experience this healing? It requires trust in your
therapist. It requires slowing down and allowing your mind, body
and spirit to express what needs expressing. It requires not forcing
your fascia to do what you think it should, but rather just letting
go. It requires not having an agenda for your bodywork session,
which comes back to trusting your therapist. Letting go with your
mind is imperative so that your fascia can then let go of whatever
it still needs to; you need to be in a parasympathetic state for this
type of healing to occur, and for any real changes in your fascia to
occur. If you are one who likes to chat during massage, you will
never get to this level of healing.
Not everyone needs this deep emotional release during bodywork, but many of us certainly do. If you ever feel the need to weep
during a bodywork session, please remember that it is good and
healthy to let that happen. Dont stifle the healing process with any
shoulds. You are safe with your therapist, and all licensed therapists receive training on this very topic. I recommend that you talk
to your therapist if youd like to know more.

loss of mental focus. Im sure a majority of
us have been under some stress, whether
physical, mental or emotional.
What are the different types of stress?
Physical stress is when you have incurred
an injury, or your body has undergone trauma from surgery. Mental and
emotional stress occurs when you have
recurring thoughts that circulate or
emotions that build up, but arent released.
Bottling up these thoughts and emotions
can lead to stress within the body. Stress
has been shown to lead to digestive problems, cardiovascular issues, mental health
problems and diabetes.

How does stress affect my

nutritional status?
1. Increase in fast food consumption:

With stress, there may be less of a desire

and decreased energy to cook food at

home. You may notice yourself eating

out more frequently, thus consuming
more fat, sodium and preservatives.
2. Forgetting/skipping meals: Youre
finding it hard to remember things
and you get so caught up in the day
that you forget to eat. You dont have
the hunger cues to remind you to eat
because most of your blood supply
is going to your muscles, not your
digestive system.
3. Increased intake of caffeine: Not
eating well-balanced meals can lead
to feelings of exhaustion. We look for
a quick fix, often grabbing the closest
cup of coffee or energy drink.
4. Eating the wrong foods: During
times of stress, we typically crave foods
high in carbohydrates and fats. These
foods tend to be lower in nutrients and
may promote weight gain.
www.naturespathways.com

How nutrient imbalances

affect the body

How can I protect my body

during times of stress with good
While caffeine can give you a quick nutrition?
boost, it will leave you feeling more
fatigued and you may need more and
more of it to feel awake. Caffeine is
very taxing on the adrenal glands, which
sit on top of each kidney. Caffeine overstimulates the adrenal glands, causing
them to release high amounts of cortisol,
the stress hormone, which may lead to
increased fat storage, mostly around the
abdominal area.
Issues with weight gain/loss come from
the food choices one makes during stressful times, as well as the increased cortisol
being released into the body. You may be
someone who isnt eating a lot and doesnt
understand why the weight isnt falling off.
The answer is cortisol.
Because youre not eating the proper
foods, your body isnt getting the right
nutrients it needs to stay healthy and build
a strong immune system. Consuming a
diet high in carbohydrates (sugars) will
promote inflammation within the body,
making it more difficult for foods to be
digested and absorbed.
When the appropriate type and amount
of foods are not being consumed, blood
sugar imbalances can develop. You may
notice increased fatigue, moodiness,
headaches or inability to concentrate.

Limit sugar: Make a conscious effort

to plan out a minimum of one meal and
two snacks per day that will contain the
nutrients your body needs during stressful times.
Decrease
caffeine:
Excessive
caffeine can cause anxiety-like symptoms and high blood pressure, lead
to dehydration, and drain the adrenal
glands. Replace caffeinated beverages
with water.
Supplement the adrenal glands:
Consider taking an adrenal glandular supplement during stressful times,
such as Standard Process Drenamin
(www.standardprocess.com/Products/
Standard-Process/Drenamin).
Consume B vitamins: Some foods
high in vitamin B are fish, shellfish, eggs
and red meat. You may want to consider
supplementing with additional B vitamins (www.standardprocess.com/Products/Standard-Process/Cataplex-B and
www.standardprocess.com/Products/
Standard-Process/Cataplex-B12).
Include vitamins A and C: Deeporange-colored veggies will contain
good amounts of vitamin A and C, such
as carrots, sweet potatoes and winter
squash. Apricots, cantaloupe and mango

are also great sources of vitamin A.

Dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, collard
greens) are excellent sources of vitamins
A and C as well.
Cope with stress: Find activities that will help you decrease your
stress levels. Exercising, talking with a
friend, reading, journaling, gardening
and meditating are some great ways to
diminish stress levels. Find a few that
work for you!

Natures Pathways | July 2014

In 2003, the Human Genome Project was completed and a group of

related gene mutations that cause a myriad of health concerns were
found to be defective in a large percentage of the population. This is
the MTHFR gene mutation and it can become active if you received
one copy from a parent or two copies from both of your parents.
If you are one of the estimated 20-40 percent of people who have
a single gene mutation, your ability to detoxify, produce enzymes,
heal from inflammation, generate neurotransmitters and support
your immune system is performing with 40 percent reduced function. If you are one of the 4-14 percent of people with two gene
mutations, you are performing these vital functions at 70 percent
reduced function.
The key mechanism disrupted by the MTHFR gene mutation is
the bodys ability to make an enzyme called methylenetetrahdrofolate reductase. This enzyme is critical to absorb the vitamin B9 or
folate (often supplemented as folic acid), process amino acids into
proteins and convert homocysteine to the amino acid methionine.
Low folate levels can cause the following symptoms due to
reduced RNA and DNA synthesis:
www.naturespathways.com

Fatigue
Lightheadedness
Forgetfulness
Irritability and moodiness
Palpitations
Behavioral disorders

If you have the MTHFR gene mutation, folic acid supplements can
actually make you worse. Folic acid supplement have a negative reaction in the body when they cannot be converted. Certain types of
cancers, including colon and rectal cancer, are associated with folate
deficiency. People who feel worse when they take standard multivitamin supplements may be more likely to have this gene mutation.
Elevated homocysteine levels may damage blood vessels,
causing a hardening of the arteries and blood clots. Increased
homocysteine levels show increased risk for heart attacks and
strokes, according to a study appearing in American Heart Association Journals. Many sources recommend increasing folic acid
supplementation; however, if you cant convert folic acid, this will
make you feel worse.
If you suspect you might have these issues, you can a supplement with special folate supplements that are pre-converted for
the body to utilize. The company Designs for Health manufacturers a patented folate derivative with high bioavailability for people
suffering from this gene mutation. The company also has a prenatal vitamin that includes this patented folate, which is the only
prenatal vitamin my office recommends.
There are three options to test for MTHFR gene mutations. You
can ask your allopathic physician to order the test through his or
her labs. You can find a health care practitioner who uses ALCAT
Cell Science System and they can order the test for you. Or you can
order gene testing through 23andMe and follow their instructions
for the methylation analysis.
If you have been struggling with chronic health concerns and
think you could benefit from these supplements, it is best to work
under the care of licensed health care provider familiar with
MTHFR gene mutation. There are additional supplements and
treatments that can address your symptoms and help your body to
rebuild while you regain your health.

Fun ways to
be a fit family

besity is a global epidemic affecting

people of all ages. According to The
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, more than one-third of Americans are considered obese. Being overweight
or obese has been linked to cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer,
and children who are overweight are likely
to be overweight or obese adults.
While eating a diet that is low in fat and
high in whole-grain fiber, vegetables and
lean proteins is important, exercise remains
one of the key factors in maintaining a
healthy weight. However, many adults and
children simply do not get enough exercise
during the day. An active lifestyle is often
hampered by the prevalence of digital
devices or sedentary jobs that encourage
more screen time than fitness time. But
there are ways for the entire family to get
fit. Exercising together is not just a great
way for families to get healthy, but also a
great opportunity to spend time together.
The following are a handful of ways families can work together to incorporate more
exercise into their daily lives.

TACKLE CHORES. Yes, tasks around

the house can count as exercise. Working

together not only gets you moving but also
cuts down on the time it takes to tackle
tasks around the house. Mowing the lawn,
vacuuming the rugs, sweeping the floor
all of these activities can get the heart
24

Natures Pathways | July 2014

pumping. Make
it fun by setting
chores to music or
competing against
one another to see
who gets their
task done first or
the best.
COMPETE IN THE POOL. Swimming

is a low-impact activity that works many

muscles in the body. Taking a dip in the
pool can be both relaxing and beneficial to
your health. Compete with family members
to make the most of the time spent in the
water. Host relay swimming races, see how
long each member of the family can tread
water or create any other competitions that
keep everyone in the pool moving.

CREATE AN OUTDOOR OBSTACLE

COURSE. Set up a series of obstacles

in your yard and host your own triathlon. You can jump through tires, climb
through tubes and scale trees. Make it fun
by having adults try to ride tricycles or pair
up an adult with a child for sack races. The
opportunities for fun are only hampered by
your imagination.
GO FOR FAMILY BICYCLE RIDES.

Traverse your neighborhood or blaze

new trails by riding bikes together. Young
children can be strapped into trailers that

are pulled behind the bike or ride in seats

attached to the bike itself. This gives everyone a chance to enjoy the great outdoors
and hone their cycling skills.
GO HIKING. Hiking is another fun family
activity that also happens to make for great
exercise. Choose a trail that may not be level
and push everyones endurance to the test.
STROLL THE BEACH. Walking or
running on sand offers more resistance
than walking on pavement. Take a stroll at
the seaside. Break up the walk by collecting
shells or stopping by the water to observe
marine wildlife.
HIT THE DANCE FLOOR. If youve been
invited to a wedding or a Sweet 16 party,
cut a rug and take advantage of the DJ and
dance floor. When enjoying yourselves,
you probably wont even realize how much
youre exercising.

Self-acceptance
and approval

By Deb Freeman

Prayer is you speaking to God. Meditation is God speaking to you between your
thoughts. You need to do both.
 Excerpt from The HuMan Handbook

hen we are born, we resonate

love, but we soon learn fear.
Our soul that is in our human
body is love. As a human, we play roles
like mother, father, daughter, son, teacher,
accountant, administrator, doctor, nurse
etc. Our EGO (edging God out) mind
creates judgments that tell us we are different. Soul to soul, we are one; we are love.
There is a spiritual distinction meditation we can learn that is not a deep meditation, but a type of meditation that helps
us to distinguish the difference between
our mind, body, spirit and vision. This
meditation takes us through awakening
our senses with sound, taste, smell, touch
and vision. These are senses that were used
thousands of years ago as a part of awareness in a surrounding, but today we have
repressed our ability to use these senses
consciously. Listening to this meditation
on a daily basis will help us to learn to tell
when our ego mind is trying to direct our
life. Our ego mind loves addiction, drama,
excitement and will tell us things like, I
have to do this; I have to do that; Im so
busy; Im not good enough; I cant, I cant,
I cant, etc. These negative tapes that play
www.naturespathways.com

in our head can be recognized and then

dismissed and replaced. For example,
before my feet hit the floor in the morning
when I first wake up, I am already hearing,
I have to do this, and this, and this today
and I can feel the stress start to come on,
my shoulders slowly hunching up until
they almost touch my ears! And, that is just
the start to my day. But daily listening to
the spiritual distinction meditation brings

those thoughts to my conscious mind and

I can then say, Slow down. I dont have
to do anything if I dont want to. I will do
my tasks today that I feel like doing as the
consequences of not doing these tasks is
well, nothing. They will still be there for me
to attend to in time. I notice my shoulders
hunched up and immediately pull them
back down.

Be as one

By Rev. Deborah Phelps

ow can one compete against itself? Thats impossible!

