(championship game)
BOYNE CITY The Boyne
City baseball team continued
their solid play as of late by winning the Division III district title
on their home field over Harbor
Springs in the championship contest on May 31.
The Ramblers advanced to the
final with an 11-6 victory over Elk
Rapids in the semifinal contest in
the second game of the day.
In the championship game,
Tanner Kruzel took the mound
and picked up the win, tossing six
innings of six hit ball, allowing
four runs, while walking five and
fanning seven. Derek Willis came
on in the seventh to pick up the
save, allowing one hit before
striking out the side.
The Rambler offense was paced
by Jeff Miller, who finished the
game 3-for-3 and an RBI, while
Dalton Gardner knocked in a pair
of runs as well on two hits.
Also for Boyne, Jordan Fair,
Cody Milbrandt, Maceo Vroman,
Willis, Kruzel, Max Cuper and
Spencer Binkley each added one
hit, with Fair, Milbrandt and Vroman all picking up RBIs.
The Ramblers scored all seven
of their runs in the first inning.

(semifinal)
BOYNE CITY In the semifinal win over Elk Rapids, Boyne
would send Willis to the hill and
the sophomore would deliver, allowing five hits, two walks and
fanning seven. Miller would pitch

in relief for the Ramblers.

At the plate, Willis would help
his own cause with two base
knocks and three runs batted in,
while Gardner and Milbrandt
added two hits each, with Milbrandt added an RBI and Miller
picked up a pair of RBIs on one
hit.

boyne City 5, Charlevoix 1

(pre district)
BOYNE CITY The Ramblers
jumped out to a 3-1 first inning
lead and never looked back as
they kept the always dangerous
Charlevoix offense off balance in
winning their pre district contest, 5-1 on May 27.
Tanner Kruzel earned the win
for Boyne City, allowing one run
on a three hits, walked five and
struck out nine.
Charlevoix ace, Nate Moon
took the loss, allowing five runs
(three earned) on five hits, four
walks and struck out seven.
At the plate for the Rayders,
Noah Certa doubled, while Moon
and Luke Klinger each added one
hit.
It was a tough end to the season for us, Charlevoix coach
Allen Telgenhof said. We just
couldnt break through against
(Tanner) Kruzel and we made
some uncharacteristic errors to
give them some insurance runs.
Charlevoix finished the season
24-9, as five seniors played their
last game, including Shane
Sutherland who was a four year
starter and Luke Klinger, who
started three. J.J. Bottomley,
Logan Eckhardt and Andrew
Mitchell are the other three.

finished the season with a school

record 39 runs scored, breaking
his own record of 38 from last
year. Will Telgenhof had 47 hits,
one short of the school record.
The Rayders batted .349 on the
season, just shy of the season
record of .354. Charlevoix also set
new school records for runs with
294 runs, 71 doubles and 176
stolen bases.

harbor springs 3, east Jordan 2

(pre district)
BOYNE CITY The Red Devils

fell in a heartbreaker 3-2, to Harbor Springs in a pre district contest on May 27.
East Jordan got on the board
first, scoring solo runs in the second and fourth innings, for a 2-0
lead, only to see the Rams tie the
game in the bottom half of the inning.
Harbor then pushed across the
go ahead run in the sixth inning
on a fielders choice.
Colin Petrie went the distance
for EJ, allowing three hits, walking one and struck out five.
Noah Raymond, Tucker Alward, Herschell Sutton and Oscar

Scheier had singles for the Red

Devils.
This was an absolutely great
ballgame exemplifying how good
the Lake Michigan Conference
competition really is, said East
Jordan coach Tom Reid Jr.
Petrie pitched his tail off and
the whole team played phenomenal team defense. We had two
guys on in the sevenh and
couldnt get the runs across. This
loss is a hard pill to swallow. The
kids played great but just didnt
get the win to show for it.

