Macro / Meso-economic analysis

Research Question

How can Dutch companies improve

their use of IT as enabler of
innovation?
Background information
• Lectures
• Video of Finland and innovation
• Reading of the book:
– Strategic Management of Technological Innovation,
Melissa A. Schilling
Our approach
• What is important for our research?
– Study trip
• Which company to visit
– Reach
– Vodafone
• What part of the university to visit
– NovaUCD
– The part where IT or some form of ICT is used. Like a
knowledge system, intranet, hotspots
• What part of the government to visit
– The government in total.
Where does IT take its place in this area?
Our approach ext 1.
– Internet
– Book: Strategic Management of
Technological Innovation
The sub-questions
1. Are universities driven by innovation and what is
the function of IT in this?
2. Do country education systems have different
cultures and what is the influence of that?
3. Where do we see effective innovation? And why
is it working well there?
4. What’s the role of IT in companies? Is it even
connected to innovation?
Results
• NovaUCD is stimulating innovative thinking. Close
relationship with UCD.

• IT gives student the opportunity to get information

quickly by internet or intranet.
Wi-fi and knowledge system helps with this.

• In Ireland innovation is one of the top priorities in the

educational system. In The Netherlands we want it to be,
but it is not.
Results ext 1.
• Especially NovaUCD is one of the great examples of
effective innovation. This is because of the tight
relationship between university (the knowledge) and the
company. Also Reach is a good example of IT as
enabler of innovation.

• IT is making his way in companies very quickly. Still

there is a lot of work to be done. IT is evolving and so
companies must be ready to take further steps.
Conclusions
• IT is an enabler of innovation
• Dutch companies versus Irish companies, the Irish are in
the lead with being innovative.
• How Dutch companies can use IT:
– Improve their knowledge system
• Better databases, more user friendly, wikipedia
– Improve communication internal and external
• Wi-fi connection, wikipedia, intranet