Theres no reason for competition because we have
everything and we are everything. In reality, we cannot
compete. We are all one. But even though competition is the way
of the world, I dont need to compete by identifying myself by my
work and handing out my credentials as soon as I meet someone.
When ego meets ego, the conversation goes something like this:
Ive got this much experience. Ive got this, Ive got that. Ive got
the proof that Im better than you. Why do we do this? Because
were not at peace with who we are. We dont believe that we have
everything and know everything. So in our ego insecurity, we
have to draw attention to our accomplishments and qualifications.
Now, if youre looking for a job, its appropriate to give your resume
and talk about your accomplishments.
We seem to be in competition with each other for Gods favor
(or by whatever name you use) because we believe we lost his favor
when we seemed to separate from him. That conflict is reflected in
the world first in our competition with our siblings for our parents
love. Later we compete with our co-workers for the bosss approval.
We compete in the marketplace to ensure our employment. Or
we compete in sports so we can be the best. Or we compete in
school. And on and on. Whatever the venue, we believe weve got
to compete and to win. Weve got to be superior. Thats not to say
we shouldnt participate in competitive sports or excel at our work
or bake delicious cookies. What we need to do is be aware of whats
going on in our minds. Are we doing this because we feel the need
to build ourselves up? To be better? To be superior and better and
grab the goodies first? If thats our purpose, it will keep us separate
and alone. Our competition with others is keeping us from God.
I took a yoga class, and we were specifically instructed not to
compare ourselves with others, in fact not even to look at our classmates. We were told to listen to our own bodies. But, you know,
compare and contrast is the egos favorite board game. Pretty soon I
found myself checking out my fellow students, anyway. In the downward dog pose, I peeked to see if others could get further down than
me. Consider activities where we keep score. Were pleased when we
have a high score because we think weve proven ourselves. But who
26

Natures Pathways | July 2014

are we really trying to impress? Who are we really trying to be better

than? The very one we originally believed we were in competition
with (competition to the death, no less), God himself.
Were also competing so we can maintain our individual separation. Ive got to stay in my lane. Youre in your lane. Youre doing your
thing; Im doing mine. Im doing my tennis or swimming. Im doing
my life. Youre doing your life. Im trying to be better than you. We do
this all the time in one way or another. Competition can be subtle or
overt, but its still competition. I can compete even in the spiritual life.
I might be afraid that someone else will awaken sooner than I will.
When we say God is and then cease to speak it is because there
is nothing else but the peace of that oneness. But right here and now
in the world, our ultimate union starts with seeing our equality with
our brothers and sisters as one. Our relationships in the world are
our classroom where we can learn our union with the divine. Our
goal is to join with them and realize our oneness. But it takes time
to lessen our fear sufficiently so we can step into that oneness, and
thats why weve been given time. In that way, time is our friend.
Thats it. Were one. Come to that truth with empty hands,
without all thoughts of what you have ever learned before and put
aside all images you have made about yourself, your brothers and
sisters, and our source. Let all that go so wisdom can replace it
with truth. As we learn to look upon our brother as our equal, we
can ask the divine to help us see our brother through the eyes of
truth, not judgment. Wisdom will not fail to help and teach.
You who are not at war must look for brothers and recognize all
whom you see as brothers, because only equals are at peace He will
not leave you comfortless, nor fail to send His angels down to answer
you in His Own Name.

SELF-ACCEPTANCE AND APPROVAL continued from page 25

As we grow on this Earth plane, we learn negative emotions and

our ego mind fights change because it wants to be in control. Our
ego mind represses and resists letting those negative emotions
surface as it tries to protect us from hurt and pain. But guess what?
You have already felt the pain of what life has thrown your way
and you lived through it. But you need to bring up those negative
emotions to become conscious of them so you can let them go.
There are clinical exercises that can help you to do this quickly and
you will reap the benefits.
When we continue to repress our emotions into our unconsciousness, then at times, usually when we least expect it, we may
act up, becoming angry and feeling pain and have no idea why.
We walk around asking ourselves, Why is this happening to me
again? And the cycle keeps on going, around and around and
around to a never-ending life of wondering. Wondering if our life
can get better, if you will ever heal from the pain you felt long ago,
if, if, if and, we are stuck with a life we created with our negative
thoughts and repressed feelings.
Working with a spiritual holistic life coach helps you address
each feeling that has been repressed, forgiving yourself and
reaping the benefits of healing those feelings so they no longer
keep getting repressed. Maybe you dont want to bring up that
pain. Coaching will hold your hand and help you to realize the
benefit of bringing up those repressed feelings one more time so
you are not stuck for the remainder of your life.
When we forgive ourselves and others, then our life can move
on. Forgiveness does not mean that we condone the action. Forgiving someone else is not about that person, but about us. Forgiveness is what sets us free.
At the core of all human suffering is spiritual poverty. We are
here to learn and when we make a mistake, we need to recognize that mistake as a part of our learning process and not beat
ourselves up over it. Most of us beat ourselves up as we have not
learned the advanced life skills that help us to unconditionally love
ourselves. Our greatest challenge in life is to understand our true
self, which is spirit, a part of God.
Most of us spend our life finding ourselves. But, life should be
about creating our self the way we want to be.
As quoted in The HuMan Handbook, The secret of happiness
is to want what you already have!
Next month, we will be learning about self-parenting. How we
can take charge of our life and be our own best friend. Life isnt
about expecting someone else to make us happy, but about our
own happiness that comes from within.

Finding purpose
and discovering
your strengths
Struggling to find
your purpose?

By Ron Urban

re you missing in action and a prisoner of your own

world? Do you find yourself saying, No, nothing is new;
Im doing the same old thing? The idea of a life review in
your golden years makes you shudder. Your bucket list of things
to do or experience seems to be decades away or even out of sight.
Having been there for what seems to be forever, I can relate and
offer hindsight and encouragement. First things first:
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Are you ready to say you are bored,
restless, dissatisfied, unhappy or even depressed? Maybe you can
relate to all of these. It is not a sign of weakness or an admission of
selfishness to know yourself and identify the problem. In fact, its
healthy, necessary and part of the process. Take inventory and be
honest. If you need reassurance you are not alone, I recommend a
trip to Barnes and Noble. You will discover online communities,
a plethora of motivational and inspirational material, and real
people wearing their discontentment on their sleeves, trying to
find their purpose or discover their happiness. You are not alone.
ASSESSMENT: The Socrates quote, Know thyself, is key. Before
finding your purpose, you must discover your strengths. You might
be saying, I dont have any. I think I was last in line and they ran out.
Pop! I just broke your bubble of self-blindness. Everyone has them,
even the most self-depreciating. Trust me, I thought I was the last
person in line years back and now Im blogging about it!

How to discover your strengths

Self-discovery is a never-ending process and a place of excitement

and self-worth. If someone was to ask, What makes you unique
and different from everyone else? what would you say? If you
stare blankly or skirt around the question, you are missing one of
the best opportunities in your lifetime. Get acquainted with yourself and be confident that you are a unique piece of human art. You
are wonderfully made and a one of a kind! Problems and all. How
do you discover your strengths? I will highlight my experience.
Ask yourself, What excites me? It will provide key information as to what engages you.
28

Natures Pathways | July 2014

What skills, knowledge or experience do you have? There is

great chance that your strengths are correlated!

Open your ears and recall positive comments that others say

about you. Dont shrug them off. Modesty can filter out what
you need to hear.
Know your accomplishments and listen to your dreams. They
are speaking to you to unlock your potential and unleash
your passions in life.
Realize that confidence is a key indicator of a strength. What,
when and why did you last experience an event or opportunity that you and others took notice of?

Find your strengths and discover your purpose

I would highly recommend a few other tools in your process of

self-discovery. Knowing your personality type can be quite useful
to map out and strategize a plan to move forward in finding your
unique path to purposeful living.
Visit Human Metrics to take an online quiz to give you a reference point of your personality type. Also, purchase Tom Raths book
StrengthsFinder 2.0. An online assessment is included to capture
your top five strengths that set you apart from your peers. Research
and studies suggest that people who have the opportunity to use
their strengths every day are six times more likely to be highly
engaged in their jobs and three times as likely to report having an
excellent quality of life in general! Its your turn to discover what
sets you apart, sparks your passion and drives your excellence.

Save time with

fast meals

arm weather provides a great opportunity to slow down

and savor time spent having fun in the great outdoors.
But time spent away from home often leads to meals
made on the fly or last-minute jaunts to a nearby fast-food restaurant. Though last-minute meals or trips to the local burger joint
might be convenient, they are not always healthy. Fortunately,
there are other ways to eat well even when youre pressed for time.
CHOOSE FAST-COOKING FOODS. Stock the pantry with items

that will cook quickly. Fresh produce can be steamed or grilled

in only a few minutes and served alone as a vegetarian meal or
mixed with other foods for a quick entree. Seafood tends to cook
quite fast, and many seafood dishes make for a low-fat source of
healthy protein and essential fatty acids. Seafood also is lighter on
the stomach, which fits well with the smaller meals people tend to
enjoy during warm weather. Even foods that take a long time to
cook can be prepared quickly. Thick cuts of meat or poultry can be
fileted or sliced to allow them to cook faster.

COOK WITH HIGH HEAT. Instead of slow-roasting or plugging

in the slow cooker for hours on end, instant meal gratification

often means cranking up the heat. That is why grilling is such a
popular cooking method this time of year. Grilling will sear meats
and vegetables over high heat, sometimes as much as 400 to 500
F, cooking foods rapidly as a result. Select meats that do well over
high heat, such as those that are tender, because they will not
require long cooking periods to break down the fibers in the meat.
If grilling is not an option, then stir-frying is another way to cook
fast over high heat. Invest in a wok or another deep frying pan for
such meals.

HAVE PREPARED ITEMS ON STANDBY. Keep the refrigera-

tor stocked with already-washed vegetables and lettuce. Parboiled

potatoes or pasta can be mixed in with a number of different
ingredients to create a filling meal. When free time allows, develop
a plan so meals take less time to prepare. If frozen items must be
defrosted, make sure to put them in the refrigerator the day before

www.naturespathways.com

they will be cooked to begin the thawing period. Otherwise, use a

microwave to safely defrost foods rather than leaving them out on
the counter where bacteria can grow.
DONT FRET A NO-FUSS NIGHT. Not every meal has to be a

three-course delight. A fast dinner could equate to a sandwich or

salad. Breakfast foods for dinner are also quite popular and can
cook up quickly. Surprise everyone with French toast or pancakes
made savory with bits of bacon and spinach in the batter. When all
else fails, a bowl of cereal can be adequate and fast.

WHEN DINING OUT, GO HEALTHY. Sometimes takeout or a

meal out with friends or family is the perfect ending to a great day.
Restaurant food tends to pack more fat and calories into largerthan-normal portion sizes, so choose steamed or broiled foods
whenever possible. Divide larger portions among other diners.
Clear soups are better for you than cream-based soups. Try to fill
up on vegetables rather than bread served before the meal.

A monthly advice
column for your
energy system

By Tina Bensman

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something

many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy
anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life
patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving
advice of any kind.
Dear Tina,
Ive struggled with chronic pain in my joints since I was 12 years
old, and I havent gotten a clear answer as to why even though Ive
seen a variety of doctors over the years. Could there be an energetic
reason for this pain? Is there something I can do to find relief?
Pained by Pain
Dear Pained,
Oh, Im sorry. Yes. And yes! Lets start from the beginning. The
source of your pain is absolutely an energetic problem because
everything is made from energy. Yes, I said everything. Whether
the cause of the joint pain is due to a physical degeneration or an
emotional issue you are holding onto, it is all energy. Now, energy
cannot be created or destroyed; it can only change forms. This is

a scientific fact, not a bunch of metaphysical mumbo jumbo. All

energy that exists now existed a thousand years ago and will still
exist in the future. So you cannot destroy the joint pain, but you
can change the energy of the pain into something else. It can be
released into heat, water (sweat maybe) or a number of other types
of energy. Again, this is a fact of physics, not a concept that Im
making up for a quick fix.
So, you can change the form of energy, but how to do that can
be a challenge. Your own beliefs may get in the way. If you dont
believe that you can change energy, you will not be able to do so
no matter how hard you try. Your pattern of belief is blocking any
healing from taking place and that can be a hard stumbling block
to get past.
Once you get past the beliefs holding you back, there are many
ways to shift the form of energy. You can use any strong frequency
to shift the energies, like a crystal or an essential oil. That is a great
approach if it works for you. Personally, I prefer the meditation
approach. When you shift your energy through meditation, you
can access it no matter where you are or what you are doing. You
will always have yourself, but maybe the crystal you like to use isnt
by your side all the time.
To learn a ton of energy healing techniques, The Chakra House
offers e-Courses so you can advance your natural intuitive abilities
at your own pace. Check out www.thechakrahouse.com for more
information.
Tina, a Madison intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong
student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and
continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many
modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts.
Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with
energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their
abilities if they realize their potential.