Rayders reign over Elks in Soccer district final

by Chris Fiel

Charlevoix 2, elk rapids 1

CHARLEVOIX For the second
time in as many years, Elizabeth
Way seems to find her own way to
deliver.
The sophomore midfielder took
a pass from Katie Kitely inside the
18 with 2:46 remaining in the second half and maneuvered her way
around the Elk Rapids defense before netting what would turn out
to be the game winner over the
Elks on May 31.
Charlevoix would score first,
just five minutes into the contest
as sophomore forward, Kelsey Engstrom found freshman forward
Julia Doskoch in front of the Elks
goal for an early 1-0 lead that
would stay that way until the second half.
In the second half the Elks were
awarded a penalty kick on a foul in
the box during an Elk Rapids corner kick. Elk Megan Henige was
able to complete the penalty kick
to knot the score at 1-1 and it
would stay like that until Kitely
found Way late in the contest.
I was pleased with how fast we
were to the ball tonight. We were
able to maintain possession
through a great deal of the game,
Charlevoix coach Pete Scholten
said. I was so proud that we
didnt panic after the penalty kick.
As a team we kept our composure
and found a way to win. After
such a cold rainy spring its difficult to play in the heat that we had
today. Our girls really gave it all
they had and they were rewarded.
Keeper Gloria Greene finished
with 10 saves on goal as the Rayders improved to 19-5-1 on the season and will have played in their
regional semifinal match against
Leland on June 3, after we have
went to press. Results in next
weeks paper.

EAST JORDAN The Lady Red

Devils fell 6-2, 5-1 to Central Lake
in their season finale on May 29.
In the opener, both teams were
able to put a run on the board in
the first inning, only to see the
Lady Trojans add another five to
that in the third inning. East Jordan was able to score another run
in the fifth for the final score of
the contest.
Senior Tori Goodrich took the
pitching loss, allowing five hits,
while striking out four and walking none.
At the plate for EJ, Lindsey Graham finished with two hits, while

Stephanie Buckholz, Tori

Goodrich and Haley Goodrich all
added a single each.
It was fun to wrap up our season at home without the pressure
of the state tournament, East Jordan coach Meg Kitson said. My
senior pitchers, (Tommie Outman
and Tori Goodrich) pitched great
today in their Red Devil finale.
Kayly Zimmer and Lindsey Graham had good days too.
In the nightcap, Outman took
the loss, allowing seven hits, walking four and striking out six.
Offensively for the Red Devils,
Tori Goodrich had two hits and
Lindsay Schroeder tripled as EJ
wrapped up their 9-20 season.

BOYNE CITY Back to Back.
Coming off last seasons surprise district championship
and returning a majority of their starting line-up, this
years Boyne City Rambler softball team wasnt about to
surprise anyone.
Fresh off becoming the co-champions of the Lake Michigan Conference a week earlier, the Ramblers were set to defend their district title. Following a 16-1 pre-district win
over Charlevoix on May 27, the Ramblers advanced to the
semifinals against Elk Rapids on May 31, where they
would ultimately go on to win 17-3. In the final against
Mancelona, Boyne got on top early and played solid behind
the pitching of Emma Shumaker as they earned their title
9-2.
In the championship game against Mancelona, Boyne
would strike first, putting up four runs on the board in the
top of the first and held that lead until fourth, when the
Lady Ironmen found a way to push across a pair of runs of
their own, only to watch the defending champions roar
back with a five run sixth inning and put the game away.
Shumaker earned her second win of the day, going the
distance, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out
six and walking none.
At the plate, Emma Vondra led the 11-hit Rambler attack
with two, including a two-run double in the sixth inning.
Paige Hornbeck and Jordan Weiss also added two hits,
while Hannah Hoth doubled and Shumaker, Rainy McCune, Celena Brzezinski and Katelyn Banner all added one
hit.
In the semifinal contest against Elk Rapids, Boyne City
jumped out to an 11-0 cushion by the second inning, the
Ramblers would add a solo run in the fourth and five more
in the fifth. The Elks were able to score three unearned
runs, one in the third and two in the fifth, before BC was
able to put them away in the five inning contest.
Shumaker was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits,
with one walk, and fanning eight.
The 15-hit Boyne City offensive display was led by Hoth
with three hits, including a home run and double. Shumaker helped her own cause with three hits of her own.
Also for the Ramblers, Hornbeck and Banner each doubled and singled, while Emma Vondra tripled, McCune,
Lauren Richards, Brzezinski and Brooke Fouchia all added
one hit apiece.

Charlevoix girls finish fifth, Boyne City eighth at Division III state finals
COMSTOCK PARK The
Charlevoix County area of Northern
Michigan was well represented at the
MHSAA Division III track and field
state finals at Comstock Park High
School on May 31.
Leading the charge for the area
athletes were Charlevoixs Amber
Way and Boyne Citys Kylie Hicks,
both of which captured individual
state titles in their respective events.
Way won the 3200 meter run for the
second consecutive season, besting
her previous meet record time by
more than 13 seconds as she finished
this years race in a 10 minutes, 35.33
seconds.
Amber also finished third in the
1600M run, in a time of 5:07.15 and
ran a leg on Charlevoixs second

