Jib Sheet

From the Commodore

The Flag Officers just
attended the awards ceremony for Junior Bay
Week at PIB. Congratulations to the PCYC Junior
Race Team for winning
the Shipshape Award.
The team had a great experience at the regatta
concluding a good year of
racing and an excellent
Learn to Sail Program.
July disappeared partly
because I went on a road
trip with my daughter
Nicole to California for
ten days. After getting
advice from our local
mountain climbing expert, Matt Wenzinger, I
proceeded to follow none
of it. Despite improper
gear, no conditioning,
inadequate water supply
and none of most everything else he suggested
Nicole and I successfully
scaled the cables on Half
Dome at Yosemite National Park. I figured I
handled the cables on the
east pier of the Portage

River entrance we could

do the Half Dome cables.
The problem is the altitude, the incline, and the
eight mile up hill hike to
the cables made the experience the most physically challenging and
scariest task I have attempted recently. For
some reason it was harder
than when my wife and I
climbed the Dome
thirty years ago. I texted
my wife, if I make it off
the mountain, I will never
do this again. She reminded me I said the
same thirty years ago.
I made it back in time to
participate in the M1 Garand Match at Camp
Perry. My fellow competitor, John Folger,
showed me no mercy as
he expertly fired the
match in a constant
downpour. Then it was
back to PCYC to dry out
and enjoy Geogh and
Nancy Baileys Tuscany
Spaghetti Dinner. It was

outstanding and we all

should encourage Geoff
to continue the event next
year. The Russians came
and left after a very entertaining performance.
Thank you to our members who helped host the
musicians and dancers
especially PCYC member
and Rotary President
John Madison. Come out
Wednesday, July 30 to
welcome the Corsair National Racers to the club
for their first ever National event on Lake Erie.
PC Doug Young has won
the competition in prior
years. Thank you PCYC
member Gloria Denos
for mowing and trimming
the grounds.
August is packed with
activity so please check
the PCYC Social Calendar.
The best is yet to come.
Enjoy summer at PCYC!!

The Rear Perspective

Our summer at the club
has been very busy this
year. I hope everyone has
had a chance to use our
facilities. The month of
August is full of events
ending the month with
the Green Island Race.
The PCYC is definitely
the place to be.

This is your
Club, Use it and
have Fun.

We continue to accomplish meaningful projects

for our members. The
last of the new marina
pedestals are installed,
only the water lines need
to be connected to complete. Rusty Jack and
Mike Crone used their
expertise to complete the
installation along with the
help of Eric. We just
completed our pool
kitchen renovation and
are now ready to properly
service the bar and food
needs for our pool patrons. This was completed with member participation. John Folger,
Chuck Reichman, Cliff
Howell, Adrian Cantu
and Eric helped perform
the new counter and sink
renovations.

Our portable pump-out

has been inspected and
was tested last weekend.
Please be patient as we
are still working on establishing the routine that
was passed by the board.
Our intent is to make it
available on Thursday,
Friday and Sunday every
week from 1 pm to 6 pm
and to store it in the
fenced storage area when
not in use. We welcome
your comments, as we
always are looking at improving on our members
needs.
One item of housekeeping needs to be brought
to your attention. Your
help is needed. We have
had problems with messy
restrooms in our main
clubhouse. On weekends, during heavy use,
we are getting complaints
of paper on the floor and
general untidiness. We
are changing the type of
paper towels in the restrooms to eliminate the
small paper debris on the
floor. Also we will review
the need for another high

efficiency hand dryer for

the womens restroom.
Along with this we need
your help with keeping
the restrooms clean.
Please keep in mind that
this a working club and
we dont have a full staff
of cleaning personnel on
the grounds for every
event. It is your responsibility to help keep things
tidy anywhere on the
grounds and to notify
Chuck, Eric, the bartenders, or any flag or board
member if there are items
that need immediate attention such as a spill,
lack of toilet paper, etc.
Please remember that
your opinions do count.
Come down and enjoy
our beautiful facilities and
as I say every month
This is your Club, Use
it and have Fun.

Fleet Captain of Power, RJ Basil

Summer is in full swing and
so is the Power fleet. June
and July were very successful with a cruise to
Sandusky Yacht Club followed up by the annual
"Dingy Poker Run".
We had eighteen boats
and forty people make the

trip to Sandusky Yacht

Club. We had a very good
time Friday night with a
dinner in the pavilion and
the Saturday "Bloody Mary
Party" provided a good
start to the day. Every
year Sandusky is surprised
at all the excitement PCYC
brings for the weekend.

cards for the day.
The "Dingy Poker Run"
had nineteen boats and
over a hundred people. The weather was terrific and so was the hospitality provided by Dave and
Cindy Bringman. The
Poker Run came down to
one final draw, won by Don
Finnigan. Thanks to the

We will be traveling to Kelly's

Island the weekend
of August 23rd. It looks like
there are a good number of
people signed up. An email
will be sent out soon with
weekend details. I can taste
the strawberries already.
Happy boating,

Fleet Capn oSail, Ramon Eichert

Racing News
Jr. Race Team
Junior Racing is winding down. As I write this the Race team is finishing up at Jr. Fall Bay. Our race team grew this year.
We had 2 - Lasers, 4 420s and 3- Optis actively racing and practicing this year. A recap and results to follow in the
next jib sheet. Enjoy some Race team pictures. Race Team Chair: Dr.Suzi Leone e-mail: sleone@wls4kids.org, Cell

Learn to sail
Matt Wenzinger is in charge of our Learn to Sail program. This was a challenging year for the 1st time LTS Chairmen.
He had record kids and record outboard repairs. Thanks again to Matt, Jim Miller, Vince Leon, Kevin Kyle, Bill Taylor.
Pat Reineck and those that helped that I did not see or mention. The program ran smoothly and safely. Matt Wenzinger

VBC/PCYC North Coast Jr. Regatta (July 18th)
This was the 2nd year that PCYC and VBC have held a regatta together. This year it was hosted at Vermillion. Next year
it comes back to PCYC. The following members were working on the following courses. Jim Miller Lasers, Bill Taylor
420s, Mark and Linda Sprenger, Sara Hanselman, Ramon Eickert and Tony the Brit Opti Gold. Special thanks to Dr.
Jen Casey Head Scorer and Chris Mallet for putting on a great regatta. Matt Wenzinger took 7 of our afternoon LTS sailors to the Vermillion regatta and had them experience the excitement of race day both on shore and on the water.
Auxiliary racing
PCYC member John Earhart finishes the Double handed 2014 Mac Race.
John Earhart, who usually crews for Cliff Ruckstuhl, did the Port Huron to Mackinac Island race in July. John sailed on
Serenity, a Tartan 30C, owned by Carl Sommers. John and Carl did the race in the Doublehanded class, and registered
as representing the PCYC. This year the 203 nm race turned out to be quite arduous, with nighttime thunderstorms, 2
cold fronts, beating to windward in 30 knot winds and 8' waves, and heavy fog. John found the spinnaker run at 2 am in
22 knots of wind, rain, and fog while on watch alone to be the most exciting part of the race (especially the subsequent
broach). John and Carl finished 8 out of 9 in their class, finishing in under 51 hours.