Relaxation
techniques
to calm your
nerves

ince 2007, the American Psychological Association has

commissioned an annual nationwide survey to examine the
state of stress across the United States and understand its
impact. The 2013 survey found that people continue to experience
what they feel are unhealthy stress levels, with 42 percent of adult
respondents reporting that their stress levels have increased over
the past five years. In addition, 44 percent of survey respondents
feel they arent doing enough to manage their stress, painting a
potentially troubling future for people who cannot find better and
healthier ways to manage their stress.
The picture is none the rosier in Canada, where data from the
2012 Canadian Community Health Survey revealed that nearly
23 percent of Canadians aged 15 and older reported that most
days were quite a bit or extremely stressful. While those figures
marked a slight improvement from the previous years survey,
its apparent that stress is still a considerable concern for people
throughout both the United States and Canada.
Though many people unfortunately regard stress as an inevitable side effect of adulthood, its important that men, women and
even children avoid characterizing stress as simply a byproduct
of a difficult and/or successful life and career. Even momentary
stress, often referred to as acute stress, like the kind that appears
when stuck in a traffic jam, can have a potentially devastating
impact on overall health. According to the American Institute of
Stress, acute stress causes an increase in heart rate and stronger
contractions of the heart muscle, and some medical professionals
have suggested there is a link between repeated episodes of acute
stress and heart attack.
Regular use of relaxation techniques to reduce stress can help
to counteract the effects of long-term stress, which the National
Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes can
contribute to depression, digestive disorders, headaches, high
www.naturespathways.com

blood pressure, and insomnia. While its always best for anyone,
and especially those people with heart disease, epilepsy, certain
psychiatric conditions or a history of abuse or trauma, to consult
their health care provider before attempting to address their stress
on their own, the following are two popular relaxation techniques
that may help relieve stress in a healthy way.

Meditation

There are many types of meditation, but in general people who

meditate employ certain techniques when meditating. These techniques may include maintaining a specific posture or finding a
quiet, distraction-free location to meditate. Many practitioners
of meditation choose to recite a positive mantra that they repeat
throughout their session. While many people question the effectiveness of meditation, research has suggested that routine meditation sessions can alter the brains neural pathways and make a
person more capable of combatting stress.

Yoga

Yoga has grown increasingly popular in recent years, and much of

that can be traced to the multitude of health benefits that have been
linked to this typically low-impact practice of the mind and body.
The NCCAM notes that studies have suggested yoga is effective at
lowering heart rate and blood pressure and can even relieve anxiety
and depression. Those are beneficial side effects for sufferers of stress,
which over time can contribute to high blood pressure and arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) and even cause people to worry too much
about minor things or suspect bad things are about to happen.
More information about stress and coping techniques is available at www.apa.org.

Discover
secondhand
shopping and the
ideal wardrobe

By Lindsay Leno

ombining essential fashion pieces that are high quality

but not necessarily expensive with trendy items found
at thrift venues can create the ideal wardrobe. Shopping
secondhand is gaining momentum for economical and environmental reasons alike. Secondhand shopping is on the rise and its
the perfect way to pair timeless pieces with of-the-moment trends
to get the look of high-end retailers.
Secondhand shopping is rising in popularity. According to
an article on CNN.com, Goodwill Industries had an 84 percent
increase in revenue from the sale of donated goods from 2007 to
2012. This could be due to the recession and the consumer wanting
to save money when times are tight, not to mention the thrill of
the hunt while thrift shopping.
If youve shied away from wearing used goods in the past, now is
the time to reconsider. Many of the items found within these venues
are gently used, clean, high quality and a fraction of the cost of new
items. In addition, shopping secondhand helps the environment in
countless ways by keeping items out of landfills while cutting down
on the demand for new items that wreck havoc on our resources.
Secondhand shopping includes scoping out thrift stores, garage
sales, online venues such as Craigslist, estate sales, vintage stores,
consignment shops and even attending borrowing or swapping
events. Its a good idea before setting out on your secondhand
excursion to first analyze your closet, followed by choosing one
or two secondhand stores or venues. It can get overwhelming to
set out to a thrift store without understanding what you want or
where to find the perfect shopping experience.
The weather is warm and perfect for editing your closet. Look
through everything you own and bag up old or unwanted items.
Next, take stock of your favorite items. If you have an item or two
that you love because of shape, color, or print, use those items as
inspiration while out shopping. Take special note of classic items
in your closet such as tall boots, ballet flats, the little black dress,
black blazer, straight-leg jeans and a crisp white shirt. If you have
some or all of these items, you can easily build an awesome wardrobe around them. If you dont have some of these items, write
down what you need as a reference for when youre out shopping.

32

Natures Pathways | July 2014

Once your closet is edited and you have a basic list of wants
and needs, next youll have to decide where to go shopping. If you
love to be outside, consider a day of visiting garage or estate sales.
Choose one neighborhood or section of town to concentrate on,
or find a listing in your local paper. This will help you stay focused.
If you want to get out of the heat and visit secondhand stores,
choose a couple that are within the same section of town.
Whether youre hopping from one garage sale to the next or
visiting your favorite local thrift joint, be sure to bring small bills
or even a few dollars in change for easy transactions. This is the
point where the fun begins. Its all about the hunt, and approaching your shopping experience this way will allow you to build
your ideal wardrobe. Keep an eye peeled for rich fabrics that indicate high quality, or specially designed tags that may indicate a
high-end design. Real leather bags and shoes are not only high
quality but last longer than synthetics and can be found for a fraction of the cost than when bought brand new. Although its tempting to purchase items just because they look expensive, be sure
that you will indeed bring it home and wear it. By incorporating
secondhand shopping into your life youll be able to have your
ideal wardrobe while spending less and having a blast doing it.
Creating a wardrobe by incorporating secondhand items is rewarding and saves money all while contributing to a more sustained lifestyle. Taking a methodical approach to create a specific wardrobe will
ensure that you keep an edited closet with items that come with a story.
Be a part of the secondhand revolution and start thrifting today!

How to get
a better
nights sleep

hen it is 3 a.m. and you are pacing the

halls of your dark and quiet house while
everyone else is sleeping soundly in their
beds, it may seem like you are the only person in the
entire world who is not getting some much-needed
shut-eye. However, many people struggle to get a
good nights sleep.
Information from the National Sleep Foundation,
Better Sleep Council, Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, and several other organizations indicate that between
20 and 40 percent of the U.S. population experiences insomnia.
Many of the people suffering from insomnia have family histories
of the condition or are also experiencing depression. Insomnia
rates are higher for people over the age of 60, and women are twice
as likely to suffer from insomnia than men.
Although how much sleep a person requires varies from
individual to individual, the general consensus is that adults
should receive between seven and eight hours of sleep per
night to feel rested.
The Institute of Medicine estimates that hundreds of billions of
dollars are spent annually on medical costs that are directly related
to sleep disorders, while statistics from the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration indicate that 100,000 vehicle accidents occur annually as a result of drowsy drivers. These figures
underscore the importance of getting a good nights rest and
understanding how to treat insomnia in order to do so.
Insomnia may be a byproduct of a physical condition. A person
dealing with side effects of certain medications, chronic pain, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and a bevy of other conditions
may find it difficult to sleep at night. Identifying the cause of the
insomnia can make it easier to treat, so those who cant sleep at
night may have an undiagnosed condition that is affecting their
ability to fall asleep.
Exercise can help promote better sleep habits. A workout will tire
you out, increase feel-good endorphins throughout the body and
raise body temperature. As the body recovers from the workout, it

Crack the
prosperity
code

By Dan Conlon

f a new level of personal prosperity is what you seek, starting a home-based business might be the perfect solution. For
example, a business driven by the anti-aging, health and wellness trend could provide significant potential to help others and
yourself to a better life.
When you discover the real value of being in business for yourself, the doors to real personal and financial prosperity open. The
good news is today it is easier to start and grow a successful business than ever before. Advancements in technology and social
networking allow us to connect with like-minded individuals
(potential customers and markets) all over the world, providing
unprecedented opportunities for growth in a business one you
can easily run from the comfort of your home.

Temporary income vs. permanent income

Traditional jobs and professions, even owning a small business,

can create significant barriers to realizing your true economic
potential and living the abundant and prosperous life you desire.
Let me explain: When you earn your income as an hourly or
salaried employee, you are exchanging time for money. Time is a

limited resource. Renting these hours of your life to someone else

limits earning potential. Even if you are a professional, an accountant, dentist, doctor, etc., you are exchanging time for money.
Dependence on a limited resource like time may allow
for making a good living, but falls short of creating prosperity. Temporary income comes from this exchange; permanent
income comes from leverage and the systems found in the right
home-based business. In other words, if you open one store or
location, you have a job; when you open multiple locations, you
enjoy leverage.
Millions around the world are turning to home-based businesses every year. Business ownership changes the equation in
your favor. Profits are better than wages. Because of the low startup
costs and high upside potential, one can engage in business at
their own pace, learn, grow and succeed. You can start part time
and expand. Home-based business professionals are enjoying the
benefits of big business earnings and leverage without the risks
associated with conventional small businesses.
Leverage is one of the most important business strategies one
must master along the journey to greater prosperity. Becoming

HOW TO GET A BETTER NIGHTS SLEEP continued from page 33

may feel sated and you can drift off to sleep more easily. Just do
not work out too late. Aim to complete a workout two to three
hours before planning on going to sleep so your body is not still
amped up when your head hits the pillow.
Establish a regular sleep schedule. Humans are creatures of
routine, and training the body to recognize when it is time to
wake up and when its time to go to sleep can make it easier to
enjoy a good nights rest. Stick to a consistent schedule as much
as possible -- even on the weekends. It isnt possible to make up
for lost sleep, so pull yourself out of bed at the same time in the
morning, even if you didnt get a good nights rest. Over time
you will condition yourself to accept certain times for sleeping
and waking.
The National Sleep Foundation advises avoiding heavy meals,
caffeine and nicotine before bed. Each of these things can rev up
the body and make it difficult to settle down.
On the surface, a cocktail may seem like a good way to unwind
and relax. Although a drink or two may help many people fall
asleep, it will not produce the deep sleep necessary to recharge
the body. When the effects of the alcohol wear off after a few
hours, your sleep is likely to be interrupted. In addition, relying
on alcohol as a sleep remedy can lead to dependence and further
health problems.
Get up and accept a poor nights sleep rather than tossing and
turning. It can be easy to associate the bed with wakefulness
and frustration if you stay in bed and watch the clock. Getting
up and reading or listening to relaxing music can help distract
the mind and relax the body. Avoid working on the computer
or watching television. Bright light can reduce the production
of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, resulting in further
difficulty settling down.
Thanks to their reproductive hormones, women undergo
more sleep changes and challenges than men. Afterward, being
woken by children or worrying about them can lead to sleepless
nights. Many women experience trouble sleeping during menopause. Different therapies may be needed to figure out the solution for a restful nights sleep.
Individuals can try natural remedies to induce sleep or stay
asleep. In addition to good sleep hygiene and maintaining a
regular sleep schedule, there are a number of herbs that can relax
the body. Chamomile tea has soothing properties, and drinking chamomile tea before bed can be an effective sleep strategy.
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the
time of Ancient Greece and Rome, and it can reduce anxiety
and promote sleep. Melatonin supplements are produced from
plant sources and can induce sleep when taken in the right
amounts. Speak with a doctor about possible remedies to find a
sleep system that works for you.
Insomnia is a more common problem than many people
may think. Recognizing insomnia as a problem and seeking
treatment can help many people get on the road to a more
restful nights sleep.