Boss, Madeline Boss and Cora Taylor,
in a time of 9:34.57, a new school

record.
Hicks, a senior, running in her
fourth-straight Division III state finals, won the 300 meter hurdles in a
school record time of 44.59 seconds.
Kylie is only the second track girl
in Boyne City history to be a State
Champion, as Katie Martin was State
Champion in the Pole Vault in 2004.
Boyne City coach Andy Place said.
Kylies time was so fast that she
broke her own school record by over
a half second. It was also the fourth
fastest time in the state in all high
school divisions this year.
Hicks also placed second in a close,
five hundredths of a second close, in
the 100M High Hurdles, in a time of
15.13, Frankenmuths Sydney Bronner won the race in 15.08.

nine inches.
Boyne Citys Sidney McLeod
placed 17th in the pole vault at 8-6, a
new personal record.
As she hopped off the mat with a
new personal record and a big smile,
we knew we were going to have a
great day, Rambler coach Place
added.
The Rayder girls finished fifth in
the state with 24 points, while the
Ramblers were eighth .
Boyne Citys Corey Redman was
tied for ninth in high jump, 6-2, a new

Champions of Character awards banquet Monday

by amanda monthei

A local organization aimed at

defeating the win-at-any-cost
model of coaching and sports
participation is again presenting
its Champions of Character
award winners for the 2014 school
year.
Beyond the Scoreboard is a
non-profit organization that has
existed since 2004, which is dedicated to teaching and emphasizing a positive and beneficial
character over winning. The organization is the coordinator of
the Champions Banquet, which
will take place on Monday, June
9.
The purpose of this banquet
is to honor students, coaches, parents, and referees for having the
attributes that the organization
believes in: trustworthiness, leadership, and citizenship, Beyond
the Scoreboard committee member Carolyn Murphy said.
The organization created the

banquet as a means to celebrate

positive character traits and
sportsmanship in both youth and
high school sports programs. Of
the 22 nominated individuals and
groups this year, 10 have been
chosen to receive a Champion of
Character award.
Winners of the awards include
high school athletes Abbie Grace
Welch and Duane Vizina, who are
each multisport athletes exhibiting respect, responsibility, fairness and citizenship, among
other notable character traits.
Welch attended Pellston High
School while Vizina just graduated from Inland Lakes High
School. Youth athlete Allison
Hoffman, of Petoskey St. Xaviers
basketball and volleyball teams,
is also an award winner, while
the Petoskey U15 Lakers Soccer
team took the Team of Character
award for 2014.
Other winners include East
Jordan High School basketball
and tennis coach Bill Chase,

Petoskey Middle School wrestling

coach Paul Vining, official Justin
Matzka, Boyne City teacher and
East Jordan fan Tony Cutler and
youth sports leader Matt Walton,
for his work with the East Jordan
Pop Warner team. Parents Jon
and Merribeth Thompson of
Northern Michigan Christian
Academy will also receive a
Champion of Character award.
Parents are really important
as far as making sure their kids
are good sports, Murphy said.
The parents are really an integral part in sportsmanship just
like parents are an integral part
in making sure their child goes to
school and gets a good education.
You can only do so much as a
teacher or coach, so you have to
have parental support.
Murphy added that youth
sports leaders are included for
nominations and awards because
of the important role they play in
both getting youth interested in
sports and teaching them to

value positive behavior as athletes and people.

A lifetime achievement award
the winner of which hasnt yet
been announced will also be
awarded to an individual who has
pursued positive character in
youth and interscholastic sports
over a lifetime.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of the Beyond the Scoreboard banquet will be this years
keynote speaker, Dave Hannah.
Dave is most distinguished
through his extensive humanitarian work. As the founding member of Athletics in Action, Dave
has spoken to over two million
high school students in assemblies and speeches across the
country. Additionally, he singlehandedly created Lift Up America, an aid organization that
partnered with Tyson Foods to
deliver high-protein foods to over
400,000 families at various events.
Dave Hannah has attributes
that run parallel to what our or-

ganization believes in, Murphy

said. They interviewed several
people to be the guest speaker
and they liked him the best. Im
looking forward to hearing him
speak.
Hannah will not be the only
speaker at the event, however.
Former Olympian Darcie Sharapova who now practices medicine at Little Traverse Primary
Care will also be featured.
She was a 1992 Olympic silver
medalist and the first female athlete to go to the Olympics in two
sports; speed skating and cycling, Murphy said.
The banquet will begin at 6
p.m. on Monday, June 9, and will
take place at the Emmet County
Fairground Community Building. Tickets for the event are $20,
and can be purchased by calling
Murphy at (231) 347-2500.

