1. BACKGROUND
I n spri ng 2013, the Chemi cal Heri tage Foundati on, l ocated i n Phi l adel phi a,
Pennsyl vani a, began i ts i nvol vement i n Wi ki pedi a and Wi ki medi a Commons by
hi ri ng i ts fi rst Wi ki pedi an i n Resi dence. The purpose of thi s i ni ti ati ve was to make
accessi bl e i ts col l ecti ons and subj ect matter exper ti se rel ated to chemi str ys rol e
i n hi stor y. CHFs col l ecti ons i ncl ude the fol l owi ng:

Thi s case study exami nes the tacti cal approach CHF took i n contri buti ng i mages
to Wi ki medi a Commons, edi ti ng and cl ari fyi ng rel ated subj ect matter pages, and
extendi ng the edi t-a-thon concept i nto a broader outreach mechani sm that has
i nspi red si mi l ar programs by a number of other cul tural i nsti tuti ons.
The program i s ongoi ng and thi s repor t captures i ts outputs and outcomes as of the
programs fi rst year.
2. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
2. 1 Medi a Contri buti ons to Wi ki Medi a Commons
A maj or obj ecti ve of thi s proj ect i s to donate content to Wi ki medi a Commons,
par ti cul arl y i mages from the CHF l i brar y, archi ves, and col l ecti ons on topi cs such
as al chemy, the hi stor y of chemi str y, and women i n sci ence. I mages from events at
CHF are al so useful resources, par ti cul arl y those featuri ng current thought l eaders
i n sci ence. Once on Wi ki medi a Commons, these i mages may be uti l i zed by educators
and researchers worl dwi de wi thout restri cti ons.
Tasks i ncl ude consul ti ng wi th staff from al l depar tments, i denti fyi ng possi bl e
i mages for contri buti on, revi ewi ng copyri ght status for al l i mages, and rel easi ng
i mages on Commons wi th appropri ate metadata and i nsti tuti onal and l i censi ng
templ ates so that they can be used on Wi ki pedi a pages.
I deal l y i mages shoul d be of good qual i ty: vi sual l y effecti ve, representati ve of
thei r subj ects, and whenever possi bl e of hi gh resol uti on. They shoul d be pl aced on
rel evant pages where they wi l l enhance understandi ng of and i nterest i n the text.
I mages rel eased shoul d be i l l ustrati ve of a range of CHF resources.
2. 2 Expansi on of Content and Authori tati ve Sources
The programs second obj ecti ve i s to i mprove Wi ki pedi as coverage of peopl e and
topi cs rel ati ng to the hi stor y of sci ence, par ti cul arl y chemi str y. CHF provi des a
wi de range of val uabl e i nformati on sources, i ncl udi ng oral hi stori es, magazi ne
ar ti cl es, books, vi deos, and other resources from the CHF websi te.
Tasks i ncl ude wri ti ng text on exi sti ng pages, provi di ng source ci tati ons for exi sti ng
pages, and creati ng new pages about notabl e peopl e and topi cs. Ar ti cl es that are
created or si gni fi cantl y expanded can be nomi nated to appear on Wi ki pedi as mai n
page for a day as par t of thei r Di d You Know? feature.
Expansi on of content shoul d be done wi th i ntegri ty, fol l owi ng Wi ki pedi a best
practi ces such as accuracy, veri fi abi l i ty, neutral i ty, no confl i ct of i nterest, and
no pl agi ari sm. Expansi on of content has al so been performed wi th the i ntent to
enhance accessi bi l i ty to resources at CHF.

The program has been extraordi nari l y successful i n i ts obj ecti ve to promote
oppor tuni ti es for new rel ati onshi ps and connecti ons wi th others i n the gal l eri es,
l i brari es, archi ves and museums communi ti es. Thi s i ncl udes engagi ng wi th others
i n the GLAM Wi ki communi ty by l eadi ng and par ti ci pati ng i n events hel d at the
Chemi cal Heri tage Foundati on, at other si tes i n the Phi l adel phi a area, and remotel y
through onl i ne acti vi ti es and events. CHF i s ser vi ng as a thought l eader, and
promoti ng the devel opment of a strong communi ty.