Chasteberry
Vitex agnus-castus

hasteberry (also known as chaste-tree berry, vitex or

monks pepper) is the fruit of the chaste tree, a small
shrub-like tree native to central Asia and the Mediterranean region. The name is thought to come from a belief that the
plant promoted chastity it is reported that monks in the Middle
Ages used chasteberry to decrease sexual desire.
Chasteberry has been used for thousands of years, mostly by women
to ease menstrual problems and to stimulate the production of breast
milk. Currently, chasteberry is still used as a folk or traditional remedy
for menstrual problems, such as premenstrual syndrome, as well as for
symptoms of menopause, some types of infertility and acne.
The dried ripe chasteberry is used to prepare liquid extracts or
solid extracts that are put into capsules and tablets.

What the science says

A few studies of chasteberry for premenstrual syndrome have

found a benefit. However, most of these studies were not well
designed, so firm conclusions cannot be drawn.
Small studies suggest that chasteberry may help with breast
pain and some types of infertility, but there is not enough reliable

THE ORGANIZERS

scientific evidence to determine whether chasteberry has any

effect on these conditions.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has funded studies on chasteberry. Projects have explored
how chasteberry works in the body and how it might affect symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Side effects and cautions

Chasteberry has not been associated with serious side effects;

however, it can cause gastrointestinal problems, acne-like rashes
and dizziness.
Chasteberry might affect certain hormone levels. Women
who are pregnant or taking birth control pills or who have a
hormone-sensitive condition (such as breast cancer) should not
use chasteberry.
Because chasteberry may affect the dopamine system in the
brain, people taking dopamine-related medications, such as
certain antipsychotic drugs and Parkinsons disease medications,
should avoid using chasteberry.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to
Talk campaign.

Too much
stuff dragging
you down?
Save time, money and energy
by getting organized

By Jeanine Hanson

re you struggling with too much stuff? Do you feel so

overwhelmed you just dont know where to begin? Is
tending to your belongings keeping you from experiencing your best life?
The true cost of owning too many things is almost incalculable. Its
not just the original price paid for those things, but the cost of maintaining them: the time lost searching for items, the money wasted
repurchasing misplaced articles, and the energy spent keeping
everything clean, accessible and displayed or stored. Perhaps you
have even resorted to paying monthly for off-site-storage.
Would your life change for the better without the responsibility of caring for all of that stuff? If you said yes, here are some tips
to get you started:
1. CHOOSE YOUR TASK. Start with something small: a junk
drawer or a bathroom cabinet. (You can move on to larger
projects as you get the hang of it.) Write out your goal and
post it. This may seem unnecessary, but a reminder of where
you are headed will help you stay on task.
2. ARM YOURSELF. Gather a large trash can, large recycling bin,
large shred container, and boxes for donation and things to give
away. I emphasize large, because when any of your containers
are filled, you will feel you are finished. (Empty containers
almost ask to be filled!)
3. DO A QUICK SORT. Make quick decisions about which
things stay and which things go. Dont get lost in reading,
pondering or thinking about your emotional attachment to
each and every item; just sort what you can. If you arent sure,
put it in the keep pile for now. You will have a chance to re-sort
these items later. It is far too difficult to try to go from the
initial project to a perfect finish in one pass. This quick sort
is to lighten your load, leaving you with only the important
items to organize. Try setting a kitchen timer for 20 minutes as
a reminder to check your progress and move quickly.
4. CLEAR OUT THE EXCESS. Every time you finish a sorting
session, remove all of the trash, recycling and donations from

www.naturespathways.com

the room. Better yet, get them out of the house this will
help you see the progress. (Bonus: Your containers are now
ready to be refilled, keeping your project moving forward!)
5. FRESHEN UP THE SPACE. Wipe out or vacuum the drawer
or the cabinet. For more impact, add a new drawer liner or
fresh shelf paper.
6. ORGANIZE WHAT IS LEFT. Next, sort the items you have
chosen to keep. Group like things together, and decide where
they will live. Use any small containers you have on hand
to corral small items. (Purchase new organizing containers
later. Often we buy pretty boxes for organizing before we do
our sorting, and these containers just turn out to be more
clutter as we try to make our stuff accommodate them
instead of the other way around.)
7. TEAR OUT THIS PAGE AND SAVE IT. You never know
when the urge to purge and organize may strike!

Igniting a
renewa l of

body and spirit

Renu Massage Therapy & Day Spa

offers an environment like no other
By Rebecca Bentz

Theyre rare: those individuals who seem

to burn with a passion for what they do
people fueled by a fire within. Heidi Aschenbrenner is one of them, and though she
always had that fire, it took a change of
scenery and a bit of serendipity for her to
find the perfect outlet for her passion.
As a licensed bodywork professional
and owner of Renu Massage Therapy &
Day Spa, Aschenbrenner has forged her
path through the spirit of renewal: renewal
in more ways than one.

FIRED UP ABOUT HEALTH

The body remembers.
Long after the pain of trauma or overuse
fades, our muscles and tissues hold on to
the memory of an injury. Quite often, its only
through massage or other forms of bodywork that our bodies are able to let go. This
knowledge, coupled with Eastern healing
philosophies, is precisely what makes
Renus approach to wellness so effective.
The spa offers a wide array of massage
types (including therapeutic, prenatal,
aromatherapy, fibromyalgia-focused, and
more), as well as hot stone therapy, a
sauna, reiki with acupressure, foot detox
and other services, including the unsung
38

Natures Pathways | July 2014

hero of bodywork: cupping therapy.

Theres truly something for every wellness
need. Yet though bodywork techniques
like these are important components
to pain relief and therapeutic recovery,
Aschenbrenner explains that regular
bodywork, like massage, is also an important step in maintaining overall health.
We do maintenance on our car, on our
teeth, she points out, but when it comes
to our muscles, we expect them to work
for years and years and years without
doing anything to them and we put
them through a lot.
Repetitive motions throughout the
workday, weightlifting and cardio at the
gym, doing work around the house and
yard: The demands on our muscles are
seemingly never-ending. Our body does
its best to dutifully respond until it cant
anymore.
To deal with the pain, we might use
ice or heat, pop a pain reliever, and rest
up for a while. Some of us might venture
to the chiropractor to get an adjustment. But Aschenbrenner points out that
muscles typically dont snap back to
proper function with one or sometimes
multiple chiropractic visits. They might

even pull the corrected subluxation back

into misalignment.
If a person wants lasting relief, he or she
needs to focus on the soft tissue before
making structural changes, Aschenbrenner explains, as the two go hand in
hand. Massage is only going to make
that healing better, faster and more
complete.
But Aschenbrenner is quick to point out
that individuals neednt be suffering to
reap the benefits of bodywork.
Even if youre not having any chronic
pain, its just a good maintenance practice to do to help your muscles come
back to a healthy state, she explains.
So often, pain originates from things the
muscles are doing that people arent
even aware of.
In fact, most individuals have muscles
that are too constricted in one place,
which overstretches other muscles
through the bodys attempt to compensate; tight pectorals lead to overly long
upper back muscles, for example, while
the lower backs muscles often step in to
compensate for a variety of other weak
muscles. This affects a multitude of things,
ranging from simple posture to whether
www.naturespathways.com

a person is more likely to suffer injuries

performing common tasks.
When the muscles have been in an
incorrect state for so long, they need
retraining. Massage and other bodywork techniques help cleanse the bodys
unnatural restrictions, lighting the way for
muscles to remember their proper form.

STOKING A SENSE
OF WELL-BEING
Every massage therapist enjoys making
people feel good, Aschenbrenner says.
And the staff at Renu is no different. Where
they do diverge from standard massage
businesses is their focus on the Eastern
medicines concept of mind-body-spirit
interconnectivity. All three play a part in a
persons health.
One of the things Ive learned over
the years is how much of what we think
we have let go and put behind us actually stays with us in our bodies in various
ways: in our tissues, in our emotions, in
our spirits, Aschenbrenner says. (Editors
note: If youd like to learn more about
how massage and other techniques
can help individuals process strong feelings, flip to page 18 for Aschenbrenners
article, Emotions and bodywork: We are
connected beings.)
Aschenbrenner and her staff help individuals recognize the importance bodywork plays in balancing the mind-bodyspirit triad. All of Renus staff is trained in
the Eastern approach. In fact, Aschenbrenner and every individual shes hired
have trained locally at the East-West
Healing Arts Institute.
I felt drawn to that field of study,
Aschenbrenner explains. This is what I
wanted to make my practice about and
I do think thats what makes us different
from a lot of other massage places.
Thanks to this education, Renu is able to
offer a wide range of specialized services,
including cupping therapy.
Healers throughout China and elsewhere in the world have used traditional
Chinese medicine cupping therapy
for thousands of years. Cupping first
appeared in the United States only a
few decades ago, however. In this technique, a trained bodywork professional
uses glass cups to draw out toxins and
unhealthy tissue.
www.naturespathways.com

People are often impressed with

the cupping therapy and how long its
benefits can last, Aschenbrenner says.
Its usually much more effective than
just traditional massage at really getting
results quickly and getting permanent
changes to happen within the body.
Cupping helps the body fuel faster
tissue healing. Its Aschenbrenners favorite treatment modality: perhaps because
shes no stranger to the concept of
renewal.

A PHOENIX RISES
Aschenbrenner doesnt only rejuvenate
her clients bodies, shes reinvented an
entire business and her very mission in life.
Growing up, I never really felt like I
belonged in South California, Aschenbrenner admits. My sister lived in Madison
for a while and the first time I visited, I just
felt like this is where I was supposed to be.
Feeling unfulfilled in her public accounting career in California, Aschenbrenner
longed for a simpler life one where she
could pursue her passion and get a fresh
start. Thats when she moved to Madison.
It wasnt all smooth sailing, though: I
started with a plan and a job and that
kind of all fell through, she explains. I just
decided to come on my own and see
how things unfold and thats kind of how I
ended up in massage, as well.
Massage had helped Aschenbrenner
personally with injuries shes had over the
years and she had always felt a pull toward
Eastern healing philosophies. Massage
school seemed to be the perfect answer.

When most people think

of bodywork, they think of
massage and relaxation.
But its also a means for
therapeutic healing and
all-around wellness. Contact
Renu today to learn how
their approach to massage
and spa services can fuel
your well-being. Call or book
your appointment online!

I loved it. I loved everything I was learning, she says. It opened this whole world
of healing that I was just barely scratching the surface of before.
Just as Aschenbrenner was finishing up
her schooling, fate stepped in and she
learned of a massage business for sale.
One thing led to another and she ended
up buying Renu right around the time she
was graduating from massage school.
The business needed Aschenbrenner.
Launching a new website, redesigning
the physical space, and recruiting an
entirely new staff were just some of the
items she needed to tackle within the first
few months.
There were some moments where I
wondered, What have I gotten myself
into? But I was already committed and
in it, and I didnt doubt any of the decisions I had made up to that point, she
explains. I thought, Im going to trust my
instinct. Im going to trust that ultimately
this is going to pan out to be something
good, but its going to take a lot of work
and time.
So Aschenbrenner stuck with it and
the results made it all worthwhile. Today,
Renu boasts a talented, well-educated
staff and offers a welcoming, therapeutic environment for clients bodies, minds
and spirits.
In everyday work I feel a sense of pride,
Aschenbrenner says. I get most excited
when its somebody who has been in pain
for a while because I know Im going to
help them feel better. Thats why Im doing
it and thats what I love the most.

Healing
through horse

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
and Holistic Psychotherapist

The horse holds us to what is present and to what is beautiful.