Kids learn about hatching salmon

Popular 'Salmon in the Classroom' program hooks kids on
making discoveries about the natural world
Every year more than 15,000
Michigan youngsters are involved in hatching Chinook
salmon eggs (supplied by Department of Natural Resources fish
hatcheries) and feeding and caring for the fry until they are old
enough, in the spring, to be released into local rivers hopefully to return in four years to
spawn.
Salmon in the Classroom is the
DNRs most popular education
program.
Our research shows that students engaged in this program
show significant gains in a variety of subjects, said Kevin Frailey, the education services
manager at the DNR.
Rather than someone coming
into the classroom and talking
for an hour, these kids are involved with live creatures from
the fall until the spring, Frailey
said. The kids learn about biology, chemistry, ecology and stewardship. Tests show they know a
lot more about fish and the Great
Lakes after the program than
they did before.
The two biggest motivating
factors are a dedicated teacher
and a committed community,
Frailey continued. The equipment a tank and a chiller -costs about $1,000 to $1,500 and
many of the programs are sponsored by local conservation clubs
or other community groups.
The program, begun by a DNR
fisheries biologist as something
of a lark in the mid-1990s, is now
in some 230 schools, engaging
students from upper elementary
through high school. Some
schools have hundreds of stu-

students from Whitefish township

Community school eagerly help
transplant fish at the mouth of the
tahquamenon river in tahquamenon
Falls state Park, near Paradise. the

dents involved in the program,
others a mere handful.
The students at Whitefish
Township Community School in
Paradise recently released the 88
salmon they raised (from about
200 eggs) this year into the
Tahquamenon River at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in
Chippewa County.
The program teaches the life
cycle of salmon, from the egg to
the smolt, said science teacher
Matt Carter, who had the schools
entire student body (34 students,
K-12) on hand for the release.
One of the goals is to stress conservation, the importance of
keeping our fish population
healthy for the environment and
recreation.
The students worked every
day to take care of the salmon.
They checked the water quality
looked at the amounts of nitrates
and chlorine and ammonia in the
water they checked the pH and
scrubbed the tank to make sure
there wasnt too much algae. As
long as this program is available,
well continue to do this.
The salmon release, from the
bus ride to the park to letting the
smolts go, took only a couple of
hours, but it turned into a daylong field trip when park interpreter Theresa Neal gave the
youngsters an extra job helping
stock trout in the Tahquamenon
River below the upper falls.
The river is accessible by a 116step staircase from the walking
path to the water. And theres
only one way to get the 4,000
brown trout from the fish truck
to the river by buckets. So the

youngsters formed a bucket

brigade, passing the trout 10 to
20 at a time, in 5-gallon buckets
down the steps to the river.
The DNR has stocked trout in
the river here since the 1950s,
said Cory Kovacs, the DNR fisheries biologist at Newberry.
It offers fly fishermen something unique in the Upper Peninsula, Kovacs said. Its remote
theres not a lot of access and
its pretty comparable to the fishing out West in terms of the aesthetics.
The fishery is becoming increasingly popular with kayakers and canoeists, Kovacs said,
and a postcard survey of anglers
showed a high rate of satisfaction with the angling experience.
We dont get a lot of reports,
but the reports we get are positive, he said.
The idea of enlisting the
youngsters help came to Neal in
a flash when she saw how difficult it was for the DNR crew including Fisheries Division
personnel and park staffers to
get the job done.
Were always trying to do new
things with the school and we
thought this would be a good excuse for a field trip, said Neal,
who started the student bucket
brigade in 2008. They learn a little bit about the DNR, our hatcheries and the fish.
Its a good community event,
too, she continued. We always
like to get the community involved whenever we can. It has
been a big hit; we get a dozen or
so people from the community
who dont necessarily have kids

in school. A lot of retired folks

come to Paradise to live, so its a
good way to introduce them to
the park and what we do.
Leo Culbert, a retiree form
Hillsdale County, said he heard
about the fish planting at the senior center, came to see it, and
wound up in the bucket brigade.
I think its neat, he said. Ill
fish for them. I think its real
nice for the school to come out
and help.
Between the salmon release
and the bucket brigade, John
Prescott, the principal/superintendent of Whitefish Township
Community School, grilled hot
dogs and brats for the students
and staff.
This is a fun, highly educational experience, he said.
They get to see the ecosystem.
But its a riot to get them out
here to release the trout and
then, later on, one of them might
catch one.
Zachary Ferguson, a ninthgrader who took on a leadership
role in the bucket brigade, said
he thoroughly enjoys the experience.
I like it, he said. I know a lot
of people catch brown trout out
of this river. Im planning on
coming back and fishing for
them this summer.

