Assessment

• When a pt. first comes in experiencing signs of mental illness it is important


to do a full medical workup to rule out a medical diagnosis or medication
toxicity

• Assess belief systems and cultural preference

• Assess family dynamics

o Financial

o Humiliation

o Coping

• Assess social and occupational functioning

o Can they hold a job

Acute Phase

• Provide safety

• Medicate

• Let the rest until the acute phase subsides

• Need a structured routine

• Consistent environment

• Set limits

• Address inappropriate behavior

• Open and honest communication

Phase II (Maintenance Phase)

• Educate about meds

• Should be participating in groups

• Educate about illness


• May need vocation training

• May need self care training

• Social skills groups

• Relapse prevention- the more they relapse the more difficult it is to treat

• Health teaching/ health promotion

• Teach about avoidance or risky behaviors (safe sex)

• Alcohol and drugs and recovery

Nursing Care

• Promoting safety

• Milieu Therapy

• Establishing a therapeutic relationship

• Teach positive thinking