When we take the time to see through his eyes it is in the details we
find new awareness and ultimately renewal. Charlotte Angin

quine assisted psychotherapy (EAP) is a powerful and effective therapeutic experiential process for healing. It is through
the hands-on approach that one experiences emotional
growth, learning and healing. Horses naturally carry qualities of
love, peace, calm, grace, gentleness, hope, magic and mystery. Just
observe a horse grazing in a pasture and it easily brings one to a
place of peace, and a true sense of being one with the universe.
Being in the presence of a horse reconnects and awakens us to spirit.
The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but dont
tell you what to see.
Author unknown
The observation of the horses behavior and how the horse may or
may not react to you helps in recognizing and understanding how
you struggle and what keeps you feeling stuck in your life.
The experiential processes are about being as well as an active
approach of doing and experiencing. When people are able to
do, they learn from the experience and are, therefore, active in their
own healing process. It is through the experiencing of the active
session work, such as in EAP, that the individual is able to discover
his or her own solutions that facilitate the change, which is used
then to empower the individual. This experiential process increases
ones present awareness to feelings, perceptions, thoughts and bodily
sensations: and all are in-the-moment-experiences. Such processes
can accelerate access to the emotional side and the subconscious,
creating more-lasting results. Through EAP, the psychotherapist
and the horse are the guides that help facilitate the healing process.
This therapy does not include riding, only ground work.
When I look into the eyes of an animal, I do not see an animal, I see
a living being. I see a friend. I feel a soul.
A.D.Williams

present. Horses do not have an agenda. Horses have a natural way

of teaching us how to be mindful, how to be in a state of stillness
and how to live in the now. Horses naturally are able to live in spirit
and do not operate out of ego. Most of all, horses give us immediate and honest feedback as they are always communicating, which
can show us many things about not only ourselves, but how we
show up in our life, whether it is through our family, friends or
work. Through this process, they then are able to teach awareness,
boundaries, respect, patience, balance and emotional regulation.
Horses dont come with labels, opinions, identities, beliefs
or judgments about you. So when clients are in the presence of
horses, they seem to become authentically vulnerable and speak
their truth. Horses always act in the way they really are feeling,
but as people, we tend to hide our true feelings. Horses have an
innate ability to sense energy and therefore are able to sense us
energetically. They then react to that energy and provide excellent
feedback as to how we approach our life. It is impossible to hide
your authentic self from a horse.
This approach uses metaphors and self-awareness techniques
to assist individuals in figuring out how to shift out of old
patterning, beliefs, attitudes and habits that have been blocking
them from living a full life.

An example of the experiential process

Helping an individual step into their power energetically comes

from in the body in the solar plexus. Co-facilitating this with a
horse takes it to a much deeper level. Individuals recognize that if
they change something about themselves, such as their energy, the
horse will respond differently. This can be a life-altering experience that they can then take with them.

The many
benefits
of yoga

n its 2012 Yoga in America study, Yoga Journal found that

more than 20 million Americans practiced yoga, a nearly 30
percent increase from 2008, when the magazine conducted
its previous study. Among the millions of yoga practitioners
surveyed, roughly 82 percent were women. While those statistics
figure to change as more and more people, men and women alike,
turn to yoga, its clear that women, at least in the western hemisphere, are blazing the yoga trail.
Many women turn to yoga because they recognize the value of
strength training but are uncomfortable or nervous about lifting
weights. The various poses performed in yoga can increase muscle
strength and tone, providing similar benefits to weightlifting
without forcing women to spend time among men in the weight
room. But yoga does more than improve strength and muscle
tone. The following are a few additional benefits of yoga, some of
which may surprise even the most devoted of practitioners.
IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY: Some people are intimidated by

yoga because they feel their bodies simply arent flexible enough
to perform many of the poses typical of the average yoga class.
While beginners may find the poses difficult, they are designed
to safely stretch muscles. Over time, the poses may release lactic
acid that builds up in muscles, and that lactic acid often contributes to fatigue, pain, stiffness, and tension. This release leads to
improved flexibility, and like many physical activities, yoga poses
become easier to perform as practitioners bodies become more
accustomed to them.
INCREASED RANGE OF MOTION: Joint pain does not discrim-

inate based on age or gender, and many sufferers of joint pain find
it debilitating at times and at least mildly painful most of the time.
But yoga can improve lubrication in the joints, increasing ones
range of motion as a result. That makes it easier for some people to
live with joint pain, which may even subside among practitioners
who fully commit to yoga.

increases the likelihood that a person will stand straight and tall,
an improvement in posture that many nonpractitioners would
enthusiastically embrace.
REDUCED STRESS LEVELS: Yoga practitioners often tout the

effect that yogahas on their stress levels. Certain styles of yoga

employ deep breathing techniques that force the mind to focus
on breathing, and that focus has a calming effect, reducing stress
as a result. Other yoga styles may employ meditative practices
that aim to clear the mind of distractions that contribute to stress.
Novices may be skeptical and question the efficacy of such techniques, but long-time practitioners of yoga find its effect on stress
levels to be a hidden benefit of the practice. In addition, research
has suggested that yoga may result in an increase of hormones
associated with relaxation.

HEART HEALTH: People with a personal or family history of

heart disease may be surprised to learn that yoga has been shown
to have a positive effect on those dealing with heart disease. Yoga
slows the rate at which the heart beats, which helps alleviate high
blood pressure and helps those people with heart disease and
lowers their risk of stroke. Yoga also has been linked to lower
cholesterol and a healthier immune system.

each pose, and this strengthens the bodys core. A stronger core

Broth, stock
and bone
broth: Whats
the difference?

By Chloe Paul

ver wonder why we eat chicken noodle soup when were

sick? Its because homemade soup made from bones is so
beneficial it can cure even the most ill people. Often we
find ourselves with leftover bones after cooking a hardy meal of
chicken, beef or fish. Many people are unaware that those bones
contain huge amount of minerals and amino acids that make
bones superfoods. Rather than throwing away those bones, we
can use them to make delicious and nutritious soups, gravies and
sauces that are packed with healthy nutrients.
There are three ways to cook bones. First is by making a broth.
It is often made using meat with a small amount of bones, and is
cooked for the least amount of time at 45 minutes to two hours.
It also has a light flavor. Next is stock, which uses mainly bones
and is cooked for about three hours. The bones are usually pan
roasted for flavor before going into a pot to simmer. Stock has
many minerals and gelatin, but will be more liquidated than bone
broth. Last is the bone broth. As a general rule, the longer you
simmer the bones, the more nutrients you can extract from them.
This is why bone broth is cooked for over 24 hours. The result is
very thick and gelatinous and contains many healthy minerals and
amino acids, according to Nourished Kitchen.
The history of bone broth, as we know it, started in France by
physician Dr. Denis Papin in the 1600s. He invented a machine
that could cook bones and extract the gelatin. Since then, bone
broth has had a long history of curing disease and promoting good
health. Bouillon cubes made from bone broth were used to treat
patients who were dying from lack of nutrition during the siege of
Paris in the late 1800s. The French had found that the gelatin from
bone broth was useful in the treatment of a long list of diseases
including peptic ulcers, tuberculosis, diabetes, muscle diseases,
infectious diseases, jaundice and cancer, according to Broth is
Beautiful, by The Weston A. Price Foundation. Bone broth is
super rich in amino acids such as aginine, glycine and proline.
Glycine is a detoxifier. It also supports healthy digestion, which
is why many cultures used it in babies milk to reduce digestion
www.naturespathways.com

issues. Proline, as well as the gelatin, promote healthy skin. It also

helps joints and bones and is therefore used to treat arthritis. Bone
broth isnt considered a complete protein, but when paired with
meat, it uses the protein more effectively, absorbing more of it into
your body. Therefore, you dont need to eat as much meat to have
the same amount of protein in your diet.
Bone broth was a staple food consumed at nearly every meal
in many countries until the 1950s when research geared toward
looking for a meat substitute. They used something called monosodium glutamate or MSG, which had been created in Japan to
enhance their flavors. A synthetic meat substitute meant that fast
food restaurants and big food industries could make sauces and
soups that were cheap and could last longer without going bad.
However, MSG does not contain all the health benefits found
in homemade bone broth. In fact, MSG is incredibly harmful.
Numerous studies on mice have shown MSG can cause blindness,
obesity, depletion of the brain and infertility.
Theres really no downside to bone broth. It is healthy for us and
is very easy to make. You can simply use leftover bones that are
often thrown away, such as fish heads, necks, gizzards, heart, oxtail
or chicken feet, and put them in a pot with water and vegetables
for flavor. The pot simmers for an entire day without any stirring
or checking in on it. The result is amazing flavor and great food, so
why not try and make healthy and delicious bone broth?

id you know that the last time you sat in an orange steel
chair at the union, soaking in the vibrant energy of the
crowd and relishing an ice cold beer from a plastic cup,
you had the opportunity to absorb that grand summer experience more deeply into your mind in a way that would give you
a lasting happiness boost? Same goes for the Saturday morning
stroll around the farmers market or a picnic evening at APT in
Spring Green, with a glass of wine and chicken salad sandwich,
or even sitting on a butt-flattening bleacher watching your kid
play baseball.
Allowing ourselves to settle into feelings of contentment, satisfaction and even joy is not necessarily something that comes
naturally. Rick Hansen, neuropsychologist and author of Hardwiring Happiness points out that our brains are wired, evolutionarily, with what researchers have termed a negativity bias. We are
primed to learn quickly from bad experiences, but not so much
from the good ones, since what we learned from scanning our
environment for dangers kept us safe and allowed us to survive.

The power of the negativity bias

This negativity bias also affects the structure-building processes

of our brain. We know what flows through our minds changes

our brains. Uncomfortable experiences are quickly stored in our
memories because we might need to recall the situation in the
future. For example, if you made a fool out of yourself singing
karaoke, you are less likely to try singing in front of a group of
people again. Maybe a presentation to your boss went badly; youll

presentations. Consequently, it doesnt take many negative, painful
experiences before we lose our confidence, and instead, anxiety
and fear around speaking up in public whether it is singing or a
presentation at work becomes what our minds remember and
connect to the experiences.

Positive experiences: Like water through a sieve

Positive experiences, on the other hand, do not hold the same

level of influence in our minds. While satisfying experiences are
important, this information is deemed less critical to our survival.
These calming, ordinary events are stored in a different part of our
memory system where they have less impact on our neural structure. In fact, they tend to simply wash over us, failing to make a
lasting impression. Good experiences, however, are crucial to our
well-being; feelings like contentment, safety, satisfaction and optimism help restore the balance in our nervous system, helping calm
the fight-or-flight response which negative experiences fuel.

Absorbing happiness: 3 easy steps

The good news is we can allow ourselves to absorb happy experiences in a way that permits our minds to recognize, appreciate
and ultimately incline our minds toward joy. The key, according
to Rick Hanson, is to rest your mind, deliberately, on a positive
experience so it can settle in and take shape in your brain. Here,
adapted slightly, are Rick Hansons steps to rewire your brain for
greater contentment and joy:
1. NOTICE: Take a moment to notice you are having a good
experience. The awareness of this fact helps bring it into focus
for your mind. So often we rush past the fact there is a cool
breeze coming off the lake (and that we like this), or fail to
appreciate the glorious piles of colorful vegetables on a market
table. We often equate a positive experience with something
extraordinary, when most of our opportunities for a positive
experience come from a series of small, lovely moments
throughout our day.
2. ENRICH: Stay with the positive experience for five, 10, 30
seconds or longer. Open up to the feelings of the experience
and your sense of it in your body. A big, deep breath is a way
to stay with your awareness of the fact you are having a good
time. Notice if your heart feels warm and happy. Are you
smiling?
3. ABSORB: Play with the idea that the experience is sinking
into you; visualize it as a color swirling and settling within you.
Know the experience has become a part of you, a resource to
take with you wherever you go.
Lysianne Unruh works with determined, strong-minded women

relationship or other unexpected life event into a source of power
and their greatest victory and opportunity. In particular, Time to
Thrive Coaching supports women to focus on creating effective
coping strategies; establish powerful, daily happiness habits for greater levels of
joy, and to take charge and reinvent their lives. Time to Thrive Coaching: Life is

Beyond
weight loss
7 steps to naturally boost
your metabolism and energy

By Debbie Armstrong

ou watch your friends constantly

eat junk food and not gain a pound,
while you watch your calories,
carbs, fat and sugar intake and you still
cant seem to lose anything. Its July and
you cant fit into your bathing suit. Sound
familiar? Dont give up yet!
Losing weight is more than a good diet.
It takes boosting your metabolism to a
state where it can efficiently burn the calories in order to shed the unhealthy pounds.
Everyone has the ability to make changes
that increase their metabolism.
Here are seven steps to help you boost
your metabolism naturally:

A PROTEIN-RICH BREAKFAST. Many

of us are guilty of skipping breakfast at one

time or another, but by skipping breakfast,
you are actually slowing down your metabolism and sending your body into starvation mode.
The No. 1 technique to boost your
metabolism is to eat a protein-rich breakfast. Eating breakfast helps you sustain
energy throughout the day, and keeps
you from eating a gigantic lunch and then
crashing in the afternoon while seeking a
sugary pick-me-up.
So tomorrow for breakfast, reach for
a protein shake, yogurt with walnuts, or
whole wheat toast with organic almond
butter, and you are on your way to creating a

46

Natures Pathways | July 2014

great start to your

day. According
to John Berardi,
Ph.D., CSCS, it is
best to eat within
60 minutes of
getting up in the
morning.
REAL FOODS.