2015 F-150 most patented

truck in Ford history
new innovations bolster next-generation light-duty pickup
From its tailgate step to the
LED spotlights found on the side
mirrors, the next-generation 2015
Ford F-150s new features and
technologies make it the most
patented truck in company history.
The all-new F-150 is loaded
with innovation, said Alana
Strager, Ford program analyst
charged with tracking new innovations for the 2015 truck. Ford
engineers filed more than 100
new patents for technologies on
this truck as they have worked to
redefine the light-duty pickup for
the next generation.
Patents and patent applications abound for state-of-the-art
technologies covering new features and breakthroughs that
will benefit customers of the allnew 2015 F-150. The scope of
these innovations includes every
part of the truck body, exterior,
interior, chassis, design, electrical and engine as well as its
manufacturing processes.
Examples of Fords state-ofthe-art technologies on the new
2015 F-150 include segment-exclusive LED spotlights found on the
side mirrors, innovative remote
tailgate release and smart trailer
tow features that make towing
easier.

- Innovative LED side-mirror

spotlights allow customers to illuminate the side of the vehicle
for tasks from setting up a campsite to changing a tire
- Remote tailgate release automatically lowers the tailgate
with the push of a button on the
key fob a first for a pickup
truck
- Fords pioneering tailgate
step has been completely reengineered so it fully integrates into
the tailgate, making it virtually
invisible when not in use. The
tailgate drops down into position
in one easy motion. The grab
handle is now housed inside the
tailgate, which keeps the inner
surface of the tailgate uniformly
flat
- BoxLink cargo management system includes lockable,
die-cast aluminum tie-down
cleats, and provides a unique interface to the box for improved
flexibility and organization, as
well as additional locations for
tie-downs. Available segmentfirst cargo ramps can be stowed
on the sides of the pickup box via
the BoxLink system and
mounted quickly on the tailgate
to enable easy loading of ATVs,
motorcycles or mowers
Other smart features never of-

fered before on a Ford pickup include 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps stowed in
the pickup bed, 400-watt power
outlets inside the cab and LED
headlights.
Mounted on an exceptionally
strong and well-proven highstrength steel frame, the all-new
Ford F-150 incorporates the latest
high-strength, military-grade,
aluminum alloys to form the
body and cargo box. The aluminum is heat-treated using a
proprietary method developed by
Ford engineers that nearly doubles the strength of the metal.
Ford is first in the auto industry
to use this methodology.
Additionally, Ford engineers
have filed patent applications for
spot welding methods, adhesives
and hydroforming this first-ofits-kind truck.
Ford is teaching the world
how to build a next-generation
truck, and the more than 100
patents filed by the F-150 team for
technologies on the 2015 truck
further proves these Ford engineers and designers lead the automotive industry in
innovation, said Strager.

Question & Answers About Selling Real Estate

What Homeowners Insurance

Discounts Are You Missing?
Part 1 of 2
Compliments of mike stark,
Coldwell banker schmidt realtors
east Jordan. (231) 536-7700

Homeowners insurance isnt a

topic that most people like to think
about except as the funny/scary
Mayhem ads for Allstate. For firsttime homebuyers the prospect of
adding home insurance to the other
long list of costs can seem daunting.
Yet homeowners insurance isnt just
required for your mortgage, its an
important part of a plan to keep you
and your home safe.
Generally homeowners insurance
covers damage from fire, most
storms (some insurance does not include flood damage), theft, and more.
It can also protect you in case someone is injured in your home. It is a

wise investment in your financial

safety.
Luckily there are some ways you
can improve your home that not only
may boost resale value, but can also
knock a little off your homeowners
insurance rates. Trusted Choice conducted a national survey in 2011 and
found that over 34% of respondents
did not know about all the homeowners insurance discounts available to
them. Below are a few key areas to
focus on.

1) Home Security
Those who live in a gated community may be entitled to a discount.
Gated communities tend to have
lower rates of theft, vandalism, and

Featured Property

other crimes. Having a security system in place can pare as much as 15

percent off your policy depending on
the provider. Dead-bolt locks can also
be a discount for some providers.
2) Fire SafetyThe installation of
smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors isnt just necessary protection for your family, its also
something insurance underwriters
smile upon. Also for fire protection, a
sprinkler system, heat detectors, fire
escapes and plenty of fire extinguishers are also important. And
keep those flammable substances
outside the home at a cool temperature to avoid overheating and fire
risk.
