Above: Halls Ball Event coming up.

Below: Recent International Trip to
Wellington
Level 2, The Student Centre
MASSEY MANAWATU
A big welcome to all our new residents who have joined the
community in Semester Two. We hope you enjoy your stay here in the
Halls of Residence.
For those of you returning to the halls, we hope that you all had a
wonderful break. You should be feeling refreshed and ready to get back
into your studies. This semester will go really fast, so be sure to make
time for balance by getting involved with community events.

There are plenty of things to look forward to this Semester.
We have a number of events coming up. These include a
worthwhile community initiative which is the Tree Planting at Pitt Park.
We also have the upcoming Halls Ball which is always a sell out, so get
your tickets quick. Early bird buyers will be eligible for one of three prizes.

A new event this semester is the Run, Ride, Row Challenge which is
being hosted by the Rec Centre which the RAs should shed more light on
for you.

There is an upcoming Flatting Expo that will provide very useful
information about going flatting in town. This is highly
recommended. There will be numerous displays with important services
from the university and community to help inform you on what you need
to know and prepare for when flatting. We will also have some exciting
options if you are considering coming to live back on campus as a
returner for 2015.

There are still lots of Gumboot points up for grabs. Check inside the
newsletter for more detailed info on events and find out which hall is in
the lead. Dont forget that we incorporate behaviour as part of this.

It is that time of year too with colds and flu. Be sure to make sure that you
wash your hands and cover your sneezes. If you feel sick, get plenty of
rest and isolate yourself from other people to prevent spreading germs. If
you have any concerns please see your RA and get checked out at the
Medical Centre.

CENTRE FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
CHAPLAINCY
Welcome back to Semester 2 at Massey. Presumably, the fact that
you are still here means several things:
You have discovered exams can be survived.
You have decided likewise with regard to Palmerston North.
You may even be enjoying your course
You are about to enjoy a wonderful Palmy winter!

We hope your exams went well and you have a really good Semester
Two. Life at uni should be fun and can go fast. It is also a time
where, consciously or subconsciously, your values get shaped, tested
and refined. You work out the sort of person you want to be and what
influences are going to shape your life for better or worse. As
chaplains we are here to help as sounding boards or resources in this
important process. We are also more than happy to act as informal
mentors for you if that would be helpful. We can be available as an
easily accessible first port of call if you have issues that you would
value discussing. So feel free to drop by the Centre any time.
So, whats happening at the Centre this term?

As always, we will be open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. More
specifically
Wednesday 12 noon
Catholic Mass (followed by lunch)

Wednesday evening 7pm

STUDENT COUNSELLING
A new semester!

A new semester and new challenges! How does it feel to be
back at uni and back in the Halls after being away for a while?
Exciting or a bit of a let down, or both? While the new semester
can be exciting re-connecting with friends in the Halls and
starting new papers - it can be a difficult time for many students
after having re-experienced the warmth, home cooking and time
with close family and old friends. Or maybe you have
travelled quite a bit enjoying the sites without having to think too
hard about studying. The wrench of returning for another long
semester can be hard, especially if you miss home, did not do
especially well in exams, or are not entirely sure that this is the
degree you really want to be doing.

There are a few things you can do to make it easier.

The first is to ensure that all the practical things are taken
care of:
Are you happy with your current papers?
If not go and talk to the team in the Careers & Employment
Service on Level 2 of Registry and / or Academic Advisers .

How were your exam results? Did you achieve as you had
hoped? If not do you know why? What went wrong? Was it that
you just did not do enough work? Was it you did not understand
the work? Was it exam nerves? Poor preparation? Low internal
marks? Emotional/relationship difficulties?
Go and discuss it with the relevant people, and if you dont know
what the cause was, start with that and talk to someone to work
out what went wrong. Make time to see a learning consultant in
the Centre for Teaching and Learning (upstairs in the Student
Centre), or a counsellor at Student Counselling or even your
paper co-ordinator.
It is really important to know why you did not achieve the results
you had wished for.

Have you sorted your finances and fees?
Make time to go to the Financial Advisers on Level 2 of Registry to
explore financial awards and scholarships, your StudyLink
allowances and budgeting issues.

Emotions all over the place? Missing home? Not sure if you should
be here?
Try Student Counselling Service. There is a useful
brochure on our website (http://crow.massey.ac.nz) and available
on the stands in SSLB, the Rec Centre and BSC buildings about
Leaving Home which give a range of really helpful tips.

Did not get into Vet and not sure what to do now?
Try Careers & Employment Service.

If you are unsure where to go or if its just that things are not as
good as you had hoped talk to an RA or one of the Halls staff who
will be able to point you in the best direction if they cannot help you
themselves!

But all is not negative make the most of the rest of the year.
Become involved in all that is happening on campus, engage with
your academic programme and embrace the opportunities.

Keep an eye out for the Are YOU employable? campaign about to
be launched this semester and join in to see how you can translate
your time at uni into a great work life at the end of it allbecause
that is why you are here! Right?

With all good wishes.

There is currently a Measles outbreak in New Zealand that is
affecting both adults and children.

Measles is highly contagious and is easily preventable. The virus
spreads easily from person to person through the air, via breathing,
coughing and sneezing.

The MMR (Measles Mumps and Rubella ) vaccine is available, free,
to anyone who needs it. Talk to your GP or Practice Nurse to find
out whether you have been fully immunised against Measles,
especially if you are travelling overseas.
If you or someone you know have symptoms of Measles, then
please contact your General Practitioner.

Measles Symptoms:
The illness usually starts 10-12 days after a person has been
exposed. If you have measles, you may have:
Fever
Runny nose
Sore and watery pink eyes
Sometimes small, white spots on the back inner cheek of
your mouth.

A rash usually starts on the 3
rd
7
th
day of the illness. This tends to
start on the face, behind the ears, before moving over the head and
down the body. The rash lasts for up to a week.
Measles can be life threatening and may cause permanent damage,
including hearing loss, brain damage or death.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICE
Two buses departed nice and early for the second
International Off Campus Trip during the recent
Semester Break.

One bus headed to Te Papa Museum of New Zealand,
where students explored the city or spent the day looking
at the exhibits and exploring the harbour area around Te
Papa.

The other bus went to the Wellington Zoo. After a few
hours of experiencing the exotic animal and bird life, the
students and families were taken to the cable car in the
city centre. Riding to the top of the cable car track, they
had a great view across the city. The bus was waiting at
the top of the cable car, and on the way out of the city,
made a short stop at the Beehive and Parliament buildings
for a photo opportunity.
We were very lucky with the weather because,
although it was cold, it was not wet or windy as it had
been for most of the week.
Congratulations to the following residents who have been
selected as residents of the month for May 2014 for their
respective halls.

Ian is one of our friendly imports from across the ditch,
calling Melbourne home. He came to Palmy to pursue
his dream of studying Veterinary Science. If he's not
studying you can find him on his rollers blades
practicing tricks and turns on the narrow yet smooth
concrete outside Kiwitea.

He is a fantastic role model as not only does he study
exceptionally hard, but he also likes to socialise and
participates in activities when he can. He is always
helpful and willing to participate in all hall events, only
ever showing positivity and enthusiasm. Ian has shown
commitment and a great attitude by dressing up as a
Kermit and nerd at Crazy Sports and Dodgeball.

He is very respectful of others and their feelings and
constantly comes up with new ideas or activities for hall
events. His motivation and friendly disposition has
united the bond within our Kiwitea family.

It's great to have you on board our Kermit team Ian!
Keep up the good work!