Eat whole foods that are

plant-based, such as fruits,
vegetables, leafy greens,
nuts, seeds, whole grains
and lean proteins.

To keep up your
energy throughout the day, eat
every two to three
hours. Eat whole
foods that are
plant-based, such
as fruits, vegetables, leafy greens,
nuts, seeds, whole
grains and lean proteins. A good goal is to
eat 80 percent healthy and 20 percent less
healthy foods.
Besides eating real foods, drink eight
8-ounce glasses of water every day. Water
increases the efficiency of your metabolism
to burn calories and keeps you hydrated.
REST, NOT STRESS. We all know that
stress is the leading cause of many illnesses.
Unmanaged chronic stress increases cortisol
levels, which affects how metabolism burns
fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Excess fat is

then stored in the mid-section. High stress

levels also make it difficult to clear your mind
and get a restful nights sleep.
Besides feeling energized after a good
night sleep, it is also important to healthy
weight loss and management. During rest,
your body burns 60 to 70 percent of your
total caloric intake. Lack of sleep decreases
the amount of calories burned. So strive to get
seven to nine hours of good sleep per night.
EXERCISE. Exercising not only helps with

weight loss, but also benefits our minds,

www.naturespathways.com

bodies and spirits. Regular periods of

movement help to improve sluggish metabolism. A good rule to follow is to never
sit when you can stand, and never stand
still when you can walk. Aim for 20 to 30
minutes of vigorous exercise a minimum
of two to three times weekly. Exercising in
the morning helps boost your energy and
metabolism all day.
NUTRITIONAL

SUPPLEMENTS.

Supplements can help decrease fatigue and

increase energy. B vitamins are essential
for energy, especially B12. Co-enzyme Q10
supplies energy to muscles.
BIOMAT. The far infrared (FIR) rays
produced by the BioMat are essential to
boosting your metabolism, and the FIR heat
burns calories while your body is lying on
the mat. It has also been found that the FIR
heat stimulates your body to burn calories
after you are done using it. In as little as 15
to 30 minutes per day, you could be on your
way to helping boost your metabolism.
SCHEDULING HEALTHY ACTIVITY.

In this day of modern technology, it seems

that we all extend ourselves too much and
dont take the necessary time for caring for
ourselves that we should. Your schedule
reflects what is important to you. If health is
important to you, find a place to add in the
activities that will reflect that, such as exercise,
meal planning, farmers markets, rest, etc.
By investing in your health, you are
investing in your success.

Medical mom

uncover new hope

By Gerri Williams, RN and Scott Williams

few years into our marriage, we had

our son Austin. We immediately fell
in love with our baby boy as every
new sound and move was exciting. When
Austin turned 2, our family welcomed a
baby girl. We felt complete in the sense
that we had our careers, our home and our
family. However, we had no idea that our
lives were about to drastically change.
The change began when we started
noticing that Austin was no longer making
eye contact. He suddenly stopped saying,
Momma, Da Da and even Hi. After

consulting with his pediatrician, the physician claimed that he would eventually catch
up. A few months later, our son was diagnosed with autism. Given no clear direction, we researched therapies to facilitate
his development. Before long, our son was
involved in therapy five days a week.
By the time Austin was 3, he was barely
eating and was failing to thrive. He had
transitioned from constipation to watery
stools. His pediatrician called it toddlers
diarrhea. He developed feeding aversions,
which prompted us to employ feeding

therapists. Doctors told us that this was

common with autism. Conversely, we
knew there was more. This compelled us to
start researching the underlying symptoms
of autism and we found the gluten-free,
casein-free diet. After employing this diet,
our son gained 4 pounds in one month.
As concerned parents, we knew something was still missing. We began searching for a pediatric gastroenterologist. The
doctor diagnosed our son with eosinophilic esophagitis. This disorder causes
white blood cells to accumulate in the
esophagus, which triggers severe pain,
inflammation, swallowing difficulties and
anorexia. Due to this breakthrough diagnosis, Austin began the necessary treatments and was gaining more weight.
After this all had taken place, we were
blessed with a baby girl. She was born
perfect, like her brother. We were taken
back to the time before our son began
regressing developmentally and medically.
However, this too was short lived. By the
time our daughter was a toddler, she also
regressed developmentally and medically.
When our son was 5 years old, he began
having seizures. We were told by his doctor
that this is not uncommon among the
autistic population. I was extremely disappointed as a mom and a health professional.
In our daughters case, we were again told,
She will outgrow it. However, she developed severe abdominal pain, vomiting and
was in need of a feeding tube. We had no
idea how this journey would impact our
www.naturespathways.com

lives. Instinctively, we searched for a technologically advanced clinic and thats when
we found the Cleveland Clinic.
After multiple tests, our children were
diagnosed with mitochondrial disorder.
At the same time, our kids were given very
little hope. Their doctor was very caring
and prescribed an array of supplements to
support stable mitochondrial functioning.

However, he told us their life expectancy

would be short. There were no words to
describe our feelings. Although the doctor
was completely understanding and caring,
her nurse told us, If you go to enough
doctors, they will tell you what you want
to hear. The odds of survival were stacked
against our children, and my husband and
I were determined to save our children.

our children, we found hyperbaric oxygen
therapy (HBOT).
We then spoke with Shannon Kenitz. We
learned about her daughters miraculous
recovery with HBOT and quickly started
treatment.
After 40 HBOT sessions our son had
an improved immune system, increased
speech, ate new foods, enhanced his
social/cognition and was seizure-free. Our
daughter also had an improved immune
system, stopped vomiting, began eating,
gained weight and experienced a significant increase in energy. This transformation occurred because of HBOT and has

Relative
Perspective

By D.S. Neviaser

Here is another poem to help you appreciate what a gift

life and you really are.

Relative Perspective

Whenever I feel down and things dont seem right

I count all my blessings which gives me insight.
I remember I am better off than I feel
Im not being vain, Im just being real.
My shoes may be worn, but I have two good feet.
I may not have steak but I have food to eat.
I may not see well, but at least I have sight.
There is pain in my past, but my future is bright.
I am not very rich, but have time I can lend.
I may not know fame, but have many friends.
I wont win a race, but I am in good health.
I may not be smart, but I know myself well.
I may not wear silk, but these clothes are my own.
My house may be small, but for me it is home.
My feelings may hurt but at least I can feel,

I may not be handsome, but have my appeal.

I am only one man, but I have family.
I may not live long, then in heaven Ill be.
I am not well traveled, but have seen the sunset.
And the beauty there I can never forget.
So in retrospect I am really okay,
I cant complain as I greet each new day.
I may be alone when I open my eyes
But will always take joy being able to rise.
I will also take pride in the friend within me,
He gives my heart life and sets my soul free!
So rise my good man! Spread cheer all around
Face each day with your feet on the ground!
Share all the blessings that lie within me
Give others a vision of who they can be.
Walk forward in stride and pull up the weak
Whether their heart or a meaning they seek,
So they can stand up with eyes open wide
No longer hurting or trying to hide.
Then your spirit will fly high from there
Far beyond how your life may appear.
A blessing to some, a good friend to others
A present to all sisters and brothers.

Getting the
most nutrition
out of your
garden

By Rosalie Misco

t is garden time again; the kale is in, the tomatoes are planted
and we are really busy too busy to get that nutrition from
the garden to the tummies. It happens to all of us, even
Grandma Rose. This month, I have tips to help you avoid wasting
the healthy food from your garden because you are just too busy.
Soon it will be August and tomatoes will ripen, a few here and
there. We cant eat them all and they dont keep very long. Here is a
tip: When your tomatoes are fully ripe, wash them and put them in
a 2-gallon freezer bag and place it in the freezer. Keep adding ripe
tomatoes until the bag is full. They will keep all winter when frozen.
On a lazy Sunday, fill your 18-quart roaster with frozen tomatoes. Cook them on high with the lid on until they are well cooked.
Smash the tomatoes down if the skins dont burst. Take the lid off
and let them cook until liquid is reduced to half. At this point,
you have tomato sauce with skins and seeds. Let the tomatoes cool
somewhat or overnight and put the tomatoes with skins and seeds
in your blender. Blend and like magic, the skins and seeds are gone
and you are left with very healthy tomato sauce to use in chili and
spaghetti sauce.
To make a healthy tomato drink, cook the tomatoes as above.
Add onions, celery, etc. but dont reduce to sauce consistency.
Put this in the blender. Add kale, lettuce or whatever you find in
the garden to the blender. Now you have a very healthy potion. Put
the sauce or juice you have made in quart-size heavy duty freezer
bags and then put the bags into the freezer to use all winter long or
for when you have time to cook. Or, thaw a tomato juice drink and
keep it in the refrigerator for up to a week.
For added nutrition, add some Hi-maize 260 to sauces and
chili. Hi-maize 260 resistant starch fiber lowers cholesterol, and
prevents blood sugar rise and weight gain. Hi-maize 260 is a nongenetically modified organism (GMO) product.

If its hot for

you, its hot
for them

By Kimberly Maahs

y the time you read this, it will be

July. We will be in the heart of the
summer season. Seventy-degree
days will be a distant memory and the
humidity will be omnipresent. I personally
am not looking forward to it.
On the upside, Im ready! Ive packed away
my winter coat and exchanged my warm
clothes for more breathable cottons. Ive got
my sandals on to protect my feet from the hot
pavement and a refrigerator full of bottled
water for when Im on the go. Im ready to
beat the heat. Best of all, I have choices. I have

complete
control

where I go
and how
long I stay
there. Our
pets should be so lucky. Instead, they must
rely on our good judgment and empathy for
their comfort during these summer months.
With a little knowledge on how their bodies
deal with the heat and some applied common
sense, they should do alright.

Dogs and cats dont sweat like we do. You

may have heard that they sweat through
their paws, but according to Kimberly May,
a veterinarian with the American Veterinarian Medical Association, any secretions from there or from their nose, mouth
or tongue are not for sweating; theyre for
protection and moisture and are insufficient to cool the blood.
So how are your pets able to cool themselves down? The first thing that comes to
mind for most of us is panting. Panting
helps to release your pets internal body heat
through evaporation. But with increased
panting, dehydration can become a real
concern. Its important to make sure they
always have access to fresh, clean water to
rehydrate themselves regularly. So what
else can we do?
The No. 1 request groomers get from our
clients in the summer is to shave their pets.
But just as your pets coat keeps them warm
in the winter, it also insulates and keeps
them from absorbing extra heat in the
summer. Shaving your pet takes away this
important layer of protection from the sun
and the heat. It leaves them vulnerable to
sunburn, insect bites and overheating. As
counterintuitive as it sounds, shaving your
www.naturespathways.com

pet can actually make him or her hotter.