CONTRIBUTION OF MEDIA
Over the past year, 329 i mages from CHF have been rel eased on Wi ki medi a
Commons. Areas of focus i ncl uded rare al chemi cal books (55), al chemi cal pai nti ngs
from the fi ne ar t col l ecti on (12), ar ti sts from the Sensi ng Change and El emental
Matters exhi bi ts (24), and sci enti sts (130). I mages of sel ected sci enti fi c ar ti facts
and i nstruments were al so rel eased. Por trai ts of peopl e are hi ghl y val ued for thei r
use on bi ographi cal ar ti cl es. Most fi ne ar t and Al chemi cal Quest i mages were hi gh
resol uti on, whi ch i s al so val ued.
Women sci enti sts were strongl y represented usi ng resources from events, oral
hi stori es, rare books, photographs and documents from hi stori cal archi ves (70).
CHF has now contri buted 1/3 of the i mages i n the categor y Femal e sci enti sts,
whi ch has grown duri ng the past year from 40 i mages to over 200.
CHF i mages are i ncreasi ngl y appeari ng on ar ti cl es i n forei gn-l anguage Wi ki pedi as.
I mages from CHF currentl y appear on 35 di fferent Wi ki pedi as.
Due to a recent i ni ti ati ve at Wi ki pedi a for l i nki ng to external vi deo, there was
strong i nterest i n CHF vi deos from the Catal yst Women i n Chemi str y seri es.
These are not rel eased on Wi ki medi a Commons, but al l of them have been l i nked to
from Wi ki pedi a pages.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Earl y staff devel opment work focused on provi di ng basi c i nformati on about
Wi ki pedi a and Wi ki medi a Commons through tal ks and workshops. Events
speci fi cal l y for CHF staff i ncl uded a What i s Wi ki pedi a? brown bag l unch
l ecture (17 par ti ci pants), a Wi ki pedi a 101 workshop on basi c edi ti ng
(12 par ti ci pants), and a Wi ki pedi a edi t-a-thon where peopl e coul d tr y out
new ski l l s wi th coachi ng from Wi ki pedi ans (17 par ti ci pants). Most of the
attendees created accounts and many tri ed edi ti ng. The edi t-a-thon was ver y
producti ve: 5 new ar ti cl es were created, at l east 17 were edi ted, and two new
ar ti cl es were nomi nated for Di d You Know entri es (DYKs).
The basi c trai ni ng events contri buted to a posi ti ve reacti on from CHF staff
members for the GLAM-Wi ki I ni ti ati ve and the Wi ki pedi an i n Resi dence. On
an ongoi ng basi s, the Wi ki pedi an i n Resi dence has worked wi th staff i n al l
depar tments to i denti fy resources that can be used to enhance mi ssi on-rel ated
content on Wi ki pedi a. Through ongoi ng di scussi ons, staff have i denti fi ed
possi bl e i mages for Wi ki pedi a and di scussed i ssues of copyri ght and l i censi ng
rel ated to thei r use. As staff become more fami l i ar wi th Wi ki pedi a, they have
suggested a wi de range of mi ssi on-rel evant topi cs and resources for edi ti ng of
Wi ki pedi a pages, maki ng CHFs content and resources i ncreasi ngl y accessi bl e.
As staff devel op a sense of fami l i ari ty and competence i n deal i ng wi th
Wi ki pedi a, they begi n to see themsel ves as capabl e of havi ng an i mpact onl i ne.
Another ski l l devel opment strategy i s an hour-l ong di gi tal trai ni ng/coachi ng
sessi on hel d at 4 p. m. the second Tuesday of each month i n the CHF conference
center. The event then transi ti ons i nto a 3-hour cybercafe overl ooki ng CHFs
museum duri ng whi ch par ti ci pants share thei r experi ences, research, and
col l aborate on di gi tal proj ects. Wi ki pedi ans and di gi tal humani ti es enthusi asts
i n the Phi l adel phi a area are al so i nvi ted to these meeti ngs.

In addition to its staf members, CHFs frst Wikipedia Edit-a-thon included participants
from Wikipedia and from the local GLAM community. One attendee drove in from Wash-
ington, D.C. At least fve more people were involved remotely, editing online. All of the
Catalyst Series Women in Chemistry videos were linked to Wikipedia pages

There has been substanti al i nterest from the l ocal GLAM Wi ki communi ty due to
outreach through CHFs Wi ki pedi an i n Resi dence. Begi nni ng i n November 2013,
CHF has hosted an open meeti ng at the Chemi cal Heri tage Foundati on on the
second Tuesday of each month. The GLAM Caf i s open to al l those i n the GLAM and
Wi ki pedi a communi ti es. There have been approxi matel y 150 GLAM Caf attendees
from l ocal uni versi ti es, l i brari es, museums, and Wi ki pedi a. Organi zati ons
represented i ncl ude Phi l l y DH (di gi tal humani ti es), the Uni versi ty of Pennsyl vani a,
the Uni versi ty of Del aware, Drexel Uni versi ty, and Br yn Mawr Col l ege, among
others.

The Wi ki pedi an i n Resi dence has reached 145 attendees through ten events,
i ncl udi ng the Phi l l y DH Unconference, ThatCamp Phi l l y, the Smal l Museums
Associ ati on conference, an Ar t and Femi ni sm edi t-a-thon at the Uni versi ty of the
Ar ts, and a Seven Si sters edi t-a-thon at Br yn Mawr Col l ege.
Outreach to groups at other i nsti tuti ons to devel op ski l l s for contri buti ng to
Wi ki pedi a.
As a resul t of CHFs GLAM-Wi ki outreach, the Uni versi ty of the Ar ts, Br yn Mawr
Col l ege and the Uni versi ty of Del aware have organi zed edi t-a-thons, and Br yn
Mawr has begun to contri bute i mage resources to Wi ki pedi a Commons. The
Wi ki pedi an i n Resi dence al so contri buted remotel y to edi t-a-thons for Ada
Lovel ace Day and for Women i n Sci ence at the Smi thsoni an and the Uni versi ty of
Okl ahoma.
With the GLAM-Wiki
initiative, the Chemical
Heritage Foundation
is serving as a thought
leader, and promoting the
development of a strong
GLAM Wiki community.
CHF is also providing
access to its resources in a
new way, and increasing its
accessibility world-wide.
Above: The GLAM Cafe is a cyber cofee house held monthly at CHFs Overlook lounge. The
event draws together digital humanities enthusiasts throughout the greater Philadelphia
area. Participants hold monthly Wikipedia edit-a-thons, share presentations on projects, and
collaborate on building interactive experiences.