Bear in mind that theres nothing wrong
with taking off some of the excess coat, but
you should always leave at least an inch or
so, verses knockin em naked, as a client
of mine so eloquently put it.
Keeping your pet indoors during the
hottest parts of the day is just plain smart.
Especially when temperatures are soaring,
a short walk during the early morning
hours or at dusk is best. Getting your pet to
lie on a tile floor or a cooling mat is helpful
when it comes to transferring excess heat
away from their body. And theres always
our best line of defense against the heat,
not only for ourselves, but also our pets: air
conditioning. Dont have air conditioning?
Swimming, cool baths or cool wet towels
are always good options too.
When is it best to leave pets at home? As
much as the local art fair or festival sounds
inviting to you, I dont believe its any place
for your dog. Think about it from your pets
point of view: Your feet are burning from
the hot pavement. Youre in a fur coat with
no air flowing down at your level. The heat
is radiating up from the ground at the same
time its beating down on you from above.
You cant sweat and you dont have anything
to drink unless it occurs to the person who
just tripped over you to offer you something.
Dangerous? Yes. Stressful? Most definitely.
When in doubt as to whether to take your
pet with you to a summer event, ask yourself
this: Under the exact same conditions (their
bodys ability to dispel heat, their amount
of protection) and the exact same circumstances (weather, environment, duration),
would you trade places with your pet?
If the answer is no, well then the answer
is no! And that goes for the leaving them
in a parked car for just a minute question too. I hope by now that goes without
saying. Just dont do it!

Stroke:
Learning the
beauty in
its mysteries
One persons journey

By Sonya Sullins, MBA, CRHP

arch 31, 2014 is just another day on the calendar unless

its the day you had a stroke. Those of you who follow me
may have noticed my absence, but bit by bit Im coming
back. I hope to do so wiser, more compassionate, and as an even
better healer for myself and others. There is much to be learned from
an experience like this if you are willing to be open to it.
This journey of sickness and recovery has brought back to me a
memory from childhood that you may be familiar with. To me, its
message is timeless and transcends religious dogma. I can remember the plaque that hung from Grandmas house with such clarity
these days as it rings so true:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage
to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
At the time of this writing, it has been eight weeks since my stroke
and just over two weeks since Ive been home from the nursing
home. In many ways, coming home is where the real work of
healing ones spirit, ones soul and ones heart really happens. Not a
day goes by that I am not challenged to live up to the standards of
The Serenity Prayer. Over the course of the past eight weeks, there
have been a million times Ive wanted to change things, like the
fact I had the stroke in the first place, yet I cannot.
Conversely, theres been a million times Ive wanted to give up
give up on driving again, give up on walking without a limp, give up
on writing or typing, but I dont give up. I cant allow myself to. I have
courage. I muster my gumption and forge ahead. With that said,
there will come those times where I will need to have the wisdom
to know which things to stop trying to change as I surrender to my
new normal and accept those things I cannot change. A lifetime of
lessons and learning is all wrapped up in this one experience.
My healing journey, like any other, is not just physical, but
emotional and spiritual as well. I cant always change where I am
physically. But my emotional and spiritual states are uniquely mine
to control. Yet I do not do this alone. To pick me up when I fall, I

54

Natures Pathways | July 2014

rely on you, my friends. I am in such a state of gratitude and truly

humbled by the outpouring of love and help: the flowers that made
my day brighter, the times you held my hand (both to comfort me
but also to help manage the swelling), the gift card so that I could
get those needed items (at a time when we werent working) and
fixing my mess of hair so that I at least looked human.
My family took care of everything, including the move, so that
my husband could be by my side 24/7. And each time I opened
my eyes, even if I didnt know where I was, I felt safe, relieved and
comforted to see him there.
My friends who are healers showered me with love in distance
healing and started a Facebook page for me to stay connected to
the world. My heart swells with gratitude and love as many of you
took time out of your busy day with your own family, friends and
patients/clients to heal me with acupuncture, craniosacral therapy,
reiki, crystal therapy, naturopathy, Access Bars therapy, EFT
and of course the Amethyst BioMat. In addition to the medical
community, I owe a debt of gratitude to Nathan (PT) and Rick
(OT), compassionate and talented therapists. I truly dont know
where I would be without each of you!
In the meantime, I invite you to incorporate more of these
elements into your life starting now! Gratitude, surrender, peace
and happiness, and love and dont forget to be luminous!
My healing journey has left me with the desire to help myself as well
as others! I am thrilled and blessed to be able to tell you that I am
back seeing clients! My first appointment was while I was still in the
nursing home. That is how much I love what I do! So I do hope you
come and see me. Also, if youre interested to know more about this
experience and my continued journey, watch my blog for insights and updates.

Dont like
the face in
the mirror?
Acne scarring improves
when collagen
can do its job!

By Angela Rahm and Dee Dee Delkamp

f you think acne affects only the hormonal teen, think again.
Adults of all ages have breakouts. Some are isolated and go
away in a couple of days, and others experience ongoing acne
followed by deep scarring. Unfortunately, there are very few treatments that can support the bodys ability to rejuvenate the collagen
in the dermis layer of the skin. To help with this on your face
problem for the world to see, makeup is not the solution. With
a skilled hand and eye, using proper technique, tools and products can now give hope to those suffering from acne, surgical and
chicken pox scars, as well as many other skin issues.

What can you do?

Treatment options include: micro-dermabrasions and chemical peels (often very harsh and painful), retinoic acid (used alone
but not very effective and expensive), lasers (IPL & fraxel: painful,
expensive and a long downtime for many) and fillers (eventually
reabsorbed into the body and not long lasting). However, hands
down, micro-derma needling is the safest and most effective way
to treat your skin with virtually no downtime and little to no risk.
Tools needed for micro-needling: You can do it yourself.
Derma rollers are sold very inexpensively on the web, but as a
caution, you may cause a harder-to-treat problem, worsen the
current problem or cause an infection. Look for companies that
have medical supervision and a licensed aesthetician or nurse on
staff to ensure quality and safety!
Product: There are some great ingredients to support the skin.
Vitamin C, hyaluranic acid and collagen can be instrumental in
helping to improve the integrity of the skin.

What can hyaluranic acid and collagen

do for your body?

Hyaluronic acid is a fluid that is found in almost all cells of the body,
but in very high concentrations in bones, joints, tendons, ligaments,
connective tissue, skin, hair follicles, gum tissue and eyes. Collagen
www.naturespathways.com

is an amino acid also found in these areas, as well as in the digestive

system and blood vessels. These are both substances that our bodies
need to produce continuously because they are used up by the body
on an ongoing basis. Replenishing our hyaluronic acid and collagen is not a problem when we are under the age of 30, but becomes
increasingly an issue as we age. The availability of our hyaluronic acid
and collagen are also reduced more quickly with poor nutrition, too
much sun exposure and joint/tissue injuries. What people notice
most with the decrease of hyaluronic acid and collagen are wrinkles,
joint pain and stiffness. Some other symptoms are thinning hair or
hair loss, age spots, slow wound healing and thinning cartilage.
Millions of people are searching for ways to replace their hyaluronic acid and collagen. Many of these people are choosing to get
injections to accomplish this, but we believe there are safer, less
painful and much less expensive ways to do this.
A personalized plan including nutrition, water consumption,
cleansing/detoxification and a specific product for replenishing
hyaluronic acid and collagen can be formulated.
Please contact Dee Dee or Angela for more details.

Adventures in
self-awareness
Caring for pets with PTSD

By Nikki Cohen-Wichner, MS, LMFT

I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the

way of a whole human being.
Abraham Lincoln

his months adventure challenges you to shift paradigms

regarding holistic health care for animals to include
mental/spiritual health care. I recently overheard someone
say that our society needs to treat children with the same respect
animals receive. While this comment could be hotly debated in
many circles, it prompted me to think of how todays child protection laws grew out of laws that regulated the treatment of animals.
(Google Mary Ellen and New York SPCA for more information.)
Animals increasingly become victims of the stress humans
experience while trying to maintain balance in an out-of-balance
world. The media is inundated with stories of extreme domestic
violence that ends tragically; yet how often do they mention the
animals that have been traumatized? According to Wisconsin
Voters For Companion Animals, The Humane Society of the

United States estimates that nearly 1 million animals a year are

abused or killed in connection with domestic violence.

Statistics to ponder

About 2,168,000 women and men are physically assaulted by

an intimate partner in the U.S. every year, according to the

U.S. Department of Justice.
Sixty-three percent of U.S. households own a pet, according to
American Pet Products Association statistics. Thats 1,365,840
households with pets.
Seventy-one percent of domestic violence victims report that
their abuser also targeted their animal, according to the study
The Abuse of Animals and Domestic Violence: A National
Survey of Shelters for Women Who Are Battered. That equates
to 969,746 households with animal victims of domestic violence.
Forty-seven states currently have felony provisions for animal
cruelty. (Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota are the
exceptions.) Before 1986, only four states had felony animal
cruelty laws.
These statistics, gathered by the Humane Society of the United
States, beg for us to expand awareness of a serious emotional/spiritual health crisis almost as common in animals as it is in humans:
post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The National Center for
PTSD describes key PTSD symptoms:
1. RELIVING THE EVENT (AKA RE-EXPERIENCING
SYMPTOMS): Memories of the traumatic event can come

back at any time. Feeling the same fear and horror as when
the event took place is common. Some argue its impossible
to know if animals truly relive traumatic events; yet each time
my pony colleague flinches at fast-moving gestures, I have no
doubt memories of abuse were triggered. Shes never been

56

Natures Pathways | July 2014

www.naturespathways.com

3. NEGATIVE CHANGES IN BELIEFS AND FEELINGS:

This is reflected by an animals withdrawal and/or avoidance

of relationships with humans or other animals. Victims lack
self-confidence.
4. FEELING KEYED UP OR ON EDGE (AKA
HYPERAROUSAL): These victimized animals are jittery or

always alert and on the lookout for danger; they may suddenly
become violent or irritable. The risk of serious injury to
humans by an animals PTSD reaction is a key reason to work
with a professional who can help you understand PTSD and
how to identify triggers, and create a safety plan that protects
not only people but also the animal, who may need to be
euthanized if it causes serious injury to others when triggered.

Keep in mind that stress reactions after a traumatic event are normal
and not diagnosed as PTSD in humans and shouldnt be diagnosed
in animals. Like humans, many animals will have stress reactions
following a trauma but get better in time. You should seek help
from a professional experienced in PTSD treatment if symptoms:
Last longer than three months;
Cause your pet great distress; or
Disrupt your animals or your own (or familys) work or home
life. (Or if you have children and arent 100 percent confident
in your safety plan while the animal recovers from the trauma.)
Veterinarians can provide medical treatment for PTSD symptoms related to the neurological effects of PTSD. Professionals
who understand PTSD and can teach humans in the family how
to provide confident and compassionate care for animal trauma
victims and can also become an important member of your pets
treatment team.
Nikki Cohen-Wichner, MS, LMFT, is an AAMFT clinical fellow.
She and her husband of 27 years are co-creators of Healing Horsemanship, a nationally recognized Equine Assisted Activities and
Therapy program. Nikki believes that when you are self-aware and
at peace with yourself, all relationships evolve on a healthier path.

When your
heart speaks,
take good notes
The art of spiritual journaling

By Cecilia Farran

WORDS THAT STAY, Kira explains to her Gelfling friend Jen

in Jim Hensons The Dark Crystal, are called writing. She could
just as well have been describing journaling, for to journal, we
reach into our heart and soul to bring out ideas that have no shape
or form and then make them into words that stay, at least for a
time, on a visible place on the page.
Journaling is a process of writing that finds its source in the
inner you. Journaling:
1. Slows us down into the now and helps us relax
2. Helps us reach inward to the intuitive creative place in our heart
3. Offers us a way to chart our lifes progress, and gives us a
reference for memory
4. Is a way to grow to know ourselves
5. Is a safety valve; a way to process our emotions and move
beyond them
Something magic happens when we commit words to paper.
Whether as an aspiring poet, novelist or songwriter, or someone
who just wants to clarify his or her own thoughts, there is benefit
in this left brain (mind)-right brain (heart) exercise.

To the beginner, this may seem daunting, but be gentle with

yourself. Go slowly.
I began journaling when I received a five-year diary for a present
as a freshman. It was the kind of diary in which you could write
only a few lines for five years of entries for each date on each page.
Thus, I charted the agonies and ecstasy of my teen years. I continued to write now and again, but I really began to journal daily
and with the fervent purpose of exploring my soul after reading
Emergence, by Barbara Marx Hubbard, in which she encouraged
her readers to enter their Inner Sanctuary in order to hear their
Inner Voice. I highly recommend this book.
OK, fine, you say, but how do I begin? Well, do what Captain
Kangaroo used to tell us: Get something to write with and something
to write on. It is that simple. Note, we are not talking about opening
up the computer or iPad here, but putting a real pen to real paper.
What shall I write? I consider that a self-explanatory question:
What else would you write but words? String them together in a
sentence or not. Tell the page what sort of a day you are having.
Write about your plans for later in the day. Share how you feel.
Draw a picture.

Nothing is too trivial or stupid. Do not fear, do not think and

do not judge: Those are concerns of your head and journaling is
about what is in your heart. Get in the now and explore. Its no big
deal. Just do it. Your heart will know and keep the words flowing.
Give your words an honored repository. Choose a nice journal
that feels good in your hand. Fortunately there is no lack of beautiful journal choices. Embossed leather-bound journals by Oberon,
a small U.S.-based company, top the list. These are good quality
and will last a lifetime, acquiring a soft patina as the years go by.
Paper Blank journals have beautiful hard covers, come in all
sizes, are lined/unlined and sport a secret pocket in the back
cover. There are inexpensive journals with ribbon markers, writing
prompts, pictures and inspirational quotes scattered throughout.
There are journals for recovery, such as A New Day, A New Life:
A Guided Journal, and there are journals like My Days, My Writings to get children started.
For journaling advice there are many very good books to prompt
and guide you. (See the references below for a listing.)
If you wish to shift yourself from ego to essence, try journaling. Get a cup of tea, find a soft chair in a quiet corner and set a
timer. Write for five minutes, or as Julia Cameron suggests in The
Artists Way, write three pages.
And be gentle with yourself. Writing is an act of faith, of courage,
of honesty and has so many benefits.
When you feel your heart speaking, take notes.
Cecilia Farran owns 43/90 North Earth Gifts, where aspiring
writers/journalists are always welcome and supported by a large
selection of journals and informative books on writing. Cecilia is
an avid writer herself and believes strongly in the spiritual benefits
of daily journaling. She stands ready to offer help to anyone interested in this spiritual practice. For more information about 43/90 North, see this

Going green to
save the planet

By Jill Carlson

hile Kermit the Frog sang Its Not Easy Being Green,
going green is something that everyone can do with
some easy changes. Green is the word used when
referring to doing things that are safe for the environment, and in
turn will extend the life of planet Earth.

What you can do

Think back to many years ago when bringing our own bags to the
grocery store started to be the in thing. Now, its second nature
for shoppers to bring their own bags (or remember that youve left
them in the car once youve reached the checkout lane!). Reusable shopping bags save trees and lessen the need to use petroleum
products to make plastic bags.
Remember when everyone was carrying bottled water with
them wherever they went? Since then, reality has hit that bottled
water is not a way to be green, as the empty bottles generate a lot
of waste when tossed into landfills. Now, the trend is to carry a
refillable bottle, preferably made of aluminum instead of plastic,
and to use filtered tap water.
Changing the light bulbs throughout your home to compact
fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) is another easy way to save money
and go green. While the CFLs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, they last much longer and in the long run, save money.

Green weddings

Getting married soon? There are ways to hold a green wedding

ceremony and reception. Purchase engagement and wedding
bands at an antique shop rather than purchasing them new. Have
a jeweler melt down old gold or silver rings found at antique
shops to create your own unique bands. Recycling antique rings is
considered green because its better than using precious resources
to create new rings.
Send out emailed invitations instead of paper invites. Several
online sites, including Evite, offer e-wedding invitations.
Hold the ceremony outside and use a natural theme by decorating with branches, dried grasses or live plants. Use locally raised
organic flowers. Instead of registering for material things for

Building trends

New commercial buildings and homes are being built green by

using materials such as bamboo flooring, tinted windows to
control heating and cooling, and solar panels to harness the
suns energy. Walls are painted with low or no volatile organic
compound (VOC) paints to lessen emissions from chemicals
usually found in paint.
Building green translates to more green in the wallet through
reduced energy and water consumption and maintenance costs.
Over 500 commercial buildings in Wisconsin have received a
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some Madison area

The power
of pule

By Daren Pagenkopf

omi lomi is intentionally spiritual

in its orientation and approach
to healing using pule, the Hawaiian word meaning prayer. Each lomi lomi
session begins with a pule, or prayerful
healing, but that is just the beginning. It
continues throughout the entire session,
giving gratitude, thanks and love, and
asking for the presence of God and Gods
assistance/guidance for true emotional,
physical, spiritual and inner healing for that

person. Pule may be silent or aloud; in

English, Hawaiian, or in tongues; and may
even be in the form of a chant.
Traditional lomi lomi practitioners
understand that the purpose of lomi lomi
is to truly minister to the body and spirit.
Practitioners know that all of the healing is

a result of the power of Gods grace, mercy

and love, and not a result of anything that
they do on their own. The Paragon Institute that has received the blessing of Aunty
Margaret Machado, world-renowned lomi
lomi master, quotes her philosophy: The
healing is done through you, not from
you. Aunty says, I am not the healer, God
is the healer.
The power in the words of prayer can
be very profound. In the book, Healing
by Francis MacNutt, Larry Dossey, M.D.,
believes that there may come a time when
physicians, will be sued for malpractice
if they fail to prescribe prayer thereby
withholding a treatment proven to be
effective against disease. In Larry Dosseys
own book, Prayer is Good Medicine, he
states Prayer is a medical and scientific
issue. Today over 130 controlled studies
investigating the effects of intercessory
prayer have been carried out, and over
half of these show statistical evidence that
prayer has a significant effect. In addition,
more than 250 studies show that, on an
average, religious practice that includes
prayer promote health. Even by todays
standards, if it was discovered that a drug
had over a 50 percent positive impact with
no side effects, it would be touted as a
www.naturespathways.com

miracle drug! With that being said, we all

should pray for the benefits of the medication that we take or administer and for the
side effect to be reduced.
Lomi lomi, like other healing modalities and massages, may work on a spiritual/
energetic level that you may or may not be
aware of as a recipient. For this reason, it
is important for you as a consumer to be
educated as you seek out healing. When
seeking healing, it may be a challenge to
distinguish between true and artificial
healing. Even among lomi lomi providers
there is a far-ranging difference between
what sources the provider prays to or goes
to for assistance, guidance and healing. For
instance, some ohanas (families) approach
lomi lomi prayers very generally, calling
out to the universe for healing, while some
like Aunty Margaret are Christian-based
and others pray to the Goddess Pele and
other Hawaiian gods/goddesses. Some
sources can be very deceptive and evil.
They even have a history of harm or control
that is hidden behind a facade of healing. If
you are able to spend time on the land in
Hawaii beyond the tourist areas, you will
experience the contrasting forces/sources.
I recommend that before seeking any
type of energetic, spiritual or massage
healing, you talk to the provider and find
out their approach and sources of healing.
This will be very important to your health
and well-being and ensure that the treatment is in alignment, or at least not in
conflict, with your own spirit and spiritual
beliefs/philosophies.
Pule/prayer is profoundly powerful for
spiritual, physical, emotional and inner
healing for which lomi lomi can provide
the setting. I encourage you to take some
time each day and implement prayer into
your life for your own spiritual connection,
peace and healing.

Has your
cat seen a
veterinarian
lately?

By Lori Scarlett, DVM

here are over 86 million pet cats in the United States,

making them the most popular pet. The pet dog population comes in around 78 million, yet the ratio of dogs to
cats in the average veterinary clinic is about 60-to-40. Many people
dont take their cat to the veterinarian for a number of reasons: its

too hard to get the cat in a carrier, the cat gets stressed on the car
ride, the cat doesnt like the veterinarian, it is an inside-only cat
and doesnt get sick. Do any of these sound familiar?
It is fair to say that cats, carriers and car rides are not the easiest
for anyone. Most cats dont go on joy rides with their owners, so
car rides usually mean just one thing: The vet. While cats usually
like small, dark boxes to hide in, they are less enamored when
that small box is suddenly closed up and they cant get out when
it starts to move.
Its a fallacy that indoor cats dont need to see the veterinarian
annually. Many cat owners feel that if their cat is strictly indoors,
it doesnt need vaccinations. But indoor-only cats sometimes slip
outside and are exposed to stray cats and parasites. If you have
kids, they might visit a new kitten down the street and bring
diseases back to the house on their clothes and shoes. A new pet in
the household can bring diseases and fleas. And who can predict
when a natural disaster, like a tornado, fire or flood, will displace
you and your pet. If your pet gets lost or ends up at a shelter, they
will be exposed to many diseases.
Cats are masters at hiding illness, so it is important to watch for
subtle changes in your cat. Know how your cat normally interacts with family members or other pets. Changes in those interactions can indicate pain. Cats sleep 16-18 hours a day, so it can
be hard to tell if your cat is lethargic. Knowing your cats sleep
habits (when, where and how long) is important for helping detect
illness. Have you noticed your cat isnt eating as well or has gotten
finicky? Those can be signs of illness or dental disease. Is your cat
not using the litter box regularly? Stress, kidney disease, a bladder
infection or arthritis could be to blame. Another subtle change
may be how much your cat talks to you. Are you finding mats,
dandruff or hair loss when you pet your cat? These changes should
be discussed with your veterinarian.
The annual exam is the time to discuss changes in your cats
behavior or physique. Your cat should have a health risk assessment
www.naturespathways.com

each year, along with the physical exam. This assessment will help
you and your veterinarian determine which vaccines are needed
to help prevent disease, discuss bloodwork to look for underlying
diseases, and talk about medications (including flea/tick and heartworm preventatives) and what to expect at your pets life stage.
There are many ways to make it easier to get your cat to the vet. Toploading carriers make it easier to get a cat in the carrier. Carriers with
easily removed tops allow the cat to remain in the bottom and feel more
secure during the exam. Leave the carrier out for several days before
the exam so the cat gets used to it. Make it smell more like home
by putting a favorite persons shirt in the bottom. Before the car ride,
spray a towel or wipe the inside with Feliway, a synthetic calming cat
pheromone. Cover the crate with a towel to decrease motion sickness.
Look for a clinic that is a certified Cat Friendly Practice. Ask to go
right into the exam room when you arrive and let your cat wander
around the exam room exploring, if he wants. Speak calmly and
quietly to your cat before and during the exam, and praise her afterward. If you have been touching your cats ears, face, feet and tail at
home regularly, she will be more accustomed to the physical exam.
With the right preparation, veterinary visits with your cat can be
almost stress-free!

Contemplative approaches provide a new experience of the beauty of Olbrich Botanical Gardens. The
first half of each class will begin in quiet meditation
together followed by a lightly facilitated movement
warm-up to connect kinesthetically with the wonders around us. During the second half of each class,
we will disperse throughout the garden. Each person will seek a special niche for a time of individual
contemplation, soaking in the sights, sounds, smells
and textures of the immediate surroundings. We
will then share our individual experiences through
movement reflections and create a simple dance as a
group. This class brings together the healing powers
of both dance and nature informed by the fields of
dance/movement therapy and eco-psychology. Previous dance experience is not required. Cost: $60 for
four weeks. Location: Olbrich Botanical Gardens. To

and healing involves the whole woman, mind and
body. Retreats are designed to help women find inner
strength and experience the hope needed to live each
day beyond the boundaries of breast cancer. Each
four-day retreat is designed and led by breast cancer
survivors for breast cancer survivors to begin healing
on their own. This retreat will be held in Door County.
